Location Address:Amherst Street Woodbridge Context:Woodbridge is a historical part of Perth backing onto both the Helena and Swan rivers. Amherst street runs parallel to the midland line train tracks and the selected site is a 1 minute walk from the quiet woodbridge train station and a 2 minute walk from woodbridge primary school aswell as being very close to an extensive range of shopping amenities. Woodbridge is 14km from the Perth CBD and in 2011 had a population of 1,142 people. The median age of people in the area is 41 however this age is declining as a new wave of young professionals is moving into the area with the redevelopment of the midland workshops. The average house prices in woodbridge are $440,000 almost $100,000 less the city average, making this a prime spot to be developed.

Climatic:Woodbridge maintains a slightly below average temperature being low lieing and so close to water sources. There is also a signiďŹ cant amount of green space including several nature reserve and ďŹ elds within the area.

Land use:Most land in woodbridge is utilized as residential and education. Neighboring midland and being close to the city via train most of the population works in these areas leaving woodbridge free for housing. The current redevelopment of the midland workshops however is forecast to revitalize the currently stagnant and the completion of the new swan hospital set for 2016 will further revitalize the area.

Lot features:The chosen lot on Amherst street is currently vacant and almost completely at, the neighboring houses maintain a reasonably historical feeling and for the most part are well maintained workers cottages, opposite the block is several mature trees which border the train line which should aid with the climate of the area.

Over the bridge aims to act as a piece of architecture that not only functions to high level in the modern day but also preserves the heritage, context and local aesthetic of the area. Aesthetic decisions in the design such as the pane glass windows mirror the buildings surroundings particularly the nearby Midland workshops and also act as an advanced piece of technology with installed smart glass allowing the owners to control light levels without using lights. The saw tooth roof not only acts as a key means of ensuring sustainability by maximizing solar gain but also is a very strong nod to the areas past and is one of the deďŹ ning aspects of Over the bridges appearance

Roof Technologies Over the bridges roof system incorporates a number of technologies and design features to ensure sustainability and usability

Water systems

All rainwater is captured and collected in rainwater tanks stored in the services room. The addition of water collection technology aims to ease the burden on local reservoirs and the rivers

Exo-Skeleton The fundamental structure of over the river is formed by a wooden frame constructed from Laminated veneer lumber measuring 250mm x260mm which is rated to hold industrial buildings allowing for any circumstances. the decision to make the frame external stems from the ability to create dual usage from it. the frame can be equipped with steel wire align to encourage deciduous wall climbing plants which all ow the building to stay warmer in winter and cooler in summer. the Aesthetic the externalization creates also enhances the industrial aesthetic the building strives for and structurally it allows for all walls within the building to be thinner and not structural. The large span at the rear of the building in the second house is also integrated into the structure by creating a self supporting hatch construction given support to the proposed roof garden.

Roof structure is designed to be self supporting with large smart glass windows on the south facing side and the solar panels facing north. The Structure essentially sits onto of the exo skeleton. In summer when the solar panels are at 84 degree angels additional shade is created over the south facing windows in by the solar panels, making them dual purpose.

Each gutter on the roof is also very slightly angled encouraging the rain and water flow towards the rainwater storage tank via gravity.

A key concept in the design of Over bridge was the pursuit of flexibility in design. This initially began as allowing the design to change but grew into the ability for the owner and occupants of the building to reconfigure the rooms as the please. For example the top floor of house a contains 3 reconfigurable rooms which allow for growth. the rooms feature sliding walls and can be configured in numerous ways. for example one could be designated a study and the other 2 and en suite made into a second master bedroom or the rooms can be arranged into 3 small bedrooms which would be ample for the client which anticipates the needs of a growing family. This flexibility carries on in the ground floors where spaces have been created but there specific uses can be changed and alternated.

Context -Over the bridge aims to be a modern building that still discretely fits into its surrounding context, a building which although is new, echoes the history and heritage of the location it has been placed in

Stepping Back The title ‘Over the bridge’ refers to the moment when a couple grows into a family. One of the principle concepts of the building is allowing for growth. The front house serves to act as building where a young professional couple or even multiple couples could live an reside, the front house is designed to be outward looking and focusing on the world around it hence its placement. At the moment when the couple begins to grow into a family perhaps with a new born child the building re arranges to meet the families new needs, the rooms shift and nursery and additional bedrooms can be created and transformed. As the family grows and the children age the focus of the family shifts and what where once outward looking young professionals become inward looking family oriented parents. This is symbolically represented in the prevalence of how both buildings are entered, for example in the front house a large primary door displays itself to the world allowing people to enter, where’s in the rear house the primary entrance is more discreet and hidden creating greater protection for the families and ensuring a more inward focus. It is at this moment that threshold the ‘Over the bridge’ moment takes its true meaning, the family outgrows the front house and steps back into the rear house which provides a quiet and protected environment of the walled yards where the family can happily and quietly grow up together taking what is popular with suburbs and augmenting it.

Flexibility - adopting the lessons taught by Charles Korrea flexibility in design allows for a much more free flowing nature in the Architecture. In over the bridge several considerations are made in accordance with the lesson of flexibility. The most obvious of which is the reconfigurable rooms which demonstrate an ability for the users to essential tailor the building to there individual needs. This is especially prevalent in the front house where space is at a greater premium and a design that is flexible allows greater versatility for the owner. Korrea also taught the notion of flow through flexibility and in Over the bridge this is amplified in the centralization of the stair case in both houses. In most buildings a stair case which acts as the primary link between top floor and bottom floor is put off to the side out of the way forcing the user to follow specific routes in the building. In Over the bridge the staircase is centralist and acts as a design center peace and a central link between all users in the house, which essentially is what a stair case does with both floors. The centralization allows free flowing circular traffic around the building allowing users to make there own way through the building instead of being forced through the building which is common is most modern western buildings.

System- over the bridge adopts the aspirations of Le Corbusiers Dom-ino system and a uniform structural system has been developed out of sustainable materials in a way that it could be easily applied to numerous building design of dual housing constructions.

The thickness of the middle floor is due to the serives being carried through this spine and through the developed system all electrics, water and services in the building can be easily accessed worked on and modified Compression- through nature of designing a double house the lessons of compression must be utilized. In over the bridge the building and living spaces are primarily compressed through flexibility and the differing size of each house plays into the needs of the targeted clients.
