popular address for the “contemporary” real estate client: the ok properties offices at the ring road in Ban Por OK Properties CEO Norbert Verweyen is just one big bundle of business optimism. The German national (who says he also has Dutch and French blood). Exudes so much passion and unwavering confidence to the potential and prospects of doing business in Koh Samui. This, despite the present realities that the property market is currently in a slump and most of the business competition is now experiencing less and less occupancies and problems with their bank loans. According to the 58-year-old former optometrist and optician turned property business executive. OK Properties has been in the real estate property business on the island for the last 18 years and has remained a stable. Solid and financially sound company despite the global economic recession.

“Real Estate was never a better option

than now”

Norbert Verweyen - OK Properties

Therefore, OK Properties has introduced a rather simple but attractive alternative to the Samui property market. “We have a smaller cake nowadays and business is not like before but our company offsets this predicament by striving to be good and better than others. While some are still in shock with the market situation. Ok Properties go a step further by introducing their answer to the situation in the business. “Verweyen says. “During difficult times you have to prove you’re a good company by adapting to the situation & knowing what the market needs. He adds: “Finance your house with zero interest, downpayment 40%, rest over 3 years, just like buying a car. The best part of it is the fact that the buyer gets two incomes from the investment: from the rental and from the increased value of the property. Thais also buy from us, “Verweyen boasts happily, adding “They cannot buy cheaper property than from us and their response to our promotion has been very good because they can compare easily. So no wonder Europeans and Asians follow suit.

ave you ever wondered how you could cut the costs of taking a vacation to your most desired locations ever? Now take this thought one step further and consider completely eliminating your expenses for lodgings, hotels or resorts. Interested?

Has it ever crossed your mind that you could be a millionaire within 24 hours from this very moment? Or how about the thoughts of suddenly winning a whole bunch of money, all while you are on vacation. Does this ignite some anticipation?

Editor in Chief Glenn R. Wallis

Are you an advocate of peace and global concerns, and are curious as to what peoples of different cultures are thinking about these very same issues? Would you be willing to join in on a day of global hope?

MY TOP 3 IN THIS EDITION wandering tribes-people I recently ran across a tourist who spoke to me about how she made her way to Thailand. I’m always curious about how people can afford to make the long journey and then party more than I can while here. She told me about a very remarkable website called Couch Surfing, and I just had to share my findings with you! Page 8

Have you ever seen the inside of the most luxurious hotels in the world, and are wondering what the benefits are of spending more money in one night on a hotel room than you normally would earn in 6 months to a year? Are you completely mortified by the thoughts of spending another vacation on a beach with thousands of other vacationers, all tightly packed together like sardines in a Thai fisherman’s net, unable to sleep at night because of the incessant partying that is disturbing your peaceful getaway? Would you like to hear our solution? We humans are social beings. We come into the world as the result of others’ actions. We survive here in dependence on others. Whether we like it or not, there is hardly a moment of our lives when we do not benefit from others’ activities. For this reason it is hardly surprising that most of our happiness arises in the context of our relationships with others. Nor is it so remarkable that our greatest joy should come when we are motivated by concern for others. We at C-holiday Magazine share this philosophy in the grand scheme of things, and pass along exorbitant amounts of information to you our readers in various forms. For this month of September we have a curious amount of articles on how to make the best of your vacation. We expose many insider tips and informative articles of the likes that you cannot find in the tourist books and traveller guides prepared by those who are in charge of marketing, or from those who have only visited Thailand, their perspectives clouded by the elegance of decadent resorts and exclusive holiday packages. We are here in the field, and we see things a little differently sometimes than most visitors. We are pleased to offer you this free magazine, with insight into this Kingdom and the wonderful array of destinations and holiday adventures that exist here and yes, even the harsh realities of what you may not have the opportunity to witness. We strive to open the eyes of tourists in a capacity that will allow them to learn from the mistakes of others, as well as from the profoundly awesome experiences that are available within Thailand. If you are reading the Samui C-holiday issue this month, you will find our Tilting Point directly piercing the troubles we see with tourists not thinking about their actions, and putting themselves as well as others in danger. Most publications fear speaking of such issues, but we feel that it is not only important to educate our visitors, but to keep them safe while on our soil, with the hopes that they will return again without disillusioned spirits. If it were not for our concerns that your holiday becomes the most incredible experience you have ever had, we would only write really nice stuff, and our interest in you would only be to coerce as many of you as possible to spend money with our favoured clients. Everything would be grandiose, everyone would be perfect, and Thailand would better than any other country in the world. The facts expose the truths that Thailand is indeed just like every other country in the world in many ways, and while holidaying here, there are things that you need to keep in mind. We care about how fast you go, we contemplate your health, and we are concerned that your visit with us will indeed be measured in smiles per hour. We will delicately warn you of the dangers that often are swept away with a flash of teeth and the proverbial “Mai pen Rai” as you are told not to worry, this is how we do things in Thailand, and that after all... you’re on holiday! But we will also put your concerns to rest by giving you the tools to safely thrive in the holiday madness that consumes us all. We celebrate with you your holiday enthusiasm and with the best of intentions we hope to educate you and entertain you to the best of our abilities, so that you too may pass along your insight to those who inquire about your trip to the most exotic Kingdom in the world. Share the knowledge, benefit from this experience that we give to you and rest assured that there are many people who truly care about you. Enjoy.

Humans for sale We all know what slavery is. We’ve read about it in countless history books, seen it in documentaries and films, and some of us have even had the distasteful experience of witnessing it first-hand. Slavery is awful. Slavery is inhuman. Slavery is dead. But this last point is not true. In fact, slavery is very much alive on every continent. Page 20

The Prescription for Every Pool • The Patented PoolRx is Nature’s own water purifying process. • The most inexpensive and simplest way to create a low chlorine environment. • Eliminates all algae, bacteria and viruses. • These minerals are not dissipated by sunlight or heat. • Reduce Chemicals by up to 70% - saving money and Eco-Friendly. • Create a better swimming environment. • Reduce the irritations associated with chlorine: red stinging eyes, dry itchy skin and faded swimsuits while enjoying crystal clear, soft water. “I rent my villa quite frequently, and renters seem to live in my pool. I used to hear from renters when the pool wasn’t as clean and clear as they would like, but I don’t get those calls anymore. I don’t know what you’re magic formula is, but whatever it is, it works!” Rob Newman, Owner of Villa Samprasada, Bophut, Koh Samui. “Our pool is the jewel of our property, and using PoolRx not only keeps the water clear and sparkling, but we’re saving a lot of money on pool maintenance by having to use much less chlorine and other chemicals.” Andy Tsavos, General Manager, Nikki Beach, Koh Samui. “My pool service tried just about every chemical there is for swimming pools to clear up the green, cloudy water of my home pool. When I put the PoolRx unit in my pool basket my water literally became crystal clear within hours, and has stayed that way! With less chlorine and clean, clear water, my entire family is now happily enjoying the pool again.” Paul Watson, Tropical Murphy’s, Koh Samui. “All I can say is that my pool went from green/brown to crystal blue in 12 hours! I had tried everything before this….large amounts of chemicals, even running the pump for 5 days straight, but nothing worked. PoolRx does everything it claims….the water is crystal clear, I’m using less chlorine, the grout is white again, and the water is much more enjoyable to swim in.” Peter Galpin, Villa Owner, Koh Samui. COUCH Surfing The Wandering Tribes-People of the Earth

“Have you thought about how many couches are left unoccupied in dark living rooms every night?” Christine Tulsky - United States

For many people the joy and thrill of going on a holiday to a foreign land or country is extinguished by the monetary issues of being forced to pay exorbitant prices for accommodations and dining out. Often travellers find themselves limited to the places that they will visit in their lifetime due to budgetary demands, and end up on the beach of the nearest lake or on the ocean of their own city with the thousands of other travellers who are economically in the same boat. The bygone days of backpacking has become a memory and soon will be a historical part of the history of travel and tourism on our planet. Dangers affiliated with travelling in this fashion, camping out wherever you wanted, sleeping on the famous beaches of India, Pattaya or Australia are now in fact illegal in most regions, and the risk of running into wild animals or even wilder people a reality that has made many world travellers put their passports back into their security boxes. In 2004 a new choice of travel took shape and was formed by those who had the desire to explore our planet, but not the finances to overcome the tourist rates for budget motels and hotels that might surprisingly share the same price tag as 5-Star lodgings. The unfortunate rise of the cost to stay in holiday countries had reached a pinnacle, and something had to be done globally. People still had the desire to put a few belongings into a rucksack, forget their deodorant and shampoo at home, and travel off to see what the world had to offer. The exploration of new cultures, rich with history and encompassed by a people that have retained their own culinary delights and style of architecture is something that will never be abated. Adaptation was the key to keeping this form of travel alive. The wandering tribes-people of planet Earth would never settle. Instead they chose to unite. “This is a way to making a better world for everybody... I swear!!!” Kenan Ćatović - Bosnia and Herzegovina CouchSurfing is not necessarily a new idea, as people have always lent a helping hand, and their spare room or couch to friends in need. When the roof to your house collapses under the waste disposal from a passing airline, or your

