“T

he beautiful spring came, and when nature resumes her loveliness, the human soul is apt to revive also.” – Harriet Ann Jacobs So here it is Spring 2020. Hard times come and hard times go, and Historic Garden Week, an annual rite of spring, isn’t happening this year, but the season’s beauty defies cancellation, lifting the spirits, and making grown men and women want to dig in the dirt. Look out the window—that’s not a livestream, those are real live flowers blooming. “When the world wearies and society ceases to satisfy,” as the 19th century poet Minnie Aumonier put it—or when society is temporarily ill-advised—“there is always the garden.” Virginia’s garden clubs have been celebrating spring’s new birth and making it even lovelier for over a century now. “I’d always tended to think of garden clubs as an excuse for idle well-to-do women to socialize,” says one avid local gardener. “But I was wrong. Members were serious hands-on gardeners, and believed deeply in the importance of gardens to society in the new post-agrarian United States.” They banded together in 1920 to found the Garden Club of Virginia; they hosted a flower festival in 1927, that raised $7,000 to restore original trees at Monticello; and at a luncheon in May of 1928 to raise funds for the restoration of Fredericksburg’s historic Kenmore Plantation, they dreamed up an even bigger idea: Historic Garden Week. Dubbed “America’s Largest Open House,” 29 tours showcase Virginia’s most picturesque gardens and private homes. Hosted by 47 member Clubs and 3,400 volunteers, it’s the largest volunteer effort in the Commonwealth, and has raised more than $17 million for the preservation of public gardens since it was first held in 1929. Preservation projects are currently underway at numerous locations across the state, including Monticello, Montpelier, Poplar Forest, Mount Vernon, and the Pavilion Gardens at the University of Virginia. Nearly 50 projects have been completed to date. Let’s look at some of the Garden Club of Virginia’s local affiliates.

Albemarle Garden Club “A group of passionate gardeners and conservationists located in Albemarle County,” Albemarle Garden Club is the oldest garden Club in the area, having been established in 1913, and is arguably the most historic. In 1927, Club member Mrs. William R. Massie established a medal to be awarded annually to a Club or Club member “accomplishing the most outstanding work in the protection, restoration or preservation of the natural beauties of our Commonwealth.” Its Regional Summer Flower Show at Farmington that same year was a precursor to Historic Garden Week. Today the Club counts as its goals stimulating the knowledge and love of gardening; restoring, improving and protecting the environment through programs and action in the fields of conservation, civic improvement and education; protecting native trees, wild

flowers, and birds; encouraging conservation of natural resources; promoting civic planting and encouraging roadside beautification; and aiding in the restoration and preservation of historic gardens in Virginia. Every autumn for the last 60 years the Club has offered the Nellie Hough Memorial Gardening Course, named in memory of the member whose idea it was in 1940. Open to the public, the course runs for six weeks and covers such topics as trees, shrubs, flowers, native plants, landscape design, pest management, and horticulture. Each class is held at a different location, usually in a garden, and features an expert speaker. Albemarle Garden Club also organizes the biannual Design Forum, which brings in nationally acclaimed landscape designers and authors. Past speakers have included interior designers Charlotte Moss and Bunny Williams, and architectural historian Richard Guy Wilson. Proceeds from both events fund local civic projects.

GARDEN CLUBS OF VIRGINIA:

100

Beauty YEARS OF

BY KEN WILSON

For Rivanna Garden Club president Martha Wertz, an art major in college, gardens are “amazing artistic creations.” Though she lives in a Charlottesville condo, Wertz speaks fondly of the delphinium, foxglove, and bleeding hearts in her flower garden in Maine, where she spends the summers. “I have an oldfashioned climbing rose that’s probably 30 years old. We have Joe Pye weed in the later summer that always has scores of monarch butterflies on it.” “I have learned so much about plants and gardens and gardens as creative things from being in a garden Club,” Wertz says. “Rivanna is a very diverse Club, with excellent horticulturalists, excellent artistic arrangers, and passionate conservationists. Our official Club flower is the lilac. One of our members maintains an historic collection of lilacs that goes back to our founding in 1922.” Since the 1930s Rivanna Garden Club has held a Christmas bazaar on the first Saturday in December. “We decorate and make wreaths, homemade desserts, soups and casseroles, and high-end artistic things and raise money through that,” Wertz explains. “Then we turn around and give that money away through proposals from area non-profits. The money we raise in December goes directly back into the community.” The Club awards annual scholarships to Nature Camp, a co-ed summer camp specializing in natural history and environmental science education, and to ARC, which holds natural history day camps. With Albemarle County’s approval and assistance, it has designed, planted, and maintained a “bio filter” (rainwater retention basin) in Claudius Crozet Park in Crozet. Members also participated in the Albemarle County Riverbank Project, which planted three thousand trees on the banks of the Rivanna River.

Dogwood Garden Club Eileen deCamp is a Piedmont Master Gardener, a Rivanna Master Naturalist, and President of Dogwood Garden Club. While it counts on 20 current members,

We provide arrangements for one of the UVA Pavilions for Historic Garden Week. I would like to do more in the community, but that will come as we grow our Club.” Meanwhile, Dogwood Garden Club is reviving a half-forgotten annual custom. “Every year at our May luncheon we bring May Baskets to decorate our tables, and then we take the flower baskets to a local senior living home. Last year I took them to English Meadows in Crozet and they were so happy to receive them and placed them on the tables in the dining room! Wouldn’t it be nice to bring back the tradition of May Baskets?”

