One More Than Nine: 10 Years of Hope Through Art

Celebrating the 10th Anniversary of Blossoms of Hope’s Theme Invitational Exhibit Features art and written words that incorporate the number 10. Sponsored by Blossoms of Hope of Howard County, the Howard County Poetry and Literature Society, Volunteer Center Serving Howard County, and Columbia Art Center. Proceeds benefit the Claudia Mayer/Tina Broccolino Cancer Resource Center of Howard County General Hospital. Reception: Friday, April 12, 6-8pm Juror awards presented at 6:30pm

Featuring more than 25 works created by high school students from Baltimore City, and Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Howard and Montgomery counties. Congressman John P. Sarbanes will present the awards. There will be one winner and two honorable mentions announced. The winning selection will be exhibited in the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. Honorable mentions will be displayed in the offices of Congressman Sarbanes. This exhibit marks the sixth time Columbia Art Center has hosted the event. Akimbo Improv Comedy Team Enjoy an evening with Akimbo, an improv comedy team from Baltimore. Akimbo performs the old-school improv format known as the Harold and seeks to intrigue audiences as much as make them laugh. Every performance is entirely improvised using only a single word suggested by the audience, combined with that strange phenomenon called improv group mind. Admission: $10/person (fundraiser for Little Patuxent Review)

Patuxent Wildlife Research Center Film and Discussion With Allan F. O’Connell Discover the groundbreaking work of the largest biological science center within the Department of the Interior — the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center. This research center is the home to some of the nation’s best scientists, who focus on challenges facing wildlife, past and present. Their continued strides include research and work with Bengal tigers, studies that led to Rachel Carson’s book Silent Spring, and maintaining the largest flock of whooping cranes that led to the species’ recovery. Research manager Allan O’Connell will present a film and lead a discussion on the institution’s history and achievements.

Street Portraits From the Heart With Photographer Ben Cricchi Through Ben’s photography, witness an artistic journey that began in Paris, continued on to China and finally leads to his current work in Baltimore. His photographs are mostly street and portrait images that blend sensitive observation with gritty realism. Ben served as a photographer for the Baltimore City Paper. His work has garnered fine art recognition with exhibits in New York and Europe.

Paint Office Night Art Parties Rescue For ages 16 and older

Pick a personal and meaningful design to recreate with your friends at your very own Paint Night party! The selected design will be taught step-by-step by one of Columbia Art Center’s instructors. Great for birthdays or bridal events! Art instruction runs two hours, plus one hour for setup, refreshments and cleanup. Early reservations are recommended. Columbia Art Center is the ideal venue for companies to hold creative team-building painting activities in a relaxing atmosphere. The workshops can be held any day of the week, depending on availability. A canvas, easel, brushes, paints and smocks/aprons are provided for your team. TEAM-BUILDING PAINTING ACTIVITIES Individual Paintings: Each participant paints their own painting with the help of the instructor’s step-by-step instruction. One-Step, Two-Step Painting: Paint one step, then move to a different seat to continue to the next step.

Collaborative Painting: Everyone in the group contributes to a large four-panel painting (4-foot by 3-foot). One collaborative painting is recommended for every 10 painters at the event. These works of art are ideal for displaying in the office. Mystery Masterpiece: Our instructor takes you through the painting process step-by-step. The fun twist with this project is that no one knows what the painting will look like until it is completed.

PRINTMAKING For ages 10-14 With Sarah Matthews Explore the ancient art of printmaking and learn techniques to create cards, custom notebooks and countless other creations with decorated papers that can be used throughout the year! All of the basics of pottery will be covered, including clay preparation, throwing techniques and glazing, as well as opportunities for handbuilding. Learn how to make vases, mugs, bowls and plates, as well as other forms according to ability and desire. Clay, use of tools, glazing and firing are included. MONTHLY TWEEN WRITING CLUB For ages 8-11 With Faye McCray NEW! Do you have a story to tell? Join author Faye McCray in learning the basics of storytelling, including how to develop dynamic characters, exciting plots and engaging dialogue. Writers will also learn how to navigate getting “stuck,� how to provide useful feedback, and how to revise. ADULTS For ages 17 and older

