VAASA ENERGYWEEK 2016 MARCH 14-18, 2016 The Vaasa region is powered by EnergyVaasa, the largest energy cluster in the Nordic countries. The annually organized Vaasa EnergyWeek is the place where the cluster companies gather to network and make business. Vaasa EnergyWeek offers interesting events and forums for experts in both the public and private sectors. The international event is arranged for the fifth time in 2016. Now it grows with several new events. Gas Exchange is expanding the successful Wind Exchange concept into new areas of the energy scene. The big potential of natural and bio gas is also handled in the new Energy Law event. Energy & Buildings, one of the traditional seminars at the Vaasa EnergyWeek, offers now its participants an opportunity to discuss business and technology in a networking event in parallel with the expert seminar.

The mix of traditional and new events makes Vaasa EnergyWeek an even more interesting week of energy. Meet people with the same burning interest for energy as yourself, join discussions and expand your professional network to the next level. This is the place to be to get connected! All events are open for the public and free to attend. Make sure to register now: go to ENERGYWEEK.FI and guarantee your spot at the event.

Energy & Environment Seminar

All presentations held in Finnish

Every year since 2005 the Energy & Environment Seminar has been inviting decision makers, business representatives and researchers to discuss current and interesting energy topics. This year the seminar aims to initiate interaction between public and private decision makers by offering an interesting mix of speakers representing both parties. THEME I: HOW CAN WE ACHIEVE A MODEL WHERE BIO FUEL IS MORE COST EFFECTIVE THAN FOSSIL FUEL FOR ENERGY PRODUCTION?

THEME II: THE ENERGY SYSTEMS OF THE FUTURE, RENEWABLE ENERGY PRODUCTION AND ENERGY STORAGE

Instead of importing fossil fuels the natural choice should be to produce biodiesel from domestic raw materials. Using wood chips should be more cost effective than using coal. How can we make domestic fuel the number one option and move towards carbon neutral energy production? During the first part of the E&E Seminar political decision makers and the field’s leading companies and organisations give their view on these issues.

Renewable energy solutions are often distributed solutions. Wind farms multiply and even single house owners are switching to small scale solar. The increased amount of renewable energy solutions – producing seasonal energy dependent on weather conditions – is creating a growing demand for energy storage. How can this be done in an economically feasible way? The most commendable experts from the academic world and the private sector address these issues in the second part of E&E Seminar.

WIND & SOLAR SEMINAR: FUTURE ENERGY SOURCES, 16 MARCH 2016. NEW POSSIBILITIES AND CHALLENGES

UPDATE YOUR PERSPECTIVE

According to the Finnish energy roadmap, future energy markets will be increasingly based on renewable energy sources. The growing amount of renewables will create new possibilities and challenges – both from a technical and economical point of view. Solar and wind power, being inherently irregular, demand more attention when it comes to energy balancing and production estimates.

The Wind & Solar Seminar provides updated and necessary information for all players in the fields of energy production, technology, marketing and financing. The conference day begins with issues regarding future prospects related to new technical solutions and global sustainable development.

Wind & Solar Seminar is arranged by Vaasa Energy Institute in association with Merinova.

Other topics include environmental outlook and technical development/challenges from both a solar and wind power perspective and Horizon 2020 funding possibilities.

Energy Law

LAW AND POLICY OF EU NATURAL GAS MARKETS – STATE OF PLAY AND FUTURE TRENDS Natural gas markets in Finland and the EU are going through major changes. In the EU, external dependency on Russia (as a source) and dependency on Ukraine (as a transit country) are making headlines with the on-going Russia – Ukraine dispute. At the same time, the EU natural gas markets are progressing towards a more competitive model. Both issues are addressed through new regulatory measures. In Finland, the new natural gas market act will end the era of monopolization. Gas markets are opening

up and the new regulatory framework attempts to create scope for competition. The Vaasa Energy Week session, organized by University of Helsinki law school (Vaasa unit), will examine ongoing and future changes in the regulatory framework for natural gas markets in the European Union and Finland. Speakers include practitioners, academics and public officials from European organisations.

Gas Exchange Seminar

GAS EXCHANGE SEMINAR REVOLUTION HAS BEGUN

VAASA PROVIDES SOLUTIONS ON LAND AND AT SEA

The global gas revolution – oil replaced by natural gas – will be the main topic of the Gas Exchange Seminar. For example LNG is becoming an environmentally and economically viable option. When it comes to smallscale power generation and transport, the transition to methane gas can only be sustainable if it includes a reasonable share of biogas.

In Vaasa international companies are working with a wide range of gas solutions for the world market providing solutions throughout the small to mid scale LNG chain, that bring LNG to consumers both on land and at sea. The Vaasa region also has local biogas production and several development projects to showcase. Drop by and learn more about how political goals and the world gas market affects your business.

Energy & Buildings Seminar

ENERGY EFFICIENT RENOVATIONS It is important to ensure that our new buildings are energy efficient, but the real challenge lies within the already built building stock. 90% of the existing buildings in the EU will still be standing and occupied in the year 2050. The current building stock accounts for 40% of the primary energy demand today. Renovation can cut this energy usage by as much as 80%. By using new technology and methods for renovation we can save a lot of energy, and the most sustainable form of energy is saved energy.

Attend this year’s Energy and Buildings seminar to learn more regarding energy efficient renovations. Speakers at the seminar: Eleni Kontonasiou - the Buildings Performance Institute Europe, Kristina Mjörnell - SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden, Dr. Tobias Waltjen - Österreichisches Institut für Baubiologie und Bauökologie, Yrsa Cronhjort - Aalto University, and more.

The seminar is arranged by Novia University of Applied Sciences, Vaasa Region Development Company, Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences, Tampere University of Technology (TUT), Umeå University/TFE, Umeå University/Education, SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden and Narvik University College. KEYNOTE SPEAKERS
