CCW Foundation Diploma 2021: Product and Spatial Design

Page 1

Hello, Welcome to our end-of-year catalogue. It features work produced by our Foundation students over the last year for their Final Major Project, combining pieces by onsite students with limited access to workshops and technicians due to social distancing, and work by our online learners located around the world. The students were supported by our ingenious staff and technicians, who created workshop video tutorials from the perspective of making at your kitchen table, helping students find alternative ways to make work. Going back into lockdown mid-course was a challenge. We were aware that many of our onsite students often had lack of access to materials, workspace, and even a device to attend class! We are so proud of the many ways our students have risen to the challenge, finding alternative routes to creativity in such difficult circumstances. When they look back at their accomplishments through the year, I hope they recognise their resilience, determination, and resourcefulness — qualities they can call on throughout their lives. It was such a pleasure working with the students of 2021, please enjoy looking at their wonderful work. Claire McCormack Programme Director

3D Product and Spatial Design The Design Pathway covers a wide range of subjects and practices. There is common ground in our interest in materials, in making, in problem solving, and in exploring the possibilities of what design can offer. Now, more than ever, design is needed to look at how we can shape a future that is more sustainable and can speak to the issues that are present in all our lives. The areas that we cover within 3D: Product and Spatial Design are: Spatial & Interior design, Architecture, Product design, Industrial design, Automotive design, Jewellery design, Furniture design, and design for footwear and accessories. Here we explore the meaning and significance that materials and forms have in our lives. Designers are driven by curiosity and this year's students demonstrate this through the work they have made here, challenging themselves in the most challenging of times.

Adaptation My project is about adapting to circumstances, being able to overcome abilities due to our lack of mobility. The product I made is a wearable gadget that extends, far more than we can reach, and retracts with the ability to grab or fit tools on the end and perform tasks.

Melody Akanji Watch 99 is a design for a space dedicated to observing. My project has e4plored textiles within architecture- and I was particularly inspired by a variety of nylon blends. It’s stretchy, translucent nature creates a sense of transience that I felt was suited to a space that relies on the experiential nature of looking. Situated at one of the highest points in London, Crystal Palace, Watch 99 offers visitors a 360 view across the whole of London whilst making this part of South London more attractive to visitors. This design also drew inspiration from traditional watchtowers.

Yasmin Akkus The project is to make the world a better place for people to live in; this has been the most significant influence in a personal pursuit of a career as an architect.

Dalal Alami- Lahjouji

The Restriction of Beauty We as human do not accept our physical beauty and we modify it to able to fit into this stereotype of what is “beautiful”. This space is meant to be created as way to mirror and raise awareness for the “restriction of beauty” and how the good looking physique nowadays is limited to one way of being. Thus is the reason the female human body in the middle is surrounded by wire restricting her movement and freedom, while still feeling uncomfortable and so self conscious in the fitting room, yet surrounded by mirrors that make her look and feel distorted.

Fahad Khalid Abdul Almannai

The Historical Library and Research Center of Bahrain The design aims to culturally add value to the public through the collection and display of local experiences.

The building consists of three floors with various departments, each containing a hollow column the public can speak their stories into. The stories are then recorded, fact-checked, and showcased for the public to listen to, experience, and reintegrate into the culture.

Radical Design BA Interior Design at Chelsea College of Arts My research into Paleofuture/Retrofuturism is looking into the future from the knowledge I hold today. The designers I have research designed their works from their perspective in the 60s/70s but I am excited to explore how the future would look like in my 2021 perspective

Tia Azzam Adapting To Climate The Nubian culture is located in Upper Egypt near the Nile River. The climate there is extremely dry desert climate with practically no rainfall. I will be designing a Nubian house from the interior and exterior. It is a residential house for a client that I will create. It will be located in Aswan by the Nile. Nubian houses are very simple, small, eco-friendly and colourful. But most all, they are designed in dome- like shapes. Nubian houses are made out of mud bricks since the material is not affected by heat. The domes over each house distribute the sun's heat inside the house to ensure that heat waves are not vertical, according to Nubian resident Mohamed Farid.

Made by Waste BA Interior Design at Chelsea College of Arts

“Made by Waste “Is a temporary, transportable design aimed to inform people of what recycled plastic, and clothes waste can be turned into, show its potential, and encourage citizens to recycle. The space, a shipping container, is divided into two rooms. Room 1 will be informative and show waste as is, while Room 2 will feel like an exhibition and will show the transformation of these materials.

