YES TO CONSCIOUS AND TARGETED ART We now know the answer to the question 'whether the chicken or the egg came first. Similarly, we know that the dead ends in societies originate from the dead ends of their constituent individuals. Therefore, the best societies need better minds that are not formed with violence, uprisings and revolutions but rather with peace and positive emotions, which accompany the desire of man for Knowledge. The Truth is directly connected to Knowledge anyway. It is not, however, connected to power, which always tends to be totalitarian by nature and intention... Democracy is neither urban, nor centrist, allied, socialist, leftist and communist (people’s). It is not monarchical or presidential. It is neither Christian nor Islamic; it is not direct or indirect... Democracy does not need an adjective to describe it! Democracy is an autonomous social system that is based on Justice which in the pursuit of Truth solves peacefully any differences that may arise... Democracy and Capitalism or Democracy and Communism are incompatible because they have used and still use violence. Most of the time extensive violence... The real issue is not in which world we don’t want to live, but which world we do want to share. Democracy is Life and requires, in this order, true relationships with ourselves, our neighbors and our societies... It is more than obvious that we need a better society. A civil society that is participatory and truly democratic which will result peacefully from radical reforms rather than violently from revolutions thus constitutionally, securing the real needs of all citizens rather than the greed and the profiteering interests of the few... Therefore, YES to Friendship through Art... YES to Culture, Social Justice, and Prosperity of all citizens... YES to conscious and targeted Art... Prof. Dr. Takis Alexiou, Chairman CA4S-AthensArt
THE HISTORY OF PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL OF CORFU The first step for institutionalization the chronic psychiatric patients of Corfu, started in the year 1836 which was, at that time, under the British occupation. To cover the costs of installation a fundraising campaign was obtained with the sum of 600 pounds. But only in 1838 and in particular the July 4 began operation. The management of the psychiatric hospital was firstly assigned to the doctor of the English Guard in Corfu. As such, it operated until Ionian Islands were united with Greece, in the year 1864, when Greek government assumed all operation and maintenance costs thereof. In 1956 the organization was reformed and renamed as the "Corfu Psychiatric Hospital" with the simultaneous formation of two psychiatric clinics. In 1959 began the operation of Radiology and Laboratory of Microbiology 1960, which operated until the late nineties. Following the European Regulation 815 of 1984, the Day Hospital, Short Care Unit and Training Center (KEPE) was created. In 1986 the hospital joined the National Mental Health Service and was divided into three Psychiatric Clinics with 360 beds. In 1999 the "Psychargos" program was launched, under which were formed and operated in Corfu, with the hospital's supervision, two psychiatric hostels for 24 patients, two training workshops for 45 mentally ill, and a Mental Health Institution. In 2006, after a long process of transformation and full implementation of "Psychargos", the Psychiatric Hospital of Corfu passed into history, giving way to the "Community Mental Health Services Network of Corfu". The major goal of the closure of the Asylum was reached on October 10, 2006, the day celebrated as World Day for Mental Health.

CRISTINA ALTOBELLI Cristina Altobelli began her non professional artistic experience in 2000 painting with oil colours, temperas and. She studied painting with teachers who were students of Zotti and Saetti at Venice’s Art Academy. She is now studying painting techniques and the theory of visual perception. She exposed her works in a solo and a collective exhibition in Pescara in 2008. ... her journey through informal art reveals to be full of light as it tends to a mirroring white in which she literally wants to enter and she does it getting dirty of the pictorial impasto and giving the canvases a sensation of complete implication. These are the shores where Cristina Altobelli arrives. Magic signs that want to represent the reality she has lived and interpreted. Where there is much more than sentiment… images wrapped in mystery…. (Leo Strozzieri).

GABRIELE ARMELLINI Gabriele Armellini was born at Castelletto di Branduzzo, Italy, on February 6, 1950. He lives and works at Voghera. The elegant and accurate research that Gabriele Armellini makes through the medium of painting has to do with time… investigated in its phenomenological dimension. Beyond and above the figure, in his paintings, the dynamic and changing shape, captures the conscious interaction with the world, … what is described is life itself, its never-ending proceeding forward… The progression and the color overlaying depict the vibration internal to the movements of life…these fragments of life are depicted with ease and passion by a deep and searching sight. The work of this artist has therefore an important humanism that … allows the investigation to go beyond the camouflage need, without ever losing grip to the real. The climate produced… is a climate of a profound meditation, the black background is a sign of intimacy without fear, of readiness to uncovering without hesitation. The vivid and bright colors produce the sensation of a clear and distinct vision, the precipitated material of an experience that has come to the end. (Silvia Petronici – gavagai)

All the things are in constantly evolving. Every human being, awakening to his mission contributes to this process through his life. One of my contributions is through art. The real work is that of the "soul". The others are just means that we choose.

