Piedmont Virginia Community College and the University of Virginia offer workforce development for adults eager for new skills, challenges, and higher incomes. tax base compared to New Jersey and New York and Pennsylvania and Connecticut and California. “Access to the city is another plus— the County actually surrounds the city, so you are in Albemarle County almost immediately as soon as you leave the city of Charlottesville in almost any direction. So access to the employment center of the area is pretty convenient.” Those jobs are close and there are plenty of them—Albemarle County enjoys an unemployment rate of only 2.6 percent itself, lower than state and national averages. Its strong economy is also diversified, driven by services, manufacturing, education, retail, tour-

ism, trade, care and social assistance, technical and professional services and agriculture sectors. In 2016 the top ten employers of County residents were, in order, the University of Virginia, County of Albemarle, Sentara Healthcare, State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance, U.S. Department of Defense, University of Virginia Medical Center, Atlantic Coast Athletic Club, Piedmont Virginia Community College, Northrop Grumman Corporation, and Wegmans. County students get prepared for good jobs by a school system ranked among the top ten percent in the state, with low student-teacher ratios and

high test and SAT/ACT scores and graduation rates. Piedmont Virginia Community College and the University of Virginia offer workforce development for adults eager for new skills, challenges, and higher incomes. Retirees love being close to not one but two top hospitals. The University of Virginia Medical Center is a general medical, surgical and teaching facility nationally ranked by U.S. News & World Report. Martha Jefferson Hospital, now part of the Sentara health care system, was founded in 1903 and expanded to 176 beds in 2011. Now located in the Pan-

tops area, it is especially convenient to residents east of town. Yes there are wonderful educational and career opportunities here, and such great things to do when work is through. This is apple country—and grape and hops country too. That means an abundance of orchards and cideries, wineries and breweries. “What’s most important to me is the security,” declares a Fluvanna resident we’ll call Saul because he doesn’t want us to use his real name—for security reasons, of course. He and his wife have a business on Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall and protect both their home and their store with cameras linked to his smart phone. “We use inexpensive motion-activated ones, he says, “and we don’t subscribe to any online services.” If a camera detects activity when there should be none, the system he set up sends an audio alert to his phone. “You can select the level of sensitivity you want,” he explains, “and even the size of the figure for alerts so our dogs don’t set off the home alarm.” He particularly likes a feature that reports if their garage door is safely shut and he can open or close it remotely. Smart doorbells can include an image of who’s at your door and alert your phone as well. Some devices include facial recognition, so a surveillance system won’t be triggered for people you know. New wrinkles in smart-ology—some just novelties and others both clever and useful—appear, seemingly, daily. For instance, an interesting safety app automatically releases smartlocks if a smoke alarm is triggered or a 9-11 call is made. This allows responders immediate access to the home.

Caveats Not all devices and apps are good choices and many are rather expensive. In addition, they are becoming more complicated to use for un-tech-savvy consumers.


What’s Next? Increasingly we are living in a wireless world with people—and their homes—adopting this “smart” lifestyle. This home technology offers a real edge for home sellers, especially in appealing to Millennial buyers. In the coming years, a home’s “smartness” will become an expected amenity. The primary smart-home device providers are Google and Amazon. Unfortunately many people end up with different brands and incompatible devices, so must have several apps to control everything.
