What’s Happening Around Town? VFH at 40: A Changing Virginia
Virginia Foundation for the Humanities announces VFH at 40: A Changing Virginia, a free community event hosted by the VFH Board of Directors in celebration of the organization’s rich forty-year history, compelling programs, and shared commitment to shape a more promising future. The event will take place on Thursday, October 2, 2014 from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. at the Jefferson School African American Heritage Center in Charlottesville. Throughout the evening, performances and exhibits will celebrate the diversity of VFH programs. Special features include live music by Jamal Millner and friends, demonstrations and dance by Master Mongolian Mask Maker Gankhuyag Natsag, and stunning photographs of Virginia’s dynamic and changing population made possible by the Columbia Pike Documentary Project (a VFH grant recipient). Additionally, guests will engage firsthand with the Foundation through unique components such as: • Audience interviews with Sarah McConnell and staff from With Good Reason radio program • Google Cardboard virtual reality headsets that offer views inside Virginia’s historic sites created by Encyclopedia Virginia • HUMANITIES SPOKEN HERE broadside produced at the Virginia Arts of the Book Center • Monacan Indian regalia worn by Karenne Wood, a member of the Monacan Indian Nation and director of the Virginia Indian Heritage Program • Opportunities to connect directly with VFH Board, Staff and Fellows The program will also highlight VFH’s vibrant 40 Years 40 Stories series, which chronicles the Foundation’s four decades of work to explore the human experience and inspire cultural engagement across the entire Commonwealth. In the words of VFH founder and president Robert C. Vaughan III, “When people and ideas connect, our days are more meaningful, our solutions more thoughtful and creative,
and our futures more promising. We thrive and grow together.” To mark this special occasion, cider, cake, and refreshments from Albemarle CiderWorks and A Pimento Catering will be served. Guests of all ages, both familiar and new to the Foundation, are warmly welcomed to join the celebration. The Jefferson School is located at 233 4th Street NW, Second Floor, Charlottesville, VA 22903. Limited parking will be available on site. Guests are asked to RSVP by September 25 to VFH at 434-924-6560 or online at VirginiaHumanities.org/vfh-at-40. More information on the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities is at www.VirginiaHumanities.org.
Charlottesville Symphony at U.Va in Symphony Under the Stars—All That Jazz! The University Programs Council of the University of Virginia and the Charlottesville Symphony are joining forces to present Symphony Under the Stars on Saturday, September 20, at 8:00 pm. First launched in 2009, this free outdoor pops concert will take place in the McIntire Amphitheater at U.Va. The rain location is Old Cabell Hall on the U.Va Grounds. Conducted by Music Director Kate Tamarkin, the orchestra will perform selections including All That Jazz from the hit film and Broadway musical, Chicago; a suite from George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess; Duke Ellington’s It Don’t Mean a Thing if It Ain’t Got That Swing and more. This year’s guest narrator is Archie Holmes, Vice Provost for Educational Innovation & Interdisciplinary Studies and Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Virginia. The Free Bridge Quintet will partner with the orchestra in Ben’s Jazz Trumpet as well as perform its own set. FBQ is the official faculty jazz quintet of the University of Virginia McIntire Department of Music. Founded in 1997, it features Jeff Decker on saxophones, Robert Jospé on drums, Peter Spaar on bass, John D’earth on trumpet and flugelhorn and Butch Taylor on piano. The quintet has been a staple of not only the U.Va and Charlottesville jazz scene, but also the greater Central Virginia jazz scene, for more than 10 years.
University Programs Council is a student-run programming organization that provides students and members of the U.Va and Charlottesville communities with a wide array of entertaining and educational activities and events. UPC representative Lindsey Rosenthal says, “We are thrilled to partner with the Charlottesville Symphony in our fifth year of bringing Symphony Under the Stars to UVa’s amphitheater. We are particularly excited about the orchestra’s collaboration with the Free Bridge Quintet at this year’s concert and look forward to presenting an autumn evening of outdoor music!” Free parking is available in the Central Grounds Garage located on Emmet Street. Picnics are welcome, but alcohol is prohibited on the U.Va Grounds. Generous underwriting gifts have been received from Anne R. Worrell and Gerald L. and Robin D. Baliles. Additional support is provided by the McIntire Department of Music and media sponsor The Daily Progress.
Torres Strait Islander Artist Ricardo Idagi Visits Charlottesville For Residency The Kluge-Ruhe Collection of U.Va. will host artist Ricardo Idagi, a multimedia sculptor and musician from Melbourne, September 15 – October 4, 2014. His residency and exhibition, sponsored by Australia Council for the Arts, will provide a number of opportunities to meet the artist and learn about his culture and artwork. Ricardo Idagi is a Meriam man who grew up on Mer (Murray Island) in the Torres Strait, north of mainland Australia. He was encouraged to produce art by two uncles, one of which was Eddie Koiki Mabo, who is famous internationally for winning native title rights to Mer Island in 1993. Idadi took a commercial art course at Cairns

