Love and marriage A bride recently shared with me a piece of advice she received during her own engagement: Don’t plan the wedding, plan the marriage. This issue of C-VILLE Weddings strives to do both. Planning a wedding will be both stressful and exciting, and for that we have 10 pages of creative ideas to make your big day a truly personalized affair. On page 15, we spotlight a few local vendors you may want to incorporate. To keep it real, Brett Baker reflects on the first few years of her marriage (p.91). As it turns out, things don’t look quite like you’d expect them to three years in, but don’t worry— that’s a good thing. Of course, if during the course of your planning you decide it’s all too much (like the couple on page 29), we’ve got tips on how to successfully elope. Because, let’s face it, sometimes even the

Jeannine found a venue that would allow pets, and let her vendors know of her plans. She hired a handler to bring Baxter to the event before the ceremony and take him home afterward (and keep him away from the wedding cake!). She asked the oldest children in the wedding party to be responsible for getting him down the aisle. “Our wedding was a disaster— but we’ve been married 40 years!”

Prom, 1971

JEN FARIELLO

You put a lot of prep into your big day, but if it doesn’t go off without a hitch, don’t worry. As Carrie told Charlotte on “Sex and the City,” the worse the wedding, the better the marriage. Here’s one local couple who knows that first-hand. “[We have] no wedding pictures because the one camera broke. There was no honeymoon. A substitute priest performed the wedding ceremony due to an emergency. The marriage certificate arrived with the wrong date on it, and most of the 20 or so people at our tiny gathering were crying, as they felt we were making a big mistake. In fact, my father hugged me after the nuptials and said, ‘Good luck. You are going to need it!’ “On November 4, 2012, my husband and I celebrated 40 years of marriage. My elementary school heart throb, who transitioned into a hard-working young man and loving husband, continues to provide love and friendship—the fuel for a lasting relationship. Oh, don’t worry, I do my share, too.”

Jody and Gillie Jenkins Married November 4, 1972

Party of 2: Should you elope? Vegas is a popular option, you may prefer a destination wedding, where many details are planned for you. Or make a simple trip to the courthouse. (There are different requirements in every city, state, and country—research the time it takes to get a marriage license and any medical tests.) Sandra and Bryan made sure loved ones didn’t feel left out. In June, they held a catered event to celebrate with friends and relatives, renting tables, a band, and a dance floor. As for advice on eloping, Sandra cautioned, “Be sure you’re O.K. with whatever happens.” If you elope to a place you haven’t visited before, you don’t know how good the food and accommodations are. But if you’re craving an intimate day and are game for adventure, eloping saves you time, money, and a whole lot of stress.—Lynn Thorne

JEN FARIELLO

Sandra and Bryan Maurer spent months planning a wedding in Ireland. But last winter the couple decided to elope instead. “I’ve been a bridesmaid eight times and every time, the bride just looked panicked all day,” Sandra said. The overwhelming process of wedding planning leads a lot of couples to elope. Sandra visited letsrunoff.com and booked a last-minute ceremony on February 5 at Charlottesville’s Clifton Inn. She bought flowers at Whole Foods, wore a gown she’d already purchased to wear in Ireland, and used the photographer recommended by the Inn. The result? A memorable day that let the couple focus on themselves instead of an elaborate ceremony with 50 guests. When you elope, there are no rules—anything goes. Invite a few loved ones. Let the bride’s father give her away. Where should you go? While

Just kidding! After planning an elaborate wedding in Ireland, Sandra and Bryan Maurer eloped instead.

Elopement tip: After you’re married, having an event that’s classified as a “party” instead of a “wedding reception” will be a lot easier on your wallet!

