popular address for the “contemporary” real estate client: the ok properties offices at the ring road in Ban Por OK Properties CEO Norbert Verweyen is just one big bundle of business optimism. The German national (who says he also has Dutch and French blood). Exudes so much passion and unwavering confidence to the potential and prospects of doing business in Koh Samui. This, despite the present realities that the property market is currently in a slump and most of the business competition is now experiencing less and less occupancies and problems with their bank loans. According to the 58-year-old former optometrist and optician turned property business executive. OK Properties has been in the real estate property business on the island for the last 18 years and has remained a stable. Solid and financially sound company despite the global economic recession.
“Real Estate was never a better option
than now”
Norbert Verweyen - OK Properties
Therefore, OK Properties has introduced a rather simple but attractive alternative to the Samui property market. “We have a smaller cake nowadays and business is not like before but our company offsets this predicament by striving to be good and better than others. While some are still in shock with the market situation. Ok Properties go a step further by introducing their answer to the situation in the business. “Verweyen says. “During difficult times you have to prove you’re a good company by adapting to the situation & knowing what the market needs. He adds: “Finance your house with zero interest, downpayment 40%, rest over 3 years, just like buying a car. The best part of it is the fact that the buyer gets two incomes from the investment: from the rental and from the increased value of the property. Thais also buy from us, “Verweyen boasts happily, adding “They cannot buy cheaper property than from us and their response to our promotion has been very good because they can compare easily. So no wonder Europeans and Asians follow suit.

poolRX...it really works

The Prescription for Every Pool • The Patented PoolRx is Nature’s own water purifying process. • The most inexpensive and simplest way to create a low chlorine environment. • Eliminates all algae, bacteria and viruses. • These minerals are not dissipated by sunlight or heat. • Reduce Chemicals by up to 70% - saving money and Eco-Friendly. • Create a better swimming environment. • Reduce the irritations associated with chlorine: red stinging eyes, dry itchy skin and faded swimsuits while enjoying crystal clear, soft water. “I rent my villa quite frequently, and renters seem to live in my pool. I used to hear from renters when the pool wasn’t as clean and clear as they would like, but I don’t get those calls anymore. I don’t know what you’re magic formula is, but whatever it is, it works!” Rob Newman, Owner of Villa Samprasada, Bophut, Koh Samui. “Our pool is the jewel of our property, and using PoolRx not only keeps the water clear and sparkling, but we’re saving a lot of money on pool maintenance by having to use much less chlorine and other chemicals.” Andy Tsavos, General Manager, Nikki Beach, Koh Samui. “My pool service tried just about every chemical there is for swimming pools to clear up the green, cloudy water of my home pool. When I put the PoolRx unit in my pool basket my water literally became crystal clear within hours, and has stayed that way! With less chlorine and clean, clear water, my entire family is now happily enjoying the pool again.” Paul Watson, Tropical Murphy’s, Koh Samui. “All I can say is that my pool went from green/brown to crystal blue in 12 hours! I had tried everything before this….large amounts of chemicals, even running the pump for 5 days straight, but nothing worked. PoolRx does everything it claims….the water is crystal clear, I’m using less chlorine, the grout is white again, and the water is much more enjoyable to swim in.” Peter Galpin, Villa Owner, Koh Samui. editorial True Images
MY TOP 3 IN THIS EDITION
The postcard image that Thailand portrays is slightly frayed around its edges. But you have to ask yourself if this is altogether a bad thing. Since the late 1970’s, when tourism took a giant leap forward in expanding what were once coconut plantations and slightly populated islands around the Kingdom, the economy of the nation gained strength and momentum through the prosperous plans that Thailand would become a country based on tourism. But something has gone wrong. Battered and beaten the tourism module for success has been disfigured by different coloured shirts, and by poor choices of Prime Ministers, activists and even the common people. The dreams of peace and serenity that once were embraced by foreigners looking to find solitude on Editor in Chief an uninhabited beach is now riddled with a Western silence, all due to the risk Glenn R. Wallis involved with visiting a Kingdom in peril. If you read Thai Visa, you might have seen this headline: “Amid a sharp drop in tourist arrivals to Thailand, the country’s tourism agencies were alarmed and strongly urging the government to provide urgent measures to rescue the beleaguered industry. Thailand’s tourist arrivals have sharply declined to a critical level. In June alone, the number of tourist arrivals has dropped from 165,000 in the same period of 2008, to 27,000 in 2009 due to the Influenza outbreak.” Uncontrolled flooding, military presence, airport closures, civil unrest and a rise in the costs of travel and visa issues have also punctured the presence of the tourist cash flow. For the moment there is a kind silence in Thailand. But isn’t this where it all began? Isn’t this the reason that we began to seek out Thailand as a holiday destination? This is also why things may not be as bad as they appear. The beaches are yours, there are no lines to stand in to get on the ferry to your favourite island, the hotels are not over-booked and you may even get a free upgrade. And if you’ve been contemplating taking the plunge and living in paradise, now is the time to buy. Land, houses and businesses have dropped in value so drastically that you can now acquire your piece of heaven for a fraction of the prices they soared to only one year ago. Now is the season for opportunists, and despite the tattered edges of what has become labelled as paradise, there is a fantastic silver lining to this cloud. Take advantage of it while the time is right. Fear is a strong persuader, and as long as the news reports mimic Henny Penny with global statements of “The sky is Falling!” the doors of opportunity should remain open for you. There is danger in Thailand, don’t get us wrong. There is also danger in walking down your own streets, in your own countries, and even from your own neighbours. Know that Thailand is not Somalia, and that tourism is recognised as a major source of income for many Thais. The last thing that they want to happen is for everyone to go away. For the moment there is quiet in Thailand, and however you look at it one thing is for certain. The peaceful idyllic beaches, the romantic and picturesque countryside and the beauty of Thai culture in its historic temples and cities are only truly affected by one thing; too many tourists. Consider yourself lucky to have braved your venture into Thailand, overlooking the warnings and trials of travel. You are about to experience Thailand much as it was 40 years ago. Silent.
breaking bones, not just nails I find something truly stimulating about a woman who not only has the confidence and strength to learn an ancient art form, but who challenges the dominance of a male sport. Thailand has become a training ground for women word-wide to engage and perfect the martial art of Muay Thai Kickboxing. I step into the ring to find out what they are capable of. Page 14.
Rescue at your service I was completely amazed to find out that there is an emergency and rescue team of people on Koh Samui, predominantly of Thai origins, who are at our service free of charge. If you lack the insurance to cover any emergency or ambulance service, or simply do not know who to call for help, no matter what the situation then read this. It could save your life! Page 22.
Enjoy.

There are some very incredible people on Samui who often go unnoticed. We would like to take this opportunity to point out a family of good Samaritans on Samui who offer a home – FREE of charge- to more than 35 cats, over 30 dogs and one squirrel. Without the aid of donations or any other support, Khun Gan and Khun Tuck, owners of the Garden Centres in Maenam and Baan Tai, single handedly have adopted these poor creatures, and tend to their needs. If you have the opportunity, stop by one of their garden shops to view the scene as the animals come out of hiding around dinner-time. And while you’re there, have a look at the assortment of beautiful orchids they have on sale.

ith eco-tourism and sustainable travel being the hottest topic on the tourist circuits since someone mentioned backpacks, it’s no hard job to find yourself a green getaway. These days however, the colour green comes in many different shades, and unfortunately, not all greens are created equal.
One such company which has stood the test of time, setting standards for eco-tourism across the world and whose green heart has grown from roots set down in a genuine spirit of earth stewardship, is John Gray’s SeaCanoe. The long list of eco-tourism awards over the years for the company’s efforts to preserve the natural environment and support the local communities began with an EMMY award in 1985 for a production following Gray’s ‘Natural History by Sea Kayak’ tours in Hawaii. The rolls of recognition continued over the years with the National Geographic Adventure Magazine listing SeaCanoe Vietnam in its ‘World Top 25 Adventures’ as well as receiving six major eco-tourism awards within 5 years for SeaCanoe Thailand.
When stepping aboard a kayak with John Gray’s SeaCanoe, you embark upon a journey into another world, a world of pirate caves and undersea gardens where trees have legs and fish can walk.
Founder of SeaCanoe, John ‘Caveman’ Gray admits that he was given a head start in life when it comes to putting the environment first; “I was brought up on this – my father was an environmentalist and so I was learning about how our actions impact the earth when I was a young boy – and that was a long time ago!” Having recently celebrated his 60th birthday during a week-long clean-up operation of the local Thai waters with his university students, Gray’s passion and drive towards environmental protection grows ever stronger, and his dedication permeates the tours he leads. John Gray’s SeaCanoe currently operates in five different countries around the Pacific - Hawaii, Thailand, Vietnam, Fiji and the Philippines - leading tours through the dramatic natural wonders which the area has to offer. Each location offers a unique
10
experience quite unlike the others; whether it’s the dreamlike portraits of Vietnam’s Halong Bay, the mysterious sea caves of Thailand’s Phang-Nga Bay or the pristine perfection of Puerto Princessa in the Philippines. Each trip will leave you bewitched by the beauty, not just of the location but of the experience on the whole.