8

bachelor party goes very wrong and you find yourself without a fiancée and bed for the night, your friends have always thrown a blanket over you wherever you fell, crying yourself asleep. And we have all had a friend or two who just never know where they should live, and go hopping from one friend to another, living in our basements or garages, sometimes for weeks at a spell. These are the founders of what has become a global movement, and to them we are all now eternally grateful for their insight on how to travel. The only problem was meeting new friends in your country of choice. Hence, CouchSurfing was born, and has become an International Non-Profit Network that connects travellers with locals in over 230 countries and territories around the world. Since 2004, members have been using this unique system to come together for cultural exchange, friendship, and learning experiences. Today, over a million people who might otherwise never meet are able to share hospitality and cultural understanding. “In a world of war and prejudice, CouchSurfing encourages tolerance and understanding. In a world of greed and avarice, CouchSurfing stands for sharing. In a world of selfishness and individualism, CouchSurfing advocates generosity.”Abilio M Godoy - Brazil The mission of CouchSurfing is to create inspiring experiences and ultimately crosscultural encounters that are fun, engaging, and illuminating. These experiences take many forms. CouchSurfing’s initial focus was on hosting and ‘surfing’ (staying with a local as a guest in their home), however with the growth and strength of the acceptance of the global travellers alongside these core experiences, the CouchSurfing Network now also facilitate a growing array of activities and events. “We have a vision of a world where everyone can explore and create meaningful connections with the people and places they encounter. Each CouchSurfing experience shared by our members brings us closer to that vision.” www.couchsurfing.org CouchSurfing members simply share hospitality with one another. These exchanges are a uniquely rich form of cultural interaction. Hosts

have the opportunity to meet people from all over the world without leaving home. ‘Surfers,’ or travellers, are able to participate in the local life of the places they visit. This also gives more people the chance to become travellers, because ‘surfing’ lowers the financial cost of exploration. As the CouchSurfing community continues to expand its horizons, members are always finding more ways to connect and learn about each other. Every day, people around the world share coffee, camping trips, meetings, language exchanges, discussions and of course their couches. The Internet was the medium that brought to life the vision of exploring new worlds and new civilizations, and to boldly go where you could not travel before. A network where people from different walks of life can come together was established, and the response to the idea was phenomenal to say the least. The CouchSurfing Organisation now boasts a diverse community of over 1 million members. CouchSurfers come from 62,000 different cities and speak 1,270 unique languages. Since 2004; 1.25 million successful CouchSurfing stays have been recorded. 1.5 million new friendships have been formed through CS, and nearly 90,000 of those are described as being close friendships. Members have reported 3.2 million positive experiences, which is an incredible 99.6 percent of all CS experiences combined. “If Mahatma Gandhi were still alive, he would be a CouchSurfer.” Ruben Stegbauer - Germany At CouchSurfing International, members and coordinators envision a world where everyone can explore and create meaningful connections with the people and places they encounter. Building meaningful connections across cultures enables them to respond to diversity with curiosity, appreciation and respect. This appreciation of diversity perpetuates dignity of the human race and spreads tolerance, ultimately creating a global community. “It is impossible to quantify how great it is to be in the home of a person of another culture. To learn how they live and share in their daily lives and become their friends. Also to help us to learn the language they speak. It is almost impossible to become fluent in a language when you are only learning to ask ‘where is the bus going to?’ or ‘do you have a room?’ and ‘how much is that?’ It is also difficult when you stay

in hotels or similar places. There are not many chances to have full conversations in the host language. If there are lots of travellers about chances are you will all be speaking English (or some form of). Yes, for us CouchSurfing has been, and we hope will continue to be INCREDIBLE!!!” Nomad Kiwis - New Zealand If enough of us have these kinds of experiences, we may begin to see a world where people feel a greater sense of connection with each other, in spite of differences. These connections help us appreciate diversity and build a global community that is inspired to seek harmony when conflicts inevitably arise. “This is not just good use of the internet. This is not just good use of a couch. Essentially what we have here is humanity working at its finest. People helping people, with no strings attached. I’ve only hosted a handful of times, but each time changed my life for the better... CouchSurfing makes me believe that humans are essentially pure, good, and curious to know more about each other.” Paula Bialski – Poland The hospitality problems that travellers may have encountered in the past have now themselves become obsolete. Millions are picking out their backpacks from storage, dusting off their passports and surfing the Internet for a couch in a strange land to sleep on. The solution was quite simple, make a friend in a foreign country. Now the opportunity to travel the world safely has opened doors that were unknown only a few years ago. Go to www.couchsurfing.org and begin your own journey. “To say that something has ‘changed your life’ is such a cliché. Every decision we make, every action we take - be it choosing to catch the bus or cycle to work, to shop at the supermarket or at the corner shop, changes your life. There are some events however that transforms your world in more shades than you can fathom. That moment for me happened five months ago when I clicked the ‘Join’ button on Couchsurfing.org. I have since seen this community expand threefold, and I try to imagine how different the lives of those other members must have become, but that answer is just impossible to register. I may have passed borders and I may have boarded flights, but I view the last five months as one continual journey. An expedition which has brought me into the homes and hearts of people I can’t imagine ever not knowing. From riding on Vespas to eating pizza at a political fundraiser en route to a folk festival atop a mountain in Florence, to walking the streets of Philadelphia like old friends. From being reunited with a mate from 10 years prior through a simple ‘couchsearch,’ to exchanging emails with another member feeling like the conversation has flowed for years. Every time is different, each surfing quest holds its own identity, and above all I admire its ability to bring together such a vibrant collection of differing nationalities, cultures and situations, both across the world and from down the road. In an age where we are taught to lock the door, to avoid eye contact and to install caller ID on our phones, the lesson being learnt is to bring back the trust. This is exactly what Couchsurfing is doing, and transforming my world in the process. Arohanui e hoa CS!” Angela i Gerard - Spain

The Green Island

Challenge This Just Could Be The Most Important Race You Ever Enter.

Individuality Counts But Team Work Dynamites. On Saturday, September 19th there will be an estimated 150 teams gathered from around the world assembled at the starting line of the Ibis Koh Samui Trophy Race, and without a doubt, the adrenaline that will surge with the firing of the starter pistol will thrust the island of Koh Samui into the limelight as the greatest race location in the history of the Amazing Thailand Adventure Race Series.

COMING TOGETHER, SHARING TOGETHER, WORKING TOGETHER, AND SUCCEEDING TOGETHER. The planning of this event trails back months to the announcement by the Ibis hotel of hosting this race in the south of Thailand. Event supporters and sponsors seeking a destination that would captivate not only those who are professional in the sport of Adventure Racing, but to include

10

www.c-publishing.com

the growing number of amateurs willing to participate for the purpose of this competition, have found that Samui will not only provide a challenging terrain for participants, but also the most spectacular scenery to date. Active Management Asia (AMA) is a professional sport event’s organizer specialized in athletic races such as runs, triathlons, bicycle and Adventure Races, bringing The Amazing Thailand Adventure Race Series to the southern shores of Thailand for the first time.

Teamwork doesn’t tolerate the inconvenience of distance. Adventure Racing is a new sport that has exploded in popularity across Asia and AMA is leading that growth in Thailand with its highly popular Amazing Thailand Adventure Race Series, supported by the Tourism Authority of Thailand. Now in its 4th year of operation, AMA has established an International reputation for its professionally organized events, solid logistics

and challenging courses. Providing exciting school camp programmes and also leading the Asian continent in the field of corporate training and teambuilding, specialized in experiential learning, they have planned the secret course on Koh Samui with the abilities of every participant in mind. These non-stop races, ranging in length from 4-8 hours, require teams to run, trek, mountain bike and paddle, while navigating a course through the wilderness. Likened to an expedition with a stopwatch, adventure racing requires teamwork, perseverance, strategy and determination.

Teams share the burden and divide the grief. Supported by Ibis, The Tourism Authority of Thailand, the Tourism Association of Koh Samui and the Thai Hotel Association of Koh Samui, this inaugural Adventure will start and finish from the magnificent Bophut Beach in front of the Ibis hotel in Bophut.

Rapidly capturing the imagination of sport people in Thailand and from around the world, Adventure Racing is a highly visual and dynamic sport genre, stretching competitors to their limits. “After the tremendous success of the other races of the Series in Kanchanaburi, Nong Chok and Chiang Mai, it was important to have a competition in the South” explains Serge Henkens, the Race Director and Managing Director of Active Management Asia. Twenty per cent of the sponsor’s donations will go to environmentally friendly initiatives brought by The Green Island Project, a local green association on Samui. “Despite 10 years of unbelievable development, we wanted to show that the Island has a lot to offer and is still a paradise destination” continues Henkens. “Well-known for its magnificent beaches, Samui also offers fantastic opportunities for adventure and great outdoor lovers. The Island has all the ingredients for a memorable race: the blue ocean, forests, mountains, waterfalls, sandy beaches and a very rich fauna and flora. This is the perfect recipe for great Adventure Racing.” The Koh Samui Trophy will offer 4 disciplines: Running, Cycling, Kayaking and Swimming. The competitors will hike and run through unspoiled jungle, paddle and swim on the turquoise waters

of the gulf of Thailand and cycle over the hills with spectacular views of the ocean. “As we offer 2 divisions, Adventure (easier course) and Extreme (a longer course), the race is really accessible to everyone!” concludes Henkens. The winners of the extreme division are expected to complete the course in approximately 4 hours and 30 minutes, with the fastest team in the Adventure division planned to finish around the 3 and one-half hour mark.

Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence wins championships. The competing teams will be comprised of 2 racers and slotted into ago categories of: Men, Women, Mixed, Masters Men (over 80 years combined) and Seniors Men (over 100 years combined). As AMA strives to promote the sports for youngsters in Thailand, they have decided to offer a mini race for children in parallel to the estive and friendly atmosphere throughout the day. The Koh Samui Trophy 2009 consists of 3 days of activities including: * An Expo for Sponsors to promote their products/services * Parties and VIP hospitality

* A spectacular Sprint Adventure Race * A 10k Fun-Run through coconut plantations and the Bophut Village * A Kid’s Mini Adventure Race on the beach * Trophy Presentations * Children corner and games

Win together, lose together, play together, stay together. This could indeed be the greatest race that you will ever enter. The Island of Koh Samui waits in anticipation for the teams to assemble on their marks. Be there to support, participate and join in the fun on race day. Remember that working together as a team we will make Koh Samui a greener island to live upon!

Chonthira Saiwaew

Striking it Rich Thai Style

“If you really want something in this life you have to work for it. Now be quiet, they’re about to announce the lottery numbers.” Dan Castellaneta – Homer Simpson

If you search in Google for the phrase “be a millionaire in 24 hrs” these suggestions will pop up. • Sell Drugs • Rob a Bank • Gamble • Marry a Billionaire • Wait until your Rich Parents die and they give all their money to you.

• Win a Lottery…

Chonthira Saiwaew Special Guest Writer

Wait a minute! Do we only need to be LUCKY to win a Lotto, or are there just a few small things happening in the spirit world that could help us out and that we might need to know? In the economic crisis of today, it’s not so bad to talk to about becoming a millionaire in 24 hours is it? One can always at least carry the hope that it could one day happen. And you know what they say, “Never try…Never Know.” First thing’s first however, you will have to buy a Lottery ticket. So what is your popular number for the Lotto? Is it the date of your birthday, number of your car’s license plate, a house number or mobile phone number …? Let me tell you where Thai people like me look to find a lucky number. THE NEWSPAPER: This source should be current, one day before Lotto day. There is always at least one newspaper that offers suggestions about the Lotto, and many that print success stories for those of us who are

12

www.c-publishing.com

looking for a glimmer of hope in winning. The Thai Rat Newspaper for example published the news of one family in Northern Thailand that found 3 strange fish in the river and they took them home. The local people there believed that these alien fish were a sign of good luck for their Lotto playing. So what numbers did they deduce were the best choice? The word for Fish in the Thai language has the same Thai consonant as the number 8. So their lucky numbers are 38 or 83. Quite interesting, but they didn’t mention if they won or not… LOTTO MAGAZINES: Now maybe this is not something new for you, but I found them to be quite amazing when I started to read them. One section I found was written by the Professional Statistics Board of the Thai Lotto. They show you the successful results history and a bit of a method to calculate a lucky number, but of course they don’t tell you whole story. You must transfer some money into their account before the lucky number is delivered to you by post.

Here’s something to think about: How come you never see a headline like ‘Psychic Wins Lottery’? You always hear stories of other people winning the Lottery, but the story that I’m going to tell you now happened to my family and it’s 100% real from 20 years ago. Here we go…. A close friend of my father was dying from cancer. His name is Uncle Pan, and he and my father had 2 of the same passions… Herb Trees and the Lotto. At 6.30am everyday you could find them sitting together in the local coffee shop, drinking either coffee or tea and chatting about politics, sacred amulets and the Lotto. After the funeral ceremony my father made a blessing to his life-long friend, and tried to send a message to my Uncle Pan. He took one incense stick and began his prayer …. “Pan… If you can hear me... Please tell me which number will show in the Lotto next time. I have very difficult life now, making money is useless... you know my children very well, they

are so young and need good educations for their future,” and bla bla bla. He then went to bed and dreamed. Uncle Pan was dressed up in white in this dream and seemed happy. He told my father that he heard his prayers and was more than pleased to help my father before he was gone forever. “Your lucky number is……….” My father woke up in the middle of the night, excited by his friend’s news from beyond this life. In the morning he went to the coffee shop as usual and he told his dream to all of his friends. The Lotto day came and the result was YES! It was a LUCKY number! Most of my father friends and our neighbours won 3 digits. My father invested 500thb and won an incredible 200,000thb. (By the way, my father played the underground Lotto and it is not under law.) This episode made my father a famous person and the talk of the town for a few months. Many people came to our house to give us gifts, thanking my father for the lucky number, and of course inquiring what the next LUCKY number would be. My father told us that many people visited Uncle Pan’s house in the very late of night or early morning to pray to Uncle Pan like my father did, but nothing ever happened. I was 10 at that time, and I still remember the day I went to put the winning money in the bank with my father. I got new dresses and toys. I was so happy. Between my father and me, we had made an agreement. Whoever died first would come back and tell the other the lucky number to the next Lottery. I’ve been waiting for him for 8 years already and he has yet to show. I think he’s enjoying heaven too much right now and knows that I can fight with the world to earn enough money. That’s all right, but Father don’t you know that I still need money for world travel. If you hear me now, and I don’t mean to disturb you, but how about just one number? I promise you, after that you can go back to your coffee shop in the sky! CONVINCING A GHOST TO PLAY THE LOTTERY Thailand has an incredible story about a ghost that many people ask for blessings, safety for their families and lucky numbers for the Lottery. Let me tell you what I know about this story.

It happened about one hundred years ago and some people say that this is a true story.

make sure that she was gone forever and could never come back.

Nak was a beautiful young Thai lady. She married a man named Mak and they loved each other more than words can tell. One day Mak was requested to join the army for a period of one year, at the time Nak was 2 months pregnant. Mak left the family with sadness, but his duty to serve the King and his country called, and the show must go on.

Today the Nak Ghost House in Bangkok at Pra Ka Nong Temple is visited by hundreds of people every day. Thai people ask her for blessings of love and of course LOTTO LUCKY numbers as well… (I really don’t know when the people started to request lucky numbers, but it has become a popular appeal.) There are several ways to get the lucky numbers from Nak. One of the popular techniques is to use powder, (like baby power) put it in a tree, and within a few minutes the lucky number will show up. If the magic powder does not work, you must change to another technique. There are professionals on the temple grounds who will help you find your lucky numbers, and who are very versed in the ancient techniques of speaking to the spirits.

7 months later, on the night Nak gave birth, both she and her son died. Now Mak knew nothing about the sad story of his wife, and he came back from the army full of love and looking forward to seeing his wife with his newly born child. Yes, they are there… they are waiting for him. Nak is still a beautiful young lady as always. Her face is sweet and her long hair smells so nice, Mak kisses her and holds her tight looking into the face of his son… he’s lovely and has Mak’s eyes…. After missing home for such a long time Mak does not leave his family. He fixes the house, plants the vegetables and enjoys life with his family. Friends and relatives want to visit him to tell him about the sad story of his wife’s death and of the son he would never see, but they can’t come close to the house. NAK has cast magic on the loving Mak. No one was able to come into her home and take her husband away from her, even though she had passed on! The Mother of Mak offered big money to anybody who could take her son away from Nak and destroy her soul. The name of Ghost Nak became famous and frightening, and many ghost fighters from everywhere came to fight with Nak. None could defeat her. Finally a monk came to speak to Nak, and she agreed that the decision should be left up to her husband. Mak was overwrought with grief, not understanding how a human and a ghost could live in harmony. He chose to leave her, but spoke his final words to her in secret, telling her that in the next life he would return to her as her husband once again. One year later Mak took her body and burned her. He then took her ashes, put them in a pot, wrapped it up very strong and sunk them in the river, just to

I can confirm that Nak has given luck to many people, as you can see the number of people who return to Nak after the Lotto day. They donate money to the temple; give toys for her son, cosmetics and dresses to keep her beautiful and even TVs to entertain the spirits. Whether you believe or not, it’s all up to you. But if you do go to visit the temple and ask for blessings from Nak, be prepared, because the nights before Lotto day visitors swarm the temple grounds. Not to worry though, the temple remains open overnight to welcome the next millionaire. So what do you think? What about the next Lotto day, what number will you pick? 34 is my favorite number. Don’t forget that one...You never know! FACT: You can be a millionaire twice a month on every 1st and 16th. The Government Lotto costs 80thb with retail prices in the market around 100-120thb. You can buy tickets everywhere. Vendors are on the beaches, on the streets and in the markets, and also in front of banks and gasoline stations. The 1st prize has a value of 4 million, and if you win in the super lucky draw you might get up to 40 million. Need more information? You don’t need to visit any website, just ask your best Thai friends. Wish you all lucky!

The Sultans Way… Immodestly Opulent

LUXURY IS THEIR ART SULTANS OF THE SEAS

While searching for your dream vacation there will be many stages that you will undoubtedly experience. There is the primary stage of exhilaration as you surf the web in search of a picturesque location to spend your wellearned time, the web-shots of perfect oceans and unbelievably clear skies energizing your endorphins to the point of almost orgasmic delight. You even take the time to save a picture and place it on your computer as your screen saver, basking it its artificial warmth, and envisioning the gleam of tranquillity as the sun sets into your monitor.

