he FIFA World Cup known as the greatest show on earth, which is held every four years started way back in 1930 with aboul 8 teams, Uruguay being the first winner. This they achieved again in 1950, with Italy winning in 1934 and 1938. It was postponed in the 1940s due to World War I and Tl A total of eight nations have lifted Lhe cup, with Brazil leading with five wins, 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002. Germany is second with four wins, 1954, 1974, 1990 and 2014, however Lhey have gotten to eighL finals, the most by any country. So while they may be seen as the power house in Europe, Brazil is the power house in South America. No Learn outside of Europe or South America has ever been lucky enough lo lift the Cup. Hopefully one day Jamaica can (smile).

he 2018 Final held in Russia which started on June 14U1, reached ils climax on July 17th after over one month of grueling and exciting spills, thrills and surprises. We saw five goals in the opening match and six goals in U1e final, 27 penalties were given of which 17 were scored. There was a new system introducedcalled "Video Assistant Referee" (VAR) which got a 90% approval rating and was welcomed and appreciated by all. A Lola! of 169 goals were scored with no game ending with a goalless score line. lt has earned the title or dubbed, the best World Cup ever. What we have experienced over the past month was a neutral's delighL and a supporter's nightmare, It was one of those World Cups where it seemed like everyone was involved, supporting a team or jeering someone when their team got knocked out. One by one we saw the power houses in football dropping oul and leaving the tournament earlier than expected. The first casualty was Germany, who was defeated by Mexico and then by Japan and oh the Brazilian fans were ecstatic because they remembered Lheir 7-1 thrashing four years ago. By the time we got over the shock of Germany leaving, then came Argentina tumbling down. Whal made il so heart wrenching for Lhe Argentinian fans was Lhe fad lhal Lhey were almost sure that it would be the year for arguably the greatesl player ever to lift the World Cup Trophy. However, once again Lionel Messi was Lionel Missing,

he domino effect continued wilh Portugal, Spain, Uruguay and then the mighty Brazil. By the time the semifinalscame around only Belgium, Croatia, England and France were left. Two of the four had won il only once while the other Lwo had never before gotten to a final. So it was a glorious opportunity for a team to win it for the first time or for a team Lo double. Tn Lhe end, il was a Croatia vs France final. These two countries had met before in 1998 in the semifinals, incidentally France was the host of that tournament. France defeated Croatia 2-1 and went on to defeat Brazil 3-0 in the final to lift their first trophy. Croatia, the country formally known as Yugoslavia, was dearly the underdog coming into this match up. They got support from supporters of other teams that got knocked out early, such as , Brazil, Argentina, Spain just to name a few who did not want France to win.

The game ended with a 4-2 score line in fa vow¡ of France. Then Lhe heavens opened up immediately after pouring down whal would have lasted like sweet wine to Francebut acid to Croatia.