“I’ve had at least two paddling partners cry while I was paddling them in inflatables,” Gray tells us. “The first was a 93-year old lady I took kayak surfing off Waikiki in Hawaii where we rode a six footer wave. When I asked about the tears she said, “I watch those surfers every day from my top floor condo, and I’ve always dreamed of riding a wave. I knew it was impossible, but I just did it.” The second was a Quadriplegic. I tied him in and we paddled the Windward side. I watched him carefully, and noticed the tears. I asked if he had salt spray in his eyes. “No,” he explained, “it’s just that I’ve been in a hospital room the past 12 years and this is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.” Central to the philosophy of SeaCanoe is an emphasis on the local environment, culture and community. The limited number of guests on each trip means that there are excellent chances for spotting some of the exotic and tropical wildlife in the area, while keeping the impact as low as possible. All SeaCanoe guides are trained in kayaking skills, first aid, English, geology and ecology to guarantee that they have the information and skills at hand to deliver the high quality of experience which SeaCanoe is so famous for. And by using local guides, SeaCanoe ensures that the local communities receive the incentives and knowledge to actively take steps towards conservation, while at the same time, the local economy directly benefits from the presence of the company. So whether you want to soar with the white-bellied sea eagles and hornbills of Thailand, coast alongside the volcanic cliffs of Hawaii or immerse yourself in the ecological Eden of Puerto Princessa, the experience which unfolds before you as you follow the gentle wake of John Gray’s kayak is an unforgettable experience.

“Drinking bad coffee is kind of like kissing your sister.” Thursten Howell III (Gilligan’s Island)

hile on your travels through the wonderful kingdom of Thailand, you might have found yourself around the breakfast table looking into what you thought was a divine cup of java, only to realise that things are not quite as they should be. The typical colour of your coffee will vary from a warm milky blend to a hint of dark-roast fusion spinning round your porcelain mug. But what your travels have revealed to you is that Thailand coffee is of the instant variety in most cases, and as you pluck your spoon from the muck you wonder where the real coffee is hiding. Coffee is the best thing to douse the sunrise with. ~ Drew Sirtors Now don’t get yourself all worked up into a caffeine withdrawalinduced convulsion, we want you to enjoy your holiday as your perky self. Even better yet, we want you bouncing around the beaches and off the walls of your catamaran while enjoying some of the best coffee in the world. And despite what you might have served to you, Thailand does have great coffee. Thailand is in fact a coffee nation, ranked third (after Indonesia and Vietnam) in Southeast Asia, in annual raw coffee production. While there are many species of coffee trees in the world, only Arabica and Robusta have major economic significance, both of which are grown in Thailand. “I never laugh until I’ve had my coffee.” ~ Clark Gable Here are the coffee facts...At present, Thailand produces approximately: • 50,000 - 80,000 tons of Robusta coffee each year, of which about 40% (ca. 30,000 tons) are processed locally and about 60% (ca. 50,000 tons) is exported. • A few thousand tons of Arabica coffee, which are almost entirely processed locally. Stir in Boncafé Once the only, and definitely the first European Coffee Roaster in South East Asia, Boncafé International humbly established itself in Singapore in 1962, under a small zinc-roofed building at Jalan Rajawali (Jurong), which housed its roasting plant with only four staff.

Under the vision of Mr Werner Ernst Huber, a Swiss National living and working in Singapore as a commodities trader, Boncafé has grown from a humble supplier of refined coffee products to a fully fledged coffee institution that celebrates the history, knowledge and expression of Man’s relationship with coffee. It began with a chance encounter with the wife of an expatriate newspaperman who ruled that it was impossible to find a “decent” cup of coffee anywhere in Singapore. “Science will never come up with a better office communication system than the coffee-break” ~ Earl Wilson We requested an interview with the prestigious CEO of Boncafé Thailand Group, Mr. Urs T. Brunner, to see what he had to say about the coffee trends and growth within Thailand. Mr. Brunner had also recently completed a film utilising the coffee industry in Thailand. “Movies are as much a niche product as coffee, and as much a business proposition,” said Brunner, who recently completed his first feature film, ‘Bitter Sweet’, which uses the coffee industry as the background to a multinational love story. The film was shot in the rarely seen coffee plantations of Krabi, with the closing shots in Brunner’s own coffee-making plant. Inspired by ‘Sideways,’ which boosted the sales of Merlot and Pinot Noir wines, Brunner wanted the same result for coffee. The Boncafé factory in Thailand sells 1,000 tonnes of coffee domestically. -- What are Boncafé services? We are one of the biggest fresh gourmet coffee manufacturers in Southeast Asia, therefore, we supply coffee for anyone who wishes to purchase Thai premium quality coffee. Besides that, we also import, sell, and service leading coffee machines from Europe such as Saeco, La Marzocco, Egro, and so on. Aiming to be ‘one-stop service’ for coffee entrepreneur, we also supply instant powder mixes for tea and chocolate, as well as liquid juice concentrate and tropical gourmet jams. Sauces and syrups along with coffee cups and barista tools can also be found in our showrooms nationwide. We are also offering coffee business opportunity with our fresh coffee vending machine. -- Is Boncafé the leader in the gourmet coffee market in Thailand? How far have you expanded overseas? Considering our core competencies, which are the ability to offer a complete coffee solution as well as technical services, I believe we are second to none in Thailand. As for overseas, we are very strong in Asia and the Middle East. We also have a lot more customers in Europe and the US. We have established Boncafé associated companies in Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and Dubai. -- Is your coffee locally grown? Are all of your blends concocted solely by Boncafé? To the first question, yes. We believe in the riches of Thai soil. Everything is locally grown in Thailand, except for decaffeinated coffee and instant coffee, which contributes to a very small amount of our whole range of blends.
Given enough
Second question is also yes. All of our branded blends are our own creations. We have a variety of blends to suit anyone’s taste from very strong morning kick to mild and aromatic shade-grown coffee. -- How well is Thai coffee doing in International market? I am a European myself and I do love coffee. Personally, I believe Thai coffee can stand up to any other coffee origin. The best proof for this is the fact that we can sell pure Thai coffee blends not only in Thailand, but as far as many five-star hotels in Dubai -- a city that is immersed in wealth and luxurious choices. Thai coffee is considered very ‘exotic’; therefore desirable and valuable to the International market. -- What do you perceive as your strength that could save you from this current economic climate? I believe that our core strength is that we offer top quality products and services at very reasonable prices. Even though Boncafé in our days is a renowned brand and sold all over Asia, in the Middle East, in Australia, Europe and also the US, we have never made our customers pay for our International brand recognition. We still use 100% Thai raw materials and sell top quality Boncafé blends at both locally and highly competitive prices. -- Has Thai coffee consumers’ buying behaviour changed? Thai coffee consumers have certainly become more sophisticated and more knowledgeable about coffee, and as such, more demanding. That’s a wonderful trend that is challenging for the whole coffee industry as well as for Boncafé, and forces us to constantly innovate and improve. We believe that this trend will continue. What is also very encouraging is the fact that Thai people have started to understand and value that Thailand grows good coffee on its own soil, and that imported beans aren’t any better than local ones. About 10 years ago, when lots of foreign coffee shop chains and foreign coffee brands pushed into the market, there was a sort of a belief that coffee from abroad is what you should drink. That’s gone now and Thai people realise that Thai coffee can stand up against its foreign competitors anytime, anyplace. For us, who have made it our mission to produce the best Thai coffees possible from purely Thai raw materials and sell these Thai coffees worldwide, recognition at home means a lot. “I’ll quit coffee. It won’t be easy drinking my Bailey’s straight, but I’ll get used to it. It’ll still be the best part of waking up.” ~ From the television show Will and Grace