Next you discover your choice has been swarmed by invaders, over-booked in fact, sentient of your dreams and somehow arriving before you have even departed from your home country, lined up side by side on your oasis of broken sea-shells and white or pink sand beaches, children casting sand onto bodies as they scurry away from their beckoning patrons. Onwards you persevere, hope still dangling in the fading light of your winter sun that an unheard of or less travelled to latitude besides that of Antarctica will arise. Crushed by defeat, you at last come to the realization that a vacation at home might not only be more peaceful, but also more comfortable with the personal amenities you have collected in creating your own paradise. This is when exasperation sets in, you delete the broken dream from your desktop, and you take the dog out for a walk, not forgetting to put his sweater on to protect him from the cold you both despise. Sleeping Between The Sheets Of

Decadence

Most of us have simple demands when it comes to travel lodging – a bed, a bathroom, a tv and wi-fi. There are others however, whose demands far eclipse the simple convenience of your basic hotel room. When the world’s most wealthy travellers take a vacation for their own they are treated to suites that cover entire floors of a hotel building, rooms that include a personal butler, and if you can believe this one... Some even come with their own private helicopter. Here’s a peek into the experience of the world’s most wealthy travellers. $26,000 a night

THE 8th WONDER OF THE WORLD - ATLANTIS HOTEL DUBAI

The Heartbreaking Commodity

HUMANS FOR SALE The Greatest Human Rights Challenge of our Generation

We all know what slavery is.

Believe it or not, there are more slaves in the world today than ever before, although they represent a much smaller portion of the world’s population than recalled in our civilization’s history. The reality of it all is that human slavery has never gone away, we got rid of legal slavery and the ownership of human beings, but today’s slavery is far worse and much wider spread. Human value is very little, and you can buy a child over the Internet or off the side of a street for almost nothing at all. Many of us labour under the comforting myth that slavery is forever a thing of the past, but is the world being hoodwinked by a global lie? The International Labour Organization estimates that there are a minimum of 12.3 million slaves in the world today. These include women and children trafficked across the world for forced labour and sexual exploitation, as well as children forced into domestic servitude and bonded labourers enslaved in the brick kilns of South Asia. For these people slavery represents the brutal devastation of life and ultimately of hope. Today slavery is illegal everywhere. Yet as the estimated figures of those still in bondage show, it is far from eradicated. History shows

20

www.c-publishing.com

us that slavery is one of the most insidious and adaptable of human institutions. Yet, like all human institutions it can be changed by human action. Sophisticated responses are required to assault the complex of problems that generate and sustain slavery. The majority of those who struggle against slavery in the world today are not government officials and evangelicals, but are in fact slaves and former slaves. Many children in Asia are kidnapped or otherwise trapped in servitude, where they work in factories and workshops for no pay and receive constant beatings. This is a common scenario for those who find themselves in servitude to masters of slavery. Typically, an agent from the city arrives in the village. He shows great sympathy for the child’s parents and a deep understanding of their plight and financial problems. He purchases two dresses for the mother and buys a cow for the father (but the cow is an old sick cow which dies after a few months). In due course, the family’s new friend tells them that he could get a job for the child in the city where the child would be

properly trained, receive wages and have good prospects for promotion. The parents, seeing this as the opportunity of a lifetime for their child to escape from rural poverty, agree. The agent gives them a piece of paper with the name and address of a non-existent employment agency. In reality, it is all a scam. The children live in a den or a squalid shed, with no prospects and no pay. Many are beaten with sticks and iron rods and not even allowed to see their parents. They are branded with red hot irons, burnt with cigarettes, starved, whipped, beaten while hanging upside down, chained up, abused in an intimate way, and kept locked in cupboards for days on end. One child, Shankar, described his experience thus: “We were poked with burning cigarettes on our backs and legs. If we cried for our mothers we were locked in a room without air or enough light. We were forced to work for 20 hours a day without pay. We were kept half fed and beaten up severely by our masters if we were found talking or laughing among ourselves. One night I jumped into the nearby River Ganges to kill myself to escape from this painful life.

We were never allowed to go back to our parents, to our villages.” Most sweatshops have windows and doors barred to prevent escape. The factory, or sex den, is guarded by thugs armed with cudgels and, occasionally, with guard dogs. The child’s parents hear nothing more from the child. If a parent gets suspicious, he or she may go to the address of the agency, only to find that it does not exist. If the child’s parent finally track down the factory or den where the child lives and works, the master tells them: “I paid for his food and medicine”, and claims that the child cannot leave until the enormous fictitious ‘debts’, which he incurred in keeping the child are repaid. When, eventually, the police arrive, they throw the parent out. These children are the face of slavery today. “I was beaten for even scratching my skin and my father was beaten when he came to see me. Ever since I started working, I haven’t been given either a wage or a single day off.” “Two of my friends were killed. They were wrapped in jute bags, which were tied to heavy stones and thrown in the river.” Information obtained from the Anti-Slavery Society.

The most common form of slavery in Europe affects migrant workers, including people who have travelled perfectly legally to other countries in search of work. Finding themselves socially isolated in their countries of destination, they have few places to turn to for help and have often incurred debts on their travels, which are used to bond them. They are forced to pay these off often at exorbitant interest rates, using only their frequently undervalued labour. Traffickers often confiscate the passports of their victims in order to increase their control over them, and through the governments’ action of tying work permits for migrants to jobs means that the governments implicitly legalise a potentially powerful means for unscrupulous employers to, at a minimum, exploit and, at a maximum, force labour. And then there are those who suffer unmentionable crimes. Sold by her parents when she was fourteen, Siri finds herself enslaved in a Bangkok brothel. On a normal day she rises at noon, eats a simple meal, and sits in the brothel waiting for potential afternoon clients. She must stay in the brothel or face beatings if caught leaving. By five o’clock, she is dressed for a night of forced sex - serving as many as twenty men in one night. Hours later, when all the men have left, she steps into her small bed, aching from the abuse. Fearing AIDS, she prays to Buddha that he will prevent the disease from taking her. If she becomes ill,

the brothel owner will simply discard her - for there are thousands more who can replace her. Approximately 35,000 individuals live as sex slaves in Thailand today. Sold or lured to big cities, these girls (and sometimes boys) are forced - under the threat of violence and with no freedom to leave the brothel - to provide sex for any and all paying customers. Sex tourism in Thailand is a growing industry, perpetuating the demand for sex slaves. www.iabolish.org Consider this: if non-unionised legal migrant workers raise concerns over pay or conditions they could face not only the threat of being fired but the threat of deportation. Paradoxically, for many trafficked people the threat of deportation is more frightening than the prospect of labouring on in appalling conditions, in the forlorn hope of a better future eventually arising. Anti-Slavery International argues that there are four strands of human action that are required to eradicate contemporary slavery. The first is labour organisation: where workers are organised, the possibility of forced labour is exponentially reduced. Significant parts of the International Trade Union Movement are already grappling with these issues. For example in South Asia, elements of the labour movement are at the forefront of the struggle against slavery.

The second strand is business engagement; where businesses executives proactively seek to identify areas of risk for forced labour in their supply chain and seek to address these problems. This strand is currently embryonic; however the business and civil society organisations involved in the Ethical Trading Initiative have been particularly important in initiating perpetuating action. The third strand is social development. Slavery tends to emerge at the junction of vulnerability and prejudice. For example, the people from minority tribes and scheduled castes are enslaved in South Asia. Generally, but not exclusively, vulnerability arises as a result of material poverty. Therefore giving priority to reducing the poverty of those enslaved, or most likely to be enslaved, would be a crucial advance towards slavery eradication. Finally there is a need for increased government action, par ticularly in investigation and

prosecution of trafficking, protection for the victims of trafficking, establishment of sufficient means of safe migration for poor people in the globalising economy, and the holding of one another to account Internationally. International Labour Organisation’s Global Report on Forced Labour (2005) pointed out that 12.3 million people worldwide were in some form of forced labour or bondage. Out of this, 9.4 million were found in Asia. www.southasia.oneworld.net When Ying Chen was 16 and living in her village in Burma, a neighbour suggested taking her to Thailand to find domestic work. Not only would she earn money, but her family would receive a hefty fee as well. All agreed, and Ying travelled with the neighbour across the border. The neighbour dropped her off at the home of a Thai national, where, she was told, she would stay for the night. Instead, she and three other girls were forced to have sex with a series of men over the next three days. Then shipped off to Bangkok, she found herself in a massage parlour with thirty other girls. After one girl refused to have sex with a patron - and was raped, beaten, and confined to dark room without food or water for three days - Ying did not argue. All earnings from her prostitution went directly to the manager. A raid

on the parlour in 1998 landed Ying in jail. Her movements afterward are unknown. www.iabolish.org “In 1787 Thomas Clarkson and his colleagues set themselves the task of abolishing the slave trade, something that was, arguably, as fundamental to the economy of the Western world then as oil is today. Within a mere 20 years they had achieved their goal, and not only that, but they had helped establish a human rights paradigm upon which all subsequent struggles for justice and anti-poverty have been built. It is unacceptable that today we do not show the same audacity of ambition in trying to end the struggle that they began. The truth that they knew still pertains, ‘When we act together, we can overcome.’” Aidan McQuade Director, Anti-Slavery International

THE SAMUI GLOBAL MALA Festival 2009

It’s too late to be negative, far too late. With only 96 months left before the planet spins into self-destruction, we must understand that we are all part of the solution. That’s the spirit of this year’s Samui Mala - let’s do what is possible instead of hiding behind our pessimism, our conspiracy theories or our despair. Let this festival be an expression of hope and optimism - a multi-day, multi-venue event just like a chain of Mala Beads linking us together in our vision for a green and clean Samui. Julz Of The Samui Global Mala

island, and the relationship between personal and environmental health. The day will also include a taste of healthy foods and drinks from Kamalaya’s award winning kitchen. Uplifting and enjoyable entertainment will be another attraction of the day. The original Global Mala of 2007 was an event intended to elevate consciousness and raise funds for environmental issues on Samui, with the initial inspiration of a worldwide yoga event that celebrated peace and healing. Today this event has grown into an experience that is hailed as one of the most important community collaborations on Koh Samui, encompassing green initiatives and global healing projects incorporated into a sequence of educational entertainment. “Our aim is to raise awareness of sustainable, healthy living on Samui, create networks of individuals interested in environmental issues and to raise funds to support educational and charitable causes.” Samui Mala Festival 2009 will take place over several days, hosted at different venues on the island. Each activity will be designated as a Festival Theme Day Event - all under the Samui Mala umbrella, culminating in a final festival celebration. The themes are inspired by successful elements of previous years’ event and relate to healthy living on Samui – not only for personal health, but also for the health of the island and the planet.