Technical and Further Educational Institute and settled in Melbourne in 1997. He initially gained recognition at the exhibition Ilan Pasin (This is our way): Torres Strait Art in 1998 and held his first solo exhibition in 2002. He has been included a number of major exhibitions over the last five years, and has won two prestigious Australian art awards: the Western Australian Indigenous Art Award (2009) and the New Media category of the 28th Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award (2011). His work is held in the National Gallery of Australia, the National Gallery of Victoria, the Queensland Art Gallery, and the Art Gallery of Western Australia, among others. The exhibition of Idagi’s artwork at the Kluge-Ruhe Collection, titled Gurari – Saltwater Drinker, brings together works from the last five years that serve as a visual memoir of Mer (Murray Island), Idagi’s home in the Torres Strait. The sculptures are made of a wide variety of materials, from raffia and feathers to beer cans and wrought iron. The works comment on political and social issues facing Torres Strait Islanders today, such as multigenerational alcoholism and the impact of the Anglican mission on the Island. The exhibition also honors the rich cultural heritage of Meriam people and Idagi’s own personal resilience. Ricardo Idagi’s residency provides the rare opportunity for the community to learn from a leading Indigenous Australian sculptor. He will be present to meet visitors at the final Night at the Museum event of the summer on September 18, when the Kluge-Ruhe Collection throws open its doors to its expansive lawn for local beer, food trucks and live music. $30.00. The Save-This-Life Microchip includes a lifetime registration. Flea and tick preventative will also be available for purchase at a discounted rate. The Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA is located at 3355 Berkmar Drive; the clinic will take place on the left side of the SPCA, in the building’s ground-floor education room. Rabies is a deadly, but preventable virus. In an effort to protect people and pets against the rabies virus, Virginia state law requires that all dogs and cats over the age of four months be vaccinated against rabies. The SPCA asks that Clinic attendees bring all dogs on a leash and all cats in a carrier. Pet owners will need to show proof of current rabies vaccine in order to receive a three-year vaccine. The clinic is first come, first served and limited to vaccine and microchips available. This clinic is made possible with support from Boehringer Ingelheim. “One of the SPCA’s goals is to return lost pets to their owners and microchips help immensely with this effort,” says Director of Marketing and Development Lisa Lane. “We are happy to provide these three important services at an affordable price to help keep pets in our community healthy, safe and together with their families.” The mission of the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA is to provide a safe and nurturing environment for the lost, abandoned, and homeless animals of the City of Charlottesville and the County of Albemarle and to increase the number of these animals being placed in appropriate, loving, and permanent homes through adoptions, foster care, and outreach, and to set a standard of excellence and leadership in shelter animal care, humane education, and progressive animal welfare programs. For more information about the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA call 434-973-5959 or visit our website at www.caspca.org. The SPCA’s main adoption center is located at 3355 Berkmar Drive in Charlottesville and is open seven days a week from 12 PM– 6 PM.

f you want to live close to town and still enjoy spectacular views, consider Pantops in Albemarle County just east of the Charlottesville line. Thomas Jefferson was one of this area’s earliest property owners and one of the first to publicly acknowledge its natural beauty. It is said he named it Pant-Ops, which is Greek for “all seeing,” an apparent reference to the great views contemporary homeowners still admire. Today convenience is also one of the Pantops area’s hallmarks. Residents find it easy to get to Interstate 64 and head east to Richmond or west to Staunton. Downtown is also easily accessible as is the Route 29 corridor via Park Street and Rio Road.
Of course, homeowners can also find much of what they need without ever leaving the area or visiting the more congested parts of town. Martha Jefferson Hospital, with its easy parking and single rooms, is a welcome newcomer to Pantops. Residents also can enjoy a growing variety of restaurants and shopping opportunities and have easy access to Wal-Mart and Lowes a short drive east on the interstate at Zion Crossroads. Very soon they can also shop at Fifth Street Station just off of the interstate to the west, which will feature Wegmans and a host of other wellknown establishments. Like other real estate markets in our area, Pantops suffered some during the recent recession. However, as evidenced by lots of new construction in the area,
it is coming back strong with something to offer just about everyone.
Convenience is Key A big part of what makes Pantops attractive is the convenience, said Sandy Collins with Roy Wheeler Realty Co. She lives and works in Pantops and loves the easy accessibility to the interstate and Route 250. To get to the airport without driving on Route 29, the back way via Stony Point is also available. People like Pantops because downtown is so close, said Inessa Telefus with Loring Woodriff Real Estate Associates. It’s also an easy drive to Richmond, a big convenience in two career households where one job is there and the other in Charlottesville.
Mike Plecker, with Roy Wheeler Realty, lives in the Pantops area and appreciates the easy access to Interstate 64. He added that in spite of living in such close proximity to this major roadway, the mountain protects them from all the highway noise keeping their neighborhood safe and quiet. Dawn Cromer with Nest Realty described Pantops as an area that has everything people want “all right there.” She referenced the various amenities, which include two major grocery stores, a variety of restaurants and the Garden Hilton. Also, people who like being outdoors can enjoy a picnic at Darden Towe Park or walk on the Rivanna Trail, both of which are close by. Another real benefit of Pantops is that, although it is near all of the ame-