Ancient Arts for the Originally women were banned from exercising this art form, although many Thai women know enough of the fighting techniques to stand off an attacker, or to kick your ass for not taking out the garbage.
W
hen thinking about the connotations of the ancient art form of Muay Thai, or Thai KickBoxing as it has become more widely known, muscular and sweat riddled warriors come to mind, knees and elbows dangerously trained to crush and conquer. The masters of Muay Thai initially derived this art from the need for close contact and hand to hand combat in difficult terrain, from their early threats of invasion. In hand-to-hand combat, weapons become clumsy and therefore elbows, knees, feet and fists became more practical. Now considered Thailand’s national sport, it has risen in the eyes of martial artists to be one of the most difficult and toughest of the arts. Originally women were banned from exercising this art form, although many Thai women know enough of the fighting techniques to stand off an attacker, or to kick your ass for not taking out the garbage. Today you can see children, men and women practicing harmoniously side by side at any Dojo in Thailand. For women, learning this art has many benefits beyond competition. It is a science, an artful skill, and most importantly a discipline. The beauty of the sport lies in precision and placement of blows or defensive manoeuvres, agility and mental focus, and where size of body has little to no significance. In fact, the women who are attracted to learning Muay Thai come from many different walks of life, some of whom you would never think knew how to make you cry in the blink of an eye. Martial arts have the amazing outcome of a potentially small and defenceless person becoming the most lethal and fastest person in a group. In Muay Thai, the unsuspected woman in the class is no exception. An overgrown steroid brute of a man can easily be made to hobble back to his corner with a few quick and well-placed blows from a secretary, a mother, a nurse, or even a student who is only onehalf of the man’s weight.
Using the human body as a Weapon Muay Thai is referred to as “The Science of Eight Limbs” from its strength in using two hands, two shins, two knees and two elbows. Some call it “NawaArwut” or the Art of Nine Limbs, to include the head.
14
ground glass was mixed with glue and spread on the strips bound to the hands, resulting in the bloodiest matches recorded in the history of the sport. Muay Thai uses all the weapons of the human body; the fists, elbows, chin and the knees creating the eight points of contact practitioners use when striking their opponents. Due to its emphasis on body conditioning, consistent training builds up a person’s strength and endurance. Obviously Muay Thai is a full-contact sport, and potential students should be prepared to bring home some bruises and cuts, especially at the beginning. As with any physical activity the body adjusts with frequent training. Throughout its history, Muay Thai has always been a sport for the people, as well as been regarded as a military fighting skill. In its golden ages, the people of Thailand have trained and practiced the sport whether they were the King or a commoner. In fact it was a part of the school national curriculum right up to the 1920’s, when it was withdrawn because it was felt that the injury rate was too high. Enthusiasts continued to study it in gyms and clubs just as they do today. Those who regarded Muay Thai as an art form have been instrumental in moving it from the battlefield to
the ring. They have been as much a part of making it a sport as have the Kings of Thailand. One of the prime movers in transforming the sport was the Tiger King, who not only influenced fighting styles but also the equipment. During the reign of the Tiger King, the hands and forearms began being bound with strips of horse hair. This was to serve a dual purpose; to protect the fighter and inflict more damage on the opponent. Later, these were replaced by hemp ropes or starched strips of cotton. For particular challenge matches and with the fighter’s agreement, ground glass was mixed with glue and spread on the strips, resulting in the bloodiest matches recorded in the history of the sport. The changes that the sport has undergone have been to the equipment used, rather than radical alterations to the actual art form. For example, Thai fighters have always worn groin guards. A kick or knee to the groin was a perfectly legal move up until the 1930’s. In these early days, the protection was made from tree bark or sea shells held in place with a piece of

cloth tied between the legs and around the waist. The sport was eventually codified and today’s rules and regulations were introduced. Rope bindings of the arms and hands were abandoned and gloves took their place.
countries in our present time. And, more specifically, who would have foreseen the massive leap in female participation levels? Women’s involvement in the competitions has escalated to a point where a second ring is required to accommodate the numbers.
International Federation of Muay Thai Amateur
As the men’s competitions developed over the years, from 1990 female fighters looked on and began to question about their own status. So, in 1999 at the Stadium in Bangkok, the first amateur women’s fights took place. Since it was the first time for this competition, it began in time-honoured fashion as a demonstration of skills and techniques. In front of an enthusiastic crowd, many of the myths about women
It was IFMA who staged the first female World Cup and has successfully promoted female Muay Thai very strongly around the world. When Amateur Muay Thai first came to prominence under the IFMA umbrella, sceptics never would have thought it would grow from a mere 19 countries to include over 100

The highlight was a battle between Amy Birch from Australia and Rungaroon Sor Fongnam from Thailand, undoubtedly two of the best. It was a great fight that ensured women’s involvement in the World Cup was here to stay. Female Muay Thai unmistakably has become as popular, and perhaps even a little more, as the male sport. Women from all over the world now travel to Thailand to perfect their art. The quest is to train within some of the most famous Muay Thai Gyms, and with the Thai Masters who teach there. You will see them running the roadways under the unforgiving sun, or tangled in a maze of limbs and grunting with animal-like sounds alongside their
male peers, as they pummel their sparring partners within the training grounds. So, the next time that you witness a woman, no matter what her physical stature, standing next to the Muay Thai bags in the gym, you might just want to stand back for a few moments. And if she smiles at you with a glint in her eye, you may want to take off your gloves and hit the shower.

Piracy in the Aden Sea A Lily-Livered Braveheart? Braveheart accommodates ten guests over three decks, topped by a wonderful sun-drenched flying bridge deck – ideal for the waters off of Thailand’s south-western coast. But getting her safely from the Caribbean to Phuket was a labour that involved avoiding the Pirates of the Aden Sea.

he Braveheart is a 163’ (49.6 m) Swedeship/Hakvoort. After serving as a popular luxury charter vessel in Europe for several seasons, Braveheart made her way to the United States to be presented at the boat show by the International Yacht Collection. Now privately owned and available for world-wide charter, she is indeed the vessel that pirates lie in wait dreaming to capture. Graced by long, lean, traditional lines, she was launched in 1989 and has undergone a $2 million refit over the past two years. Large windows that look out on the ever-changing sea, line her main deck and sky lounge. Five guest staterooms with queen-sized beds allow her owner to give 10 guests equivalent accommodations, while the master suite, with its lavish bath, is fit for a king. Stepping downstairs by a private stairway in the master stateroom is a private gymnasium. Chartered to make her way to the luxury Yacht Haven Marina of Phuket so that her new owner could see her, there was only one obstacle that her navigator, Capt. Lyle Stevenson was apprehensive about traversing.
Because the Sea of Aden is in overlapping territorial waters for these countries, it makes matters of jurisdiction troublesome. Container ship owners often pay ransoms to regain their cargo and crew, while Luxury yachts such as the Braveheart are pirated to be used in attacking other vessels. Some 21,000 ships a year, or more than 50 a day cross the Gulf of Aden, which links the Mediterranean Sea, the Suez Canal and the Red Sea to the Indian Ocean. The growing chaos in impoverished Somalia, which has had no effective government for nearly two decades, has allowed an Islamic insurgency to flourish in the country, and at the same time speedboat bandits lucratively attack ships offshore.
The Gulf of Aden lay ahead of them. The Sea of Aden lies offshore the Middle East country of Yemen and the African countries of Somalia and Eritrea. At a point where the Red Sea meets the Indian Ocean, a narrow passage called the Bab el Mandeb widens for about 350 miles/500 kilometres. Here container ships and other boats can pass through on their way East without making the lengthy trip around the continent of Africa. Somalia has experienced an ongoing Civil War since 2006, when the United States backed Ethiopian troops and invaded the area to prop up the Somali Transitional Federal Government from various affiliated Islamist militias battling for the region.
The Gulf of Aden and Somalia’s coast are now the world’s most dangerous waters. There were 199 incidents reported to the IMB Piracy Reporting Centre in 2008. Pirates got on board 115 vessels, attacked another 31 and fired upon 23 vessels. About 581 crewmembers were taken hostage, nine kidnapped, nine killed, seven missing. Between July and September, Somali pirates hijacked 26 vessels, taking 537 crew-members hostage. Somali pirates fired upon 21 vessels. Of the 63 reported incidents in the region, 51 were in the Gulf of Aden and 12 off the east coast of Somalia. Once under attack, there is little that a ship can do except increase its speed. Most merchant vessels and luxury yachts are unarmed, with the exception of

a few Israeli ships that have machine guns on board. The standard practice is to take ‘evasive manoeuvres’, which basically means steering out of the path of pirate vessels, or generating a large wave to throw the smaller speedboats off course. A more ‘close in’ tactic is to use high-pressure fire hoses, meant to douse flames on board, to wash off pirates who are attempting to board the ship. However, high-speed water jets can do little against automatic weapons and rocket-propelled grenades that the sea bandits carry. In order to avoid a possible catastrophe, Captain Lyle Stevenson and the crew of the Braveheart chose to take matters into their own hands and preserve the luxury yacht at all costs. They would piggy-back their way through, on a much larger and faster vessel. “My take on this endeavour, as I sat in Malta commissioned to bring Braveheart into Asia through the Gulf of Aden, was as I explained to my client; I could not see myself and the crew living in a mud hut in Somalia through the ill fate of being pirated for ransom. The motor Yacht Braveheart would make a dandy mother ship for future pirates to ply their trade on other vessels, traversing the big blue ball at the speed of a bicycle. Our client is not only a great Philanthropist, but his concern for the well being of the crew was paramount considering the situation at hand. He vouched to commission me to search for alternate options, and loading Braveheart aboard a heavy lift vessel became our escape route. In Malta we commissioned two heavy lift vessels. One to lift us up and out of the water, and gently placing us aboard the second vessel with the use of two cranes. A one month passage through to Singapore and we were lifted by the floating crane ‘Asian Hercules’ back into the salt chuck, where we set about the journey up the Strait of Malacca into the Yacht Haven Marina, of Phuket Thailand.” Without doubt, the pirates of Aden watched in misery as their lost treasure sped by them, untouchable upon its voyage through the Gulf of Aden. Astonished they must have cast their one eyed glares across the gulf, with only a pitiful... “Arrr...thar goes our bounty!” to bid the Braveheart farewell. An Indian restaurant in London is celebrating the DVD release of Slumdog Millionaire in its own, special way. It’s called Samundari Khazana— “seafood treasure”—and, at £2,000, it’s the most expensive curry in the world. Bombay Brassiere has packed this platter full of the most expensive ingredients they could find. Devon crab and white truffle and a half tomato filled with Beluga caviar and dressed with gold leaf are just the start of this lavish dish. A Scottish lobster, also coated with gold, four abalone and four shelled and hollowed quails’ eggs filled with even more caviar round out the dish. Bombay Brassiere’s head chef, Prahlad Hegde, expects to sell the dish despite the recession that makes the £2,000—over US $3,200—price tag seem ludicrous to some. Regardless of its success as a standalone dish, the hype surrounding the world’s most expensive curry will undoubtedly bring some new faces to the Brassiere. www.bombaybrasserielondon.com

world’s most expensive pizza Pizza is one of the staples of the modern American diet, especially amongst the young and the lower class. It’s generally regarded as a cheap and convenient meal with more going for it than its fast food competition. So when we heard about chef Domenico Crolla’s “Pizza Royale 007”, we were quite shocked. The 12 inch pizza pie is densely packed with an assortment of some of the world’s most expensive food ingredients, such as lobster marinated in cognac, caviar soaked in champagne, sun blush tomato sauce, Scottish smoked salmon, venison medallions, prosciutto, and vintage balsamic vinegar. In addition to all these fine ingredients, it’s topped with a significant amount of edible 24-carat gold flakes. Mr. Crolla originally claimed that the novelty luxury pizza was worth some $3,700, and he would auction it on eBay and donate the proceeds to The Fred Hollows Foundation. The Fred Hollows Foundation is a UK organisation that seeks to eradicate avoidable blindness in developing countries. The auction ended November 19, 2006 with the highest bid by Italian lawyer Maurizio Morelli reaching £2,150. That’s approximately $4,200 in US dollars!

