The NorthWest Crossing Saturday Farmers Market turns double-digits this year, and in that time, the market has blossomed from a humble little gathering, into the largest farmers market in Central Oregon.

We couldn’t feel more blessed to celebrate this amazing milestone with each and every one of you.

Since the beginning, the market has connected families with farmers, artisans and small business owners, allowing neighbors to meet one another and develop a closer connection to their food sources. The backbone of our market is the enthusiastic and hard-working slate of farmers and vendors that serve up fresh produce, meats, cheeses, eggs, flowers, hand-crafted items and tasty food and drink each week. In addition to great shopping, our market stage features talented local and regional entertainers, offering an eclectic array of music that’s sure to have your toes tappin’. Taste of the Season RECIPE OF THE WEEK Our popular Taste of the Season Recipe of the Week is back with 14 delicious recipe ideas on how to use market bounty in new and unexpected ways. Each week, a new recipe featuring ingredients from market vendors will be featured on our website (www.nwxfarmersmarket.com) and in our weekly market mail (subscribe on our website!). You can even pick up a copy of the recipe at our Information Booth each week. Here’s a sneak peek at a recipe that we can’t wait to try this summer…

FARMERS MARKET PAPPARDELLE (Courtesy of Epicurious.com) YIELD: 6 servings, TOTAL TIME: 30 minutes

ACCOMPANIMENT: Shavings of Parmesan made with vegetable peeler

INGREDIENTS

SPECIAL EQUIPMENT: A good vegetable peeler, preferably V- or U-shaped

❒❒ 3 garlic cloves, minced ❒❒ 3 tablespoons Sherry vinegar or white wine vinegar ❒❒ 1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for drizzling ❒❒ 1 1/2 pounds multicolored cherry tomatoes, halved (quartered if large) ❒❒ 3 ears corn, shucked ❒❒ 1 1/2 pounds medium zucchini ❒❒ 8 to 9 ounces dried egg pappardelle or dried egg fettuccine ❒❒ 1/4 pound sugar snap peas, strings discarded and peas halved diagonally ❒❒ 1/2 cup thinly sliced red onion (optional) ❒❒ 1 cup small basil leaves, torn if large ❒❒ 1/2 cup mint leaves ❒❒ 1/3 cup snipped chives

PREPARATION Bring a 6- to 8-quart pot of well-salted water to a boil.

Meanwhile, mince and mash garlic to a paste with 1/2 teaspoon salt, then stir together with vinegar, oil, and 1 teaspoon salt in a large bowl. Add tomatoes and stir gently, then set aside.

Cook corn in boiling water until tender, 4-6 minutes, then remove with tongs and cool.

While corn cools, peel lengthwise ribbons from 1 side of a zucchini with vegetable peeler into another bowl, stopping when you get to seedy core. Turn zucchini a quarter-turn, then peel more ribbons, stopping at core.

Repeat on remaining 2 sides of zucchini (you will end up with rectangular-shaped cores). Reserve cores for another use (such as soup).

Cut corn from cobs; add corn to tomatoes.

Cook pasta according to package directions until al dente.

Just before pasta is done, stir in zucchini ribbons and snap peas and cook 15 seconds. Drain pasta and vegetables together in a large colander and add to tomato mixture with onion (if using), then toss gently.

Add herbs and toss gently again.

We’ve made a great catch!

Long time bend resident and musician, Tom Scott, is the music teacher at Bear Creek Elementary School. Having long studied the music of Zimbabwe, Mr. Scott has been teaching his elementary school students the art and culture of zimbabwean marimba, for years. His groups will include a mix of students and adult players, as the streets come alive with the sounds of Africa!

Nomads is five area musicians who share a love and a passion for middle eastern grooves, balkan hooks, and meditteranean flavored sounds, dancing, and culture.

Located in the intersection of NW Crossing Drive, you’ll find our Community Hub… your place for information and everything market related.

Find out who is performing, what activities are available for children, what special programming is being offered, and get any questions you may have answered. Our Community Hub is kindly staffed by volunteer neighbors from Discovery Park Lodge.

As you wander our NorthWest Crossing Saturday Farmers Market you will bump into the vibrance of our three resident busking performers. The first station features Lino and his world guitar fusion blend, the second station features revolving buskers, and the third station features youth musicians from Joe Schulte's String Theory class. The market is proud to support these young musicians! Please support all of our buskers by making donations to them if you enjoy their market sounds.

LOCAL FOOD PARTNERS SPOTLIGHT Central Oregon Locavore is a local, community based non-profit established in 2009, located near downtown Bend, serving both food producers and consumers throughout Central Oregon. Locavore operates a year-round indoor farmer’s marketplace which features freshly harvested produce, organic grass-fed meats, free-range eggs, local honey, locally made value added products such as salsa, sauces, and many environmentally-conscious products for sustainable living.

In addition to the marketplace, Locavore also operates a number of programs including Farm Kids!

Willing Workers on Local Farms, Edible Adventure Crew, Small Farmer Support Program, and farm-to-table dinners such as Meet Your Farmer Dinner Series and Farm to Table Dinners and Events.

