CENTRAL VIRGINIA’S PUBLIC SCHOOLS

W

By Joanne DiMaggio elcome to our annual public school edition! This week we feature the nine public school districts in central Virginia, each highlighting their achievements over the last year and their expectations going into the 2013-4 school year.

Albemarle County Public Schools The primary responsibility of Albemarle County Public Schools was summarized in Superintendent Pam Moran’s 2013-14 budget message— Meeting Students at the Leading Edge of Their Potential. Whether they are driven by the advanced manufacturing ripple

from the University of Virginia’s Engineering School into elementary school digital fabrication labs, or yearround globally influenced CoderDojos, where students learn MIT’s Scratch programming language, create websites, video games and computer apps and program robots, the imaginations and learning capacities of children are expanding at transformational speed. It is the same fuel that long has energized America’s inventors and entrepreneurs, its patent-makers, backyard mechanics, artists and athletes, its engineers, doctors and scientists, its designers, builders, and most especially, its visionaries. Schools across the nation stand at a turning point in their history, amidst a rising cultural tide of participation in

global networks. It is a development that can open never before dreamed of doors. And what is most powerful is that this educational process calls together not just teachers or administrators, parents or volunteers. Everyone in Albemarle County should be a contributor, people from all walks of life and interests, who are different in so many ways but who share the same fierce passion for ensuring that the next generation always will be better than the one it follows. We have seen a powerful example in the volunteers who help to staff our CoderDojo academy. They help to provide a learning environment where students of all ages and skill levels learn Public Schools continued on pg. 14

how to be not just consumers, but creators of technology. We tripled the number of seats this year after our 2012 waiting list reached 1,000 students. We also began a new program that reflects the world around us—Maker Spaces—that teaches creativity, design and production skills to elementary school students. It’s a relatively new concept in which students transform their own ideas from paper to prototype to finished product. With implications for the future of advanced design and manufacturing, students employ computer programming, electronics, robotics, 3D printing, digital photography and videography, even music composition to complete their task. These academies and the school division’s own Design 2015 pilot programs, have one unifying purpose— preparing students to succeed in their century—the 21st—and leaving behind the instructional methods and approaches that prepared many of us for a century gone past. This year begins the second year of the Health and Medical Sciences Academy at Monticello High School. Open to all public school students in the county, the academy uses case studies and project-based learning to prepare students for success in a broad range of health-related professions—from technician to EMT to veterinarian to physician. This also will be a planning year for a third center of excellence in Albemarle County Public Schools—an Environmental Studies Academy at Western Albemarle High School. The need for professional expertise in the clean energy field, in applied technologies for agriculture, in the use of Geospatial Information Systems, and in oceanography, research and policy are examples of the impact graduates can have in shaping the world’s future quality of life. Agnor Hurt Elementary School

Clark Elementary School just graduated their first class of students who completed four years in the program. Collectively, these students earned over $1 million in academic scholarships to such nationally-renown engineering schools as MIT, Purdue and Stanford. While the dynamic power of technology and the global economy and environment will continue to create significant challenges and opportunities, education at its most fundamental level always will be about people. Albemarle County Public Schools’ highly dedicated administrators, teachers, staff, child nutrition and building services professionals and bus drivers

The Charlottesville City School Division comprises six elementary schools (preschool-4); one upper elementary school (5-6); one middle school (7-8) and one high school (9-12). The division also offers a locally funded preschool program for 3- and 4-year-olds. In September 2012, enrollment for preK-12 was 4236 students. Neighborhood schools with a global orientation expose City students to a wide variety of experiences, viewpoints, and opportunities—preparing them not only for post-secondary education but also for life. This year, a new collaboration with the University of Virginia will establish the nation’s first Laboratory School for Advanced Manufacturing Technologies. The science labs at Buford Middle School are being renovated to house the first Commonwealth Engineering Design Academy where engineering and math concepts will be incorporated into the science curriculum. Additional renovations at Charlottesville High School will follow. Engineering and advanced manufacturing classes will begin in the fall, serving eligible 8th graders. Courses will be integrated with existing science classes to create a dual curriculum that expands one grade level each year. Eventually, high school students will have the option to choose an “Advanced Manufacturing” career track that incorporates dual enrollment credit from Piedmont Virginia Community College. Additional college credit can be earned through accelerated learning opportunities. Advanced math instruction in 6th grade includes middle school math concepts that prepare students for Algebra I. Sixth grade students can take Spanish 1 for high school credit and, as they progress, complete their language requirement in middle school. Buford offers honors courses in Algebra and Geometry that award high school credit. At Charlottesville High School, a wide variety of Advanced Placement, honors, online classes, and dual enrollment courses make it possible for students to graduate from CHS with college credit in many areas—even an Associate’s Degree!