When the heir of the Persse family estate, including the Nun’s Island Distillery in Galway, Ireland, decided to pursue racehorse training instead of continuing the family business, he probably didn’t realize he was creating what may be the world’s most expensive Irish whiskey—that is, if anyone ever buys it. According to whisky seller Ken Thomas’ story of the expensive bottle, it was brought to him by a customer who had inherited it from a lady friend of the Persse heir. Dating from the late 1800s, the 25 Year Old Pure Pot Still Whiskey was one of the last bottles produced by the Nun’s Island Distillery, which closed its doors around 1913. Thomas’ Arkwrights Whisky and Wines store is offering the bottle, on behalf of its owner, for £100,000 (US $143,020). If it sells at that price, it won’t just be the most expensive Irish whiskey ever sold—it’ll be the overall most expensive whisky ever sold. www.whiskyandwines.com

Every day something breaks. Sometimes it even appears that the world is breaking apart at the seams. Dangers lurk in every corner, and there are times when we are faced with tragedy at every turn, breaking down our defences of our sturdy belief that we are perpetually safe.
P
eople’s homes are broken into; legs, arms and wrists are broken; snakes, scorpions and tokays(the big spotted lizards living on our houses) break through the safety nets that surround us, and hearts are even broken by the actions of those we hold close to them. Fantastic fish break the boundaries between land and sea and find themselves awaiting death upon the shores, while those whom we trust in our time of need break the moral code of ethics and allow greed to consume the very deeds they are duty-bound to complete. For every action there is not always an equal and opposite reaction. Sometimes we can even find that the reaction to such events topple these actions with unprecedented compassion. So when you find yourself sitting in shock, not knowing what to do about the crisis that has unfolded before your very eyes, there is someone you can call on for help. They will not drop you off on the side of the road if you have no money to pay for the ambulance services, and they will not scoff at you for getting lost in the jungle. We focus this article on the Island of Koh Samui and a group of more than 200 volunteers who over the past 17 years have given their time, their own money, and who often endanger their lives to help, protect and serve the public. They are the Samui Rescue Foundation. There are many other such organisations across the Kingdom of Thailand following the principles and precepts Samui Rescue has adopted, those of the Chinese Buddhist Monk ‘Dye-Ock-Gung’ who founded the concept of helping without expectations of reciprocation. These teams of volunteers coordinate their services with all of the responders in their areas by monitoring police, fire and hospital emergency radio frequencies. Often they are the first to arrive upon the scene. These good samaritans of Thailand come in many shapes, colours and sizes, and the experiences they have witnessed over the years is astounding to say the least. In April and May of 2009, Samui Rescue voluntarily provided the professional care in the following list of major rescues and social services for the local community without asking for a single Thai Baht in return. Accidents: 273 Injuries: 216 Deceased by an accident: 7 Deceased transferred to a temple, hospital, home: 34 Deceased transferred to another province within Thailand: 5 Injured people transferred to hospital, home: 82 Aid provided to injured caused by other people: 15 Donated coffins: 8 Aiding lost people: 6 Burials: 2 Snakes Captured: 6
And then let’s add to the list...Rescued Dolphins: 2 All within 61 days, and this does not include the varied strange requests to rescue dogs and cats, lizards from homes and drunken residents fallen down in the streets. Lynn and Alan, two of the three foreigner volunteers on Samui (Alan’s son Ged is also a volunteer), took some time out of their busy lives to share some of the joys and heartaches that are affiliated with doing such valiant work. “I don’t want you to talk about us,” Lynn was quick to state, “Please tell people about what these volunteers have been doing for so long, and who conduct their work pretty much unnoticed by the general population. They are all heroes, they are Thai, and they do it from their hearts.” With scanners resting on my desk, squawking every few moments with tidbits of information from fellow volunteers and emergency services operating on Samui, Lynn and Alan tell us of some of the work that they do, and how it all comes together. “Rescue scenarios are completely mind-blowing. I don’t speak Thai,” Lynn says, “but what happens on a scene occurs without a word being spoken sometimes. Everyone knows exactly what they are doing, and what needs to be done. I remember one situation where I found myself at a scene not on duty. I had no gloves, and the man that was injured was panicking and bleeding from every pore of his body from a motorcycle accident. As I stood back and tried to calm him down, I suddenly felt a pair

of rubber gloves drape across my shoulder, as the Samui Rescue team arrived and saw me in the thick of the action. Not a word was shared between me and my colleagues, but they responded to what was happening without missing a heartbeat.” Men, women and even children are the core of the Samui Rescue Foundation. They are trained as First Responders and meet Paramedic requirements by local hospitals, police and fire departments providing free paramedic and ambulance transport services for ANY kind of emergency. They have stations circumventing the island to include their Headquarters in Nathon with teams in Maenam, ByLaem, Lamai, Lipa Noi, Nathon, Napalarn and Saket to service all of Samui. Their forces are focused away from the areas of Chaweng, where most of the hospitals are near and require little to no assistance from first response teams, however they assist when there is a large number of people involved in an accident or a special event taking place. “The children do not directly aid the people,” Alan indicates, “they are on scene to help us. They are like that third, fourth or fifth hand that you sometimes need. Gauze and bandages will appear as you are trying to stop major bleeding. They hold the flashlights or umbrellas so that we can see what we are doing. Without them, many people would not still be with us today.” 7 teams are on the standby 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with 40 to 50 people at the ready for any emergency. They are so efficient at their positions that teams can be mobilised within 30 seconds and on the scene within minutes of being dispatched.
“Not all of the stories are horrific or sad,” Alan shares with us. “But the job of a rescue volunteer does have those moments when you wish that you were a mascot in Disneyland.” Alan solemnly described the day he was called out to recover the body of a young woman’s father who had walked out and into the lake, committing suicide. “That one really touched me. She just sat there... waiting for him to come back.” Every day something is broken, but there is hope for those who fall into the hands of an uninvited fate. Every moment of every day on Samui, someone is waiting to put you back together. Samui Rescue Foundation is a self-sufficient volunteer group operating on public donations only. Their services are free to everyone, no matter what nationality or situation.
Grief stricken, this young girl waits for rescuers to retrieve her father who walked out into the lake.