CERAMICS NOTE: All spring 2019 enrolled ceramics students can use the open studio to practice their skills for free. The studio is available when classes are not in session. See listing of available open studio hours posted in the Ceramics Studio. Ceramics classes include use of studio equipment, all bisque firings, glazes and glaze firings for up to 20-25 medium-sized pieces (approximately 200 cubic inches each) per session, e.g. 25 pieces for a 10-week session, 20 pieces for an eight-week session, etc. Students who wish to produce more than 25 medium pieces each session will be charged an additional firing fee per cubic inch. Individual pieces that exceed 1,500 cubic inches in size are charged a separate firing fee. Individual tools and clay are not included. No production work, please. LOW FIRE: LET’S DISH! HANDBUILT DINNERWARE With Christina McCleary All levels of clay experience welcome. Explore various ways to create amazing dinnerware. Everything from plates, bowls and mugs to candlesticks and coffee pots will be explored in this class. Students will use paper and foam templates, bisque molds, stamps, underglazes and slips to create a personalized dinnerware. With the use of low-fire earthenware clay, you will discover a rainbow of colors and surface decorations unique to the low-fire process. INTRODUCTION TO THE WHEEL With Christina McCleary For beginners and those with some clay experience. Learn the basics of working on the potter’s wheel. The skills of wedging and centering clay and glazing will be covered. Simple thrown forms will be crafted into beautiful vases, cups and bowls that you will decorate and glaze. Supplies are available for purchase on the first day of class. Thursdays, April 11-May 30, 6:30-9pm (eight sessions) $220 CA members/Columbia Cardholders $230 non-members INTERMEDIATE WHEEL With Carren Clarke This intermediate-level class pushes you beyond your current proficiency level and comfort zone. Practice and hone your skills and gain a greater confidence to move on to more challenging projects. Refine your techniques and explore your own voice in clay. Mondays, April 8-June 17, 6:30-9pm (eight sessions) No class on May 27 $220 CA members/Columbia Cardholders $230 non-members ADVANCED WHEEL With Carren Clarke Expand and strengthen your throwing skills while developing your own personal style in clay. Basic shapes will be transformed into more complex forms. Sophisticated surface decoration will be explored using advanced glazing techniques, oxide and wax design elements, and simple brushwork with slips. Mondays, April 29-June 17, 10am-12:30pm (seven sessions) No class on May 27 $210 CA members/Columbia Cardholders $220 non-members WHEEL AND HANDBUILDING With Nancy McIntosh This class is for both beginner and intermediate students. Students combine wheel-throwing and on- and off-the-wheel altering of forms. As you expand and refine your throwing skills, learn how to incorporate a variety of handbuilding techniques to transform your works into more complex forms. ADVANCED CERAMICS With Nancy McIntosh Designed as an independent study for continuing and advanced students who want to pursue ongoing independent projects. There will be periodic faculty critiques, but no instruction. Students must be experienced with the studio equipment, clay, glaze use and cleanup processes. In this workshop, you will critically examine your own photographs and those of fellow students in a supportive and encouraging environment to better understand your strengths and areas for improvement. People are literally fascinated by them, as seen by their popularity during the royal weddings. A fascinator is worn on occasions where hats are customary, sometimes serving as an evening accessory, when it may be called a cocktail hat. Bigger than a barrette, modern fascinators are commonly made with feathers, flowers and beads and attached to the hair by a comb, headband or clip. Class Policies & Procedures INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY In the event of inclement weather, Columbia Art Center will update its phone message at 410-730-0075 by 8am regarding facility closings and class cancellations. This information is also available on Columbia Association’s Facebook page and website.

DISCOUNTS Columbia Art Center programs are offered at two rates: one for those with CA memberships or Columbia Cards, and the other for non-members. Non-members who live on CA-assessed property may obtain a free Columbia Card to receive the member rate for Art Center programs. To obtain a card, visit the Customer and Member Service Center (6310 Hillside Court). Columbia Cardholders are also eligible for discounts at pools and other facilities. Access to CA facilities and programs may be denied to a Columbia resident (member or non-member) whose property is the subject of a covenant violation referred to the Architectural Resource Committee for action.

SUPPLIES Adult students are responsible for purchasing their own materials for most classes. Refer to course description for clarification or call Columbia Art Center for additional information. A supply list for adult classes will be supplied upon registration.

CANCELLATION AND TUITION REFUNDS Columbia Art Center reserves the right to cancel any class for any reason. In the event Columbia Art Center must cancel a class, refund of tuition is guaranteed. Tuition cannot be credited, prorated or refunded after the first day of class. No prorated tuitions will be given; full tuition is required. If you have any questions about the content or focus of the class, please contact Columbia Art Center before the class begins.

ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY Columbia Art Center has a zero tolerance policy for class disruption and aggression toward staff, instructors, students and visitors. Any type of aggressive behavior may be grounds for removal from Columbia Art Center. Columbia Art Center reserves the right to suspend or terminate class participation and usage of Columbia Art Center for inappropriate or abusive behavior or class disruption. No credits or refunds will be granted.

Columbia Art Center rentals are available in our art galleries, studio rooms and Japanese garden. Enjoy a unique setting filled with original art for your next event.

Art displays change regularly. All rental rates include use of kitchen and restrooms. Limited number of tables and chairs are available for use. Renters are required to set up and clean rented studios. Catering is not provided by Columbia Art Center.