Pretty in petals KATIE STOOPS

ERIN HOFFMAN Date of her wedding: May 29, 2011. Groom’s name: Paul Gray. Where she got her dress: Priscilla of Boston at Tysons Corner. Designer: Melissa Sweet. Cost: $5,000. Alterations: $500. How many dresses she tried on: 15. Why you chose it: I knew that I wanted a dress that was traditional with just a little bit of fun mixed in. After trying on 14 other dresses, I was desperate to find something that wasn’t too plain but that also didn’t have a lot of beading. When I tried on my dress I knew it was the perfect balance, and I instantly fell in love with it. Once I tried it on with the matching veil I was sold! Favorite detail about it: I love the cascading petals down the dress and the veil. It brought the right level of interest to the dress without being overwhelming. How it worked out: Our ceremony was held outside at the Clifton Inn, and I think that the dress was the perfect fit for our garden wedding. My only regret was not having a shorter dress to change into later as it ended up being close to 100 degrees (which we didn’t expect in May)!

Like a dream

JEN FARIELLO

CAROLINA DUEÑAS Date of her wedding: August 4, 2012. Groom’s name: Daniel Young. Where she got her dress: Rosalin’s Bridal Boutique in Falls Church, Virginia. Designer: Maggie Sottero; lace bolero from Alex Bridal on Etsy. Alterations: My mother altered the dress herself. Thankfully, the only thing that needed to be altered was the length of the gown. She also found matching lace and made my veil by hand. How many dresses she tried on: I spent a couple of months stopping by various bridal shops in New York (where I currently attend graduate school). I must have tried on at least 30 gowns. Why she chose it: I had originally been going for a more understated look when I started my wedding gown search. I tried this dress on at my mother’s suggestion and instantly felt it tug at my heartstrings. With the long train, layers of tulle, and delicate flowers, it was dreamy and romantic—everything I wanted to say when I walked down the aisle to marry my best friend. Favorite detail about it: The lace bolero. While I loved the look and feel of the gown, I wanted something a little more conservative for our Catholic ceremony. I liked the idea of adding a bolero to the look, so I started searching on Etsy once I finalized the gown. How it worked out: During our ceremony at the UVA chapel, I saw my husband tear up as I walked down the aisle. Somehow, it all worked out perfectly, and I was able to marry my college sweetheart on the same grounds where we fell in love over six years ago.

JENNIFER DAUGHERTY Date of her wedding: June 15, 2012. Groom’s name: Jeff Krentel. Where she got her dress: Riziks in downtown Washington, D.C. Designer: Jenny Packham. Alterations: None. I was exact the size we ordered so it worked out. And, the 4" heels I wore made the length of the dress end right at my toes. How many dresses she tried on: I went to three stores with some friends (not all in one day—that would be crazy!) and had a good time with it; we laughed and made sure we had an enjoyable time. I wanted to narrow down the process so that when my mom came into town we could go to try on just a few to pick out the perfect one. Although, the first time I saw my dress it was an instant favorite. I made sure I tried on others just to check to see if I was irrationally in love with the Jenny Packham Eden dress. No other dresses stood a chance next to it. Why she chose it: The dress was unique and represented my style: a little bohemian mixed with a little glamour. Favorite detail about it: My favorite detail has to be the beaded shoulders. They are so elegant and special. How it worked out: Because I loved my dress so much, when I woke up the morning of the wedding all I wanted to do was put it on and get married. I was so eager and excited to finally get to wear what I consider the most beautiful dress I have ever worn.

Have a ball(gown)! JASON KEFFER

SARAH SANJAKDAR Date of her wedding: September 2, 2012. Groom’s name: David Emery. Where she got her dress: Hitched Bridal Salon in Georgetown. Designer: Christos “Peony” dress. Cost: $6,900. Alterations: $500 to add a bustle and cups. How many dresses she tried on: Six. Why she chose it: It was classic but blush and had beautiful workmanship and floral detailing that I found suitable for an outdoor wedding. Favorite detail about it: All the appliqué flowers an Swarovski crystals sewn on. How it worked out: The dress worked out very well because although it was a ballgown, it was light and easy to move in. The one thing I would recommend to future brides is to skip the train and bustle for an outdoor wedding because it was a bit of a hassle for me.

