Design Project The brief for the proposed project is the design of a medium sized basketball stadium on a hypothetical site in Perth. The exact location of the site is not important but the features of it are outlined in the diagram below. The site is in the metropolitan area and hence has access to power, water and sewerage connections. The ground is gently sloping down from the access road with a gradient of approximately 1 in 20 (see contours). The boundary of the site measures 350m x 200m with the longer side running parallel to the street and set back 10m from it. The soil is sandy and stable.

The court is to be of standard FIBA dimensions (28m long x 15m wide with a 8m min clear height) and be surrounded by tiered seating for approximately 2000 spectators. The court should have a 4m run-off area all around it. It is to include change rooms and toilets for players and toilets for spectators (in accordance with the Building Code of Australia), two store rooms are to be provided. Parking for spectators can be assumed to be off site and ticketing will occur on the perimeter wall of the site. There are to be at least two points of entry to the stadium and wheelchair access to some of the viewing areas.

The design of the building should explore repetitive faรงade and structural elements. The longer axis of the building is to run east/west (parallel to the road). The major support areas such as change rooms, storage and service rooms can be located below the seating and plant rooms should generally be accessible from outside the building.

The building is to be enclosed completely on all sides and will be strictly climate controlled with a fully air-conditioned ventilation system. The stadium should strive for suitable light levels through glazed elements and/or skylights but these and any other openings will require solar protection in accordance with passive design principles. To supplement natural light during the day and to illuminate the space at night an appropriate level of artificial lighting would also be provided. Rainfall is to be collected and utilised on site. This stormwater may be for internal use where it will be incorporated with other hydraulic services, or used externally on the landscaping.

The provision of spaces for associated mechanical, hydraulic and electrical plant and equipment must be incorporated.

During the lecture series the various consultants will indicate what is required for the services.

Detailed programme 1.1 Main Stadium Central court with tiered seating for approx. 2000 spectators.

Special requirements: Air conditioned but also with natural ventilation. No visual obstructions from structural supports. Min clear height 8m.

1.2 CafĂŠ and shop Area: 40 sqm (x min 3m high) Function: Small shop selling basketball paraphernalia and drinks/snacks (only open during games).

Other: No food preparation or kitchen. Only fridges for food/drinks. Near one of the entry points.

Special requirements: Hard wearing, air conditioned.

1.3 Office Area: 25 sqm (x min 3m high) Function: Administrative office for one or two persons.

Other: Adjacent to entry and shop.

Special requirements: Air conditioned but with natural ventilation also and view to outside if possible.

2.1 Change rooms Area: As required Function: Changing rooms with showers, toilets to Australian Standards.

Other: Easy access for players from outside and access to the court.

Special Requirements: Hard wearing, washable walls and floors with line drains.

3.1 Store Rooms (x 2) Areas: 100 sqm x 2 (min 2.4m high) Function: General store rooms.

Other: Good connection to court and outside.

Special requirements: Hard wearing, washable walls and floors. Natural ventilation.

Basketball Stadium design submission requirements The requirement will be to submit on a maximum of 4 A3 sheets in landscape format a schematic design for the project above.

This is to include the following: - Roof/Site plan at scale 1:1000 showing carparking and landscaping - Floor plan(s) at scale 1:500 (see note below) showing your arrangement of the required spaces and also including all the main service plant and equipment rooms (as required by the consultants)‌ it goes without saying that the level of resolution and detail is related to the scale of the drawings and therefore walls will have a thickness, openings will be visible, stairs and steps will be included, annotations will clarify the planning etc.

- At least one 3D view of the building illustrating its architectural proposition (scale and mass, materiality etc).

- Cross section through the main stadium (at scale 1:100) illustrating preliminary ideas of structure and cladding (annotated).

NOTES: - if the drawings do not fit on A3 then you may scale them down to fit and include a scale bar. In the case of a reduced drawing the level of detail and quality of lineweights etc should still be those that one would expect at the required scales.

- the plant rooms and service spaces that are requested by the consultants are to be included in this schematic design submission..

Assessment criteria This component of work will be assessed in: - completeness and quality of presentation - architectural proposition (site response, brief response, planning, composition etc) - integration of services (plant and equipment spaces, diagrams, notes etc) - structural/cladding proposal (section) The weighting of this component is 20%.

The work is to be submitted to the Resource Room by: 4.00 pm Friday 13 March 2015 (Week 3).

Any work submitted after the 4:00 pm deadline will be treated as late and subject to late penalties.

Structural Report The second submission requires you to model your proposed primary structure for the entire Basketball Stadium using the Multiframe Software and to write and collate a report as outlined below. The report should be concise and needs to present the main topics as per the following Table of Contents. It is to be presented as a printed document in A3 landscape format. In addition you are to submit an electronic copy of your final multiframe model, as analysed in your report, on LMS (this will not be graded but may be looked at to verify the written content of your report).

