ive point nine billion, that’s right. A whopping $5.9 billion is the estimated annual economic impact—just locally, mind you—of the University of Virginia, the region’s largest employer. And that’s just the dollars and cents. Good jobs and start-up opps; a teaching hospital nationally ranked in three adult and eight pediatric specialties; national baseball, basketball and lacrosse championships—Charlottesville without Mr. Jefferson’s university would be a pretty little Southern city. Charlottesville as graced by UVA is an economic and cultural dynamo that makes students, staff, faculty, and townies alike all proud. The University of Virginia’s 1,682-acre campus—pardon, “grounds”—is centered on the Academical Village (designed by Jefferson himself) and is one of the country’s most noble and gracious public spaces. But the University’s impact on the city of Charlottesville is incalculable. A school that offers 49 different bachelor’s degrees, 94 master’s degrees, 55 doctoral degrees, along with professional degrees in law and medicine and education attracts a lot of smart kids and turns out a lot smarter adults, many of whom fall in love with its history and culture and gorgeous Shenandoah Valley setting and decide to stick around. Lucky us. Skilled and educated, creative and entrepreneurial, these UVA grads could make it anywhere they like, and yet they choose to make it here; others come back later for active, productive retirements. In good times, they’re good company. In bad times, they can be lifesavers.
Crucial Help in a Crisis Take paramedic and UVA Health intensive care registered nurse Jessica Denomme, whose idea it was for UVA to aid first responders to the COVID-19 crisis by manufacturing PPE (personal protective equipment). Denomme contacted William Guilford, Assistant Dean for undergraduate education and Associate Professor of biomedical engineering at the School of Engineering.

An Economic and Cultural Dynamo BY KEN WILSON Thanks to Denomme’s initiative, 121 students and employees at the Curry School of Education and Human Development, the Darden School of Business, UVA Health, UVA Engineering, and the School of Architecture are working together—virtually, in safe quarantine—with area volunteers and businesses to provide masks, face shields, nasopharyngeal swabs and the like. “The team is composed of volunteers taking their time away from their fulltime jobs to help be a part of this endeavor,” Denomme says. “UVA is the main hospital that we support, however we have also grown to produce products for Martha Jefferson Hospital, local EMS agencies, skilled nursing facilities, and possibly even some grocery stores.” By rough count in early May, the team had sewn 96 masks and made more than 4,900 face shields (the goal is 10,000). It had manufactured two booths large enough for providers to stand in while testing patients without donning PPE, 37 camera stands for telemedicine iPads that allow personnel not wearing PPE to interact with hospital patients and medical equipment, plus 40,000 nasopharyngeal swabs and thousands of ear protectors—4,100 3D printed versions alone—to alleviate ear pressure for staff wearing surgical masks.
“Production is still ongoing,” Denomme says, “and we anticipate it to be ongoing for at least the next year, given the projected course for the virus and anticipated continued needs of health systems. The projects and production are really amazing to watch and see and they definitely show what a strong community we live in.”
Madison House Madison House on Rugby Road is all about commitment to community. Madison House matches student volunteers with local needs to “develop leaders, build community partnerships, and promote a lifelong commitment to service.” While the COVID-19 pandemic has made inperson work unsafe, Madison House has continued to serve as a clearing house, with more than 750 students signing up to help with two major spring semester, virtual volunteer initiatives. “Hoos Helping” matches volunteers with Charlottesville educators and school kids now studying at home. In “Hoos Helping Send Encouragement & Gratitude,” students write letters of gratitude and encouragement to people sorely in need of them during the current crisis. The “From Student to Scientist” program creates science experiment videos for teachers, schools and families. The Arts Mentors program assembles crafting
kits that let kids and volunteers make art together virtually. The “Adopt-aGrandparent Program” sends letters to “grands.”
OLLI Popularly known as OLLI, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Virginia (formerly the Jefferson Institute for Lifelong Learning) has been enriching the intellectual life of area senior citizens since 2001. OLLI offers a wide variety of courses, and in a manner tailored to seniors’ lifestyles. Classes are typically held once a week, in the daytime, and in places where parking is convenient. Many course instructors are themselves members. Members pay a membership fee each semester; course fees are separate. OLLI Special Presentations, on the other hand, are free lectures open to the public. While social distancing guidelines are in effect, OLLI is holding Zoom chats and program updates every Wednesday. Online courses are in the works.
UVA Research Park Developed by the University of Virginia Foundation in 1994, UVA Research Park is located in Albemarle County, approximately eight miles north of Charlottesville and adjacent to Charlottesville/ Albemarle airport and Route 29. The Park’s 562 acres and 3.7 million square feet of building space are zoned for office, light industry, hotel/conference center, laboratory/medical/pharmaceutical, and retail/support commercial uses. A Good Neighbor In March of this year, UVA announced a goal of developing 1,000 to 1,500 affordable housing units in Charlottesville and Albemarle County over the next decade on land owned by the University and the UVA Foundation. In a related effort, the University is forming four working groups on affordable housing, the local economy, early childhood education and the employment pipeline. Impressive Numbers Statewide according to most recent figures, UVA directly provides or indirectly supports 51,653 jobs—one in every 76 in the Commonwealth. A 2007 study by UVA’s Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service found that every dollar spent by the University generated $1.45 in local spending. Much of that spending is forward-looking. This past January the Batten Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the Darden School offered a three-day boot camp for students interested in venture capital and entrepreneurship designed to teach them about early-stage investing. But according to the National Venture Capital Association, Charlottesville is already the fastest-growing area in the country for venture capital. Venture funding investment in local companies rose from $250,000 to $27.7 million between 2010 and 2015. A 2015 Brookings Institution report noted that Charlottesville’s annual rate of first-round venture capital financing is nearly two and a half times higher than the national average. Over $65 million in follow-on funding has been invested in UVA research projects that have strong potential for improved healthcare as well as commercial and industrial applications. And according to AffordableSchools.net, UVA is one of the top 50 entrepreneurial schools in the country, for both its entrepreneurship centers and its top-ranked business schools. Its Licensing and Ventures Group (LVG) was recently recognized among six technology transfer “star performers.” UVA’s numerous and widely varied economic development activities include entrepreneurial development and startup creation, public and private partnerships, workforce and talent development, and infrastructure and funding. iLab Incubator supports student, faculty and community entrepreneurs in developing early-stage business ventures. LVG, located in the Coca-Cola Bottling Works with co-working space for Universitybased entrepreneurs, supports hundreds of invention disclosures, patent applications, commercial transactions and new company launches. Twenty-nine percent of UVA alumni in a 2014 study by UVA’s Darden School of Business identified themselves as “entrepreneurial,” but the real numbers were even higher: 19 percent were founders, 11 percent were early employees (one of a new company’s first five), 12 percent were board members, and 7 percent were investors.