Blushing bride

CRAMER PHOTO

N ATA LI E SWO PE Date of her wedding: July 7, 2012. Groom’s name: Langdon Greenhalgh. Where she got her dress: Carine’s Bridal Atelier in Georgetown. Designer: Monique Lhuillier, “Peony” dress in blush. Cost: $5,500. Alterations: $600. How many dresses she tried on: I visited eight bridal boutiques and tried on approximately 60 dresses (total) over the course of six weeks. Why she chose it: The blush color complemented my skin tone and provided a welcome departure from traditional white. I also loved the delicate feel and exquisite drape of the silk jacquard fabric, which I thought would breathe well in summertime heat. The overall silhouette of the dress was figure-conscious but non-restricting (I definitely wanted a dress that would not hinder me on the dance floor!). Most importantly, however, I just loved the inherent versatility of its design, which was unique enough to be dramatic but understated enough to remain elegant. Favorite detail about it: My favorite detail is the silk jacquard print: lightweight yet luxurious. How it worked out: I loved every minute I spent in this dress, despite the sweltering 104-degree weather. Its unfussy design gave me free rein to accessorize, and I ended up wearing some stunning adornments, including heirloom jewelry and a customized sparkly headband. The dress truly reflected the tone of our formal evening nuptials while also proving to be an outrageously fun dancing frock.

Drama keen

WILL KERNER

AFOLAKE OJUMU Date of her wedding: October 6, 2012. Groom’s name: Andrew Wilson. Where she got her dress: Amanda’s Touch in Staunton, Virginia. Designer: Alfred Angelo. Cost: $895 (after a $100 off coupon). How many dresses she tried on: About five. Why she chose it: I really wanted to buy an all lace dress, but they’re so expensive and I was trying to stay within a budget. So I figured that if I couldn’t have a lace dress, I would buy something that I had never seen on anyone else before. I tried on a dress that had red lace on it, one that was a really fitted evening gown, and one that was a one shoulder-style dress with gold trim. Then they brought me my dress and I loved it the minute I saw it. It was ivory, it fit beautifully, and the flowers on the skirt were big, dramatic, and so different from anything that I had seen on any other bride. The moment that I put it on was the first moment that I felt like I was actually getting married. I didn’t even want to take it off; I just hung out in the store for the next 45 minutes wearing my dress. Favorite detail about it: I loved the flowers on the skirt. They were big, had silvery beads, and really made the dress unique. How it worked out: It was wonderful! I wore it throughout the ceremony and the first half of the reception and it was very comfortable. The skirt was poofy and the train was fairly long and so it looked great in the pictures and when I was walking down the aisle. My husband loved it too; his suit and all his details were pretty unique as well, so we were a matched set.

R ACH E L E RWIN Date of her wedding: June 18, 2011. Groom’s name: Jeffrey Meyer. Where she got her dress: Bella Rosa Bridal in Richmond. Designer: Paloma Blanca. Cost: $3,000. Alterations: $300. How many dresses she tried on: 20. Why she chose it: I knew that I wanted to find a dress that was timeless that I could look back on in 30 years and wouldn’t feel those pangs of, “What was I thinking?” I tried on a handful of dresses and I had thought I had found “the one.” When I went back to try it on a couple of weeks later, a new gown was in the window and I decided to try it on while I was there. Conveniently, they had just gotten it in that week and I was the second person to try it on. From the moment I put it on, I knew it was “the dress.” Favorite detail about it: The keyhole cut out on the back of dress. How it worked out: Like a dream!

DÉCOR

Whether elegant, glamorous, or downright rustic—the theme of your wedding depends on the décor. Take your cue from these couples.

ERIC KELLEY PHOTOGRAPHY

ERIC KELLEY PHOTOGRAPHY

This bride spent the year of her engagement collecting silverware, three different sizes of plates, vases, and linens at different antique malls and country stores in Covesville, Greenwood, Madison, and Ruckersville. “The majority of [the cups and saucers] were given to me as a wedding gift by my godmother, who has been collecting fine demitasses and teacups since she was a little girl,” the bride said.