Sara Bshennaty

The use of recycled plastic in my work is to raises awareness about the destructions and dangers plastic waste brings to marine life. The project started by collecting various forms of plastic and by using a heat press to create sheets of integrated plastic bits which were then sewn together to create one big abstract piece. A heat gun was used to create dentures, texture and dimension.

Natural Structures Urban Vertical Farm Inspired by my research and observations I made, I decided to focus on wasps nests and bee hives. These experiments helped me to bridge the gap between architecture and nature and both the hexagonal patterns and sweeping spiral shape influenced my final design. My final model is a vertical farm designed for city life with a moving facade on the outside to create a livable atmosphere for the decorative plants growing on the outside of the building.

Marco Campbell

Automotive & Transport Design The development behind this is focusing on the blend of a sport / aggressive seating position with the comfort of a upright naked bike (bike with limited fairings). Understanding why trends aren't present within the production world has reason, however that doesn't mean I shouldn't explore for myself and see if there is a way to use an abnormal trend.

Renshan Cao Revive BA Interior & Spatial design I redesigned an old community in my hometown, Chengdu. In this project, I designed three modern styled buildings above the original building in the community. These new buildings will serve as coffee & tea house, drama & music house and shopping area. The old communities in Chengdu are vanishing as the rapid city development and they are facing the threat of demolishing, so I decided to redesign them to bring vitality back. Another important manifesto in the design is that the new buildings and their functions should be accepted by both the youth and the elders.

Yuxin Chen

Immateriality Many things around us physically exist, yet are often overlooked as they cannot be substantially felt, like light and sound. For this project, I created a space that emphasizes the presence of these matters by stimulating the sensory experience of spectators through vivid colour, irregular walking surface and tinkling sounds created by hanging stained glass fragments.

Anran Chen

The birth of things BA Interior Design The aim is allow people to own experience of the factory, the purpose is to let a person when tasting coffee they can experience the happiness, and know every cup of coffee from beans to taste is not easy, my inspiration comes from, a cafe and movie "Charlie and the chocolate factory".

Shing Hin Adrian Choi

UAL CSM BA Product & Industrial Design The dilemma of existence within flies is subliminal to us humans. However, if I were to create a design where flies are instead useful to us, and that their purpose is as ethically responsible to the planet as much as all else, then shouldn’t we think of flies differently? After discovering about 'fatbergs', and biodiesel, how larvas are able to solve our chemical wastes, there might be hope that we are able to see flies differently. Argos is a device where cooks are able to decompose their leftover cooking oils into biodiesel with the help of flies

The Aurora Experience Interior Design at Chelsea College of Art and Design. The Aurora Borealis has been a dream of mine to witness, as I look at images and videos in awe, resembling a dream. The experience of witnessing the Aurora Borealis is something I cannot quite comprehend but I hope to invoke a similar feeling in others by enhancing and focusing on different aspects of the Aurorae such as colour and light. Next year I will be taking a gap year so I can develop and perfect my tattooing skills (Instagram: @holly.c.arts).

Luca Concilia

Hide away BA Product & Furniture Design I created a folding bed with rotating cupboards that stay at a constant 90 degrees on the underside of the bed frame.

Callum Cooper

Alternative Ornate Design Product Design The concept of exposing how products work in their design and attempting to make utilitarian “white goods” more interesting

Norah Dankwah

My project is based on Lebanon and how different historical events have affected Lebanon’s environment, the people and culture. The celebratory space is a dedication to refugees as their safe temporary stay, as well as an educational pavilion, on the ground floor, which gives an insight on the country's journey.

Yiyu Deng

Space saving I will design a piece of furniture that combines the functions of wardrobes, beds, desks and other furniture to make the small room larger and more convenient for people to hold parties and exercises. The inspiration comes from the boring feeling of staying in the dormitory for a long time during the lockdown.

Tavia Eborall

Triangles have psychological relevance and are perfect at translating organic matter into the three dimensional space. This is due to their ability to curve and provide strong reinforcement. Further triangles are aided by fine art references and have been proven to be the strongest shape for both architecture and providing information.