Charlottesville Garden Club

FEATURE

Organized in 1949, the Charlottesville Garden Club has four mission goals: to restore historic gardens and landscapes, to conserve Virginia’s natural resources, to inspire a love of gardening, and to educate its members and the general public. Charlottesville Garden Club members have helped plant gardens at Penn Park, the Daughters of Zion cemetery, Blue Ridge Juvenile Detention, the McIntire Botanical Garden, and in a plot alongside Route 29 South. This February at Mon-

ticello it ceremoniously planted three sugar maples. The Club also provides financial support for ARC, the Daughters of Zion Cemetery, and Loaves & Fishes Food Pantry. One historic property that has benefitted from the Garden Club of Virginia’s conservation and restoration efforts is the Club’s original meeting place, Morven, just up the road from Monticello and Ash-Lawn. Thomas Jefferson once owned the 7,379-acre estate and referred to it as “Indian Camp,” for its proximity to a Native American settlement. In 1813 Jefferson deeded the land to David Higginbotham, a local merchant, who engaged regional architect Martin Thacker to design and build a three-story brick manor house in the late-Georgian/Federal Style. Samuel and Josephine Marshall bought Morven in 1906 and expanded the Main House with a two-story addition by Baltimore architect Howard Sill. It was at Morven that Josephine and eight other women formed the Albemarle Garden Club for “the study and culture of flowers.” Landscape architect Annette Hoyt Flanders restored its formal and cutting

gardens in 1930, adding entrance gates, 9 brick detailing, and slate seats, and making designs to plant shrubs, perennials, and annuals in a palette of purple, blue, pink, white, and yellow. The late John Kluge donated Morven to the University of Virginia Foundation in 2001. Kluge expanded the gardens, which today include tulips, pansies, phlox, lilacs, viburnum and deutzia, a dove tree, a pair of Osage orange trees, and a Chinese chestnut. Another longtime beneficiary of Garden Club tender loving care and expertise is UVA’s Morea Garden and Arboretum on Sprigg Lane, off Emmet Street just north of Alumni Hall. Jefferson’s choice for UVA’s first professor of natural history, John Patten Emmet, built Morea’s historic Federal-period home in 1830. Albemarle Garden Club planted its arboretum, which in addition to mulberry trees to feed silkworms, now includes hollies, native Virginia plants, plus Kentucky coffee trees, Osage orange trees, and a champion linden, in 1963. And now it’s 2020, which means that this May the Garden Club of Virginia will celebrate a century of service. “I think that the Club is as relevant today as it was 100 years ago,” Wertz says. “Our members work, we have different lifestyles than women did then, but I think that the opportunity to gather and be committed to something and work together is if anything more valuable in today’s world. Especially at this very difficult time, gardens are a reminder that the natural world is a solace. Growing things are a huge solace.”

DGC dates back to 1960 when participation was an easier matter. “Garden Clubs are having a hard time right now as members age and are no longer able to attend meetings and younger folks have jobs and children and can’t make meetings during the day,” deCamp says. “I think many garden Clubs are taking a look at how they can bring in new members by having evening meetings sometimes, or meeting on weekends.” In this moment unprecedented in living history, when meetings of all sorts are suspended, DGC members are staying in touch through emails and phone calls. “Today was Flower Friday,” deCamp says, “and we have been sharing photos of what’s blooming in our gardens along with a favorite springtime quote!” Since her election as President in May 2019, deCamp says, her focus has been on growing the Club, “so we have a larger membership to help with volunteer projects. I am working on getting to know members and bringing us together with fun field trips but still with a focus on design.” “We are proud that we were able to honor our military last Memorial Day. As you drive up to Monticello, you can see our Blue Star Memorial Marker in front of the entrance to Monticello Memory Gardens across from Michie Tavern. We are very proud of that and so thankful to our military members!” “As far as community service goes, we help with the tuition for a local student to attend Nature Camp every year. We provide flowers in the month of March every year to UVA Hospital so their volunteers can make up bouquets for

I first became a believer in reverse mortgages almost 20 years ago...

(before I was in the industry) when my parents first considered doing a reverse mortgage themselves. My Mom asked me to help her do some research and that’s what started me on my path of wanting to eventually be the expert on the subject. It’s amazing to me today that I still hear the same false rumors from people sometimes that I heard two decades ago. The mortgage company does not take title to your home and yes the heirs still inherit the home upon the borrower’s passing. Those are the two most misunderstood topics. And yes the money you receive is not income so it is not taxed as some people think. Also, Medicare and Social Security are not effected by the proceeds that you receive from a reverse mortgage. And yes it’s true that you are not required to ever make a payment for as long as you live in the home. I am very patient when I speak to clients and take my time explaining everything face to face with absolutely no pressure to move forward because I remember how much my parents appreciated it when the person that they worked with showed them the same respect. I have never experienced the Sunday night blues of knowing that you are going back to work the next day as some people talk about. My job is a career that I never plan on retiring from because I genuinely enjoy working with my clients and seeing how their lives are benefitting from eliminating debt and by opening up a line of credit that can be used to help them for the rest of their lives. Every client’s story is a little bit different but they are all hoping to achieve a better life and I enjoy being a small part in that story.

Reverse Mortgages for Senior Citizens Contact John for a no pressure meeting. A Reverse Mortgage can significantly increase your quality of life in retirement years by eliminating debt and providing funds to keep up with the cost of living. Please feel free to contact me to discuss anytime or schedule to meet in my office or in the privacy of your home. All meetings are absolutely no-obligation and confidential.