nities of Charlottesville, it is across the county line in Albemarle. This means residents pay the lower county taxes and attend county schools. Plecker, who has two young daughters, added that he and his wife have been very happy with Stony Point elementary school, which gets high ratings from local residents and enjoys a lot of community support.
Views and Vistas A good reason to settle in Pantops is what Plecker called the “gorgeous mountain views.” He grew up in the Valley and lived for a few years in Northern Virginia before he and his wife decided to relocate to Charlottesville. He likes the topography in Pantops because “it’s not all flat,” and also there are lots of trees. Plecker and his wife also appreciate the fact that Pantops is not as congested as other parts of town. Judy Savage, with Judy Savage and Company Realtors, referenced the area‘s convenience and access to shopping, adding that “the views are great too.” Even the new hospital has exceptional views. Cromer described the panoramic mountain views that she enjoyed when she had her second baby at the new Martha Jefferson Hospital.
The Pantops Real Estate Market The real estate market in Pantops continues to recover and in some instances is doing very well. “Just like the rest of Albemarle County, the Pantops area saw decreases in home values during the recession. The market is improving and we have seen prices increase although they still have not gotten back up to their highest levels,“ Savage said. New construction is doing very well in the Pantops area, explained Charlie Armstrong, Vice President of Development with Southern Development Homes. His company is one of two builders at Pavilions of Pantops, a popular townhome community there. “Sales have been strong and consistent there, even during the downturn,” he said. Armstrong was also enthusiastic about the sales at Highland Ridge a new high-end community in Pantops. Lots there are on half an acre and prices start at $550,000. He explained there are many growing families who now feel good enough about the economy that they are comfortable moving up to a bigger space. A lot of them are choosing Highland Ridge and as a result, “we can’t build the homes fast enough,” he said. Cromer worked with a couple just like this. Both spouses were physicians,
Even the new hospital has exceptional views.
Cromer described the panoramic mountain views that she enjoyed when she had her second baby at the new Martha Jefferson Hospital. and when they arrived in Charlottesville they bought a townhouse that fit their budget and lifestyle as residents. Now, five years and two babies later, they sold their townhome and moved on to a single family home. “This is a pattern we see a lot,” Cromer said. “People buy a townhome when they first move here, decide they like this side of town, and choose to stay, moving into a single family residence in one of the other area subdivisions.” Highland Ridge is going in behind an established Pantops neighborhood called Fontana. Prices in Fontana are less than in Highland Ridge and the market there is also very strong. Earlier this year, listings in Fontana spent an average of 102 days on the market (DOM). After March of this year, however, the DOM dropped substantially to an average of two to two and a half weeks Plecker said, suggesting this may be due in part to Fontana’s greater visibility to prospective buyers who must drive through there in order to visit the new homes in Highland Ridge. Pantops is also popular with investors, Telefus said. Townhome and condo rentals are in demand and investors are buying properties to take advantage of this hot market. CONTINUED ON PAGE 19