Instead of your typical “Mr.” and “Mrs.” chair signs for the reception, this couple had an artist design signs with lyrics from a favorite song. (The other sign says, “If my heart was a house...”)

A garland of vintage photographs of this couples’ parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents was hung in remembrance. “We also played ‘You Can Close Your Eyes’ by James Taylor during the ceremony to honor all of the people that couldn’t be there that day,” the bride said. She mounted each photograph on the same scrapbooking paper found throughout the rest of the wedding décor.

This couple decided to theme their wedding around Tim McGraw’s “Set This Circus Down.” Said the bride, “It’s about two crazy people chasing dreams who say one day they’ll find a place outside of the craziness and set their circus down. Simple and classic is the way to go here—but it doesn’t have to be boring! Use what’s on hand (and your imagination) to create a pretty backdrop.

The bride snagged this idea online. “We loved the idea of using old ladders and wanted to have each flower bouquet symbolize a family member who has already passed. Our florist, Sugar Magnolias, designed it and set it up. They also provided the ladders.”

FOOD

CRAMER PHOTO

Probably the most memorable part of your day for guests (besides the PDA between you and your hunnie)—the food. These couples got it right.

LUCY O PHOTO

CRAMER PHOTO

A family-style meal from Dinner at Home is a relaxed option for less formal weddings. “Passing dishes of warm, nourishing food around the table felt like such a nice way to connect with our community of friends and family,” said the bride. Serving a meal family-style gives the guests more control over what they eat—and how much.

Try pie! Laura Grace and Michael opted for pie over cake. Their friend A.J. made four different kinds: strawberry rhubarb, chocolate, blueberry, and peach. Yum!

A gin fizz with a rosemary finish. Said the bride: “Rosemary simply felt and smelled familiar and homey... Once we’d decided to have it in our flowers, I just couldn’t stop slipping it in everywhere.” Bonus: In the Middle Ages, the herb was associated with weddings as a symbol of love and loyalty.

FAVORS

ERIC KELLEY PHOTOGRAPHY

Send guests home with a personalized gift to say “thank you” for joining in the day. Be it a wedding prop, a tasty ingredient, or a clown nose (really!), your favors should be a reminder of the special day your guests just witnessed.

Handmade, with love. The bride cleaned out grocery stores’ stocks of sea salt and infused it with rosemary. Later, friends gathered for a favor assembly party, putting the salt in Ball jars, adding a stamped topper, and tying on the tags. Accompanying each jar was a handful of cards printed with the couple’s favorite recipes.

CRAMER PHOTO

Red noses extended the theme of one couple’s engagement shots. “Justin and I are always laughing and telling jokes and generally clowning around, and we surround ourselves with people that do the same,” the bride said. But did guests get it? “I didn’t have anyone ask why we provided clown props!”

These Mason jars (complete with chalkboard labels the bride found on Etsy) tripled as drink glasses, seating cards, and favors.

Anticipating a hot August wedding day, the couple had these fans custom-designed and printed by an artist friend. The bride then cut them out and glued each one to a stick the groom had collected during walks around their neighborhood.

A hangover kit doubles as a silly gift for guests: a small can of V8, a mini bottle of vodka, a packet with two Advil tablets, and an Emergen-C packet.

Foodie favor. The bride found these jars of blackberry jam on Etsy. “We thought they would be perfect for a farm wedding, she said.

Beyond the food, the flowers, and the trinkets guests go home with, what makes a wedding truly special is sentimentality. See how these couples fit in special touches at every turn.

A custom-made guestbook (from ShabbyScrap on Etsy) combined one couple’s favorite quotes, songs, and poems, resulting in a one-of-a-kind keepsake.

Bags filled with peanuts directed guests to their table at this wedding. Each one was stamped with an image that corresponded to wooden bifolds on the tables. Said the bride, “We placed a sign on the table that said, ‘Enjoy some peanuts while y’all try to figure this out!’”

To keep guests focused on the day (rather than their cell phones), one couple posted a note asking that no one take photographs during the ceremony, “so that we can see your faces and you can see ours.”