Men Take Note!
Not Tonight Honey... There Really are reasons your lover may be giving you the Cold Shoulder, and it’s not because she’s fallen out of love with you, having an affair, or is just bored with your love-making. She genuinely just might be tired beyond her own control.
S
ure, we all know what it feels like to be tired, however the sense of what is known as fatigue is different. It refers to a lingering tiredness that is constant and limiting. While some people admit to feeling sleepy, with fatigue there’s usually a feeling of exhaustion without feeling drowsy. People who have had this experience say they are fatigued on arising in the morning, fatigued after mild activity such as grocery shopping, too fatigued to function adequately at work or do household chores, and too fatigued to exercise or have sex. In most cases, there’s a reason for the fatigue, whether its poor time management, too much caffeine, anaemia, fibromyalgia, depression or even undiagnosed heart disease.
And to all of the men out there who also have had this experience, from the spectators bench, before you blame your ‘Mojo’ or turn the blame towards more serious accusations, learn what might be at the root of her unexplained tiredness, and what is recommended in resolving her fatigue. Fatigue that’s new or dramatic, prolonged or unexplained can be a signal of a serious medical problem like heart disease or anaemia. A lot of women hesitate to tell their doctors about low energy. But if you’re feeling any new kind of tired, speak up. Your physician should check for the usual suspects, like insomnia, stress, sleep apnoea, depression, and diabetes. If she rules those out, ask her to probe deeper for these often overlooked causes. Tired Blood Heavy menstrual periods, pregnancy, avoidance of red meat, or being a vegetarian or a serious distance runner can all drain your body’s stores of energizing iron, leaving you anaemic. That means underpowered red blood cells can’t deliver enough oxygen to every cell in your body. Your muscles may feel weak, your thinking gets cloudy. One in five women and half of all pregnant women may have low iron. Studies show that treating anaemia with iron supplements under a doctor’s care can relieve fatigue. (Never take iron supplements on your own—about one in 200 people have a genetic condition in which their bodies can’t process iron, leaving them vulnerable to overdose.) Other symptoms are apparent with abnormally pale skin, a fast heartbeat and irritability. Expect to get a short course of iron supplements and advice to follow an iron-rich diet. Your doctor will retest your blood in one to two months. If your iron levels are rising, you’ll continue on the same plan for a few more months to rebuild your reserves. If levels are still low, your doctor will look for other causes. These can include mild but chronic internal bleeding or compromised blood cell production. Food Allergies While food is supposed to give us energy, some doctors believe hidden food intolerances, or allergies can do the opposite. Even mild food intolerance can leave you feeling sleepy. Eat the offending food long enough, and you could find yourself feeling continually exhausted. Evidence indicates food intolerance as a cause of fatigue and even suggests that fatigue may be an early warning sign of food intolerance. If you suspect that food may be behind all that yawning, start with an elimination diet, cutting out foods that cause you to feel sleepy within 10 to 30 minutes of eating them. You can also talk to your doctor about a food allergy test. Sleep Apnoea If you’re not getting enough sleep, it stands to reason you’ll feel fatigued. But what if you don’t realize that your sleep is insufficient? This happens to millions of people with a condition called sleep apnoea, a sleep disorder that causes you to momentarily stop breathing, often many times during the night. Each time you stop breathing, you awaken just long enough to disrupt your sleep cycle, usually without being aware of it. More than one-third of adults snore at least a few nights a week, according to the National Sleep Foundation. Snoring is caused by the vibration of the soft parts of the throat while breathing in and out during sleep. Snoring can sometimes account for daytime symptoms such as excessive fatigue. But with sleep apnoea, a condition related to snoring, there are repeated periods when breathing stops during sleep. Obstructive sleep apnoea results in low oxygen levels in the blood because the blockages prevent air from getting to the lungs. The low oxygen levels also affect your heart and brain function. The only clue that you might have sleep apnoea is chronic fatigue. Both obesity and smoking are risk factors for sleep apnoea, so losing weight and quitting smoking are recommended. Sleeping on your side instead of your back may help eliminate mild sleep apnoea. Your doctor may prescribe a medical device called a CPAP that helps keep your airways open while you sleep. In severe cases of sleep apnoea, surgery is necessary to remove tissues that are blocking the airways. If left untreated, sleep apnoea can increase your risk of stroke or heart attack.

Samui’s towns and beaches
K
oh Samui is the 3rd largest island in Thailand, located within the calm waters of the Gulf of Thailand. This beautiful tropical paradise has been charming its visitors ever since the first tourists arrived in 1971. Originally established as a coconut plantation, the body of the island has been basically divided into beaches, with each one maintaining its own special atmosphere and attraction. Its hinterland consists of forested hills of limestone and granite, and the shoreline is made up of countless palm-fringed beaches and bays. Those who experience Samui are rewarded with an idyllic tropical retreat featuring white-sand beaches, a sapphire-blue sea, an abundance of tantalising Thai cuisine, and an extraordinarily warm and friendly native people. Koh Samui is 21 kilometres at its widest point and 25 at its longest, taking only about an hour to drive around. There is one major road, which circumvents the island, the ‘Ring Road’, while smaller roads track off to various areas of attraction and accommodation. There is something for everyone on Samui. Sophisticated retail outlets and a buzzing nightlife give way, for those with a sense of adventure, to the dramatic scenery and remote natural retreats still found within the interior. Rice paddies, jungle mountainsides, and the never-ending coconut plantations remain to this day, the beauty of Koh Samui.

Samui’s tOWNS AND bEACHES
Big Buddha
The island of Koh Samui has been a hidden treasure for paradise seekers over the past 40 years. Today the beaches remain to be the passion of the island, with resorts and hide-away bungalows spilling out and onto the white sands. Each beach on Samui has maintained its own personality, relating to the area that it lies within. Featured here are some of the highlights of each of these areas for the holiday traveller to enjoy. Chaweng
Chaweng is the longest and most popular beach on Samui. It is also the largest tourist centre with more than 1.5 million travellers visiting annually. 5 Star luxury resorts share the space with more economical accommodation choices, along with a 5 kilometre street of stalls and shops that sell everything Thailand is famous for. Prices are a little higher here than in other areas of the island, but the range of choices in food, accommodation and entertainment is impressive, making this beach and its surroundings, the center of activity for many visitors.
Lamai
Chaweng Beach
Lamai has often been referred to as Samui’s second beach, but there are many who believe it has a greater beauty than that of Chaweng. The waters are excellent for swimming and the beaches and streets are less crowded. The southern end of the bay features elegant granite boulders while the beach itself seems endless. The nightlife in Lamai hosts some excellent restaurants and bars scattered along its strip. The surrounding area notably hosts some of the islands best spas and health resorts available. If you wander off the beaten track here, you might get a glimpse of some true Thai culture.
Big Buddha Beach
If your stay is brief, Big Buddha Beach area offers convenience due to its close proximity to the airport, as well as to boats chartered for Koh Phangan and Koh Tao. Prices for accommodation and provisions remain reasonable, and there are a growing number of fine dining options to compliment the local Thai restaurants and beach bungalow cuisine. Facilities and services are abundant along the main road, making this one of the best locations for a vibrant night-life.The Big Buddha itself can be seen overlooking the entire area and remains to be the focal attraction.
Mae Nam
Tradional Shophouse in Nathon
The beach is a huge horseshoe of soft sand that offers a spectacular view of the neighbouring island of Koh Pangan. There are a number of good local restaurants and businesses along the beach, as well as located on the main ring road. Mae Nam is home to many of the island’s residential developments with a growing quantity of long-term visitors and expats, giving the area a strong sense of community. The hills behind Mae Nam provide the location for the island’s spectacular world-class golf resort.
Bophut
Bophut stands out as the only village on Samui that exudes authentic island charm. It consists of a single street lined with traditional shop-houses, many of which have been converted into restaurants, sales shops and guesthouses. The distinct designs of the beachside dining sector, as well as the chosen cuisine that is available, have created an exceptional Mediterranean atmosphere. Bophut is expanding constantly, generating new wining and dining options every year. Despite its growth, the essential seaside appeal remains, making it one of the island’s most attractive locations.
Lipa Noi and Taling Ngam
Bophut Beach
26
The unspoiled South-West Coast of Taling Ngam & Lipa Noi has seen the least change of any area on the island. The romantic coastline here overlooks the spectacular Five Islands and Anthong Marine Park. Several excellent beachside seafood restaurants, bungalows and resorts can be found scattered along the coast offering the most idyllic locations to watch the sun setting into the sea. Palms come right down to the water’s edge, dense greenery right up to the sands, with swimming an idyllic experience. Out to sea are the mountains of the mainland, distant and hazy, fading to purple as evening comes.

July at Kamalaya ... “feel life´s potential”
Hua Thanon
The Muslim fishing village of Hua Thanon offers a handful of seafood restaurants, but its main attraction lies in the ancient cultures of the local fishermen. Intricately painted wooden boats are used to this day to catch and deliver fish directly to the local markets. Take a stroll through its market and capture a glimpse into the lives of one of the island’s original communities. Beyond Hua Thanon, the southern coast offers some of the most unspoiled natural scenery on Samui. You will find quaint local villages and coconut plantations that have endured the test of time.
Nathon
This is the island’s main administrative centre. All government offices, banks, as well as the main ferry pier are located in Nathon, making it the most important place for communication with the Thai mainland. Nathon also boasts a number of original teak shop-houses, lining the quiet middle roads, showing the more traditional, Chinese influenced Samui life. Any major local events, ceremonies or celebrations are held in the car park in front of the main pier in Nathon. Visitors tend to pass through this beautiful village on their way to either Chaweng or Lamai, missing some of the least expensive shopping on the island. A nightly food market establishes itself here regularly, giving visitors their first taste of the delights available on Samui.
CHOENG MON
Choeng Mon is made up of a series of bays, speckled with white sandy beaches upon its coastline. Despite its close proximity to Chaweng, about 15 minutes north and 5 minutes from Big Buddha, the beaches have remained quiet and the waters clean. Choeng Mon’s wide sandy beaches feature a rock formation on one side, and the island of Koh Som that you can easily paddle out to on the other. This is a very family friendly area, with exclusive resorts abundantly situated along the water’s edge. Relatively upmarket, inexpensive accommodation is virtually nonexistent in this area. This lesser-known beach is located in a very secluded part of Koh Samui, on the northeast corner of the island where most of the bays have been given over to private residential developments.