this, she explained, is that many of the desirable lots, the ones that sold first when the units were new, are now on the resale market. There are also a lot of condos in the area, but the market there is slower because it is difficult to obtain financing. It’s not impossible, Cromer said, but it comes from private loans with local lenders and often the interest rate is higher than what is available for single family or town homes. Also buyers may be required to put down at least 20 percent. Some of the Pantops area condos are a real plus for cash buyers and those who can qualify for the more difficult to get loans. Telefus described condos at Carriage Hill as one of Pantop’s hidden secrets; a fantastic setting with mountain views and easily accessible public transportation. Homeowners who want some exercise can even walk to Martha Jefferson, she added.
Something for Everyone in Pantops A big plus for Pantops is the variety and diversity of housing options. You
Buyers From Everywhere Lots of people moving to Pantops are local or they come from Northern Virginia or elsewhere up and down the Interstate 95 corridor. However, Plecker explained that if you throw a dart at a map you will hit a place that is the former home of someone now living at Pantops. Regardless of where you live now, if you are looking for an area that is convenient to Richmond and most major centers in Charlottesville, which also has lots of options for shopping and restaurants, ask your agent about Pantops. You will find all of this there along with friendly people and wonn derful views. Celeste Smucker is a writer, blogger and author who lives near Charlottesville.

The demand for rental properties is due in part to the proximity of the hospital, which employs a lot of people. Savage said she sold two townhomes in Pantops recently, and rented another one. The rental went to two physicians relocating here from Boston who wanted time to get to know the area before purchasing a home. The market has been “very active,” Collins said, adding that if it weren’t we wouldn’t be seeing so much new construction in the Pantops area. In spite of this, builders are not putting up spec homes like they once did, she said. “Fontana has picked up momentum,” Cromer said, “and Highland Ridge is taking off.” Townhome sales are also strong with resales doing as well as new construction, she said. Two years ago she had a townhome listing that did not fare well due in part to competition from new construction. The following year, the same property sold in 30 days for a $5,000 higher listing price. This year she had a townhome listing that sold before she put it on the market. Part of the reason for

or their kids and we get to know and watch out for each other.” Seniors also have options to choose from in Pantops, including condo units that don’t have stairs, Telefus said. Jefferson Heights, an over 55 apartment complex with optional services to support independent living is also located at Pantops, and seniors who want or need a higher level of care may find what they are looking for at facilities such as Heritage Inn and Westminster Canterbury.

will find everything from apartments, condos and townhomes to single-family homes in a variety of price ranges along with a selection of lot sizes, Armstrong said. The result is many options to choose from and “a great mix of people.” Pantops is attractive to a lot of young professionals, Plecker said. A lot of newlyweds, graduate students and interns like the townhomes. Fontana and Highland Ridge attract self-employed people who work from home and other small business owners he continued. Many families with children appreciate the Pantops area, which Plecker described as “kid loaded and kid friendly.” The townhomes are also attractive to single buyers. Telefus described one of her recent buyers, a single woman who is a runner and takes advantage of the local trails at Monticello and along the Rivanna River. She is also close to her job, which is downtown. This area also has a strong sense of community, Collins said. “When there is a cat missing, or someone loses a wallet, we all look out for it.” This neighborliness is similar to what people experience in communities like Old Trail, she explained. “People are often out walking with their dogs

The contents of some commercially available cleaning products might raise your eyebrows. Here are some easy-toconcoct green cleaning recipes that you can make at home and why they are a better idea. Many household cleaning products contain unsafe chemicals. In fact, small-print labels often disclose products may be harmful to children or pets. Statistics from the National Capital Poison Center show commercial household cleaning products are a common source of poisoning in children under six, second only to cosmetics and personal care products. Over the long term these products can contribute to asthma and adversely affect the central nervous system, liver, and kidneys A further concern is that many of those chemicals end up in our local bodies of water including ground water. The Environmental Working Group, a non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to protecting human health and the environment, recommends avoiding some products entirely because they are unnecessary or have no safe alternatives. These include air fresheners, fabric softeners, and dryer sheets whose “fragrances” can trigger allergies and asthma; antibacterial products that spur the development of drug-resistant “super bugs;” and highly caustic drain and oven cleaners.

