exhibition, The Inside World: Contemporary Aboriginal Australian Memorial Poles, may be enjoyed in a 38-minute YouTube video on its Exhibitions page. The Fralin’s education department has created online activity booklets, artmaking videos, and online programs for children. Visit the museum online and hit the Fralin from Home tab, or visit the Fralin Facebook page, for activities like the Mindful Art Virtual Workshop scheduled for Friday, June 5 from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. with author, illustrator, and YA graphic novelist Laura Lee Gulledge. Zoom into Art, for 7 to 12-year-olds and their grown-ups, is a 30-minute deep dive into one or two works of art followed by a short sketching activity. Led by UVA student museum educators and staff, it teaches kids to observe carefully, and talk about what they see to better understand it. Sessions are Wednesdays from 11:00 to 11:45 a.m., June 3, 10, 17, and 24. Registrations are accepted one week at a time, starting Thursday mornings for the following Wednesday program. Email the museum to register.

Virginia Museum of Fine Arts While the galleries of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond remain empty for the time being, the museum’s mission “to enrich the lives of all” continues. The word “Kamoinge” comes from Gikuyu, the language of the Kikuyu people of Kenya. It means “a group of people acting and working together.” In 1963 a group of African-American photographers based in New York banded together and called themselves the Kamoinge Workshop. Videos on ten Kamoinge artists may be seen on the VMFA YouTube channel. Elementary school students, grades K through 5, will find cut-out shapes and instructions online for Take and Make: Adorn an Indian Elephant, a hands-on activity celebrating the art of India.

t gives a new meaning to the word “staycation,” this ordeal does. Hanging around the house just to relax or to tackle home improvement projects can be pure pleasure, but this is something else again. What’s heavenly when it’s voluntary is . . . you get the idea. If the social scientists and opinion columnists are to be believed, we’re all fighting with our spouses and letting the kids watch hours of trash TV—when we aren’t tearing our hair out trying to homeschool them. Even with stores and

businesses beginning to reopen, this is a stressful time. But we live in an age of marvels we sometimes take for granted. In the past few months, as Zoom conferences, Facetime family get-togethers and livestreaming musical performances have become part of our everyday worlds, the electronic connectivity that had become almost humdrum has seemed like a godsend. Now about that vacation, the one we won’t be taking any time soon—technology can’t cure, but it surely can ease, the COVID-time blues.

Over at Wintergreen Resort in Nelson County, the Wintergreen Music Festival stands ready to hold on-site concerts this year if safety allows. Meanwhile, three online weekday Explorations series—online cocktail parties combined with interactive game shows—have been scheduled for Zoom viewing and participation. In addition to interactive Q&As with Erin Freeman and guest Festival artists, registered Exploration participants will have access to curated playlists, opportunities to socialize and interact with other music lovers, and the chance to win food and swag from Devils Backbone Brewing Company. The first Explorations series, How We Got Here—Music History with Erin Freeman and Special Guests, takes places Monday at 10:00 a.m. The topic for Monday, June 8: Baroque—Monteverdi, Lully, Vivaldi, Bach & More! with special guests Peter Marshall on piano and Sarah Kapps on cello. “Music and . . .” beginning Tuesday, June 9 at 10 will celebrate musical partnerships with the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond Ballet, and The Nature Foundation at Wintergreen.

Bubonic plague broke out repeatedly in England during the lifetime of William Shakespeare, whose work is performed at the American Shakespeare Center in Staunton. The company’s Blackfriars Theater is a faithful recreation of the Bard’s own indoor 1596 London theater. While the Blackfriars is closed, ASC is bringing it to our homes with BlkFrsTV, cinema-quality streaming video of their complete 2020 season. “Thrilling” is what esteemed Wall Street Journal critic Terry Teachout calls these productions: “These webcasts effortlessly convey the joyous experience of watching Shakespeare performed in Blackfriars Playhouse. Let ASC take your mind off your troubles as you commune at home with theater’s supreme genius.” Midsummer 90 is a 90-minute, NewOrleans-flavored production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Wading into a bayou of masked hobgoblins, enchanting nymphs, and imps who sing the blues, it’s “a play full of contemporary echoes that are both unexpected and unforced,” in Teachout’s words, “performed by ASC with a sober plainness of utterance that pierces the heart like a well-honed arrow.” Cymbeline’s daughter Imogen gets star billing in Imogen (aka Cymbeline), ASC’s take on Shakespeare’s fairy-tale classic. Disguises, mistaken identity, a missing head, and nefarious plots swirl through this riveting romance. Shakespeare’s isn’t the only classic work to be seen at Blackfriars. Frank Galati won a Tony Award for his adaptation of John Steinbeck’s 1939 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Grapes of Wrath set in the Depression-era American West. Streaming tickets begin at just $10. Ten percent of all funds raised through the sale of digital tickets and contributions will be dedicated to an Employee Relief Fund for ASC’s staff and artists currently on furlough.

