The Bridge Progressive Arts Initiative is pleased to announce the inaugural season of its Community Supported Art (CSA) program. Over the last 20 years, Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) has become a popular way for consumers to buy seasonal food directly from local farms. With the same buylocal spirit in mind, we are pleased to bring The Bridge CSA to our community, to support local art, artists, and collectors. Interested consumers/collectors can purchase a “share” from The Bridge and in return will receive 4 pieces of art, an invitation to a “meet the artists” event, and a special arts kit produced by the Bridge. Member shares will cost $200 for the season and can be purchased by contacting The Bridge via phone or email. Sales of member shares will begin on September 15th with an an nouncement of the selected artists and will sell out fast. In his recent New York Times ar ticle called “Buy Local” Gets Creative,
author Randy Kennedy described the CSA movement as “a deeper thancommerce connection between people who make things and people who buy them.” He continues, “The C.S.A.’s have flourished in larger cities as a kind of organic alternative to the dominance of the commercial gallery system and in smaller places as a way to make up for the dearth of galler ies, as a means of helping emerging artists and attracting people who are interested in art but feel they have neither the means nor the connec tions to collect it.” The goals of the CSA program are to support artists and to create an engaged community of local arts supporters. Take advantage of this unique op portunity to interact with the arts. ABOUT THE BRIDGE PAI: The Bridge Progressive Arts Initiative is a catalyst for creativity in Charlottesville, by creating deep conversation between the arts and community. More informa tion can be found at http://thebridge pai.com or on facebook https://www. facebook.com/TheBridgePAI.

t has Woodrow Wilson’s home and presidential library, a museum of American frontier life, and an internationally acclaimed theatre company performing in a handsome recreation of Shakespeare’s original indoor theatre. Staunton has history, culture, and charm—and every August it has a festival of chamber music that would make a much larger city proud. The Staunton Music Festival’s Summer Sounds 2013, August 16-24, will feature 20 performances, including
eleven free lunchtime and afternoon concerts, by an international group of more than 60 musicians playing everything from the stately baroque works of Bach and Boccherini to the challenging contemporary compositions of Cage and Crumb. Fifteen years ago, pianist, harpsichordist, and conductor Carsten Schmidt organized a couple of concerts by a handful of friends, at Mary Baldwin College and at Merillat House, one of the oldest and most distinctive private homes in town. The following year, he held concerts in the gardens
of President Wilson’s Staunton birthplace. As the number of events has grown over the years, Schmidt has assembled a core group of 35-40 players who return for each festival, lured by varied and innovative programming, musical community, and appreciative audiences. “Being at Staunton is completely different from life throughout the rest of the year, which usually involves going from concert to concert each week,” says bassoonist Stephanie Corwin, who will be playing in her fourth festival. “It is such a treat to have the
time to focus and play such great and varied music with really creative and talented colleagues.” Corwin is impressed by the openmindedness of local listeners as well. “Carsten’s programming is far from standard, often exploring a theme or topic in its extreme manifestations,” she says, “and I often hear members of the audience say that this new or edgy or out-of-the-box piece was their favorite. They seem genuinely interested in listening to new and unfamiliar things and that is one of the things I love most about this festival. It is a rarity!”