The Samui global Mala Festival Events Itinerary

From the 19th until the 27th of September, Samui will celebrate all things green and healthy with a week of events collectively called Samui Mala Festival. The week-long festival will take place at various venues around the island. Remember that everything is a gift! Please understand that while some venues and events can provide facilities free of charge, others will charge for entry or food and drink to cover basic costs depending on circumstances, or to raise funds for education or future activities. Some aspects of the program will change. Please check the website as the time approaches. The exact structure of the Samui Mala Festival is not final. New ideas are coming up that may also be included. Success depends on proactive

Samui’s towns and beaches

K

oh Samui is the 3rd largest island in Thailand, located within the calm waters of the Gulf of Thailand. This beautiful tropical paradise has been charming its visitors ever since the first tourists arrived in 1971. Originally established as a coconut plantation, the body of the island has been basically divided into beaches, with each one maintaining its own special atmosphere and attraction. Its hinterland consists of forested hills of limestone and granite, and the shoreline is made up of countless palm-fringed beaches and bays. Those who experience Samui are rewarded with an idyllic tropical retreat featuring white-sand beaches, a sapphire-blue sea, an abundance of tantalising Thai cuisine, and an extraordinarily warm and friendly native people. Koh Samui is 21 kilometres at its widest point and 25 at its longest, taking only about an hour to drive around. There is one major road, which circumvents the island, the ‘Ring Road’, while smaller roads track off to various areas of attraction and accommodation. There is something for everyone on Samui. Sophisticated retail outlets and a buzzing nightlife give way, for those with a sense of adventure, to the dramatic scenery and remote natural retreats still found within the interior. Rice paddies, jungle mountainsides, and the never-ending coconut plantations remain to this day, the beauty of Koh Samui.

qUICK gUIDE

Samui’s tOWNS AND bEACHES The island of Koh Samui has been a hidden treasure for paradise seekers over the past 40 years. Today the beaches remain to be the passion of the island, with resorts and hide-away bungalows spilling out and onto the white sands. Each beach on Samui has maintained its own personality, relating to the area that it lies within. Featured here are some of the highlights of each of these areas for the holiday traveller to enjoy. Chaweng

Chaweng is the longest and most popular beach on Samui. It is also the largest tourist centre with more than 1.5 million travellers visiting annually. 5 Star luxury resorts share the space with more economical accommodation choices, along with a 5 kilometre street of stalls and shops that sell everything Thailand is famous for. Prices are a little higher here than in other areas of the island, but the range of choices in food, accommodation and entertainment is impressive, making this beach and its surroundings, the center of activity for many visitors.

Lamai

Lamai has often been referred to as Samui’s second beach, but there are many who believe it has a greater beauty than that of Chaweng. The waters are excellent for swimming and the beaches and streets are less crowded. The southern end of the bay features elegant granite boulders while the beach itself seems endless. The nightlife in Lamai hosts some excellent restaurants and bars scattered along its strip. The surrounding area notably hosts some of the islands best spas and health resorts available. If you wander off the beaten track here, you might get a glimpse of some true Thai culture.

Big Buddha Beach

If your stay is brief, Big Buddha Beach area offers convenience due to its close proximity to the airport, as well as to boats chartered for Koh Phangan and Koh Tao. Prices for accommodation and provisions remain reasonable, and there are a growing number of fine dining options to compliment the local Thai restaurants and beach bungalow cuisine. Facilities and services are abundant along the main road, making this one of the best locations for a vibrant night-life.The Big Buddha itself can be seen overlooking the entire area and remains to be the focal attraction.

Mae Nam

The beach is a huge horseshoe of soft sand that offers a spectacular view of the neighbouring island of Koh Pangan. There are a number of good local restaurants and businesses along the beach, as well as located on the main ring road. Mae Nam is home to many of the island’s residential developments with a growing quantity of long-term visitors and expats, giving the area a strong sense of community. The hills behind Mae Nam provide the location for the island’s spectacular world-class golf resort.

Bophut

Bophut stands out as the only village on Samui that exudes authentic island charm. It consists of a single street lined with traditional shop-houses, many of which have been converted into restaurants, sales shops and guesthouses. The distinct designs of the beachside dining sector, as well as the chosen cuisine that is available, have created an exceptional Mediterranean atmosphere. Bophut is expanding constantly, generating new wining and dining options every year. Despite its growth, the essential seaside appeal remains, making it one of the island’s most attractive locations.

Lipa Noi and Taling Ngam

The unspoiled South-West Coast of Taling Ngam & Lipa Noi has seen the least change of any area on the island. The romantic coastline here overlooks the spectacular Five Islands and Anthong Marine Park. Several excellent beachside seafood restaurants, bungalows and resorts can be found scattered along the coast offering the most idyllic locations to watch the sun setting into the sea. Palms come right down to the water’s edge, dense greenery right up to the sands, with swimming an idyllic experience. Out to sea are the mountains of the mainland, distant and hazy, fading to purple as evening comes.

September at Kamalaya... “feel life´s potential”

Hua Thanon

The Muslim fishing village of Hua Thanon offers a handful of seafood restaurants, but its main attraction lies in the ancient cultures of the local fishermen. Intricately painted wooden boats are used to this day to catch and deliver fish directly to the local markets. Take a stroll through its market and capture a glimpse into the lives of one of the island’s original communities. Beyond Hua Thanon, the southern coast offers some of the most unspoiled natural scenery on Samui. You will find quaint local villages and coconut plantations that have endured the test of time.

Nathon

Until Sep 5 Jannine connects with your God Presence to understand what you need to work on next to move forward, helping to release and resolve issues that prevent you from recognizing your true potential. Until Sep 11 Paola “Preeti” Grabaccio uses stones, crystals, music, and the energy of her hands to unlock and clear past physical, mental and emotional traumas. Sep 4

This is the island’s main administrative centre. All government offices, banks, as well as the main ferry pier are located in Nathon, making it the most important place for communication with the Thai mainland. Nathon also boasts a number of original teak shop-houses, lining the quiet middle roads, showing the more traditional, Chinese influenced Samui life. Any major local events, ceremonies or celebrations are held in the car park in front of the main pier in Nathon. Visitors tend to pass through this beautiful village on their way to either Chaweng or Lamai, missing some of the least expensive shopping on the island. A nightly food market establishes itself here regularly, giving visitors their first taste of the delights available on Samui.

CHOENG MON

Choeng Mon is made up of a series of bays, speckled with white sandy beaches upon its coastline. Despite its close proximity to Chaweng, about 15 minutes north and 5 minutes from Big Buddha, the beaches have remained quiet and the waters clean. Choeng Mon’s wide sandy beaches feature a rock formation on one side, and the island of Koh Som that you can easily paddle out to on the other. This is a very family friendly area, with exclusive resorts abundantly situated along the water’s edge. Relatively upmarket, inexpensive accommodation is virtually nonexistent in this area. This lesser-known beach is located in a very secluded part of Koh Samui, on the northeast corner of the island where most of the bays have been given over to private residential developments.

Fun and... Simply Unforgettable!

magine how it feels to speed across the water powered by a sail in the sky; you’re standing on a board, watching the kite above you, the waves ahead of you, and then you jump right in the air, not just a foot or two, but up to 30 feet. You hang in the air for a long moment and then you’re down on the water again rushing across the sea. This is Kiteboarding, an action sport suitable for a wide variety of people. Kiteboarding is taking the world by storm. A cross between windsurfing, wakeboarding and paragliding, riders harness the power of the wind with a large flying kite and use it to pull them across the water with their feet strapped to a small board. If you are a confident swimmer with an average fitness level you can learn this sport, but be warned, once you learn, you will gradually spend less time at work and more time chasing the wind and waves. Its qualities include the need for only light wind (7-10 knots) to ride with, compact equipment that is easy to travel with, and the addictive nature of being free to go where you want using the power of the wind.