After helping her father build this sled 15 years ago, this bride decided that’s how she wanted to go down the aisle—pulled by her family Percherons, Moe and Tess. “Having that personal touch made the whole experience so much more amazing,” she said.

Found mostly in the bride’s family home in Charlottesville (and a few online and at antique shops in the area), the skeleton keys were used as escort cards: “Find your key, find your table.” Bonus: Guests got to keep their key as a keepsake (keypsake?) from the day.

Great idea: One couple incorporated a wine box ceremony into their wedding day. The box holds two bottles of wine and a love letter written to each other. On their second anniversary, they open the box, share the wine, and read the letters, then replace the contents for the next anniversary.

Love Story

True life: I’m married! What’s marriage really like, three years in?

I

PHOTOS COURTESY BRETT BAKER

folded my husband’s laundry for the very first time when our marriage was just a few days old. I sat cross-legged on our mattress— which had no bed frame—and thought about how happy he’d be when he came home to see all of his clean clothes folded and put away. I was a good wife already, I thought. I had even ironed some of his dress shirts. When I heard his car pull up, I ran to the front door and flung my arms around him dramatically like they do in the movies. I told him what I’d done. You can imagine how deflated I felt as I watched my new husband retrieve, unfold, and re-fold all of his laundry because, as he said (in the kindest way possible), I hadn’t “done it quite right.” You see, my brand new husband was 6'7", and apparently there’s a certain way one must fold his shirts to make sure they all fit in the drawers instead of ramming up against the corners like a shop full of discount area rugs. This is why they say the first year is the hardest, I think. It’s a peculiar cocktail of expectation, bliss, growing pains, and adrenaline. It takes just a little while to break it in, to realize that all arguing isn’t bad and that some

expectations aren’t meant to be met; it’s O.K. if we each do our own laundry or don’t eat our dinners at our kitchen table most nights. It’s just fine that our favorite date nights include Chipotle, Netflix, and being in bed by 9:30pm. It seemed to me that everything during that first year had to be a conversation. “How should we cook the eggs?” or “Where should we put the Christmas tree?” One of my very favorite parts of marriage now is how all that can go unsaid. My husband knows that my attention span is too short to get the trash all the way to the outside trashcan, so when it’s sitting by the front door,

he’ll silently take it out. And I know that, for some reason, when my husband vacuums the downstairs, he always forgets the kitchen. So I’ll be sure to do it instead. Three years, one dog, two bad car purchases, the birth of one son, and thousands of loads of laundry later, we’ve found our year-three pace. And we’ve accepted that this complex relationship that we call a marriage will always be changing, growing, stretching and finding a way to get more comfy in our home. So much can change in three years, although I do still meet him at the front door.—Brett Baker

Marry Making

“I

One for the books

n September, we joined Steve’s parents for a two-week vacation in Europe: one week in France, followed by a family reunion in Italy. On our first full day in Paris, after I had gotten over my motion sickness, the plan was to go to Shakespeare and Company, the famous English-language bookstore as a tribute to Sylvia Beach’s original store where Ernest Hemingway and other ex-pats used to hang out. “After snapping a few photos, I headed toward the entrance. Steve’s parents tried to detain me outside with exclamations of, ‘Rae, come look at this!’ But I was too impatient to see the inside of the store and rushed to the door saying, ‘I’ll be back!’ “When I entered, I saw Steve at the counter talking to the cashier, but wanted to scan the store in its entirety before settling on one section. Upstairs, I found a small, beautiful edition of The Little Prince. Steve joined me then and said he had something to show me downstairs. He led me to a bookshelf in the fiction section, and turned away. I called after him, noticing a piece of paper tucked between two books. The paper explained that he feared his words would fail him, so he had rearranged my favorites in order to express what he felt. It wasn’t until later that I learned every single one was from my favorite book, Pride and Prejudice, and that Steve, not much of a reader, had read the book in its entirety on his phone so I wouldn’t find out. “When I had finished, he said something to the effect of, ‘I have loved you for three years. Will you be my partner in life?’”
