Healthcare infrastructure projects are booming in British Columbia and across Western Canada.
It’s an exciting time to be part of this era of transformation and innovation, but it’s not without its challenges.
In recent years supply chain disruptions and material price escalation put project timelines and budgets in jeopardy. As project teams continue to adapt from planning through to procurement, they are faced with yet another challenge that also stems, in part, from the pandemic. The critical shortage of doctors, nurses, and healthcare workers. The impact is being felt across the country making it an important time to examine how the built environment along with new tools and technologies can optimize human resources.
Join us at the Canadian Institute’s 7th Annual Forum on Healthcare Infrastructure, Western Canada on June 20-21, 2024, in Vancouver. Our esteemed faculty of thought leaders in capital planning, design and construction will lead timely discussions on how to plan and deliver healthcare facilities that will better serve clinicians and patients in future.
Attend this solution-oriented forum to:

Andrew Haas, MPA, PMP, Executive Director, Capital Planning and Major Capital Projects, Saskatchewan Health Authority
Jacqueline Per, Executive Director, Patient Experience and Chief Nursing and Allied Health Officer, Fraser Health Authority
Dr. Jose Francois, Chief Medical Officer, Shared Health Manitoba
There is a severe shortage of doctors, nurses, and other skilled healthcare professionals in Canada. The strain of the pandemic exacerbated an already existing problem by leaving many in the healthcare community burnout and opting to leave the profession or opt for early retirement.
It’s a critical time to sort through the complexities of a serious and growing concern for patient care and healthcare professionals if we hope to recruit those needed for the number of healthcare facilities currently in flight. Furthermore, the hospitals themselves needs to be designed and equipped with the technology to help, not hinder clinical responsibilities.
• Collaborating and partnering with educational institutions to ensure new and existing facilities will have the number of doctors, nurses and healthcare staff needed in the years to come
» Implementing work integrated models of learning in healthcare
» Assessing how spaces could be designed differently to encourage a learning environment
• Exploring creative ideas to optimize space and support staff
» Incorporating childcare and programming into healthcare facilities
» Perspectives on key elements for respite spaces, offices etc.
» Is there an opportunity to create more flex spaces
• Examining how new models of care could better serve patients, optimize human resources and curb burnout
» Utilizing virtual care and enhancing home care to alleviate the pressure on hospitals by reducing the number of visits

Examining Current Challenges and Opportunities for the Use of Mass Timber and Hybrid Systems in Healthcare
microphone-alt Juan J. Cruz Martinez, Director, Implementation Slocan Site Redevelopment Project, BC Children’s Hospital
Robert Jackson, Partner, Fast + Epp
Danielle Marx, North Zone IPC Senior Consultant, Alberta Health Services
In British Columbia there is a provincial mandate to use mass timber to construct new, public buildings. The move away from steel and concrete is expected to reduce carbon emissions and lead to overall economic benefits for the region. However, the use of mass timber, especially in healthcare facilities is now without its own unique challenges.
This panel will explore industry trends, anticipated benefits, and key considerations for use of mass timber in healthcare projects.
Points of discussion include:
• Understanding what mass timber is and why the province and other jurisdictions are opting to use it in different types of buildings
• Exploring IPAC considerations for the use of mass timber and how this has influenced where it is used in healthcare buildings to date
» Examining examples of how mass timber is being used in hospitals and assessing the potential use in low acuity settings
• Key structural and design considerations when planning a mass timber or hybrid structure
» Structural spacing
» Vibration and movement of the materials
• Assessing whether the current market is equipped to deliver complex mass timber healthcare projects
» Identifying how planning and delivery will differ from infrastructure built with traditional materials