The sport is easier to learn than it looks, and 90% of Kiteboarding actually involves flying the kite competently. You don’t have to be a muscle builder to learn this sport. While strength helps, once you have mastered flying the kite, it becomes easier. It is technique, and not strength that makes a good Kite Boarder. It also explains why women tend to learn the sport better than men. Women are inclined to work with the kite rather than trying to overpower it and beat it into submission. Kiteboarding can be dangerous, and thus it is highly recommended to learn the sport at an IKO certified Kiteboarding Centre where they teach you to become a safe and independent Kite Boarder. Kiteboarding Asia (KBA) is the only IKO certified school centre in Thailand. They also use only certified IKO instructors and

Shopping for Dummies- Silk by Jo Reynolds

I

am always embarrassed when friends come to Samui; they assume, quite wrongly, that being a resident here means that I must have the low down on anything remotely Thai. For example my friends believe that I should be able to identify snakes, name mysterious fruits and vegetables, know which bars will be open all night, how many miles my jeep does to the litre, and the price of diesel. I always seem to get caught off guard. Each visitor inevitably brings a whole new subject for me to stumble through. This month it was the turn of my Dutch friend ‘H’. “So Jo…I need to buy some silk, where can I buy ‘proper’ silk from?” Hmmm... That’s a very good question. If he had asked about buffalo fighting I have cool info, but with silk…I falter, answering him with weak and vague answers, recalling that I am sure real silk doesn’t burn, (or is that pearls? Or both?) ”Hans,” I come to admission, “I don’t really know.” A little pre-shopping research proved to be well worth the effort, and now I know far more than any islander really needs to! Let me share my newly obtained encyclopaedic knowledge with you. Thai silk is one of the most unique and stunning textile products in the world, and high quality silk production is a vital Thai industry, instrumental in the social and economic development of the underdeveloped Northern region. • Raw silk is a natural product made by the silkworm; this is the caterpillar of a type of moth which feeds on the mulberry bush. • The silk threads are from the cocoon made by the pupating silkworm. • Thai silk has beautiful natural textures and designs unique to Thailand. • Silk resists rot, in ancient times it was used as shrouds & closing sutures in surgery. • Silk is strong & light & makes ideal parachutes, stockings and lingerie. • Silk burns completely leaving no residue. Ah ha! • Weavers in different countries of the world produce a finished silk, all of which have very different characteristics. • Thai silk saw a massive increase in popularity and sales when Her Majesty the Queen included dresses made of silk in her tour wardrobe. • Painting on silk has been practised for centuries, leading to the modern day craft of screen printing. Due to its durability and elasticity, silk is used in many other applications; too many to list here. 21st Century Fashionistas love silk, with its rainbow colours and delicious finishes. Knowing all of this, the price tags on this luxury product don’t seem quite so daunting! Thai silk is a lifetime as well as a lifestyle investment. There you have it Hans! – Now off you go, and enjoy your silk shopping!

Bhundhari Spa Resort & Villas Samui, A Centara Resort could well be your answer, for this new premium four-star resort on the island of Samui, built on the hill overlooking famous Chaweng Beach, is being marketed as one of Thailand’s first adult exclusive resorts. “We have been looking at the market, and realised that there is potentially a strong demand for luxury spa resort accommodation that provides a romantic retreat for couples who did not want to be surrounded by children and families, where guests really could enjoy a private atmosphere,” says Mr. Chris Bailey, Senior Vice President for Sales and Marketing at Centara Hotels and Resorts. “Bhundhari Spa Resort & Villas has therefore been developed for this concept, and now that the resort is fully open it is being marketed to the adult sector, to honeymooners and to couples and individuals who want to get away for a quiet celebration and vacation. “This is, we believe, one of the first resort hotels in Thailand to be aiming exclusively at this sector of the market.” Located on a hillside with a path leading down to the beach, and with views over the town of Chaweng just 10 minutes’ away, the resort is designed in Southern Thai style and with its 124 deluxe rooms and villas is built on a scale that allows privacy. Each room and villa has its own private terrace or patio, while the larger villas offer the choice of a private pool or a Jacuzzi on the sundeck. Mr Bailey says that Centara’s Club concept is an important feature of the resort, offering exclusive and private Club Lounge access to guests along with Centara signature service of five complimentary daily meal presentations, namely continental breakfast, mid morning snacks, lunch time snacks, afternoon tea, and evening cocktails and canapés. “The idea is for complete, unashamed luxury,” he says. “Our guests are given individual attention by our staff, but they also have the privacy and the peace that comes when there are no distractions such as children having their own kind of fun.” There are two restaurants within the resort, one situated on the hillside and the other offering barefoot beach dining. Both serve Western, Thai and other Asian cuisines.

MAKING DETOX A PLEASURE Kamalaya Koh Samui Wellness Sanctuary and Holistic Spa

I

n a health mecca such as Koh Samui most people can tell you at least something about detox programs. They’re a fabulous boost to the immune system, one might say. Another talks about how they melt off the pounds, improve digestion, balance fluctuating moods and revitalize systems crying out for support. But for every person who knows about the benefits of detoxification, there’s another who finds the concept daunting - frightening, even: Am I strong enough to do this? Will I feel ill?

How can I deprive myself of all of my bad habits at the same time? What people don’t realize, however, is that there are places on Koh Samui where detox doesn’t have to be a draconian regime of deprivation, and Kamalaya Wellness Sanctuary & Holistic Spa is one of these places. The resort’s detox programs are based on medical research and then carefully assembled from a combination of holistic medicine, healthy, nutritious meals, exercise, awareness, education and life-style advice. Created by Kamalaya co-founder Karina Stewart, a nutritionist and doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Kamalaya’s detox approach supports and enhances the body’s ability to eliminate toxins and accumulated waste, while helping to re-establish inner balance for the long term. “As I see it, there are two ways in which we can approach life. One is to simply eliminate all the things we don’t like. The other is to focus on what we do like, using those things to nurture and nourish parts of ourselves that we want to develop,” Karina says. “When you fill your life with that which nourishes you and the things you actively want, the unwanted aspects naturally atrophy because you’re not focussing on them and giving them energy. At Kamalaya, we combine both approaches in our detox programs to ensure health results that are tangible and lasting.” Kamalaya pairs elimination with nourishment, creating a gentle synergy of Eastern and Western philosophies to address both physical and emotional needs. Here detox programs are aligned with Asian healing principles that see fasting as potentially depleting. Medical research shows the body requires a broad variety of nutrients in order to detox efficiently, and Kamalaya provides these in the form herbal remedies and supplements that empower the detox process and minimise its side effects. These are then complemented by the Detox Menu, a collection of creative and inspired recipes that is both delicious and deeply satisfying. And one of the best points of all... Kamalaya’s detox programs are offered in a sublimely beautiful environment on the island’s tranquil southern coast, where you can reconnect with yourself and the way you’re living your life. “Such a pleasant and easy stay,” said Director Oliver Stone after Detoxing at Kamalaya. “The days went by and the weight came off. Thank you for helping show me the way, spiritual and physical – And thanks to a very special, loving staff – every single last person and I include the gardeners working in the sun through this tropic day. I look soon to return to paradise.” So in contrast to many conventional detox programmes and their predictably short-term results, a Kamalaya’s detox is a thorough introduction to good nutrition and health. Choose to detox at Kamalaya and you can leave Koh Samui looking and feeling better, with new foundations for a longer, healthier and more vital life. Author: Margaret Rankin www.kamalaya.com

are we entering the

THE AGE OF STUPID

I

’m going to simply skate on thin ice here.

If this analogy is not something that is familiar to you, what I’m saying is that I’m going to take a risk by what I’m about to tell you. A gamble by stating things that people just don’t want to hear. A chance by telling some of you that are reading this that you just might want to rethink your transportation plans a little bit. I’m treading dangerously because it’s just not the thing that publications like ours do. But what the hell…it’s a very important issue, and if someone decides to throw stones at me because their motorcycle rental business has suddenly declined, then so be it. I’m certain that the taxi drivers will be on my side, as their business just might increase. But honestly, in the long run, I doubt that anything will change much, as the statistics year after year show that we have definitely entered into the AGE OF STUPID. Have we reached the Tilting Point of being too arrogant to acknowledge danger at the highest levels? You decide. I’ve been diligently working on this article about the dangers that tourists are faced with every day when renting motorbikes on their holidays. I’ve focused on the motorbike issue because it is definitely the most prominent, not to say that there are not others involved with car rentals, driving on the opposite side of the road, insurance complications as well as plain old stupidity. But you are faced with these same problems in your home countries I’m sure. There are many warnings out there about the dangers involved with driving a motorbike, scooter, motorcycle or any other name that describes the two-wheeled tourist transport device that either takes you to your destination, or to the morgue. “Whether you are a permanent resident, long term visitor, or just on brief holiday to the Kingdom of Thailand, there’s a likely possibility that you have already, or at least are considering to wager with one of Thailand’s deadliest dealers. When the key turns the ignition in the Land of Smiles, the stakes are as high as they get. The non-repayable debt that you’re risking has high potential to snug you down in a deep hole, for an all expenses paid trip to early retirement. Are you ready to die?” It’s been a bit of a challenge to get accurate and accurate statistics due to the fact that the data is astronomical, convoluted and downright unbelievable from every angle, so I’ve searched deep into the databases of agencies that unveil

these. Although the figures do not match up from every source, they still fall into a group of what I would consider a statistical nightmare. In 1999 a study was done by G. D. Jacobs and Amy Aeron-Thomas called A Review of Global Road Accident Fatalities. It broke down road related fatalities by region with Asia comprising a full 44% of all road fatalities worldwide. It should come as no surprise, due to my opening prelude, that Thailand has been the leader in road accidents worldwide for some time. In 2004 it was estimated that Thailand had an accident rate of 6.6 accidents per 10,000 drivers, in comparison to all of Europe that was at only 1.8 accidents per 10,000 drivers. According to the Public Health Ministry (PHM), motorcycle accidents claim the lives of 27 Thais and injure 438 every day. Of those drivers involved in accidents 80% were not wearing crash helmets. The statistics released by the PHM stated that motorcycle accidents were one of the leading causes of deaths among Thais in 2005 with 159,867 severely injured and 9,877 killed. In 2006 - 164,836 were seriously injured and 8,908 were killed. Figures forward skyrocket above the 15,000 persons killed mark in 2008, making Thailand one of the most dangerous places in the world to drive a motorbike. Statistically more than 50% died instantly at the scene of the accidents and were aged between 25-45 years of age. Road and transport accidents were the second major cause of deaths among children after drowning, with 65% of the road accident deaths involving children as motorcycle passengers. “According to official statistics (police), 12,858 people were killed in road crashes in 2005. However the real number might even be higher. According to documentation from the health sector, the real death toll could be 20,000 or more if victims who die after being removed from the crash scene are included.” And this is where we stand. So where does the problem lie? Obviously there are considerations to debate in regards to the National population itself, where Thais are not always licensed properly leading to a great number of deaths all on their own. So here you have a population that inhabits the roadways in the millions who do not have proper learning