While the final two evening programs this year are all-Baroque occasions, “typically what Carsten likes to do is mix it up with very adventurous programs and a balance of old and new, small group and large group,” says festival Executive Director Jason Stell. “It’s really the best of avant-garde and world premiere pieces to all the way back to authentic 17th and 18th century music.” That enthusiasm for authenticity extends to the musical instruments themselves. “Any time we do a Baroque piece we use the historical instruments,” Stell says. “I don’t know of another festival
in the area that has so much historical performance going on.” Schmidt also gives introductory talks an hour before each ticketed concert. Most programs take place at Trinity Episcopal, the oldest church in town, and the one graced by eleven Tiffany windows. Making Overtures on Saturday August 17 at 7:30 p.m. is typically wide-ranging and eclectic. It opens with Kaiserwalzer by Johann Strauss II, and continues with Sergei Prokofiev’s Overture on Hebrew Melodies and Georg Frideric Handel’s overture to the opera Giulio Cesare. Having begun with a waltz commissioned as a toast of friendship from the Austrian to the German Emperor, followed by a gloss on Jewish folk music and a stately intro to an opera on an ancient historical theme, the program takes a bold leap into the mid-twentieth century avant-garde world of American composer-provocateur John Cage, with selections from one of his most played works, Sonatas and Interludes for prepared piano. The evening concludes with a reassuring return to tonal territory in Gioachino Rossini’s Overture to The Barber of Seville and Felix Mendelssohn’s concert overture, The Hebrides. The Concerto/Concertino program Sunday the 18th at Trinity consists of Antonio Vivaldi’s Concerto in B, RV 580, for four violins, Luzzasco Luzzaschi’s Two madrigals, for voices and continuo, Manuel De Falla’s Concerto for harpsichord, flute, oboe, clarinet, violin, and cello, Arvo Part’s Tabula Rasa, for two solo violins, prepared piano, and strings, and Ludwig van Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 1. Le Tombeau de Couperin, Monday August 19 at 7:30 p.m. at Trinity includes Maurice Ravel’s Le Tombeau De Couperin for orchestra and his Prelude, Fugue, And Toccata for piano along with Francois Couperin’s Nouveau Concert No. 8, “Dans la goût théâtral” his Victoria, Christo resurgenti, and his Les barricades mysterieuses. The program also includes Claude Debussy’s “Le Chambre Magique” & “Danse Exstatique,” an excerpt from Felix Mendelssohn’s From Le Martyre De Saint Sebastian, Charles Dotas’s New Work For Jazz Ensemble, Louis Couperin’s La Charon, and a new work by 2013 festival composer Zachary Wadsworth. Early Keyboard Extravaganza on Tuesday, August 20 at 7:30 p.m. at Trinity has music by nine different composers played on a total of five harpsichords, two fortepianos, and two organs. The program opens and close with concertos for harpsichords and strings by Johann Sebastian Bach, and includes works by Johann’s son

C.P.E. Bach and Girolamo Frescobaldi, John Dowland, Francois Couperin, Franz Schubert, Frédéric Chopin, Jacques Duphly, and Dieterich Buxtehude. After a twenty-minute intermission, the Extravaganza itself will be followed by an encore of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Rondo in D, and Johannes Brahms’ Liebesliederwalzer. The pre-concert talk before Upstairs/ Downstairs on Wednesday, August 21 at 7:30 p.m. at Trinity should be particularly lively. That’s the program with Black Angels (Thirteen Images from the Dark Land), an electrified string quartet by the contemporary American composer George Crumb. “We’ve done some Crumb in the past few years and it’s music that really pushes the boundary between traditional concert music and performance art,” Stell says. “There are lighting effects sometimes. There is drama. There is acting. I wasn’t quite
sure how this would go over and it went extremely well. I think people even in small town settings like being challenged. They like when we ask something of them. They’re not just coming for the usual string quartets and trios.” Subtitled Thirteen Images from the Dark Land, and consisting of thirteen parts, the piece requires the players to shout, chant, whistle and whisper, and play gongs, maracas, and crystal glasses as well as their standard instruments (violin, viola, cello). Upstairs/ Downstairs includes Symphony No. 6 in D, “La Casa del Diavolo” by the 18th century Baroque composer Luigi Boccherini, Ave Maria for eight unaccompanied voices by the 16th century master of church music, Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, and Gabriel Faure’s 1890 choral Requiem, for a chamber orchestra of 24 players, a chorus of 16, and a quartet of soloists. MUSIC FESTIVAL continued from pg. 18