GIANNI BAILO Gianni Bailo was born in 1941 at Sale near Alessandria, Italy, where he currently lives and works. Dental technician, after his retirement, he followed his early vocation for art, using the mean iron as his elective material. He shapes his ferrous creatures, as if he were using wax to model his dental sculptures. In every work you can capture the feeling of being immersed in a clear space of signs and gestures, driven by an almost continuous research towards a new visual language. In his structures what is more evident is the quality of the creative impulse - a move and bend of the iron which is deliberately deprived of any rational control. The result is a succession of sinuous and smooth shapes, punctuated by an harmonic endless movement. In Bailo - as in the leading members of the informal art - we witness the creation of a code of personal writing, where every line traced by the iron is significant in itself, hinting at the same time to something symbolic and magical as the never-ending alphabets "of Emilio Scanavino. ANGELA CONSOLI Angela Consoli was born at Locorotondo, Italy, on January 2, 1973. She is a conceptual and mix-media. After obtaining a BA in Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bari, she develops her research on revitalizing obsolete objects - such as residue of old doors, little blinds, drawers, plane bits of wood – that once belonged to someone’s everyday life. She recovers these ‘containers of memory’ near places strongly connected to country tradition of Apulia - places that had been dismissed in modern era – ancient farms, ‘trulli’ and ‘lamie’. She throws in again these ‘fragments of life’ through alchemy with other objects of common use and the use of plaster, acrylic painting, photos, verbal messages, video-installations, ceramics, tar and shreds of the same matter. She exposed her works in solo and collective exhibitions in Italy and abroad. She works as artistic events organizer. Since 2005 she has been organizing and directing ‘Porta Mediterraneo’ – an international project consisting in international artistic research days. She is being represented by GARD Art Gallery since 2009 . She lives and works at Valle d’Itria.

Well, listen. What I do has nothing to do with hidden meanings. I am myshelf and this is the way I interact with nature. It means with life. Nothing more. There I rest, I find answers. There, I find painting. Colors and shapes. Shapes and colors ... I imagine, there are more people who want to discuss through this code of truth and simplicity. Because, as we said, painting equals life. Life is everywhere. Wherever you look, there is life.

HENGAMEH FARAHMAND Hengameh Farahmand was born at Shiraz, Iran, in1962. She lives and works in Hamburg, Germany. The most striking element in Hengameh’s paintings is her passion for vivid colours and oriental motives, which she explores through the use of a wide range of unique mixed media techniques. She often explores themes of love, aspiration, dreams and compassion, often blurring the boundaries between imagination and reality. The surfaces of her paintings are also a very important aspect of her work; the marks and textures and the play of light onto metallic surfaces brings a third dimension to works which often leave viewers transfixed. Hengameh has exhibited her work widely with a prominent exhibition at the Open Air Gallery in Berlin (2008). Her latest exhibition in Athens (AthensArt-2010) was one of her greatest experiences regarding international art exhibitions.

With color, space and personal symbolism I search for a certain feeling, deeply rooted emotions, not bounded to culture, religion or race, but universal and recognizable for every human being. I hope the spectator finds something of himself in my work. My search is not spectacular or shocking, I am searching in the world of silence. Paintings and objects showing large color fields, with small figurative elements in it, like a leaf, a jacket, or a child. Approximate formed squares and circles are connected with thin lines to each other or to the space outside the painting or object. Glass is a material that gives me the opportunity to enter light literally into the work. Paper looks vulnerable and transient. These materials are becoming more and more important in my work.

MARIA KAVVOU-VLATAKI Maria Kavvou-Vlataki brings to life a love affair with paint as she abandons herself to the sensuous and sensual nature of her medium. Nude figures bathed in mood and mystery, flowers brilliantly exploding into bloom and glowing visions of natural beauty emerge in these wondrous creations. In a style of both abstract and expressionist realism, Kavvou-Vlataki finds freedom in paint, fearlessly exploring new textures, methods and subjects in watercolors on paper, or acrylic on canvas, with occasional strategic touches of charcoal and mixed media. “My goal is to follow the painting where it leads me! she exclaims. Maria Kavvou-Vlataki recently renewed her career in painting with a triumphant return after an extended absence spent focusing on family and her work as a guide at various historical archeological sites and museums. Born in Greece on the island of Crete, the artist studied at the Privet Fine Arts School in Crete and Paros islands and now divides her time between studios on the islands of Crete and Paros.

MAGDALENA KOURKOULOS Magdalena Kourkoulos was born in Germany in 1951. When she was 18, after finishing high school, she moved to Colonia, where she studied and get married. She has two children. She has traveled a lot with her husband, George Kourkoulos, at the Greek historic places and the Greek islands. She is learning Greek and the last 8 years she is visiting every summer Corfu. She and her husband had the idea of twinning the Municipality of Corfu with the Municipality of Troinstorf, near Bonne, where they live in winter. She has worked in education for 34 years in Bonne. The last 25 years she is dealing with naïve painting, she is taking photos of Corfu and Greece and often collects her thoughts in poetic form. Since 2004 she suddenly changed her style and painted “furiously” her first abstracted work just with her hands. In her work Magdalena tries to feel the life again and expresses views of eternity, capturing the moment. She considers her work as a presentation of life itself. Life is an interaction field where people put their signs and leave their marks. She often uses findings from the beach, which underline her intention to create a representation, an image of the existence. After all, is there any better way to perform the meaning of human destiny than the sea? From 2008 she is a member of the Corfu Art Union.