Page 2: Structural Model. An explanation of the main structural idea with a dimensioned drawing showing the configuration of the proposed structural typology, spans, structural depths, bay widths etc ‌. use your multiframe model to do this (max 1 sheet)

Pages 3-5: Load Calculations. An explanation of you arrived at the loading on the structural model. Include Dead Load, Live Load, Wind Load‌. beware of units and outline assumptions and sources for the load calculations (max 3 sheets)

Pages 6- 11: Analysis and Results. Show and discuss the results you have obtained with consideration of the Suggested Load Cases. Your discussion should focus on design criteria, deflections, bending shear and axial stresses etc (max 6 sheets: 1 per Load Case)

Page 12: Conclusions. A written summary of what you have understood from the analysis, with supporting diagrams if required (max 1 sheet)

Pages 13+ : Appendices. If required, additional calculations, analysis and results, data etc (if these are necessary, keep them concise and brief)

Notes: The Printed Report is to have your Name, Student Number and Lab Number on the front cover sheet Drawings and diagrams in the report need not be to scale but should be legible and clear.

Your LMS Submission should be a single file named as LN-SN-Name.mfd (LN is your Lab Number, SN is your Student Number and Name is your Name and Surname)

HO4: COMPONENT 3- DETAIL DEVELOPMENT AND SCALE MODEL

Detail Development and Scale Model submission requirements The weighting of this component is 50%.

The intention of this final component is to test your ability in developing a part of your building design to a greater level of resolution and documentation. It is expected that you will show your ability to research, adapt and apply constructional details, material and technical information, assembly etc in the development of architectural design detailing.

The minimum requirement will be to submit the following in A3 landscape format: -

schematic reference floor plan(s) at scale 1:500 highlighting which part of the building is being studied

schematic services diagrams illustrating where the hydraulic, electrical and mechanical plant is located and how the principal services are reticulated through the building (these are not detailed drawings but rather schematic diagrams. one A3 sheet of services diagrams should suffice. show the primary reticulation of services through your building ‌..electrical: from generator/transformer to mains switch room to distribution boards; mechanical: ducting from air handling unit to the various climate controlled spaces for supply and return air; hydraulic: from water collection to storage and re-use, fire requirements etc)

typical (cross) section of your building through the main working spaces (eg tank room, barrel room) at scale 1:50 (note if the section doesn't fit on A3 in its entirety then stop/start the section to make it fit as shown in the example below)

details referenced to the above section (at scales 1:10-1:5) showing architectural/constructional resolution (these should be both vertical and horizontal details, as well as part façade elevations (scale 1:50)

sectional model, at scale 1:100 of the same portion of the building which is being studied showing the relationship between structure and enclosure (this must demonstrate an architectural and technical understanding of the relationships, tolerance and fit of the structure, services and cladding of the building.

As this model is a representation of your proposed building, it should be imbued with precision, quality and craftsmanship that you as the Architect would expect from the builder). It is to include part of the site as a base and should be between 12 and 15m in width (ie 12-15cm @ 1:100)

Although the drawing set does not constitute a complete set of documents it should nevertheless be cross referenced and easily legible. All drawings including section and details are to be fully annotated either directly or with numbered legends, references and, where necessary, dimensions. They should attempt to show architectural as well as technical resolution through details and therefore the selection of the location for the study should be chosen carefully and discussed with your tutor.

The section, details and model need to relate to your structural solution developed in component 2 and show the relationship between structure and enclosure.

The tutorials are intended as a weekly checkpoint to discuss progress on your details and model with your tutor. Your tutor will only be able to help with the details if you have made attempts at drawing them and therefore, in order to get some benefit from the tutes, you must bring along new and developed work to discuss each week.

To produce a competent set of working details requires continual reassessment of earlier work and a continuing interaction with the drawings and tutors. It is almost inconceivable that an acceptable set of documents could be submitted without this consultation process. This is equally true with the model where thoughtful planning and the amount of time put in have a direct impact on the quality and success of the model. It is strongly suggested that students devise a weekly work program and then stick to it.

Assessment criteria This component of work will be assessed in: - completeness, clarity and quality of presentation - competency in architectural detail development and drawing (including aesthetic resolution, material selection and application, framing and structural connection, completeness and resolution of technical detailing, climatic and other exclusion (eg vermin, birds), waterproofing, ventilation etc, connection and assembly) - competency in technical/architectural modelling The work is to be submitted by 4.00pm Friday 15 May 2015 Note: Your work is to be submitted in Room 3.11.