The following evening, Crumb’s Ancient Voices of Children (1970), for voice and chamber ensemble will be heard as part of the Melo-Drama program at Trinity. The five- movement work is subtitled A Cycle of Songs on Texts by Federico García Lorca. Two other works with literary roots are on the program. André Caplet’s The Masque of the Red Death (1908), for harp, string quartet, and narrator, is based on two Edgar Allan Poe stories. Tchaikovsky’s Romeo & Juliet Overture is a symphonic staple, but will be heard here in an arrangement for chamber ensemble by Mendelssohn. Rounding out the program is Mozart’s Quintet, K. 452 for piano, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and horn. Corwin calls the quintet “one of my favorite pieces,” noting that in a letter to his father Mozart wrote that it was the best piece he had written. “For me, the quintet is really piano-driven, but the winds accentuate both the intimacy and the expansiveness of the piece in an integrated and organic way. I feel like I learn something new every time I play it.” Two Baroque programs played on period instrument follow at Trinity at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, August 23 and Sat-
urday, August 24. Baroque Inside/Out on the 23rd includes Pachelbel’s beloved Canon and Gigue for three violins and continuo, Louis Couperin’s Prelude, Allemande, Gigue in E, Johann Christoph Bach’s cantata Die Furcht des Herrn, William Williams’ Sonata No. 6 in F, “In Imitation of Birds,” and Heinrich Biber’s Battalia a 10 in D major, C. 61. It will conclude with Antonio Vivaldi’s Gloria, a sacred work for soloists, chorus and chamber orchestra. Madrigal singers will perform in the sanctuary and churchyard during intermission. Summer Sounds 2013 concludes at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday the 24th at the American Shakespeare Company’s renowned Blackfriars Playhouse with Handel and Purcell at the Blackfriars, a yet-to-be-announced evening of orchestral, choral, vocal and chamber music by Georg Frederic Handel and Henry Purcell. The free pre-concert talk for this final program will be at 4:00 p.m. at Temple House of Israel. The Staunton Music Festival not only presents great music, it nurtures the next generation of musicians and composers. Nine of this year’s singers and musicians are part of the festival’s Young Artists program, which gives undergraduate or graduatelevel students from top music schools in the U.S. and Europe the chance
to play with and be coached by experienced professionals. In 2008 the festival launched its Emerging Composers program, designed to identify talented composers at the beginning of their careers. Winners are commissioned to write new works and present them at the annual Happy New Ear! concert as well as at several noon recitals. This year, 2011 Emerging Composer and Richmond, Virginia native Zachary Wadsworth will return with a selection of old and world premiere compositions. One new work, for the intriguing combination of two tenors and one organ, will be heard on Monday’s Le Tombeau de Couperin program. This year’s Happy New Ear! program is at noon on Sunday the 18th at Trinity. Wadsworth’s work can also be heard as part of the What the Wind Told Me program at noon on the 23rd at St. Francis Catholic Church. Classics and premieres, masterworks by the three B’s (Bach, Beethoven and Brahms) and fresh works by 30-year olds like Wadsworth . . . the Staunton Music Festival is about the old and the new, the tradition and its continuation. “We believe that exposing people to live performance of this great music performed at the highest possible level can make an immediate impact on
people’s lives,” Stell says. “It can change their attitudes, their feeling of their community and where they live. What exactly is classical music? It’s not the preconceived notion of a very quiet, reserved audience in a very formal setting. It’s very dynamic, experimental. It’s edgy and it’s new, and part of our work is to make this music feel very up to date and a vital part of people’s lives and the community as well.” The living tradition of classical music has long been a vital part of life in the college town of Staunton. Named one of the twenty best small towns in America by Smithsonian magazine last year, the little Shenandoah Valley community with the picturesque red-brick downtown has enjoyed a renaissance in recent years, marked most visibly by the renovation of the 124-room Stonewall Jackson Hotel and Conference Center. Staunton these days is “a fabulous place to live” says REALTOR® Monica White, citing the historic architecture and cultural diversity. As she’s showing homebuyers around the area, White touts “the music festival and the music scene and the theater and everything that’s developed in the past few years. It’s amazing what has collected in our little city” she marvels. “It’s delightful.” ■

investment and in family terms it can add usable space for much of the year. Since an added porch should look as if it was always there, its materials need to match the existing house. Local building codes will probably dictate some aspects of the porch. Nevertheless, the roofing materials should be the same as the existing roof, and columns and railings should echo the home’s style. Then too, the porch’s size and design should be in keeping with the proportions of the house to make it completely integrated. Have adequate overhang to protect porch sitters from sun and rain. Plan for ceilings to be at least as high as indoors. It’s also best for the porch to be at least eight or nine feet deep to offer real living space where people don’t have to sit single file and can move past furniture easily.
