Preface/ 面對當代社會的開發慾望無窮時,在建設的過程 中,遺址常常無意間地消失在怪手之下,企圖藉 由建築的介入,思考當代建設需求,與遺址場域 之間的可能性。 In contemporary society , the endless desire of construction often make the ruins destroyed accidentally . By this opportunity , I want to rethink about the possibility of construction between the demand of the modern society and the site of ruins .

Phenomenon

01

Phenomenon Scattered state

The ruins site in Taiwan (till 2013 ) In Taiwan , Invisible ruins are scattered throughout everywhere. Until now , because the development project of architecture , we discover something interesting under the surface of land .

For example , because of the need of the daily life , these six ruin sites have been destroyed or even disappeared due to the construction .

01

Phenomenon disequilibrium

However , Between the need of construction and the long-term of archaeological research , there is always a conflict. These two are on different time axis . It′s common that the archaeology is following the architecture rule . Eventually , the archaeological always be neglected . it end up with the situation of damage or disappeared .

02

Site

Under the circumstance , I try to think differently. I temp to integrate the architecture and archaeology together . By intervention of the site , rethinking the possibility between the modern life and the field of ruins .

Site Current photos

The formation of HwaGang mountain is by the plate movement and river accumulation . It became a mound by the accumulation of the sand .

By seeing the pictures . we can identify that there is a natural slope .

Site analysis

03

Site analysis Topography

The water level drops, the river erosion base level drops, and coarse-grained sediments are deposited.

The sea surface dropped to its lowest point, which was 120 m away from the present. Meilun Mountain uplifted and developed red soil

The sea surface has risen, the climate has changed from dry and cold to warm and wet, and the frequency of extreme rainstorms has increased

The surface of the sea rose again to its highest point, the sediments became finer, and coral reefs grew.

the sea surface fell and stabilized, the Meilun fault formed and the Meilun platform began to rise. The water of Meilun Creek was blocked and a fault pool was formed

The Meilun platform continued to uplift, Meilun Creek changed to flow to the south, and the coastline moved eastward, causing a large amount of accumulation in the south.

03

Site analysis History

1913 Cemetry At 1913 , a lot of Japanese immigrate to Hualien Habor ( which is called “ Hualien city “now) related to the government’s policy . During that time , Hwa-Gang mountain became the only open space at Hualien Habor .

03

Site analysis History

1915 Urban planning At 1915, Upon the project of urban park, the Japanese government commence to eradicate the mountain and made it become a park for the citizen . the altitude is 10meter difference between now and past .

03

Site analysis History

1945 Baseball field , the military training space At 1945, In order to prevent the revolt of the aboriginal , Japanese government begin to enlighten them by sport activity. The government set up the first basketball team called “ Takasago basketball team “ which is assembled by all taiwanese. At this time , the Hwa-Gang mountain became the basketball field. It laid the foundation of the sport facility at the moment .

Site analysis History

1980 Radio Staion At 1980, beside the natural slope ,it’s used to be a radio station which play the import role of collecting and spreading the data in Hualien .

I find out that the highest level of mountain in 1915 which is 10 meter higher than current height . And the high after the eradication by Japanese government is 2 meter higher than current height .

From overlapping , I discover that some area will be possible unearthed in the future which is close to the surface now .

After the overlapping , I use the grid (2m x2m) system from archaeology as the frame . By identifying the ruin of radio structure and the pit have been excavated ,Leave daily trace of the contemporary society In advance of Leaving the space for the archaeological team to unearth in the future . Keeping the space much extensible .

05

Strategy

Base on the new map of new field space of Hwa-Gang mountain park I use the position have been excavated cleanly and the place used to be the radio station as the construction system which will be build up fast . the rest of the area will become the research site for archaeologist . by adding to the new sport space , educational space , and exhibition , make people participate in at daily life and feel changes of the ruin field. Even more, by unearthing the ruins and reappearing the object , making the “collective memory” much deeper and the citizen more connected with the land they grow up .

Area A : By using three concrete volume prop up the exhibition space upon , leave the open space for the lobby on the first floor . As entering the lobby , you can see the ground is lifted by the steel material which is much extensible for the excavation in the future . In the building , there is a vertical line through to the exhibition center space which is separated with the administrative space .

Strategy Phase 1 site plan

Come to the third floor , there is a open area for permanent exhibition, and three are three closed space for featured exhibition.By seeing the object from excavation ,make the people more connected with the ruin site.

With the 20cm height than the original ground line , make the people realize the relationship between the ground layer and the archaeological site . On the first floor , I intentionally configure the archaeology workshop which will be connected with the outdoor excavation space efficiently . the other side , there are six small room for research .