Louisa County Schools Through innovation and hard work, Louisa County Public Schools has emerged as a top-caliber provider of public education in the growing central Virginia area. Louisa County High School students continue to post area-leading SOL pass rates. The school’s new advanced curriculum will allow our best and brightest to secure an associate’s degree at a fraction of the cost to families. LCHS has also developed one of the most varied and successful career and technical education programs in the state. Our students hone job skills, earning certifications in fields such as the culinary arts, firefighting, cosmetology, building trades, and more. The stage for that across-the-board success is set at Louisa County Middle School, where pass rates continue to rise. Student achievement and school spirit go hand-in-hand at LCMS, which has also become a leader in the school division’s Olweus AntiBullying Program. Moss-Nuckols Elementary School, which serves the Zion Crossroads area, uses a garden as the centerpiece of its emphasis on nutrition. Second-graders

cultivate staples, such as lettuce and tomatoes, which supply the school cafeteria. They grow other vegetables, such as bok choy and Swiss chard, which are used in school-wide taste tests, exposing students to new foods. Jouett Elementary School, in eastern Louisa, has implemented the highlyregarded Responsive Classroom curriculum, which develops the rhetorical and conversational skills of students through daily interactions. Students also participate in a number of communitybuilding groups, such as the Garden Club, which has beautified the grounds. Thomas Jefferson Elementary School, located on the campus of Trevilians Elementary School, continues to succeed despite the post-earthquake mobile accommodations, which will be in place until 2014. The school’s Key competition encourages positive actions for students as groups, with monthly rewards for those classes that remain on their best behavior. Serving western Louisa County, Trevilians Elementary School recognizes that success takes a different form for each individual student. With the motto “Create, Achieve, Celebrate,” the school encouraged short-term goal setting for every student this past year. Students determined their own weekly marks of success, and earned treasure box prizes when they achieved them. A commitment to student achievement, paired with these and other innovative approaches, have allowed Louisa County Public Schools to solidify its position as a top school district in the region.

Madison County Schools Pride. In all, Madison is known not so much by “schools” as by educational families – students surrounded by caring, thoughtful parents and community members who expect graduates to have earned a top-notch education. Our students attend Virginia and the nation’s top schools and enter the workforce exceptionally well prepared. This great feat is accomplished by a caring community centered on what we call “Madison Pride” – the drive to provide children an absolutely remarkable education and a plethora of opportunities. Schools. For nearly two decades, student enrollment has hovered around 2,000 students in four schools: Madison Primary School (PK-2), Waverly Yowell Elementary School (3-5), William H. Wetsel Middle School (6-8), and Madison County High School (9-12). Exceptional Education. Madison County Public Schools (MCPS), a student-centered and communitysupported school division, insures a superior education in a changing world.

Our vision is to build on excellence to exceed community expectations … to be the best. In Madison, we are proud of excellent schools, which focus on traditional methods and progressive programs in our never-ending cycle of improvement. This is why we are regarded as a superior school division in the Commonwealth. We are committed to helping students acquire the strong values to deal effectively with important intellectual, ethical, and social problems. Responding to community, parent, and workforce expectations, MCPS aims to educate children to be prepared for good citizenry and life-long learning. Twenty-first century skills require that tomorrow’s workforce be adept at technology, excellent communicators, responsible employees, and physically fit and active. To this end, we want every secondary student to take Dual Enrollment, Advanced Placement, or earn an Industry Certification prior to graduation as well as a foreign language. And, we encourage all students to be scholar-athletes or scholar-performers. MCPS embraces the notion of global awareness. We aim to provide world awareness through foreign language, current events, classes in culture and diversity, as well as K-12 division wide studies on a central question. We support enrichment experiences for all students to engage them with the world beyond Madison and by developing national and international connections through virtual exchanges with national and international sister schools. We fully support the incorporation of cultures and current events of local, national and international communities at every grade level. Equally, we support the notion of community citizenry and awareness. MCPS embraces our local community that is rich in history and tradition. Our landscape boasts preeminent countryside - mountain life and flatlands, rich with agriculture, viniculture, forestry, and pastureland. We expect students to know our Madison community and natural wealth as we encourage field trips, community service projects and service learning. In our preeminent countryside, students have the opportunity to experience and learn from our amazing location. Over the course of academic careers, beginning in Kindergarten, students excel in academic competitions. In fact, Madison has won the prestigious Wells Fargo Cup (formally Wachovia Cup) 18 times in 19 years in 2012. Winners of the Wells Fargo Cup are determined by a point system based on performance in Virginia High School League (VHSL) state