Nada Elsabbagh Modern Japanese restaurant in Egypt My design is based upon a modern Japanese restaurant in Egypt. It mixes both Japanese and Egyptian architecture and culture in a modern and futuristic way. I used the pagoda design in Japanese and interpreted in a modern way. I then used the old Egyptian columns that were used decades ago and also achieved my modern vision for it. The restaurant is based in the heart of Egypt with a view of the Giza pyramids which is great because Japanese restaurants are admired in Egypt and the view of the pyramids is a great way to enjoy the one of the wonders of the world while enjoying a drink.

Selin Eren

The Transistional Tunnel The transitional tunnel is a space where people could use while passing from one space to another. There is a contrast between the organic interior and the man-made exterior. The space in between the wooden pieces allow light to go through which makes the experience even more interesting and unique.

Chantal Faltas

Glass on the body LCF BA Fashion Jewellery A project that discusses several topics. I was inspired by designer brands and how they influence people to buy and wear their designs. Glass on the body is all about recycling old jewellery, nonexpensive dangerous materials that turned the design into a fashionable affordable piece worn by everyone. The idea of recycling isn’t really common in Egypt, it was a challenge to recycle old and broken jewellery, turn them into new pieces and change the idea you have about the culture. The dangerous materials are an introduction for a range of new materials that could be used in modern jewellery.

Danni Fan

Spatial Emotions My final design is a pavilion in Chengdu, China. It will be located in the central part of the city and act as a comfort space for people to escape the fast-paced city lifestyle. This design also focuses on using sunlight as the main source of lighting in the structure and using environmentally friendly materials as main sources. This project was inspired by my emotional experience with online learning this year, therefore I wanted to explore the connections between emotions and spatial design. The final goal was to design a positive space that is remembered as a calm and relaxing experience.

Mia Fawcett-Wolf

Interior & Spatial Design Horizon My aim is to sustainably design a Catwalk, inspired by architecture for a series of fashion capitals introduced into a culturally significant community setting. The London prototype is designed with the Barbican’s Brutalism in mind.

Violet Gausden

Eco Friendly Festival With festivals having been cancelled for so long now the idea of them seems so strange to us now it almost feeling like another world. I want to play on this idea by making a theme of a fantasy world that is fun and bright and feels almost surreal.

Mika Go

Jewellery Design “As an aspiring jewellery designer, I wanted to look at the influence of colours and how it could be worn on the body however I knew I couldn’t delve into it using my own opinions on colour so I created a questionnaire to collect ideas on how others perceive colour and why they choose to wear it in their own style. These rings are an experimentation of processes as well as an investigation of which materials worked the best. The glossy resin rings were a personal favourite as the translucency allowed light to shine through and reflect colour which played on an initial idea of using the body as a space to adorn, much like an exhibition.”

Selin Gurakan

Plates that slow down the speed of eating - Biomaterial I am interested in product and furniture design. By designing my FMP, I wanted to prevent people eating fast by designing slow-speed plates. I had lots of experimentation to achieve the best result for my design. I used biomaterial because I want my design to be sustainable and efficient.

Malak Hassanein

What Your Dog Needs My project is a pop-up shelter. I’ve designed a roaming structure that is a truck and that will move around Cairo, Egypt to raise awareness on stray dogs and their case in Egypt. The idea behind the truck is to give people a sense of how it would be to adopt a dog and what it would feel like to have one at home. The design is made using foam board, foam paper, clay and pictures printed on paper and then I took a picture of the final product and drew the front part of the truck.

The Holi Route BA Interior Design My FMP topic is about exploring both traditional Indian and modern design in a café. There are traditional patterns and modern furniture included in the café to create the right balance, as well a rooftop, where the people in the café will get a chance to celebrate Holi, an Indian festival, played with colours and water. This will allow the people in the café to understand and experience how to celebrate the Holi festival in India.

The Vault Pavilion Inspired by the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, the vault pavilion is designed to be an interactive space to educate people about the seeds. It has a collection of 10 seeds that keep changing simultaneously so there is always a new seed species to learn about.

Gitika Joganpally

My idea originated from a desire to create a home that breathes. I was also thinking about a familial escape away from home. With the intent of creating a space that allows smooth interaction between the inside and the outside to cultivate an experience that eases inhabitation and doesn’t let the user want to leave.

Yasemin Keceli

Boundaries I wanted to experiment with a space where you get to decide when you want your own personal space and can create your own boundary.