The 33rd Annual Virginia Film Festival is still scheduled for October 21-25, 2020. While we wait and hope, the Beyond the Screen: A Virtual Conversation Series every other Wednesday offers more vibrant and wide-ranging conversations of the sort that have become a VAFF hallmark.

“As we thought about how to connect with our audience given the challenges we are all facing today,” said VAFF Director and UVA Vice Provost for the Arts Jody Kielbasa, “we kept coming back to our unique history of, and capacity for, presenting meaningful dialogue around the films we present, and the important issues that surround them. This series allows us to continue this tradition of deep and meaningful engagement while sharing the important voices of filmmakers and utilizing the knowledge and interesting perspectives of experts from both the UVA and local communities.” All conversations in the series are free, open to the public, livestreamed on Zoom, and archived on the VAFF’s YouTube channel. Films are available to rent or purchase through various streaming platforms prior to the scheduled discussions. Pre-registration is required for those conversations. Beastie Boys Story will be the topic of discussion on Wednesday, June 3. Participants will include educator, performer, rapper, promoter and director of Charlottesville’s 9 Pillars HipHop Cultural Fest,

Paramount Theater Your living room or home theater likely lacks the grandeur of the Downtown Mall’s 89-year-old Paramount Theater, but one film the Paramount is streaming on its website will transport you to even more opulent times and places: 15th cen-

Other offerings focus on some of the most interesting people of our day. Director Steve James (Hoop Dreams) and executive producers Martin Scorsese (The Departed) and Steven Zaillian (Moneyball) teamed up for Life Itself, a documentary on the life of renowned film critic Roger Ebert. Based on Ebert’s bestselling memoir of the same name, the film is personal, funny, painful, and transcendent. Bobblehead dolls of “the notorious RBG” have been selling for years, but the story behind the rise of Ruth Bader Ginsburg has been largely unknown, even to some of her biggest fans. RBG explores the life and career of this 85-year-old unlikely pop culture icon . . . and influential Supreme Court Justice.

The buildings may be closed to the public, but new books are still rolling in to the Jefferson-Madison Regional Public Library system. Our vital and civically engaged public library branches now provide curbside pickup service, plus a host of virtual clubs, workshops, story times and more.

Foodies ages 12+ will share recipes during the Zoom-facilitated meeting of the Cookbook Bookclub, Tuesday, June 9 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Attica Locke’s Bluebird, Bluebird will be the subject of investigation for the Mystery Book Group, Tuesday, June 23 from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. Visit the library website for a complete list on online opportunities. While the Staunton Music Festival has been postponed until August 13-22, 2021, classical music lovers can already enjoy dozens of performances from previous years on the Festival’s YouTube page. Later this month the Festival will enhance those selections with video introductions, lectures, and program notes. “We’re thinking of it as a way to amplify and deepen everyone’s appreciation of the music, composers, players, and process involved,” says the Festival’s Executive Director, Jason Stell. “The intro videos will range from players talking about their approach to the music, its interpretation and historical interest, to giving deeper insights into the piece itself with demos and analysis.” Connections will be drawn to other arts and historical eras: “anything we can do to show the richness this music brings to our lives.” Rough plans are for 20 such videos— two new releases per week for about ten weeks starting late June. Among the first will likely be Vivaldi’s Four Seasons concertos, accompanied by interviews of violinists Antti Tikkanen and Minna Pensola from Helsinki. Expect to also see new works from bandoneonist JP Jofre, pianist Andrew Willis talking about his own historical pianos and the Mendelssohn Capriccio he played last summer, and singers and scholars talking about key moments in JS Bach’s St Matthew Passion.
