Foreword Energy and Vaasa = EnergyVaasa

Once again Vaasa has the honour and pleasure of acting as the meeting place for the energy industry. Vaasa Energy Week will gather together some 2,000 experts from the field to exchange thoughts, ponder the future trends of the industry and to simply make the world a cleaner place to live. The event will offer a hefty portion of important issues for companies, decision-makers and anyone interested in the subject to mull over. Over the years, Vaasa has become a prime cluster of energy industries. And why not – after all, locally produced products and solutions are exported all over the world and we produce 30% of the whole country’s energy technology exports. The companies in the Vaasa region have established themselves as significant operators in the world’s energy technology market. The city has taken huge developmental strides, and the region’s dynamic business life has played a great role in this. The companies in the energy industry, which have acted as the engines of the region’s growth, have brought us affluence and well-being and strengthened our faith in the future. Vaasa Energy Week is an excellent tour de force demonstrating the power of cooperation in the Vaasa region. The success of such a top event, aimed at professionals, requires tremendous commitment and investment from all its organisers, and they have proven without a doubt that they can pull together towards a common goal. Together we are more! On behalf of the City of Vaasa, I wish all the attendees of the Vaasa Energy Week a productive and enjoyable week.

VAASA In a Nutshell

∫ Vaasa has the largest cluster of energy technology companies in the Nordic countries. ∫ Every third person you meet in the street is a student or school pupil; every fifth person studies at one of the universities. ∫ The population of Vaasa is growing rapidly and amounts at present to little more than 65,000 inhabitants. The whole region has around 110,000 inhabitants. ∫ Out of the population in the city 71% speak Finnish and 23% speak Swedish as their mother tongues. 6% of the inhabitants speak other native languages. ∫ People from more than 100 different countries live in Vaasa. ∫ The Kvarken archipelago off the coast of Vaasa is Finland’s only World Natural Heritage site included on the Unesco list of World Heritage sites. ∫ Vaasa has a long history; the city was founded already in 1606. ∫ In 1852 the whole city of Vaasa burned to the ground, but was rebuilt in 1862, seven kilometres from its original location. ∫ Vaasa is the sunniest city in Finland with an average of 1,900 sunshine hours per year.

Biogas Botnia BECAUSE YESTERDAY’S FUEL WON’T CHANGE BY ITSELF.

It all started a year ago with a project on promoting biogas production and utilization in our region. Now it is time for our final seminar on how these can be achieved in Österbotten, Finland and Västerbotten and Västernorrland in Sweden. This is compiled into a Roadmap with guidelines for biogas development in the Botniaregion. The roadmap is built up around opinions from politicians and biogas players in the region. The reason for promoting biogas is its positive effects on sustainable development. It increases the regional economy, it creates workplaces and it lowers the impact on the environment both locally in cities with better air and globally by less greenhouse gases. Since Biogas Botnia is a cross boarder project we have invited speakers from both Finland and Sweden to the seminar. Regional cases from both countries will be shown as well as experts sharing their knowledge about biogas. The value chain around biogas affects many parts in the society and that’s why you should come, no matter if you are a politician, citizen, professor, farmer or industry runner.

PLANT VISIT 11.00–11.45 Visit to Ab Stormossen Oy:s biogas plant outside Vaasa. Bus transportation from the city hall at 10:45.

Energy and Buildings THE SECOND TIME IS ALREADY A TRADITION.

This year’s Energy and Buildings seminar will dive into the topic of nearly zero-energy buildings, also called nZEB. Ambitious targets have been set to ensure that from 2020 all new buildings will be nZEB buildings, which means that they will all have to have a very high energy performance and that the energy used will be mostly covered by renewable resources.