Hexagonal Homeless Cocoon

A cocoon is used by a caterpillar while it blooms into a butterfly. The cocoon hangs above the ground to protect itself from predators. Seeing the immense effect of COVID on homeless communities, I thought of a possible solution to allow homeless individuals self isolate or even have shelter at night. The Hexagonal Homeless Cocoon can be easily portable and be set up on trees in parks during the night. The product is also available for other consumers that wish to use it during camping or other recreational needs.

“Nest of Nature” BA Interior and Spatial Design My final motif is a biophilic design that focuses on the exteriors of the office building located in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The biophilic aspect of the design encourages a healthier environment as the economy continues to grow. The purpose of the final design is to provide a refreshing environment that both physically and mentally benefits the office workers. People are able to observe and engage with the nature that surrounds them from both inside and outside the building.

Yongmoo Lee

Space for sound The main building is designed to listen to precise music. Because there are plenty of acoustical factors all around the space. I want to prevent useless noise and excessive resonance, so that the user can enjoy comfortable listening and talking. The barrier between outside and inside is the air. The air between outside and inside is definitely different. Smells, temperature and wind can make me distinguish where is outside or inside. In terms of roof structure, it is located on the edge of outside and inside. The user can feel the nature even if it’s rainy. The speakers are in the edge of the architecture, so that it can spread sound easily to whole of the

Coralia Education Center Recent studies have revealed that 50% of the world's coral reefs have already been destroyed, and another 40% could be lost over the next 30 years. These numbers made a huge impact on my mind and that's why I decided to create an education center about sea life.

Eileen Lewis Vertical Urban Farming BA Interior and Spatial Design My project is about a vertical farm, located in the heart of Dubai’s desert. I wanted to design the structure by taking inspiration from the desert landscape. My starting point for this project was the Tribulus flower, which is the national flower of UAE, also the date palm tree, UAE’s national tree. I wanted the farm to emulate a source life in the desert, similar to an oasis. I also tried to focus on sustainability and green architecture for this project, looking at works of different designers such as Santiago Calatrava’s work and Dubai-based designer, Mouaz Abouzaid.

Jiangshan Li

Cyberpunk Cyberpunk, in my mind, is a world where people live in a world full of high technology but live like robots. People work and live mechanically, which leads to a barren mental world. So I wanted to make a transit station that would be located on the border between the suburbs and the city, providing people with shelter, food, and transportation. But it is not a refugee shelter, unlike a capsule hotel, this building is intended to provide a place of quiet reflection for people lost at the border, thus enriching their spiritual world.

Unusual Materials For the final major project, I chose unusual materials as my theme. In the field of furniture design. The most common materials are wood, metal, glass, fabric or leather. As a result, most of the furniture is just shape changed or different technology. What I want to change is not only the shape of the furniture, but also the main materials, which may give customers a sense of freshness and novelty. After some material tests, I finally decided to use cement as the main material for the furniture designed.

Henry Miles

This project aims to create an environment which promotes peace and a sense place which has no connotation to a particular religion or set of people. Instead the place will be built with natural features at the core. The space is an attempt to improve mental health within the urban environment along with creating community activities to bring people together. The archways not only create unique shadows but also represent diversity through repetition of a well known architectural form. The chosen materials are chosen based on their performance along with their aesthetic qualities. The result of these elements is a space which is peaceful and free of a defined subject it also allows for certain community activities to take place.

Lucca Muchmore

Smart Biosphere glasshouse My idea is a climate-controlled biosphere glasshouse which could be made from repeating, connective transparent (glass) units. The units have the potential to be increased or decreased in the amount to fit the appropriate size of the biosphere garden or plant. Giving the client control over the overall size of the dome creates the potential to be scaled up into different biosphere environments as well as fit the size of an ever growing plant .

Luke Newmarch

Ways of Weather I’ve always had a special interest in Moorish Architecture like the Alhambra (in Granada) and the Alcazaba(in Malaga). I’m fascinated by the sleek designs that beautifully incorporate water/reflection and greenery into the structure. With their designs as inspirations, I want to celebrate their culture/beauty and modernise their architecture into life fit for today.Throughout my time at CamberwellI’ve had some experiments using perforation (technique used in Moorish architecture) –in this project I want to experiment much more with this idea.