and driving instruction experience on the whole. Let’s not get into the statistics of this issue, as that is just the way it is, but your knowledge of this is the important grain of sand in your hourglass of life. Now throw in the factors of tourists jumping on motorbikes in Thailand and racing off to the nearest waterfall or pub. If you were to ask each and every one of these tourists who hop on board a two-wheeled machine if they have a license to drive it, you will not only be astounded by the facts, but probably shake your head in disbelief. And more than we can count do not use a helmet. The question remains…Would you do this at home? “The Thais don’t, so why should I?” I discussed with our Managing Director using for this article a very vivid photograph of an injured motorist, with bones and an almost severed foot dangling from a tourist’s leg that had been run over when trying to make a right hand turn off an expressway. My request was denied, but I made a good debate, stating that if our readers do not see the aftermath and possibilities of their actions, then what impact would creating such an article make? The fact is that perhaps such pictures are only images, stories are only tales, and statistics are just numbers to you, and the reality of the situation couldn’t possibly hit home until it happens to someone you know, or maybe only when your own guts are spread out across the pavement is when you’d take the driving experience serious. Unfortunately by this time, an ‘I told you so.’ would be far too late. But I’m willing to take the risk. If you’re interested in viewing some of these photos that I have uncovered, and have a strong stomach, feel free to e-mail me at glenn@cpublishing.com, and I’ll send you excerpts from my collection of motorcycle accidents. There are many facilities, foundations, networks and programmes in place within Thailand to aid in this unfortunate ongoing claim to life. In 2007, as Thais celebrated the 80th birthday of His Majesty, King Bhumibol Adulyadej, Thailand GRSP’s board approved the project “Helmets for the King.” Eighty participating organisations from both the private and government sectors each donated 1,000 helmets to the initiative. These were painted yellow and affixed with the King’s 80th birthday anniversary badge. The 80,000 helmets were sold to the public for 80 baht (less

than USD 2.50) on conditions that those purchasing the helmets sign a pledge to always wear the helmet while riding a motorcycle. Unfortunately, no matter what measures, society and authorities take to cut down on traffic accidents and fatalities, there will still be motorists dropping like flies, for the biggest danger is not the roads, it’s not the fast engines and big wheels, nor even the alcohol and stimulants involved, but it’s the drivers themselves who put themselves and others in vulnerable, deadly situations. For those who have taken formal driving training and actually have recently obtained a valid International drivers license, your chances of staying alive on Thailand’s roads and highways are increased slightly, yet what you learned back at home may not always be applicable in a country, where an at least 20,000 souls die in motor vehicle accidents per annum.

What can you do? Take a valid Thai driving test and get licensed Respect the Rules & Respect the Law Wear a Reliable Helmet, and make sure it’s worn and attached to your head properly and firmly. A helmet without its chin strap buckled is just as good as a condom with a hole in it. Plastic helmets may suffice for traffic cops, but they’re not of any value when your head goes full force into concrete! Signal, whether to change lanes, make a pass, or make a turn, is an

essential habit to instil if one wants to stay upright, and not to mention fine free. The biggest mistake motorists make is assuming that other drivers can read their minds, particularly when turning or passing.

Use Your Mirrors. You might have noticed that many Thai motorbike drivers have removed their mirrors for no particularly justifiable reason. In fact, many Thai drivers will only use their mirrors to check their face or hair! Don’t copy them. Arrogance Equals Danger. You might have heard that most

accidents in Thailand are caused by reckless drivers on motorcycles or 10 wheelers who are most likely intoxicated. While this is true to an extent, it doesn’t mean that if you stray from large trucks, motorcycles alcohol and drugs, you’ll be safe. In fact, being passive in thinking that danger is only caused by others is the same as putting your life into their hands. Being Human with our ability to error and misjudge situations is the essential threat. While you may digest the information and experience from others such as myself, it will not keep you alive alone, but it will make you more credible and reliable to maintain your own life, if the knowledge is applied. If you have never driven a motorcycle, if you do not have a valid license to drive one (and not a car or truck), if you do not have a helmet, and if you are the sort of person with a very short attention span and the uncanny ability to fall down in stressful situations, then Do Not Drive in Thailand.

Where to Eat! S

oon after SITCA co-founder Roongfa Sringam began offering cooking classes to tourists from a small Chaweng Beach shop house in 1999, an article published in the travel page of the International Herald Tribune praised the experience, while the visiting author joked that Samui Institute of Thai Culinary Arts was a rather grand name for a simple storefront operation. In those days Koh Samui was a much sleepier place than it is today, and Thai cuisine was still building it’s now world famous reputation. Now in their 10th anniversary year, you might say SITCA, which has become an Internationally respected Thai cooking school, has grown into its name. Featured on BBC World TV’s Holiday program and recommended in the Lonely Planet, Rough Guide and Frommer’s guides to Thailand, SITCA’s twice daily Thai cooking classes are taught in their airconditioned 300 square meter facility at South Chaweng Beach. Everyone is equipped with their own burner and everything needed for a complete hands-on experience. Each student receives a cook booklet to keep notes. After class all move upstairs to the dining room where students can share the fruits of their labours with a friend if they’ve invited one, get to know their fellow Thai food lovers, and compare efforts. SITCA’s menus change for every day of the week, and most recipes can be adapted for vegetarians. The twice daily 3 hour class starts with the preparation of a homemade Thai curry paste, and is followed by instruction in how to prepare 3 dishes. There is a different paste and Thai curry dish for each day, Monday through Saturday. Years of refining the nuances of teaching foreigners, has established SITCA’s unique reputation for being one of the few places in the Kingdom that provides not just an opportunity to learn hands on, but also teaches the dietary benefits of the herbs used in the cuisine, and many little known facts about its preparation. Equally important, the critical information foreigners need so they can approximate authentic Thai dishes when they return home, is passed on. After SITCA moved to their new purpose-built facility in 2003, they began to meet the growing demands for cooks from Thai restaurants worldwide. They created intensive programs for those considering a career in the Thai food industry and restaurateurs overseas. Every year more keen amateurs participate in their six day Thai Cuisine Immersion program, while the Institute’s more comprehensive twelve day program for professionals, is the world’s first and only Thai culinary vocational training to be approved by London based City & Guilds.

Intensive Training at SITCA

Instruction in the rarefied art of Thai style fruit and vegetable carving is also offered at SITCA, in three and nine hour courses that can be schedule on demand. Those who can’t resist the pull of the beach long enough to take a class, can stop by and purchase one of several professionally produced step-by-step instructional DVDs, as well as a range of hand dried and packaged herbs, spices and homemade curry pastes. SITCA is located in Soi Colibri just off the beach road in South Chaweng, near the Centara Beach Resort. For more information visit: www.sitca.net or call 0 7741 3172

ART X CENTRIC Where works of art begin... beneath the soles of your feet.

The great art of the world is scattered in museums and galleries far and wide thanks to the spoils of war or commerce, and the best art galleries of the world draw millions of visitors year round. The problem is that art has become such a commercial ‘product’, hijacked to help sell holidays in tour brochures, that galleries have become ordeals with crowds of tour groups racing from room to room in metropolitan galleries, making it hell for them and everybody else. This is no way to enjoy art! No wonder people feel like slashing the grinning Mona Lisa - Leonardo must be laughing in that great studio in the sky. But don’t be put off! There is hope stretched across the canvas for you. In and amongst the coconut groves of Koh Samui a new gallery is about to change how people look at art. Art is not what you see, but what you make others see. - Edgar Degas

“Our exhibition space is going to be a gracious gallery... It will be a peaceful, relaxed, informal, yet professional and inviting environment for local residents, tourists, artists, and musicians to interact.

AXC (Art X Centric) is opening soon and owners Casey and Andrew Conklin aim for it to be the Arts, Entertainment and Multi-Cultural Community Centre of Koh Samui by providing culturallyenriching experiences through the transforming power of the arts. “Our goal is to raise awareness of the local arts community, and infuse the island with new life and energy by hosting a unique blend of entertaining venues and events for residents and visitors to enjoy year-round, helping to build the arts district itself into a vibrant community.” All around the island of Samui there has been an influx of visiting artists, many making Samui their home. The island Muses speak loudly here, their vernacular infused with silence, peace and serenity they penetrate the work of the artists on Samui, and bring forth works of art from the womb of their minds. Displayed in venues that are both common and most irregular, fantastic and original pieces can be found, sometimes hovering above

the rows of Reebok shoes and Gucci purses that have fallen off the backs of transport trucks, as well as within offices and restaurants, decorating their walls with repertoires from the design of the contemporary to the grace of classical predilection. Andrew and Casey have been residents on the holiday isle for the past 3 years, recognising that there is greatness at work on Samui, and that it is time to shepherd this wandering flock. Observing the need for a united and organised arts centre, Art X Centric has emerged. AXC offers a range of unique commercial and residential interior design services and reflects a sense of place with an easy mix of contemporary artwork and inspirational atmosphere. “Our exhibition space is going to be a gracious gallery offering shows of national, international, and regional artists’ works in an eclectic mélange of styles and media, as well as a sales gallery. It will be a peaceful, relaxed, informal, yet professional and inviting environment for local residents, tourists, artists, and musicians to interact. Our aim is to connect with and unite the local artists and galleries and offer a place that enables them to display and sell their art.” Along with their contemporary art gallery you will also find an espresso lounge and a designer inspired boutique. In a relaxed manner customers will be able to browse the striking canvases that adorn the walls, and chill out on one of the welcoming sofas with a freshly brewed cup of coffee, glass of wine, evening cocktail, or enjoy a fine cigar on the terrace. Casey and Andrew invite you to sit back, relax and enjoy the assortment of artistic and inspirational reading material including prestigious literature, art history books, and world renowned interior design magazines. With wireless broadband, AXC will make for the perfect place to conduct your business while enjoying the warm atmosphere and hospitality of their friendly staff.

