The Charlottesville Area Community Foundation (CACF) is pleased to announce $74,000 in grants to twelve local nonprofits working to improve the quality of life in Louisa County. The Community Foundation works with an advisory committee of Louisa community leaders to assist in determining grant recipients in Louisa County. The largest grant was for $20,000 to the Louisa County Resource Council (LCRC) for construction of a new food storage and distribution building. LCRC broke ground on March 18 on the new wing, which will house a new refrigeration unit. The project is expected to be completed by mid-May. Donna Isom, Executive Director states, “The Louisa Resource Council Community Cupboard’s contribution to “Feeding America” has risen to an approximate 1100 families per month. With this grant, LCRC is able to expand its safe food storage space, which will

allow this organization to gather and store more perishable and healthy food products. It is only because of the generous support of the Charlottesville Area Community Foundation and our donors that LCRC is able to forge ahead in its endeavor to improve the quality of life for families in this community.“ In 2012, CACF provided $50,000 to the Louisa County Earthquake Recovery Program, and the Bama Works Fund of Dave Matthews Band also provided a grant of $50,000. CACF also established a special CACF Louisa County Earthquake Relief Fund to which donations from private individuals and corporations were added. All of these grants were made in September 2011, before federal and other funds became available. The Louisa County Community Fund was established in CACF as a result of a bequest from long-time Louisa County residents Ruby and Albert Bazzanella. This initiative provides a significant source of financial support to nonprofit organizations working for

CACF Announces Louisa County Community Fund 2013 Grants

Members of the public will have an opportunity to tour four farm estates in Albemarle County, as well as the Keswick Hunt Club and Grace Episcopal Church on Saturday, June 8, 2013 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The tours are sponsored by Grace Episcopal Church, which is located near the farms in the Cismont/Keswick area. Growth of a Boutique Industry Virginia soil has clearly justified Jefferson’s confidence. In 1873 local grape growers founded the Monticello Wine Company in Charlottesville, on a hill at the end of Wine Street near Hedge Street. rustrated in his efforts to grow grapes suitable for his favorite beverage, Thomas Jefferson surely never dreamed that by the 1870s Charlottesville could dub itself “the Capital of the Wine Belt in Virginia.” A student of European culture and cuisine who labored to bring Old World sophistication to the New, Jefferson thought that America had the “soil, aspect, and climate of the best wine countries.” But the vines Jefferson planted in 1774 with Florentine viticulturist Phillip Mazzei on land adjacent to Monticello were damaged by a rough winter, ravaged by mildew and phylloxera, then trampled by the horses of Hessian soldiers in the British employ, put out to pasture in the vineyards. Despite the backing of George Washington, George Wythe, and the Royal Governor of Virginia, the fledgling Virginia Wine Company came to naught. Though he tried again in 1807, the Founding Oenophile, the man who claimed “good wine is a daily necessity to me,” never produced a decent vintage. come into its own. “When winemaking came back in Virginia in the 70s most of the wines tended to not be very good,” say Warren Richard and Paul Armstrong of the Virginia Wine Time blog. “There were not a lot of skilled winemakers in the area. In fact most of the wines being made at that time were by people who wanted to grow wine for a hobby.” Thirty years ago, Virginia wine “used to be pretty terrible,” says Robert Harllee, who sells a lot of Virginia wine these days at his Market Street Wineshops in Charlottesville. Harllee credits a number of factors for the improvement, including the Virginia Farm Winery Act, “a big thing that allowed wineries to organize and have a structure,” and state support for an agricultural extension program. “Also, we are in an area that a lot of people want to live in. People who have money look for a place to invest. Wine has a coolness and a hipness factor. Once certain wineries showed that it could be done, it became a more attractive investment for other people.” “It turns out that if you plant in the right place, you can make some pretty good grapes,” Harllee says. where Jefferson failed and Monticello Wine Company succeeded is now designated the Monticello AVA, one of six American Viticultural Areas in Virginia, of 206 in the entire United States. Comprising most of Albemarle, Greene, Orange, and Nelson counties, the area is blessed with fertile, granitebased clay soil and, despite humid summers, a growing season of over 200 days. Some 30 varieties of grapes flourish here. In 2012 the top five were Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Vidal Blanc and Viognier. “There are excellent wineries in each region of Virginia, but the biggest concentration of the best wines come from Charlottesville,” say the Wine Time guys, noting that local wines frequently win prizes in the annual Governor’s Cup competition. “There are a lot of very good winemakers in that area.” And the burgeoning local wine industry has made the Virginia countryside a destination spot for wine lovers and “agri-tourists” already drawn here for our history.

Upcoming Central Virginia Wine Events Twenty-four wineries will take part in The Montpelier Wine Festival, Saturday May 4 from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.,

and Sunday May 5, 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at president James Madison’s Montpelier estate in Orange. Artisans and crafters from throughout the mid-Atlantic will sell their work, and jazz, bluegrass, and folk groups will play. Prizes—three bottles of wine!— will be given each day in the Exceptional Hat Contest, in categories including Largest, Smallest, Winey, Spring Bonnet, Kids Hat and Beyond Your Basic Ball Cap. Kids can enjoy face painting, ride in a barrel train, take a kite-making class (for a small fee), and enter a kite-flying contest. Festivalgoers will receive a commemorative wine glass, tastings from each winery, and a chance to win a door prize. Adults will be asked to show proof of age. No pets will be allowed. Special packages are available for parties who want to reserve tables or tents. There is a $2 donation suggested for parking.