arion Siepe, who is running the dive shop ‘Divers in Paradise’, originally hails from Germany, but has been living on Samui for 14 years, mainly working as a Diving Instructor. Back in Germany she had been working as a therapist with young adults. Initially she came to Thailand with the undertaking to learn Thai Massage. “I always have had plenty of interests, and I am definitely never bored!” Recently she has started working on a new project, despite the fact that she literally has two fulltime jobs already. It is not a coincidence that Marion has her diving facility at Paradise Beach Resort, a popular 4 Star Family Resort surrounded by a beautiful tropical gardens. Both the resort and its dive centre are actively engaged in environmental projects such as Green Island and GIDOA. Paradise Beach Resort has achieved its first award of “Environment Champion” by TUI, and Marion has proudly contributed towards it as well. Nonetheless, Marion’s main mission is still diving. Her dive shop offers diving classes from Beginner to Assistant Instructor, as well as Diving and Snorkelling Trips. Swimming classes are available too, and if you have no snorkel experience, Marion and her team are happy to give you instructions. For very brave kids from 8 years onwards, Marion organises ‘Bubblemaker Courses’ in the pool. Here children can get their first experience with equipment underwater. With a maximum depth of 2 metres, this desired challenge is safe and good fun for the kids. “It is a great way to get them started!” says Marion, and if desired the children can continue diving at a local reef or during a trip to Koh Tao, which often makes their holiday. Follow up courses such as Junior Scuba Diver and Junior Open Water can be done with 10 years +. “We are probably Samui’s leading dive centre when it comes down to the number of children we have been introducing this wonderful activity to. Parents are always absolutely astonished how much their kids love to go to (diving) school during their holidays. Sometimes they are almost an hour early and have been even waiting in front of our doors”, giggles Marion. However, Marion also emphasizes that no one should ever be pushed to go diving. Sometimes we have parents who expect their children to do too much or more than is actually good for them. Then we have to talk to them. The (age) rules for diving are set for special reasons, and under no circumstances should these facts be neglected! Although her own kids are like fish and really keen on joining her mum on her adventurous missions under water, they still have to grow older to become real divers. ‘It is quality not quantity which counts’, is one of Divers in Paradise’s high standard philosophies. “Some families come back to Paradise every year just to follow up their children’s diving career.” says Marion, and it is something she is very proud of. reparing with plans in the 4th quarter of 2009 to open a service centre on the island of Koh Samui, Mr. Peravate Kijburana, the Regional Vice President of Regional Operations South, and Mr. Paiboon Rinsakul, the Branch Manager of Suratthani, made a special appearance on the island to tie loose ends together. Their intentions are not surprising, considering that the numbers of AIS members on Samui are astronomical. Mr. Peravate indicated that approximately 50% of all AIS users from the Suratthani region are located on Samui, and 70% of their Platinum package subscribers are also from the paradise island. Nation-wide, AIS currently holds 25million subscribers in their database, establishing their presence in Thailand 19 years ago as the first private mobile network company.
“To lead and shape the communications market in Thailand through innovation, customer experience, network, people and culture.”
In order to continue to elevate their services, the shop that will open on Samui will host English speaking staff, and services that will move them to the top of the world class level they strive to achieve. Committed to the environment, the community and to their business partners, Mr. Peravate and Mr. Paiboon took the opportunity of visiting Samui to assist in a community event to clean the shorelines of the Bangrak Beach, joining alongside Bluewater School and the volunteers participating in the Sawadee.com Regatta.
The current services provided on Samui are available through the network offices of Telewiz, however with the continuing increase in business from the island and its growing populace of AIS subscribers, this move to enhance their services shows once again that their focus is on the client, and future clientele. • We commit to deliver superior and innovative services that can add value and enhance. • We commit to provide our customers with the best customer experience and best network quality. • We commit to drive entrepreneurialism and professional work culture to all our employees. • We commit to enhance value for our stakeholders and continuously dedicate to Corporate Social Responsibility. “We have never stopped developing and researching new technologies to fulfil your lifestyles anywhere anytime with the best network for today and in the future.” For 24 hour service contact: 1175 E-mail: myais@ais.co.th or go to their website for fast and user-friendly service. www.ais.co.th

he brains behind this Samui Fun Poker League is Patrick Pilon. He has always had a love for the game, and after meeting his future wife Karen at a Poker tournament in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, the love of the game grew to a new level.
Prizes will be awarded on each Wednesday and Saturday for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. Also, prizes will be awarded at the end of the leagues 2 month season for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place based on the players’ accumulation of points over the season.
They traveled around the world for a couple of years, never finding a place to play poker. Upon settling in Samui, and living here for over a year, the idea dawned on him to start up a league on the island.
Each tournament will have money donated for charity such as the Samui Dog and Cat Rescue Center. Samui Swing Bar also donates 20 baht per player towards the charity. Therefore, the more players there are, the higher the pot and the more money going towards charity, so bring your friends! They have constructed real poker tables with real chips to make the experience even more fun!
Samui Fun Poker League is the first and only fun based Texas Hold’em competition on Samui. The fun is hosted by Swing Bar Samui and Rich Resort which are located on central Lamai beach behind McDonalds, and beside the Lamai Inn. The competition will start on Wednesday May 5th at 8pm and will continue on each Wednesday and Saturday at 8pm for a duration of 2 months.

Un-f@#king Believable!
Every Pool Needs this Product! How much do you spend on keeping your pool clean every year? Now take a minute and add this up... I mean really do it. Typically annual costs for chlorine, algaecides, and other products add up to a lot more than you would ever guess. Now, what I’m about to tell you will make you shake your head at the amount of money that you’ve been spending on trying to just make your pool water look clean and clear, and totally free of all algae, bacteria and viruses. In truth, every Baht, Penny or Kroner of that money has been for purchasing toxic chemicals, which should probably get you arrested for being a major donor to the environmental pollution problem. No matter where you live in the world, the sight of a crystal clear swimming pool brings to mind tropical island getaways and the pristine waters of warm blue seas. The trouble is that most often when you gaze into a swimming pool, your apparitions of paradise dissolve as quickly as your intentions of jumping in, your visions of indulgence wiped-out by the murky pool waters. I’m sure that I represent most owners as I hang my head in disbelief of the new image my pool is reflecting, and quietly mutter...
“It was so clear only yesterday.” So what would you think if I told you that for 3,500THB a year (Yes, I said A YEAR) for the average villa-sized pool, that you could have clean, crystal clear and environmentally safe swimming water within about 24 hours?
You’d probably call me a liar and say that I’ve had a little too much Thai whiskey. Every once in a while however, a miracle widget comes along that actually works, and which also doesn’t cost you your annual poolside beverage allowance to buy. Well my aqua-loving friends, I’ve found one! The name of this product is PoolRx, and it is EPA approved. (That’s the approval from the stringent U.S. Environmental Protection Agency)
32
It’s a patented mineral based system that provides a natural and safe way to sanitise and clarify swimming pools. It works like this: The PoolRx minerals are inserted into your pool water, completely invisible to the pool user, and work 24 hours a day to kill all bacteria, algae and viruses, while keeping the pool crystal clean. That’s it! The best thing about PoolRx is that it is so easy to use….you simply drop the PoolRx unit into your pump basket….and it requires no changes to your pool equipment, or additional pool hardware. The product is added to your pool by your pool professional as needed. Sometimes only the minerals…a ‘PoolRx Booster’ may need to be added after 6 months depending on your pool usage and the weather conditions in your area. Another bonus factor to this product is that Eco Pool Solutions (EPS) Asia Ltd. is based on Koh Samui in Thailand, and is the master distributor for this product across Asia Pacific. EPS was founded to bring innovative pool maintenance solutions utilising their extensive experience in swimming pool care from the U.S. markets. Their primary focus is on helping people to save money and to ultimately make swimming pool maintenance easier. “We completely changed our service company by introducing the PoolRx to our customers. Our customers now have clear, clean, eco-friendly pools… we have had 90% less issues with algae and we are using 75% less chlorine compared to the prior year. Bottom line, we have happier customers and we are saving money.” Robert Hartman, General Manager, North Bay Pool and Spa, California. Now I have to admit that when most people tell me their focus is on me saving money, I always look for the small print. So I did, and the only thing I could find is that you will still have to use a minimal amount of chemicals, but about 70 % less than before adding the PoolRx. Commercial pools and resort pools may require more than one PoolRx unit, depending on the size of the pool. The savings alone add up to
thousands of baht per year, in addition to all of the environmental benefits. Dan Riordan, the President of EPS Asia Ltd, has this to say about the product: “I have many years of experience in the swimming pool industry and I have never seen a product that is a win/win for everybody. A win for the consumer, with a crystal clear, low chemical swimming pool. A win for the service professional with happier customers who now can have clean, clear, easier to maintain pools. And a win for the environment with fewer chemicals used in the water!” Kim from Amberjack Pool Service in Tampa Bay Florida, reports success from the Eastern U.S. seaside. “We are typically skeptical when trying new products, but thought we’d give PoolRx a try to see for ourselves. After testing PoolRx in several of our pools, we were nothing short of amazed. We since added PoolRx to several other pools including some problematic pools, and others where the customers wanted to swim in reduced chlorine. I have had nothing but positive feedback from our customers. We couldn’t be more pleased.” So there you have it. For about 100US, 62GBP, 72EUR, 354MYR, 146SGD, 684CNY, 4 845PHP, 1 044 845IDR, or1 779 000 Vietnam Dong, you will NEVER have issues with pool quality and clarity again. Not only that, but did I mention that your skin doesn’t feel like it’s peeling off any more from the overdoses of chemicals, your bathing suit doesn’t turn nicotine yellow, and your eyes don’t feel like they’re burning out of your head?

