originally from Spain, Andrés has been a tireless advocate for immigration reform and on July 4, 2014 was named by President Barack Obama as that year’s Outstanding American by Choice. Constitutional rights and national unity advocate and Gold Star parent, Khizr Khan, gave the keynote address at the 57th Annual Independence Day Celebration and Naturalization Ceremony at Monticello last year, before a crowd of nearly 2,000 people, including nearly 80 about to become America’s newest citizens. Brooklyn-born, but Ireland-raised, bestselling author Frank McCourt delivered a self-described “bad, short speech” in 2002, delighting the crowd with his memories of the New York skyline as seen from the ship bringing him back to America. His tongue-rolling delight in words like “lingerie” and “spaghetti” (themselves immigrants but now fully naturalized specimens of American English) was also an audience hit. Let’s look at a few excerpts from recent Monticello addresses to new American citizens, their families, friends, and assembled well-wishers.

t’s a bit ironic that so many inspiring words have been uttered at the home of a man known for his reticence as a public speaker. But when the home was built (by the man who penned the document that gave voice to our country’s Declaration of Independence from unjust and unrepresentative rule) the setting couldn’t have been more appropriate. “We hold these truths to be self-evident,” Thomas Jefferson wrote, and who among us can almost hear, if not recite verbatim, the rest of his profound and eloquent sentence? “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” This shining affirmation and statement of principles has drawn men and women across the globe to our shores, and every year on July 4 a few dozen of them take the Oath of Naturalization on the West Lawn of Monticello and join us as American citizens.

Of course, the actual date on which the country’s thirteen original colonies officially separated from Great Britain was July 2, 1776, not July 4. “The second day of July 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America,” future president John Adams wrote to his wife Abigail. “I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.” Adams was a prophet—but he was off by two days. That’s because the Declaration of Independence, after debate and revision, was not approved until July Fourth. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt spoke at the first Monticello Independence Day celebration, in 1936, President Harry S. Truman was next, in 1947.

Since 1963, when the Prime Minister of Australia, Sir Robert Menzies addressed the crowd, ceremonies have been an annual event. The speaker for this year’s virtual ceremony is internationally renowned chef José Andrés. Twice named to Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People list and recipient of the 2015 National Humanities Medal, Andrés is a culinary innovator, New York Times best-selling author, educator, humanitarian, and chef and owner of ThinkFoodGroup, a collective of nearly thirty restaurants throughout the country and beyond. In 2010, Andrés founded World Central Kitchen (WCK), a non-profit specializing in delivering food relief in the wake of natural and humanitarian disasters. Notably, his team served 3.7 million meals to the people of Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria and has since served many more in response to the COVID19 pandemic. WCK has partnered with restaurants, small farms, and local governments around the country to combat food insecurity. A naturalized U.S. citizen