Go for the unsecured, fixed rate personal loan. An unsecured loan means the loan doesn’t require you to use an asset as collateral. So, if you default on a personal loan, the lender can’t automatically take a piece of your property as payment for the loan. This is the primary reason that personal loans are more difficult to get. The lender doesn’t have any asset to seize if you decide you can’t make loan payments anymore. Lenders can take other collection actions, including reporting late payments to the credit bureaus, hiring a collection agency, and filing a lawsuit against you.

Fixed Interest Rates

A

ll of us have faced a time in life when we needed a large chunk of extra cash. Whether it’s your daughter’s wedding; a business opportunity that’s too good to pass up; or dealing with an unexpected emergency, personal loans are one method of making the impossible possible. Personal loans are one of many types of loans you can borrow from a bank. While these loans are typically general-purpose loans that you can use at your discretion, they are often more difficult to get and have strict qualification requirements. So while personal loans can be a godsend, it’s important to make sure you get the personal loan that’s right for you to avoid problems in the long term.

How Much Should You Borrow?

How much do you really need? There are no rules of the road here, but there is some common sense advice: take out the smallest loan you can and arrange to pay it off as quickly as possible. The amount of personal loans ranges anywhere from $1,000 to $50,000 and depends on your credit rating. The better your credit score, the more money you can borrow. Some banks have a low cap on the amount of personal loan you can borrow; let’s say

$10,000 is the max. By going to your own bank where you have established a relationship, you may be able to take out higher loan amounts.

Carefully Choose Your Lender

Like any major purchase, it’s important that you do your homework to identify the right loan for you. Do not flood lenders with loan applications in the hope of being accepted by one of them. Every time you put in another application, it triggers a search of your credit report. By sending out a lot of applications over a short period of time, you’ll hoist a red flag and give lenders a reason to suspect your motives, making them far less likely to approve your loan application. Online lenders only offer comparatively smaller amounts for short-term personal loans. If you are looking for a giant amount go for a bank or credit union. Your loan proposals are likely to be accepted if you apply at an institution where you’re an established client. See if your bank offers short-term personal loans or give some similar special offers. The bank may want to know what you’re going to use the money for and may even have a better loan for your needs. In case you have a shaky credit history, do what you can to increase your credit ratings as much as possible. Lenders will take into account your

Another reason to opt for an unsecured personal loan is that you know exactly how much your monthly payment will be because the interest rate is locked and doesn’t change for the life of the loan. Variable rate secured loans may look like a less expensive option when interest rates are low, but if rates suddenly start to shoot up, so do your monthly payments. Interest rates on personal loans are based on credit rating. The better your credit score, the lower your interest rate. Lower interest rates are ideal because it means you pay a lower cost for borrowing the loan. Shop around for the best deal by comparing interest rates, repayment loan terms, fees and penalties offered by different lenders.

Fixed Repayment Period

You have a set period of time to repay your personal loan. Loan periods are stated in months, e.g. 12, 24, 36, 48, and 60. Longer repayment periods lower your monthly loan repayment, but they also mean you pay more in interest than if you had a shorter repayment period. Your interest rate may also be tied to your repayment period. For example, you may have a lower interest rate with shorter repayment periods.

Payment Protection Insurance

Payment Protection Insurance (PPI) has received more than its share of bad publicity recently because of the number of mis-selling scandals. However, if you want the reassurance that in the event of illness your loan would be paid off, source the cheapest PPI through an independent specialist insurer rather than via your loan lender. And finally, to make sure you get exactly the coverage you need for your loan—read that small print!

Personal Loans:

previous track record and credit history before accepting your proposal. When you fill out the loan application, remember to include proof of your current employment status, monthly income and collateral potential. Once the lender receives your application he will run a thorough credit check. The payback term of most short-term personal loans is not more than five years. The lower the payback term is, the higher your interest rate will be. Make sure your interest rate is in line with the length of the repayment period. If your application gets rejected, find out why and then start searching for a new lender. There are plenty of options available out there.