Is there hope?
The Point of No Marina
Why Koh Samui is losing the battle of the Marina
N
ow maybe it’s just me... But I have to start asking what exactly is happening with the many facilities that Samui has promised me over the past few years that have never seemed to appear? I was so looking forward to being able In here... to take the weekend to spend flying down a monstrous waterslide in the new Water Park. My intuition told me that another airport on the island could be a good decision to promote this island and to get more tourists here to fill the Government plans Big Buddha increased beds that are available. I saw area for a local Marina the advertising, I bought into the ideas that increased facilities would draw tourism, I even went so far as to begin paying attention to what our island needed to be the most favoured tourist location in Thailand. And I felt proud that these new facilities had chosen to take into consideration the global repercussions that they were causing our environment. The plans looked astounding, and I waited with anticipation for the evolution of Samui into a high-class tourist playground. All I see now are houses and hotels, most of which are empty. Despite the fact that the economy seems to have completely tanked and the future of many business entrepreneurs is as bleak as an Icelandic bank account, the island of Koh Samui appears to be building with an increased fervour. Building yes, developing no. The numerous promotions available and the opening of new resorts and extensions of existing facilities show that the meandering economy has spiked a focus in an area where failure is deemed improbable. The ‘Big Boys’ obviously still see a future in Koh Samui, as Park Hyatt and Conrad are continuing to build, and Banyan Tree has quietly made good progress with their development to the north of Lamai, which is due to open later this year. Bhundhari Spa Resort and Villas has opened with 124 more rooms and villas, and Sala Samui in Cheong Mon has entered the scene with a ‘SALA Fly Free’ promotion where complimentary one-way flights are on offer for up to two guests wishing to experience both SALA Phuket and SALA Samui. And the list goes on.
But what has happened to these promising property developments? Where is my water park? And where are the grandiose developments of those who featured Samui Island getaway facilities of a Marina? Yes you remember them, there are a few to speak of who set up sail along the ring-roads of Samui with dynamic banners waving in the winds preparing property buyers to live on the island of their dreams. Their sailboats and super yachts pictured on billboards docked alongside private walkways leading to decadent housing and modern facilities. Have these dreams vanished with the changing of the winds? Was the ambition greater than the possibility? Was I lied to? Or has the fact that some people are just plain dim come to light? Rumours spread, as you can only imagine throughout the island, with the blame being thrown onto the difficulties that are associated with building permits, land rights, Thai partnerships, and corporate responsibilities regarding environmental protection, and so on. I even believe that at one point the change of zoning laws claimed the future of the Royal Samui Marina’s plans of succeeding as the first upon this island of leisure. Or so we’re told... Now let’s get a few facts straight before we really start to turn up the heat on why to this date there are no Marinas resembling the envied hotspots around the world every sailor aims to visit. We went to speak to someone who is an expert on the matter of building a Marina on Samui. The reason being...there is a Marina on Samui... the Petcherat Marina. Now this Marina is not one of the giant property complexes of the Florida Keys or the phenomenal Dubai Marinas, it’s a functioning Marina where you may moor or dock your vessel on Samui. Petcherat Marina is the only private pier on Koh Samui, where their Marina building is a high standard service facility designed to host their guests in modern luxury. Dean Gilboa, co-owner of Petcherat Marina (there are 2 partners in the Marina and the speed boat company affiliated with the Marina, Samui Speedboats, Kuhn Tuernjai Petcherat and Dean) sat us down for a lesson that not only astounded us, but changed our entire outlook on the Marina situation on Samui. “I hate to say this, and if you print it I will deny every word of it, but some people are just plain stupid! People have attempted to create Marinas here on Samui, but are not abiding by the guidelines. Some have even tried to beat the system. You just can’t do that...no matter who you think you can pay off! Now their properties are half-finished, desolate or bankrupt.”
a lack of evolution
this could be samui It is worth remembering that Marinas will benefit the island’s real estate industry because residential projects generally crop up around them. Thailand is becoming increasingly popular with yachting enthusiasts from nearby markets like Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand, but is not yet considered a major yachting holiday destination because of tax, legislation and obstacles in marine related infrastructure. Thailand looks set to become one of the world’s prime yachting holiday destinations if pending issues can be addressed swiftly, and if Thailand can stay ahead of her competing neighbour Malaysia.
34
or this... Scale of potential: For every dollar spent at a Marina, approximately 10$US is generated in the community. A typical owner spends around 10% of the value of their boat on annual upkeep. A single luxury motor yacht costs upwards of US$1 million (that’s 100,000 $US upkeep per year), and a super yacht of approximately US$ 50 million would generate 5 million $US upkeep per year. There are currently 34 superyachts cruising in SEA without adequate facilities available in the region. Could Samui easily capture the lost revenue of these yachts?

Dean pulled out of his desk the latest zoning laws that specifically highlighted where a facility such as a Marina could be built upon the shores of Samui. “It’s right in front of anyone who cares to see! This is not secret information, and not only that, if you have enough sense in your head to research into the government funding that’s available, you’ll see that not only are they willing to allow a Marina to be built, BUT THEY WILL HELP YOU!!!” Dean whipped around his computer after typing in ’www.boi.go.th’, and there it was. The Thailand Board of Investment (BOI), under the heading Eligible Activities section 7.3; Tourism Promotional Services will take you to Section 7.3.1 Ocean Marina Services. Now to make a long story and an intense speech from Mr. Gilboa a little shorter, this section stipulates the following. Samui falls under Zone 3 of BOI, and as such the following privileges apply to Zone 3. 1. Exemption of import duty on machinery. 2. Corporate income tax exemption for 8 years provided that a project with capital investment of 10 million baht or more (excluding cost of land and working capital) obtains ISO 9000 or similar international standard certification within 2 years from its start-up-date, otherwise the corporate income tax exemption will be reduced by 1 year. 3. Exemption of import duty exemption on raw or essential materials used in the manufacturing of export products for 5 years. 4. Deduction from net profit of 25 percent of the project’s infrastructure installation or construction costs in addition to normal depreciation, and such deductions can be made from the net profit of one or several years within 10 years from the date of first revenue derived from the promoted activity. In general terms, if you meet the criteria you are then eligible for the above zone advantages. Dean points out, “As for the BOI, I believe that when relating to a Marina, most people are not aware that this activity is eligible for BOI benefits, and that it’s promoted by the government that really is looking for investors. However, private Marinas are usually built to support a real estate and a commercial centre to make them financially viable; being so, potential investors are seeking large plots of land to develop a Marina and a real estate project. With the prices of beach front land on Samui today and building restrictions, to build a real-estate project and a Marina will require a very, very large parcel of land, and an enormous investment which may not make sense financially.” So have we been lied to? Have the promises of Marinas only been an investor’s pipe-dream? “For the record,” Dean continues, “the rumours that the government does not want a Marina are not true...the government wants a Marina on Samui. The government has also initiated a survey of checking potential sites for Marinas and even designed a few potential sites. However, to build such a government Marina, the government needs to prioritise the funds and budget for such a project, which at this moment seems very unlikely. Due to the current situation, the government is offering private inventors benefits to do it privately. If someone is interested in building a Marina, they can, as long as they follow the building and zone restrictions, and the harbour department requirements. If approved they can even get BOI privileges and benefits.”
So there you have it! Not only are marinas possible on Samui, within the designated areas and as long as you have the proper approval, but the government is seeking investors to aid in such an endeavour. Now what really pushes me to the tilting point is: Where have all the Marinas we were promised gone? Were there people out there who invested in property only to be shanghaied? Why is no-one telling us? Perhaps this will get their attention... And where is my Water Park???

Some of the island’s best cocktails can be found at this popular restaurant & bar, which offers one of the best locations on Samui Island. s Samui’s busy season swings into action, Kamalaya Wellness Sanctuary & Holistic Spa is delighted to welcome internationally renowned healer Isaac Shapiro, who comes to the resort from July 24 to August 1. Isaac offers his trademark workshop, ‘Meetings in Truth,’ as a charity event on July 30th, benefiting The Lotus Flower Foundation. He’ll also be accepting bookings for private healing sessions throughout his stay. As a facilitator for more than 30 years, Isaac is fascinated with living life in alignment with the world’s wisdom traditions. He uses language to explore and assist, asking us how we live and relate moment to moment – how we parent, do business and interact with our environment. By posing questions and making statements, Isaac encourages us to ask ourselves whether what he says is true in our own beings. He points to what is already known, but obscured in the ways our nervous systems and our thinking function. Isaac draws upon a broad spectrum of disciplines and understanding, ranging from neuro-physiology to quantum physics, applying them in light-hearted but direct ways. “All we have is the sensory experience of this moment, NOW. The world, time, space, our own bodies and each other are all an experience to us,” he says. “Through noticing how our cells respond in the experience of now, there is a noticing of the production of not only the sense of reality but also the sense of self that we believe we have.” We all have unconscious habits of attention that are uncomfortable to us and others. They are cognitive filters on our experience of reality, making it almost impossible for us to recognize them. Isaac tracks what is happening in our nervous systems, bringing our attention to these habits in a way that helps us to re-establish our innate self-regulating mechanisms. Isaac’s approach requires us neither to change nor eliminate elements from our lives. It is a non-judgmental inquiry into our present beings, relying upon the agency of awareness. A shift can occur as we see these unconscious habits. We may recognise the true nature of ourselves, experiencing this process as sensations of peace, unconditional love, compassion, or a feeling of being home. Isaac introduces his work at 18.30 on July 24th at Kamalaya’s Alchemy Lounge. ‘Meetings in Truth’ takes place on July 30th from 11.00 –18.00. The workshop fee of THB2,700 includes lunch, with proceeds going to The Lotus Flower Foundation against child abuse in Thailand. Kamalaya welcomes all Samui visitors and residents for Isaac’s visit and to take advantage of the many options on offer in their magnificent setting in tranquil southern Samui. Book yourself a Royal Ayurvedic Massage, a Vital Essence Oil Massage, or one of the Traditional Chinese Medicine therapies. The heart of Kamalaya’s philosophy is a synergy of Eastern and Western treatments, each of which works to restore the body’s natural balance while nourishing your mind and spirit.