Green Alternatives Are Safe And Inexpensive “Baking soda and white vinegar are my ‘go to’ natural cleaners,” declares green-minded REALTOR® Kelly Ceppa, an Associate Broker with Nest Realty. “For example, I use vinegar as an effective fabric softener—it lowers the pH of the water, which makes the water softer and your clothes, too, without leaving any scent or residue. It also disinfects and removes odors. It’s a whole lot cheaper, too! “Baking soda is alkaline,” continues Ceppa, “and is good for scouring sinks, toilets, tile, and such. Between vinegar and soda, most things are covered.” White vinegar has potential as a disinfectant around the home and on produce. Especially when used with hydrogen peroxide, it can kill the majority of E. coli, Salmonella, Shigella, and Listeria bacteria. CAUTION: Use
GREEN Cleaning Recipes Can Be Easy on the Environment and Your Wallet BY MARILYN PRIBUS
the vinegar and peroxide one after the other; never mix them. Let the produce dry before eating. Other uses for white vinegar include preventing or removing surface mildew in the shower by spraying undiluted vinegar on walls and shower curtain or door. Let stand for at least an hour before rinsing. Mix vinegar half and half with water to clean windows in your home and car.
Add white vinegar and a bit of sugar to a vase of fresh flowers to extend their life.
Clean the dishwasher by running it empty on the shortest cycle with a cup of vinegar in a bowl on the bottom rack. Coffee maker manufacturers recommend mixing vinegar and water in equal parts, running half a cycle, then letting it sit for up to an hour before completing the cycle.
Clean a microwave by heating a glass container with a half-cup each of vinegar and water to boiling, letting it sit for up to an hour, then wiping oven clean. To clean brass, pewter, or copper, dissolve one teaspoon of salt in a cup of white vinegar, then add flour to make a paste. Apply, let it sit for about 15 minutes, then rinse thoroughly and polish dry. To control pesky fruit flies, pour an inch of white vinegar into a small glass, add a bit of smushed fruit, cover with plastic wrap, and poke small holes in the wrap. Traps ‘em like a charm! (You can use cider vinegar all by itself.) Baking soda is not only good to use as a cleanser, it’s an effective deodorizer for the fridge, freezer, cupboards, and garbage cans. It can be sprinkled on carpets then vacuumed up when it’s had time to absorb unpleasant smells. To kill odors in waterproof storage containers, add some baking soda to warm water in the container and soak overnight. To remove stains from most surfaces, use a paste of three parts baking soda to one part water. Let stand for a few minutes, then gently scrub clean. For stubborn stains, let stand for an hour before wiping clean. Baking soda and vinegar together can often clear a partially clogged drain. Pour 1/2 cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by 1/2 cup of vinegar. They will foam, so be careful of the fumes. Let stand for at least an hour before pouring a pot of boiling water down the drain, then flush thoroughly with cold water. And finally, this writer’s best tip of all, used on various occasions with various “skunked” dogs. Keep a quart of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide at the ready. (Or more if you have a really large dog.) To neutralize a skunk encounter (also works if dog has rolled in something awful) dissolve ¼ cup baking soda into that quart of peroxide, add one teaspoon of liquid soap and drench the dog. Rinse thoroughly. It absolutely works! n Albemarle County resident Marilyn Pribus recalls a time the anti-skunk mixture didn’t get rinsed promptly. Her dog was pastel until she grew in her new autumn coat of fur.

Many people think of allergies as a spring problem, but most sniffle sufferers know that fall can pose its own issues. Mold and ragweed are common fall allergy triggers, as well as dust mites, which are naturally more prevalent in the home during the drier months. “You can turn your home into a safe haven from fall allergens with regular, strategic cleaning and a few preventive measures,” says Robin Wilson, an interior design expert and an ambassador with the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. To help make your home more comfortable this season, Wilson is offering some fall cleaning tips to eliminate allergens and maintain a clean and healthy space: • Wash your bedding. Mattress and pillow protectors will help control dust mites. As an added precaution, wash your bedding in warm or hot water every month and replace pillows every three years. • Check for mold. Moisture breeds mold, so make sure to scan the inside of dishwashers, under the fridge in the water pan and in sink and bath drains. Change water dispensers and
icemaker filters on a regular basis. • Vacuum frequently. Whether you have wall-to-wall carpeting, tile or hardwood floors, it’s important to eliminate dust and dirt. Vacuum, mop or steam clean flooring regularly. “Use a vacuum with a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter, which captures small particles such as allergens, irritants and pollutants,” says Wilson. For example, the Panasonic MCUL429 Vacuum has a HEPA filter and accessories that allow you to be more thorough and get into tight corners. This vacuum also comes with an attachment that pulls pet hair—another potential allergen—out of upholstered surfaces. More information can be found at www.shop.panasonic.com. • Wash or freeze stuffed toys. If your child sleeps with their favorite stuffed animals, you should frequently wash or freeze them in a plastic bag for 48 hours. This will lower the level of dust mites which can trigger asthma and allergies. • Use slipcovers. Slipcovers have come a long way in the last ten years. Since they can be cleaned regularly and more easily than upholstery, consider using them on sofas and other furniture. • Keep ragweed outside. After spending time outside, have your child leave any clothing or sports equipment close to the entrance of the home to avoid tracking irritants throughout rooms. “Just because the pollen count isn’t through the roof doesn’t mean you can’t fall prey to allergies,” says Wilson. “With regular cleaning, you can manage the irritants in your home and make it a more breathable place. n
