Enjoy an evening with Akimbo, an improv comedy team from Baltimore. Akimbo performs the old-school improv format known as the Harold and seeks to intrigue audiences as much as make them laugh. Every performance is entirely improvised using only a single word suggested by the audience, combined with that strange, sweet phenomenon called improv group mind.

Gee’s Bend Photographs Linda Day Clark

Linda Day Clark, a nationally recognized visual artist and scholar, will present her Gee’s Bend photographs and share her unique 16-year journey with the Quilters of Gee’s Bend. According to the New York Times, the quilts of Gee’s Bend are “some of the most miraculous works of modern art America has produced.” Day Clark will offer insight into the remote Alabama community that plays such an important role in America’s culture.

This powerful feature-length film captures the rich oral histories of an aging and diminishing population of African-Americans who grew up in the Mason/Dixon border area of Baltimore, and who lived through the era of legal segregation. The narratives document the relevant lives of individuals who attended segregated schools and/or desegregation before and following the 1954 Supreme Court Brown v. Board of Education ruling. The film’s executive director and producer is Dr. Gary A. Homana, and the film is co-directed and co-produced by Dr. Morna McNulty and Dr. F Campbell Jones.

Columbia Art Center is the ideal venue for companies to hold creative team-building painting activities in a relaxing atmosphere. The workshops can be held any day of the week depending on availability. A canvas, easel, brushes, paints and smocks/aprons are provided for your team. TEAM-BUILDING PAINTING ACTIVITIES Individual Paintings: Each participant paints their own painting with the help of the instructor’s step-by-step instruction. One-Step, Two-Step Painting: Paint one step, then move to a different seat to continue to the next step. Collaborative Painting: Everyone in the group contributes to a large four-panel painting (4-foot by 3-foot). One collaborative painting is recommended for every 10 painters at the event. These works of art are ideal for displaying in the office. Mystery Masterpiece: Our instructor takes you through the painting process step-by-step. The fun twist with this project is that no one knows what the painting will look like until it is completed.

homeschool C L A S S E S EXPLORING CREATIVITY THROUGH THE SEVEN ELEMENTS OF ART For ages 6-9 With Chelsea Bork Students will explore elements of art through drawing, watercolor, acrylic, and clay. In this fun three-month course, they will utilize line, color, shape, texture and form to create complete and diverse projects. At the end of the six classes, students choose two of their favorite masterpieces to display at the art gallery during a reception for parents and children celebrating all of their creativity and hard work. KIDPRENEURS WORKSHOP For ages 8-11 With Marlene Jackson This workshop is designed to encourage children to become thriving “kidpreneurs” and launch their own business products and services. The workshop will encourage young, business-minded leaders to creatively embrace their entrepreneurial spirit, lead confidently and think critically. Through interactive fun and business computer art projects, kidpreneurs build confidence and learn real life skills as they creatively write, edit, design and produce business marketing materials. Participants will come away from the workshop with a business portfolio and an opportunity to participate in Market Day, where they will sell their creative business products and services. PRINTMAKING For ages 10-14 With Sarah Matthews Explore the ancient art of printmaking and learn techniques to create cards, custom notebooks and countless other creations with decorated papers that can be used throughout the year! All of the basics of pottery, including clay preparation, throwing techniques and glazing, will be covered, as well as opportunities for handbuilding. Learn how to make vases, mugs, bowls and plates, as well as other forms according to ability and desire. Clay, use of tools, glazing and firing are included. CERAMICS NOTE: All winter 2019 enrolled ceramics students can use the open studio to practice their skills for free. The studio is available when classes are not in session. See listing of available open studio hours posted in the Ceramics Studio. Ceramics classes include use of studio equipment, all bisque firings, glazes and glaze firings for up to 20-25 medium-sized pieces (approximately 200 cubic inches each) per session, e.g. 25 pieces for a 10-week session, 20 pieces for an eight-week session, etc. Students who wish to produce more than 25 medium pieces each session will be charged an additional firing fee per cubic inch. Individual pieces that exceed 1,500 cubic inches in size are charged a separate firing fee. Individual tools and clay are not included. No production work, please.

LOW-FIRE LET’S DISH! HANDBUILT DINNERWARE All levels of clay experience welcome. Explore various ways to create amazing dinnerware. Everything from plates, bowls and mugs to candlesticks and coffee pots will be explored in this class. Using the wheel as a springboard for ideas and process, participants in this five-week class experiment with altering the round form, handbuilding and other methods of construction to realize their artistic curiosities. Demonstrations include throwing component parts, cutting and reassembling forms off the original axis, stacking and nesting pieces, glaze discussion and more. This class is open to artists with all skill levels, but basic centering and throwing skills are recommended. How do I make that into a good composition?” This class will break down the landscape into manageable pieces, discuss how to layer your way from background to foreground, and introduce a wide variety of techniques to paint the landscape effectively. We will also discuss painting outdoors – “plein air.” Composition, the importance of values, and lessons on mixing your colors will be covered. DISCOUNTS Columbia Art Center programs are offered at two rates: one for those with CA memberships or Columbia Cards, and the other for non-members. Non-members who live on CA-assessed property may obtain a free Columbia Card to receive the member rate for Art Center programs. To obtain a card, visit the Customer and Member Service Center (6310 Hillside Court). Columbia Cardholders are also eligible for discounts at pools and other facilities. Access to CA facilities and programs may be denied to a Columbia resident (member or non-member) whose property is the subject of a covenant violation referred to the Architectural Resource Committee for action.

In connection with my participation in Columbia Association’s program (the “Program”), I understand and acknowledge the nature and extent of the activities that will be involved in the Program and assume the risk inherent in such activities on behalf of myself. RENTAL RATES

Columbia Art Center rentals are available in our art galleries, studio rooms and Japanese garden. Enjoy a unique setting filled with original art for your next event.

Art displays change regularly. All rental rates include use of kitchen and restrooms. Limited number of tables and chairs are available for use. Renters are required to set up and clean rented studios. Catering is not provided by Columbia Art Center. Please call Columbia Art Center at 410-730-0075 for more information or to reserve your rental. *Rentals in galleries are contingent on type of show on exhibit.