Moving a Mummy Over the course of the past year we have run across some very interesting, some very enigmatic, and even some very strange people. We’ve written about everyone from leaders to lady-boys, saviours to solicitors and patriots to pirates. Never, have we ever written about dead people. And never before have they become mummies.
This Shrine is the newly built structure to house the Mummified Monk of the Temple of Wat Kiri Wongkaram.
O
ur opportunity arose when the entrepreneur/restaurateur/ historian/rejuvenator of the Virgin Coast of Taling Ngam, Mr. Colin Burgess, took some documentary photographs of the moving of the Mummified Monk at the Temple of Wat Kiri Wongkaram. Yes, a Mummified Monk.
He was also one of the first Jao Wat’s, which is the Thai term for Abbot, who led the temple into its present existence. Following this, he decided to return to his family home, which was located just behind the current Wat Kunaram, where the temple school is located.
Like most of the Wats on Koh Samui, this temple holds significance to the history of Samui, and as there are no official museums on the island to hold the cache of memories from her past, we thought it best to record this historic event for future generations to review. As we dove into our research into the origins and the miraculous natural preservation of this Monk, we discovered something very interesting. There is in fact actually more than one Mummified Monk on the island of Koh Samui, there are two, as well as another ”not so Mummified Monk.” The “not so Mummified Monk” is ‘Lang Poo Thuad Yeb Num Thale Jued’ or the ‘The Monk who walked on fresh water’. However upon close inspection of the man behind the glass, you will find he’s much too well preserved, and it doesn’t take long to realise that he is a wax figurine. Nonetheless, this is a very interesting way of displaying a well honoured Monk, and is a sharp contrast to the very common glass boxes with a more ‘simple’ statue in it of the revered holy men that you can see at other temples or Wats. Incredibly, the other two monks are preserved naturally. Quite often there is not a lot of information on who these people were, and the tales of their endeavours have not all been written down. We do know a great deal about the first of the two mummified Monks on Samui. His name is Phra Khru Samathakittikhun (Dang Piyasilo) or Loung Por Daeng. He was born in 1894, was a well respected family man within the local community on Koh Samui, and first become ordained as a monk when he was in his early twenties. He
40
spent two years in Wat Samret before exiting and marrying a local woman from Lamai with whom he had six children, a few who are still alive on the island today. Upon reaching fifty years of age, once his children were all grown up, Loung Por Daeng decided to dedicate the latter part of his life to Buddhism, and returned to the temples where he felt so at peace. He was ordained as a monk for the second time in 1944. He travelled to Bangkok where he spent time studying and learning more about Buddhist texts and meditation, one of the great passions of his life. It is believed that upon returning to Koh Samui he went to meditate in the cave of Tham Yai, which is located within the present day Tamarind Springs. Later he moved to Chaweng and was one of the first monks to stay in the location that is known as Wat Pang Bua.
The most famous accounts of his life occurred two months before his death. At the age of 79 years and 8 months, he requested the attendance of his students to inform them that he felt his death was imminent, and wanted to instruct them as to his last wishes. He requested that should his body decompose that he be cremated and his ashes scattered at the famous ‘Saam Jaeg’ in Hua Thanon, meaning ‘the three forked road intersection’ in the Thai language. He went on to request that should his body not decompose, he would like to stay at the temple and be placed in an upright coffin on display, as a symbol to inspire future generations to follow Buddhist teachings and be saved from suffering. In his final seven days of mortal life, he no longer spoke to anyone nor ate or drank anything, concentrating solely on his mediation and the path to enlightenment. He died a week later in the same position that we can see him sitting in today. His body has remained in remarkable condition, despite his passing almost 30 years ago. As far as we know, only a few modifications have been made to him to hide the unsightly natural decay that has occurred. When his eyes sunk into his head, the monks at the temple fitted him with a pair of sunglasses, a strange choice, but one that does the trick. He is however still sitting in the original position of his departing meditation. The Monk that brought us to the creation of this article is from the Virgin Coast of Koh Samui, Baan Taling Ngam. This area was the first seaport for merchant traders over 100 years ago, and the original families of this village can still be found to this day, living in their ancestral homes. Originally named Taling Punk, or Damaged Shore, after a destructive storm in 1900 took the beauty of the shorelines away, it regained

its splendour over time and was renamed Taling Ngam in 1942. Here the sun sets perfectly into the horizon, offering the most stunning and breathtaking views of the 5 Islands, just off of its shores. This Mummified Monk is an interesting artefact at Wat Kiri Wongkaram, although little is known of his life’s work. His name was Luang-Por RermKhun Thummo, an original Samuian born near the temple in 1879. He was 21 years old when ordained, and shortly after made a pilgrimage to Burma where he was initiated into deep mystical Buddhist practices. He returned to Koh Samui and passed away on January 9, 1966 at the age of 87. After 66 years in the monkshood and a life of purity and meditation, his body mummified naturally upon his death without use of chemical preservation. Amazingly his hair and nails still grow after 43 years of passing on into the next life! To this day, sections of the nails are cut and used as protective charms. It is believed that his purity of spirit has held his body in this pristine state for over four decades. At the temple of Wat Kiri Wongkaram many worshippers pay homage to him, and it is here where our story begins and ends. A new section of the temple has been built to house this Mummified Monk, and it was with great celebration that he was placed into his new resting place.

From June 9th until the 13th, X2 Resort was proud to have featured this astounding artist in a venue that soothed the very soul of Samui.
Josee’s latest album Bem Brasiliero for instance, was recorded in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo with the sublime musicians of Nosso Trio [Nelson Faria (guitar), Ney Conceição (bass) and Kiko Freitas (drums)] and participation of the great João Bosco. Nosso Trio also participated in her Dutch album Verdronken Vlinder, a tribute to her late husband and great Dutch lyricist Lennaert Nijgh. With this album Josee succeeded in blending beautiful Dutch lyrics with sensitive Brazilian chords and rythms. The result is a delightful album, that proves that music is universal when it is performed by full-hearted super musicians. Josee Koning’s cooperation with Brazilian musicians started off in 1995 with her first solo-album Tribute to Antonio Carlos Jobim. It was recorded in Los Angeles, and produced and arranged by the famous Brazilian Dori Caymmi who also worked with stars like Sarah Vaughn, Herbie Hancock and Elis Regina. In April 1996 Josee even shared the stage with Dori and his also famous musical family in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. In October 1998 Dori Caymmi came to Holland to record Josee’s second soloalbum entitled Dois Mundos / Two Worlds. In addition he brought his friend, the famous Brazilian singer/composer Ivan Lins to sing some of his famous songs with Josee. The album was successfully released in the Netherlands and Brazil. In 2004 the track Coração Vagabundo was even used for the Brazilian telenovela Seus Olhos. Ivan Lins has been participating in Josee’s musical projects since. He had a leading role in Josee’s third album Recorded in Rio, that was recorded in the famous Discover Studio in Rio de Janeiro. This album was arranged and produced by Uruguayan guitar virtuoso Leonardo Amuedo, and featured drummer Teo Lima and accordion wizard Sivuca. In October 2007 Josee toured the Netherlands with Nosso Trio. In April 2008 she performed with Nosso Trio in Brazil and in July she played with Nosso Trio at a Tribute to 50 years of Bossa Nova in the Netherlands. For this project she also invited the fabulous Swiss cellist Daniel Pezzotti. Josee studied at the Amsterdam Conservatory and gained more in-depth knowledge of the Brazilian music and culture, studying in Rio de Janeiro. She teaches Brazilian music at the conservatories of Amsterdam and Rotterdam. X2 resorts have a very unique and unequivocal persona that is embraced by all elements of the resort. Magnolia Spa Samui had initiated a unique promotion during the Samui Sawadee.com Regatta, in which the participants of the regatta enjoyed a free back neck & shoulder massage, as they came ashore from their ever so tiring sailing day. The response of the sailors, as well as of the locals and tourists passing by, was amazing and they happily joined the relaxing and special treatment. Smiles were all over the place and the Regatta people enjoyed their Margaritas, beer and food at the same time they having their shoulders, back and neck relaxed by the lovely Magnolia Spa’s therapists.

Looking for Teachers Since establishing our first branch in 2001, we have worked hard to create and maintain our friendly, relaxed, but highly effective environment in which to learn Thai. Mind Your Language’s basic teaching philosophy is to spend as much time as possible on speaking and listening to practical Thai conversation. We believe that learning should be both effective and fun, so we keep our groups to a maximum of 6 students to ensure that everyone benefits from a more personal teaching approach, and that the groups progress together. We are currently looking for individuals who are interested in learning the art of teaching Thai to foreigners in both Samui and Phuket. You will be trained at our cost, and contracted to teach Thai within our facilities.

Beware. You will have to deal with a lot of stress in the coming weeks, and besides that, your enemies might try and throw obstacles in your way. Stay away from intrigues and other secret traps!
Try to prevent some possible tense situations this month: this could also mean something else, namely that you can join forces with your partner to carry out something difficult, but important together.