An Vu TextThe project ‘Out of Place’ aims to recreate the experience of dementia through architecture. The spatial configuration elevates our senses in attempt to replicate many of the challenges focusing on imbalance, memory loss and disorientation. The fluctuating floor plan is comprised of different translucency and heights aimed to create a feeling of ‘falling’ and ‘forgetting’, as a reminder of critical experiences suffered by those with dementia. The bold striking colours are layered to create a distorted effect that challenges users’ colour memory and navigation. Furthermore, affecting vision by blurring out the body of those nearby to replicate the challenges faced by patients that struggle to recognize individuals. Geometric Perspex sheets are positioned to correlate to the sun’s direction, where light distorts and merges colours to create a disorientated experience.

Temporary Disaster Relief Shelter I have designed a shelter for survivors of natural disasters and refugees to reside in for 6 months to 3 years. The shelter prioritises ease of set up, dismantling and transport: the walls fold inwards, allowing the shelter to completely collapse so it can be flat-packed and transported easily. Additionally, this design requires no tools or extra materials to set up and take down, making it easy for anyone to construct. Finally, the shelter also features a calming interior atmosphere to soothe its residents, and is large enough to house a family of three.

As the technology quickly developed, we stored lots of photographs and videos on our phones rather than print them out to make photobooks. This product is an ‘e-photobook’, it can be connected to our phones to help us use different ways to review those photos taken several months or years ago. An App is designed to set different functions about the product.

Oasis When a whale dies in the ocean, his body will eventually sink to the bottom of the sea. Biologists call this 'Whale fall'. The carcass of a whale can support a ciculatory system dominated by decomposers for a hundred years. In my opinion the Whale Fall is like an oasis on the barren seabed, providing nutrients for the surrounding life forms for a hundred years. Similarly in areas where knowledge is scarce, a library is like an oasis, providing nourishment for those who desire knowledge.

Simple BA Interior Design The overall shape of the building is a semi-open cylindrical building, the main body is the gallery on the second floor. Much of the construction material is white painted concrete, inspired by the personal style of architect Álvaro Siza. The main function of the building is to serve as an art gallery open to the public for free. The overall style is minimalist, without excessive decoration and color, which is used to highlight the beauty of the geometric shape itself.

Derin Zaimoglu Texture In life

There are tiny details that our eyes miss that actually change many things we see in our lives with little touches. One detail in particular is textures. Therefore I decided to take pictures of the textures of the human body, plants and my daily life to capture these tiny details. I focused on the human body, it came to me as the most different and most detailed. I compared it to a skateboard park using my research. After making drawings using my previous model works, I prepared my main model work and obtained a skateboard track from the detail parts of the texture of the human body.

Upcycled Products BA Product Industrial Design With this final project, I chose to create several concepts with the intention of helping two problems in the world of pollution, Landfill Waste & Construction Pollution. By creating a line of several upcycled products, this could increase the possibility of helping these problems, whilst also intending to create great products. All of these products are constructed by the same upcycled material of plastic waste & sand, which is heated in an extruder, and then pressed into any possible shape.

BKS House My project concept is to focus on composting with the consciousness of being responsible for our environment. I was obsessed with the idea that a interior space can be educational and influential at the same time, transforming the traditional food waste impressions and integrate it into innovative interior design. Functional Bokashi composting method along with a compost chute, conveyer belt, air filter, with biophilic garden design. Through my final design, people can directly see and feel the benefits and gain a positive experience through a sustainable action. BKS stands for Bokashi composting method.

Human & Nature With the advances of history , I would like to say more and more people pay attention to the natural environment . For example like me, I had attended a volunteer activity to help panda, doing the wild training project last year . So wanted to create a space that can have a communication between the human society and natural environment.

Haoyu Zhang Children Liberated This work is divided into five stages of life. For example when the child was born, it was very small, and when or in the womb, so the design of the first stage was very short and relatively closed. The second stage is childhood followed by adolescence. Adolescence is a one of the most rapid growth phase, also the mind and idea, so the steps of several layers of capacious, heralding the children are slowly grow up. My purpose is achieved if the children raise questions, such as, what is the life that I have ahead of me? Should I cherish this moment?

Bubble house This building of mine is about people and animals. There are simulation models of animals in various places in this building. People can learn about the beauty of nature by visiting the animal models in this building. We should protect these animals instead of hunting or hurting them. The entire building complex is composed of seven bubble houses, which means that we are protecting animals while also protecting ourselves.
