As a fundamentally high speed game and exciting sport, with rapid action, quick quarters and frequent scoring attempts, the design of the Perth Basketball stadium sought to underpin these features of this international sport and create a piece of architecture that would not only enhance the viewers experience of the game, but also have the game enhance the architecture. Using the design process the stadiums internal formal layout features soaring lines and dramatic heights and spaces generated by extreme angles. These lines shapes and forms were directly inspired by the way players can soar through the air especially at a professional level, these spaces also serve to create an atmosphere of speed and pace in which spectators are excited to watch the game. On a functional level the angles of seating layout have been chosen as to minimize any seat in the stadium having a poor view, and even from the farthest corner over 90% of the court is visible a feature most stadiums lack. The facade of the building takes its inspiration from the Signal Box in Basel Switzerland by Herzog and Demuron where pieces of copper plate are twisted to create a 3 dimensional effect on a mostly at surface. The stadium grows on this and instead of copper utilizes translucent Polycarbonate which at night are lit by LEDS allowing a rapid light show to take place.

The proposed structure for the Perth basketball stadium utilizes a combination of space frame geometries and the combination of a warren and Howe truss, this combined with columns designed to be reinforced double lattice should provide extreme level of strength whilst still remaining a light weight structure

Despite the recent lack of rainfall in Perth it is impossible to ignore the importance of drainage from a roof structure. The multi technology roof incorporated into the Perth basketball stadium includes gutters through each tooth, this combined with a slight tilt on each tooth allows all rainwater to be caught into the rainwater catchment tanks further increasing the buildings sustainability.

When designing the Basketball stadium with a desire for a tight form factor, the issue as to how to run services throughout the building became apparent. For this the structure of the building has been designed around the idea of having a central services spine in the building. The spine runs along the roof connecting the cooling towers and solar panels to the under seat services room as well as the exterior services room. Another tunnel runs under the stadium and this has been specifically located for hydraulic services connecting all rooms with running water supplies.

The decision to locate a services room outdoors and underground was born out of the desire to have the machinery upgraded, after researching many stadiums and buildings it was found that devices such as chillers can only be changed and moved via crane which is very difficult to do whilst still inside. Logically the chosen placement overcomes this

With the stated intention of having an environmentally sustainable and low energy consumption building being taken by the client the roof of Perth Basketball stadium has been designed in a sawtooth configuration to generate maximum Pv cell surface area. On top of this the Panels have been designed to hinge from the top angling themselves mechanically in accordance to the seasonal angle of the sun to ensure that maximum efficiency is achieved at all times of the year, maximum efficiency is achieved when the sun is at 90 degrees to the panel.

Being a Saw tooth the south facing side of the roof utilizes a double glazing system to allow natural light into the building throughout the day, this further decreases energy usage as artificial lighting is only required at night.

The facade of the proposed building is perhaps one of the most striking aspects of the Perth basketball stadiums design. Constructed from Form cast Polycarbonate with a 50% degree of translucency and laced with LEDS along each blade the building has the ability to completely light up and glow at night in any color shape or pattern that it needs to depict. Inspired by Herzog and Demerons Signal box in Basel Switzerland the blades will also be twisted at certain points to create an optical illusion that the building appears to have more depth that it actually does.

The design of the stadium and the way the facade has been developed also helps assist in the buildings goal to achieve a high environmental rating, the majority of the building mass is on the east and west sides, absorbing heat, the combination of double glazing an air gap and the louvered facade further eliminate exterior heat keeping the being stable, the blades are also angled to prevent direct east west sunlight which can be harsh and intense for the occupants. The south facing skylights and the dynamic solar panels on the roof that act as a shader in summer due to their angle also assist this. The Materials proposed for use in the basketball stadium are Polished concrete oors, lightly white painted bamboo wood on the stair cases, glass on the walls poly carbonate on the leaning walls and poly carbonate on the facade, these combined materials aim to enhance the atmosphere of the building providing a very reďŹ ned feeling slowing all energy to be focused on the basketball game