Enhancements
What goes well on a porch? Some people install roll-up screening or awnings to deploy against the hot sun
or a rain shower. A hanging swing— ornate for a Victorian-style home or sleek for a modern design—invites people to linger. All-weather furniture is a must and some people install indoor-outdoor carpeting. Built-in storage units are also popular. Weatherproof cushions can provide extra seating atop the units and toys, folding chairs and those very cushions can be easily stowed away. Ceiling fans are wonderful for circulating air on warm days. Outdoor heating provided by permanently mounted units or portable devices can extend the season as much as a month on either end. Some people add speakers for an existing sound system, although it’s important to be sure your neighbors don’t object to your music selections. Lighting options range from flickering faux gas-lamps to rheostat-controlled lights on ceiling fans. Amber or yellow bulbs significantly reduce the number of bugs that will be attracted because many insects don’t “see” those colors. Yellow bulbs are
now available with energy-saving compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs, which have earned the ENERGY STAR rating. Finally, hanging flower baskets spell summer and hospitality, while moveable plant stands can take advantage of the sunlight for growing flowers or herbs in small pots. Cheerful plants in containers on porch steps are inviting and window-box-style planters either atop porch railings or hanging from them provide even more “garden” space. Check with your gardening center about which plants will attract butterflies and humming birds. Some people also use such planters for kitchen herbs. Finally for extra delight, hang a hummingbird feeder or two. Whether you’re house shopping or considering a remodeling project, always keep an eye out for a friendly front porch. Marilyn Pribus and her husband moved from California to Albemarle County near Charlottesville six years ago this month.

here’s nothing more welcoming than front porches,” declares REALTOR ® Janet Matthews, owner of Charlottesville Town and Country. “They harken back to an earlier era and create continuity with our past. The also offer an opportunity to create relationships we might otherwise miss as we speak to neighbors as they walk by, often with their dogs.” She pauses and adds, “Actually I was doing just that last night as a matter of fact.” Porches are nothing new. Thomas Jefferson had porches at Monticello. There are the iconic white-columned porches at the front and back of the mansion. In addition, two small, recently recreated enclosed porches off the Southeast Piazza provided extra living space. These “porticles” (as Mr. Jefferson termed them) could be entered from the house or from the outside with adjustable louvered blinds to fine-tune for shade, airflow and some privacy. Who doesn’t love a front porch? It’s a place for children to play, a place to relax, and a place to entertain. Charlottesville resident Kay Moore has an amusing front-porch memory. “It wasn’t amusing at the time,” she says, waggling her index finger. “I was late coming home from a prom. Instead of being in before midnight, it was about two in the morning and my parents were both sitting on the front porch. In the dark. Fully dressed. And not happy.” Most front porch memories are pleasant, however, and while we don’t have statistics on it, there’s a general feeling that houses with porches sell faster than those with a plain face to the world. “Porches definitely give more curb appeal,” Matthews points out. “They’re a very inviting feature encouraging people to come into the home.” Even a small porch can shelter visitors waiting in rain or hot sun for you to answer the door. Not only do porches add charm, they add practical living space to a home. In fact, a new front porch could be one of the best “bang for the buck” remodeling schemes there is, because adding a porch costs much less than building an addition. In simple dollar terms, a porch could be a very good