These programs serve to connect and educate community members to the local foodscape of Central Oregon and provide a platform for support and celebration.

The High Desert Food and Farm Alliance (HDFFA) is dedicated to supporting a community based food system in Central Oregon.

Again this year, HDFFA will collect fresh food donations at the market to help augment non-perishable food items in the pantry system.

Currently, there is a push by the Oregon Food Bank to increase the number of fresh foods available at regional food banks and to partner pantries by 50% over the next five years.

In Central Oregon, HDFFA is partnering with NeighborImpact, to help drive this change. Among their many programs, they operate the food distribution center for over thirty food pantries and shelves in the region. The collection point at the NorthWest Crossing Saturday Farmers Market will also serve as a location for backyard gardeners to bring their extra garden vegetables.

Kids' y a D AT THE MARKET

August 18th August 18th is Kids’ Day at the Farmers Market! The day kicks off with the return of the popular NorthWest Crossing Kids Crit, presented by Umpqua Bank and Hutch’s Bicycles, with support from COPA. This is our 11th year of this exciting race, open to kids 11 and under.

Participation is free but pre-registration is required at the NorthWest Crossing Umpqua Bank store. The course is around the uniquely round Compass Park, located in the heart of NorthWest Crossing. Participants are grouped by age and prizes will be awarded for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers in each category. Free bike safety checks and helmet fittings are provided by Hutch’s Bicycles and free ice cream from Umpqua Bank provides a very cool and yummy finish.

After the races, head down the street to the market to check out…. aerial artists, face painters, bounce houses and many other kids activities. The Bluefish Dental Team will be hosting fun games and prizes. COPA will be giving away sweet kid-sized market bags filled with yummy and nutritious ways to enjoy a healthy snack. And The Center will be on hand to provide concussion awareness and prevention information to parents of active kids. Bring your kiddos’ bike helmets for a free safety fitting!

Kids Food Bank First Interstate proudly unveils Kids’ Food Bank— children donate food bucks to those in need.

Few things nourish the soul more than the gift of giving. It is in this spirit that First Interstate Bank, the NorthWest Crossing Farmers Market, and High Desert Food & Farm Alliance are teaming up to help fight hunger.

Between June 15 and September 14, children 17 and younger who open a new minor savings account at any First Interstate Bank location in Bend will receive a $10 donation bucks for fresh veggies and produce. Children can experience the powerful act of paying it forward by taking their bucks to the NorthWest Crossing Farmers Market and presenting it to staff at the High Desert Food & Farm Alliance (HDFFA) booth.

HDFFA staff will use these bucks to buy fresh produce, delivering items weekly to the NeighborImpact Food Bank. This seemingly small gesture will provide nourishment for the one in five Central Oregonians who are combatting food scarcity and hunger.

Ten years ago, the good folks at West Bend Property Company invested in the health and vitality of the greater NorthWest Crossing neighborhood by collaborating with C3 Events on the launching of a brand new Saturday Farmers Market. Over the span of the past decade, this event has evolved into a communitybuilding force for the good of all of Bend.

Over the span of the market’s history, we have enjoyed dreaming up new ways of bringing the farm or the ranch directly onto the streets. This has included pony rides, petting zoos, freshly hatched baby ostriches, chickens in chicken coops, and more.

No ordinary event, the NorthWest Crossing Saturday Farmers Market boasts the most robust offering of weekly produce, specialty foods, meats and dairy, cut flowers, fine art, and healthy living products, in all of Central Oregon. But even more than that, this market is always innovating new ways for its attendees to pause and connect with one another, to be inspired by beauty, and the many artful ways that this might express itself.

Toward this end, we are pleased to highlight some of the wonder-filled new additions to the market for the summer of 2018 season!

This year, just to the south of the Food Court and Music Stage, we are delighted to introduce Taps Mobile Pub, serving all of your favorite local craft beverages. Get to know your local vineyards at their lovely monthly local wine featurette. We're bringing market attendees both a taste of the Vineyard as well as an excellent array of local and beyond craft beers!

Visit this enchanting beverage garden area to experience the art of Central Oregon beers, and the glorious grapes grown right here in Central Oregon.

SHENANIGANS FOR THE SENSES

Over the years, the market has enjoyed spontaneous visits from stilt walkers, giant puppets, and even a traveling circus. This year every week your eyes will be served up an aesthetic feast of beauty with aerial arts, from three different local presenters- returning veterans, Silks Rising, Tula Movement Arts, & Central Oregon Aerial Arts. Turning a corner you may experience a flash mob, children’s theatre arts performers in character, and divine face painting. Local bagpiper, Ernie Geiger, will announce the beginning of the market each week with a brief pipe and stroll through the market, and then will take his spot to serenade throughout the market.

Several new musical buskers will be on hand to turn up the joy, as you wander the market.

Tag It Forward Coffee operates a mobile coffee operation through which youth are provided with ample barista training, job-readiness training and paid work experience (minimum wage and up).