It is, for example, in the act of looking at nature and how it can be reused for patterns plastically always subjective and cultural beauty. It is this mystery that drives the work of Jose Americo in his ongoing research materials. The main feature of his sculptures and wall table is in the mix of types of wood (mastic, for example) with metallic elements (carbon steel, among others). The visual result of the dialogue is marked by the dominance of abstraction and the curved line. Various compositions generally appear in subtle organic shapes. The artist also makes jewelry. Work as studies of larger works, constructed from pieces of wood found on the banks of the Parana River and the shaping of the steel... (Oscar D’Ambrosio).

GABRIELA Z. PICKETT -MOSIER Gabriela Z. Pickett-Mosier is a native of Mexico City (March 20, 1969). Coming from a long line of artists, she studied art at Wright State University in the United States. Her life is full of experiences that have allowed her to develop her talent as an artist. Being born in Mexico she developed a fondness for what most people would label as morbid images. The horrendous reality of war and political instability that Mexicans endured from 1810 to the late1930’s inspired many great artists. Some wanted to use their artistic abilities to attest to the brutal living conditions of every day life in Mexico. Others used their art to express their political opinions. When Gabriela paints or creates sculptures she uses a fusion of influences from her native country, drawing on the influence of Jose Maria Velasco and his landscapes, Posada and his morbid sense of humor, Diego Rivera and his desire to show us the harsh reality of life experienced by the Mexican peasants oppressed by corrupt governments, and Frieda Kahlo, who painted from the heart communicating a sense of physical and psychological anguish. Gabriela aims at raising awareness regarding the living conditions of the Mexican indigenous people who have been marginalized by economic realities and social discrimination. As an activist, Gabriela uses her art as a venue for social commentary in the hope that indigenous people are not forgotten. In an era where Zapatistas have put down their guns and use words as a weapon against tyranny, she uses her art to compliment the messages of peace and respect for human rights emanating from the jungles of Mexico. Her landscapes are memories of her childhood recorded for posterity. As urbanization takes over the Mexican landscape, Gabriela wants to show the world the beauty of Mexico’s countryside before it fades away.

IRENE SALLEY Irene Salley was born in Guadeloupe, a small, tropical island in the French West Indies on November 11, 1946. She realized her passion for art when she moved to Paris in 1974. Her ties to France and the post-impressionist movement that began there can be seen in her spontaneous, emotional style. Like the artists who have influenced her, Salley is in love with color and motion. Each painting dances with excitement and explores the boundaries between what is seen and what is imagined to be. Salley is not concerned with capturing the physical details of the image before her. Rather, she is intent on expressing the emotions those images convey. She applies her paint in rhythm to the moods within and around her, painting in giant, surging brush strokes or short, rapid swipes of the painter's knife. She is, in fact, in love with the process of painting almost as much as she is with the subjects and stories of her art. She has participated in numerous exhibitions: 9th Annual Regional Juried Exhibition at the Thomas Center's Main GalleryGainesville-Florida-August 2009, Art for A Cause- Sebastian Ferrero FoundationGainesville-Florida- November 5th 2009, Melrose bay gallery Open Air PaintingMelrose-Florida-April 2011, Jwvartists- art show- Charlotte NC- May 2011- Nov. 2011 She lives and works at Gainesville, U.S.A.

Right from the beginning I have always been interested in translating emotions into a visual language, to give feelings form. Thematically the work moves between opposite poles: the personal, things I have experienced, seen, imagined or dreamt; and the political, where secondary source material generates primary images. The underlying subject throughout all my work could best be described with the word CONFLICT. This can be of a political nature or equally inspired by autobiographical events.

DEVDAS (DARREN) UDAIYAN Devdas (Darren) Udaiyan was born in India. He is an artist and portraitist, living and working in Cambridge, U.K. My main role is a facilitator between the philosophical works of Deleuze and Guattari, semiotic theory, the bridge between syllogistic logic and symbolic logic and modality as per the self defined axioms of my own artistic confines. So in other words I am a bridge, ‘a neutral’ between syllogisms and symbolisms, between vernacular art and conceptual art (as practised by Sol de Witt, On Kawara and Joseph Kosuth in the late 60-70s). I am currently extending this bridge to capture the theorems outlined by Edgeworth Johnstone’s and Charles Thomson’s figurative paintings. So in other words, you can refer to me as 'The Neutralist' or my art as Neutralic in nature. Coupled with these various dyadic or binary relations, the media I use also has a dualistic/multiplistic nature. I used to be a pure oil painter but I am shifting my technique and consciousness in parallel with the theorems that I am engaging in on a daily basis. I am mixing digital art, traditional art, oil/acrylic/pigment painting and modern curatorial and archival practise to disseminate a series of dualisms or neutral standpoints that I am attempting to question. So Neutralic Tradigitalism could be a word you'll be hearing in the near future... maybe? In order to aid me in this study I am appropriating the motif of ‘Jones’ (Jonathan Jones to be precise) as an indicator of ‘equivalence’. Or to maybe put it another way, I am exploring a visual take on bibliometrics to trace inter-relationships between images, theorems, citations and content.
