Minestrone a highly nutritious & high fibre winter warmer, Serves 6 what you need: 50ml olive oil 1 large onion, peeled & diced 1 large carrot, peeled & diced 1 stick celery, washed & diced 2 cloves garlic peeled and finely grated 2 potatoes, peeled & diced 2 tomatoes, deseeded & diced 1 cup green cabbage, finely shredded ½ cup raw Borlotti beans, pre soaked overnight & pre cooked 30 minutes or 1 x 440g can Borlotti beans, drained & rinsed½ cup raw Cannellini beans, pre soaked overnight & pre cooked 30
minutes or 1 x 440g can Cannellini beans, drained & rinsed 1 x 400g can diced tomatoes 1 litre vegetable or chicken stock 2 bay leaves handful of fresh oregano & handful of flat leaf parsley 1 cup of sliced green beans and/or green peas (seasonal) to taste : fresh parmesan cheese, ground black pepper, Extra virgin Olive oil What to do In a large pot place olive oil, on a medium heat sauté onion, carrot, celery, garlic for 5 minutes, stirring continually. Add fresh tomatoes, potatoes, pre cooked beans, canned tomatoes, stock & bay leaves, herbs, then bring to the boil for 10 minutes with lid on. Turn down to a simmer for 20 minutes, with lid off, stirring occasionally. Add cooked
cabbage, green beans or peas simmer further 5-10 minutes lid off. Serve hot with freshly grated parmesan cheese, ground black pepper & a drizzle of Extra virgin olive oil. Enjoy with some crusty bread.

Sam & Caroline Madikian Ps Phil said, “work with what’s in your hand right now!” The Madikian’s run an auto repair business in Mona Vale and regularly see people who are facing financial hardship. They became involved in repairing cars for free to help people in our community who lacked transport. When this idea gained promotion on A Current Affair they were contacted by a man from Dee Why who’s mother had died and left him a car. He felt that his Mum would have wanted her car to go to someone in need. The car was fixed by Sam so it could be donated to a single mum through C3 Church, who was really struggling to get around and transport her children to daily activities. This lady was so blessed by our show of generosity that she started to come to C3 and is now a thriving member of the congregation. Together Sam and Caroline have given away two cars already and have another three in preparation for donation. In addition to this, Caroline has a heart to care for the less fortunate in our community and
S E O ER currently runs a food service in Mona Vale. She cooks restaurant quality meals from food donated by local businesses, which she offers for free to the homeless and financially struggling right here on the Northern Beaches. Between the 3 kitchens in Manly, Dee Why and Mona Vale they serve over 100 meals per week. Sam and Caroline were inspired to begin these acts of kindness by Ps Phil who exhorts us to “work with what’s in our hands right now” and Caroline says it just comes easy to them in that way. Helping others has also translated into blessing in their business, which has been recognised by the Northern Beaches Business Awards when Sam and Caroline were awarded the number one prize for their category. They particularly need help from panel beaters and car detailers.
Alicia Martin Alicia and her family run the Food Within Program that offers families discounted food in return for helping at their farm (it’s a barter system). Alicia also runs training sessions to teach families how to cook and eat healthy meals. C3 Church donated $23,000 towards the organization at Love Sydney this year and following the Presence Conference Alicia and her family have now become regular members of C3 Silverwater. Update from Alicia: Thanks C3 Church for your generous support. After Presence a gentleman came forward to
sponsor us financially and through this we have been able to employ someone 15 hours per week over the next 12 months. This has greatly helped us with carrying out our workload. Before this happened I was staying up until 1am in the morning to do these tasks as I was running classes or delivering food during the day. The same gentleman who sponsored us financially is also now doing volunteer work for us and helping us with administration work at our Penrith office. Also a wonderful man from the Presence Conference had the courage to contact us as he needed help for his family, but was feeling very ashamed. We have now put them in touch with CAP to help with their budget, and I am pleased to say that we have put them into our ‘Wings 2 Carry U’ program, where he will not be given hand-outs, but will work for the food that we will provide to him and his family. This allows him to keep his self-respect. From our food deliveries, bartering and back to basic classes, we are now helping 160 people. Neil also has made the commitment to come to church with me and our two boys, Wayne and Brad, which is great. Some weeks are very draining on us as a family, but we now know that if we continue to have faith the hard days will become easier. We have just received some exciting news from Centrepay, the agent for Centrelink. Neil and I are trying to become the first food agent for Centrepay. This is where people would receive food and money as part of their welfare payments. We have submitted a report to the State Manager of Centrepay and he is very interested in how we allow people to work from their budget and pay what they can afford. This is what we are working on now, and soon we will be able to help so many more families who are struggling to provide healthy food.

You need to experience a quick “WIN”, this will encourage you and inspire you to smash your debt! Know exactly how much surplus you have to pay off your debts after writing down a detailed realistic budget. Then list all you debts in order of smallest to largest. It doesn’t matter about the interest rate. Smallest to largest! You need to experience a quick “WIN”, this will encourage you and inspire you to smash your debt! Work out the very minimum you can pay each creditor. You need to be offering something even if it is only $5 a week! Write a letter to every creditor with your offer. By writing to them you will not be bullied into an agreement you cannot keep over the phone, also you are buying some time to get the snowball rolling! Ask them to stop the interest (if you don’t ASK you will never give the creditor an opportunity to say YES!). As long as you are paying them something no matter how small they will have to accept. They will demand more but stand your ground and tell them what you ACTUALLY have to offer!
The snowball will have the full impact in time! Communication is crucial. If you have $50 for debt repayment and you have 5 creditors they all get $10 until the first one is paid off. As my little girl Harlyn develops physically and emotionally I have also loved watching her little spirit grow in getting to know Jesus. One of my favourite parts of the day is praying with her when she is sad or before a sleep that she would feel Jesus’ peace. This morning as I left for work I asked if she would like to pray for our day, she squealed “OK” and ran to me arms open to pray to Jesus. That’s a good start to the day. Live an example to your family of one who finds peace in the Lord.

The pressures to organise our homes, keep on top of when our kids need to be where, keep the business afloat, buy that house, sell that house, eat better, get out of debt, find space to holiday, find time for family and keep up our online social status can make for a bustling life. In fact just reading this is enough to make you anxious! Breath, relax and read on ... it gets better. After working for 5 years with children and young people in the foster care sector I have witnessed the extreme effect of stress on the family unit. As a husband and a father I desire my family and home to be full of Gods peace, that our life together would be one that is light and easy. And that too is my prayer for you. So, here are some thoughts to help bring peace in to your family and home. Regularly encounter peace.

here is no greater feeling than the Holy Spirit coming into a home and resting on a family. We all encounter stress so it’s important to create regular opportunities for peace. Our life with Christ is exactly that, a Life WITH God. We are not meant to do this alone and will not last if we try. The best way to encounter peace is to encounter Him. He is our Prince of Peace.
Make room for life, joy and rest.

hen working in the out of home care field, I quickly became an advocate for self care. We are no good to anyone when we ourselves are at our end. Ensure that you have regular breaks, a once a year holiday may just not cut it. God created a day of rest and then took pleasure in it. We must prioritize rest. There is a time to set aside the burdens of the day, there is a time to turn off the phone and be together as family. Don’t switch off FROM your family; make them apart of your rest. Let your kids see you light and having fun. Their tiny antennae pick up everything! Seeing Mum and Dad at peace says to them all is well, all is safe”.
