“a company with an extremely bright future” The Telegraph (2012)

In 2013, is 5 years young. In the last 18 months we’ve tried to take our ideas far and wide across the UK and to nurture dialogue with partners to bring to life some of the most curious ideas in science. The 2012 Hexagon Season was a busy year for us and we’re really excited to introduce for 2013. This year we’re concentrating on making work from our current base, Norwich. We’re proud to be working on our major new production for 2013 with the Norfolk and Norwich Festival, before touring in 2014. We’re working out of a new office in Norwich and we’re running some local artist development projects out of The Garage as part of a new initiative, From developing the work in Norwich, we’ll be heading out on tour nationally with

We’ll also be developing our new piece and continuing to grow projects like afield.

We’ve also just accepted a new commission from LIFT and Imagine 2020 and have named this piece Finally we have a new pilot scheme called

This sees us working with Guardian Science & Sense About Science to partner local theatres around the UK with top-class Universities and local artists. Scientists and artists will work with their theatres in an exchange which we hope will kickstart lost conversations. Within the company, we’ve appointed six creative associates, company members who have worked with us, in some cases, from the very beginning. These associates interweave and strengthen all the work we’re doing this year. We’re always learning from the example of those that inspire us: those who find new ways of making work, with partners who share a sense of progression and belief in core principles. Be it in a moving ambulance, an end-on space, a town square or a theatre foyer, is also about testing the third culture that curious directive operates within: the liminal space between art and science. Come and knock on our door, watch a show, observe a rehearsal or get in touch with a question. www.curiousdirective.com @c_directive

“Even though the words art and science are on everyone’s lips no-one knows where it’s going…are we heading towards a third culture?... The most extraordinary works of art and momentous discoveries in science have emerged from people seeing connections where they don’t seem to exist.“

“…Instead of seeing art and science as sort of static nouns, I see them more as an approach to knowledge… so it’s an active methodology.”

“I think your creativity, your brain or soul, whatever; you need to be interested in many things. And all these things eventually converge to one place and you find some kind of resonance…both the artist and the scientist are in quest of beauty.”

“An understanding of the natural world and what’s in it is not only a source of curiosity but of fulfilment.”

“…even if we’re just going into a gallery to escape the rain, art reminds us that our own unfortunate circumstances are not all we have — that we really are all in this together.”

A WAY OF SEEING OUR BROCHURE As we’re a non-building based theatre company, we’re approaching our brochure like a building-based company might approach their venue: 1. We give you the nano version of what the pieces are on the right hand side of the page - #form_area/of/science_space_audience/adjective 2. We then talk to you about what happens in the show and why it interests us

3. We’ve put down who we’re working with on it 4. We tell you how long it is, where it is, when it is and how to get a ticket Come in. Look around. We hope you enjoy what you see.

A response to “The Great Transition”. Island Mass is an installation, a hymn about an imagined future where the crowds begin to tumble into the sea. It tells the story using your shadow, your opinions, your thoughts and your imagination for what the world will look like post-austerity. A world where a collective consciousness for climate change will rise again, along with the sea, along with CO2 levels and along with mankind’s thirst for growth. An intimate installation with dynamic graphic design, sound and an experience which aims to create a dialogue about a consciousness in transition. The piece will respond to you, in a little and ever inventive way each year on the date you experienced it between 2013 and 2050. Commissioned by LIFT as part of IMAGINE 2020 in day of events co-curated with Artsadmin, responding to the New Economics Foundation report The Great Transition.