In recognition that Koh Samui and the surrounding areas boast a high concentration of talent in all forms of art, AXC draws on this rich variety of skills to present the very best local work as well as a proportion of unique work from other areas. “Our gallery will run a continuous exhibition program to promote the local community and charity organizations, and the featured artists will be involved in the exhibitions. We encourage public interaction, communication with the artists, and participation in collaborative art, poetry, performing arts, and music programs. AXC will also host and coordinate charity events, festivals, art venues, exhibitions, art auctions, fashion shows, live music, ‘open mike’ nights, poetry readings, wine tastings’, artistic workshops, and an array of creative and exciting competitions.” The gallery will display original artworks for sale including paintings, photographs, charcoal etchings, mosaics, sculptures, unique décor and will serve as an interior design studio and sales office for artistic interior and exterior concrete stains...a virtually new concept to Thailand. AXC also offers various services including interior design, creating custom tailored artwork specifically designed for the customer and their space, commercial and residential art packages, artwork rental programs, art consulting and personal assistance in the acquisition and selection of artwork, and custom framing. One of the most unique features and specializations of AXC is the professional application of artistic concrete stains. Admired by homeowners, architects and designers, stained concrete provides virtually unlimited colour schemes, numerous patterns and the ability to design natural and flowing spaces for both residential and commercial settings. It’s an affordable alternative to granite, marble and other high-end surfaces.

Queen’s cup

T

hailand’s own Chinnarat Phadungsil prevailed over his peers in the Queen’s Cup with a modish three-shot victory to claim his third Asian Tour title on August 16th.

Sporting three birdies over his closing five holes enabled Chinnarat to press Japan’s Yoshinobu Tsukada (71), Kim Dae-hyun of Korea (68) and compatriot Udorn Duangdecha (67) into a share of second place in the US$300,000 Asian Tour event, sponsored by the Sports Authority of Thailand and Bangkok Airways. Khun Chinnarat, only 20 years old, is being hailed as the future king of Asian Golf as he ended his week with 16-under-par 268 due to a magnificent four-under-par 67 in the final round at the Santiburi Samui Country Club. South Africa’s Keith Horne and Thammanoon Srirot of Thailand finished joint fifth on 272 with the promising Kiradech Aphibarnrat of Thailand a further stroke back. “It feels fantastic to win the Queen’s Cup. I can’t believe that I have won three times before my 21st birthday,” blushed the youthful Chinnarat. “ The Queen’s Cup is a highly prestigious event for Thai people, and to have been able to participate was honour enough for the victor, but to win and have his father Khun Anand present was a true blessing, offering encouragement and guidance during one of the most important weeks of this young golfer’s career to date. “I asked my father to be with me as this was an important tournament for all Thais. He normally does not come to tournaments and he also gave me a putting tip which helped but I can’t tell you what it is as it’s our secret!” Leading final round scores: 268 - Chinnarat Phadungsil (THA) 66-65-70-67 271 - Kim Dae-hyun (KOR) 68-67-68-68, Udorn Duangdecha (THA) 70-67-6767, Yoshinobu Tsukada (JPN) 68-66-66-71 272 - Thammanoon Srirot (THA) 69-67-70-66, Keith Horne (RSA) 74-66-64-68 273 - Kiradech Aphibarnrat (THA) 65-71-70-67 274 - M. shopping & business Koh Samui is a thriving culmination of villages that have become united as a business community, supplying not only the island with modern day amenities, but also exports and imports from around the globe. EGO House of Silk

Asian Lights and Design Co., Ltd

M

ichael de Jaegher arrived on the holiday Mecca of Koh Samui 5 years ago and had begun to set up an export business to Europe. Little did he know at the time that his plans were about to change. The unexpected events that were about to unfold have culminated in one of the most exquisite and fashionable lighting stores on Samui. “While I was first prospecting for this business, I discovered several small family operations that were producing the most beautiful handmade lamps. I was immediately seduced by the rich creations and the warm colours of these products and they were soon to become my best selling items.” One year after his appearance, as Michael was unable to find a good choice of handmade lamps on Samui, he decided to start his own lamp shop rather than to have to import by order. It all began with a mere 3 collections. This grew with the incessant requests for more choices and luxurious quality similar to those that Michael had composed within his first compilation. He eventually found himself adding more and more on a regular basis, including Vietnamese silk and extraordinary bamboo lanterns. “Now we are proud to offer what is by far the largest choice of handmade lighting on the island.” Michael’s collections were soon to become the talk of the island as he added other beautiful handmade products. Traditional Thai umbrellas, hot air (lucky) balloons, candles, perfume dispensers, silk and lacquer boxes, bamboo and lacquer bowls, plates, beautiful table sets, lighting sets made with Para-rubber leafs, stunning hammocks made by the Marbri tribe in the Northern hills, and the list goes on… “Now the shop is quite a sight, especially at night of course. Every day people stop to take pictures in front of our shop!” Transporting these items can often be somewhat of an issue for travellers, as some of Asia Light’s lamps reach 1m50 high. However Michael says not to worry, for each lamp they have the appropriate box for shipping so that buyers can easily transport their purchases on their flight as checkin luggage. Michael also adds one piece of advice for those who are contemplating bringing home one of his exclusive products. “Don’t be afraid of the weight; the heaviest lamp weighs not more than 9kg when packed, with most ranging between 2 and 6 kilograms. If selftransporting is not an option, we can also ship the lamp anywhere in the world for you.” For local businesses or for large orders, Asia Lights can offer very interesting discounts, and for any International purchases they can act as wholesalers at very competitive prices. Asia Lighting is easy to find at its location in the heart of Lamai, on the corner of the Beach Road and the Lamai Plaza Night Market opposite of the Bangkok Bank. Or simply look for the most astounding array of unique lights that you have ever seen on Samui, lighting up the Asian skies. Looking for Teachers

rescue ME!!!

ZITA

My Mum was brought to the DRCS after she was hit by a car. Thankfully it wasn’t too bad and shortly after, my 4 brothers and I were born in the puppy house at the DRCS. Of course it didn’t take long for my brothers to get adopted, not many people ask for females. I am having a good life at the DRCS together with all my lovely playmates, but I will always dream of my own house and family!

Since establishing our first branch in 2001, we have worked hard to create and maintain our friendly, relaxed, but highly effective environment in which to learn Thai. Mind Your Language’s basic teaching philosophy is to spend as much time as possible on speaking and listening to practical Thai conversation. We believe that learning should be both effective and fun, so we keep our groups to a maximum of 6 students to ensure that everyone benefits from a more personal teaching approach, and that the groups progress together. We are currently looking for individuals who are interested in learning the art of teaching Thai to foreigners in both Samui and Phuket. You will be trained at our cost, and contracted to teach Thai within our facilities. For more information contact Jom or Natasha at: 0 7796 2088 Mobile 08 7284 6582 or chaweng@ mindyourlanguagethailand.com

FENG SHUI

Intuition Dictates the Best Tools for You

Feng Shui is a wonderful combination of art, science and intuition, used to enhance every area of life. Is your career at a standstill, is a lack of money an issue, do you want more love in a partnership? Feng Shui products are tools and “cures” that adjust or fix the flow of energy when it is stuck, stagnant, or moving too quickly.

A Feng Shui product can also enhance the flow of energy for extra attention on a part of life. Feng Shui symbols of good fortune can be used to jazz up a love life, enhance career or fame, and provide helping people to enter your environment, or improve health issues. Products and tools call more money into your life or help bring in a loving relationship. Feng Shui tools, products, and gifts are symbols of good fortune that manifest the positive aspect of chi energies within the living space. In Feng Shui and China, the Chinese words are graphically beautiful. They communicate special meaning through a visual experience. So, in Feng Shui, products and objects are used as symbols of good luck. Some products have hidden meanings other products are more obvious. This month we focus on longevity and health.

• Feng Shui symbols for longevity and health – There is no luck without health and long life. Good Feng Shui creates both for anyone practicing it. A crane is a favoured bird that creates harmony and longevity. A product of Feng Shui is a marble crane sculpture in a garden. A pine tree is a strong Feng Shui symbol of permanence because it does not lose needles in the winter. A statue or product of a peach tree symbolizes protection and longevity. Bamboo is durable and thrives in all soils. The bamboo is a Feng Shui symbol that bends and adapts, but won’t break. A perfect Feng Shui tortoise is a great symbol of long life for a home. It also is a symbol of wealth, protection and support. Feng Shui uses the jade cicada as an emblem of immortality and happiness. Displaying a dried gourd around the home is a good omen in Feng Shui.
