homas Jefferson called the Keswick area “the Eden of the United States.” You might say it still is, this lovely spot with its gorgeous, unspoiled countryside full of horse, cattle and sheep pastures, white farm fences, and heart-lifting views of the Southwest Mountains. Peace in the valley—that’s the Keswick lifestyle, with its lavish old estates, luxury inn, country club community, hunt club, vineyard and cidery. And only nine miles to the east is the city of Charlottesville, with all the cultural riches and world class health care that come with the University of Virginia. The name Keswick derives from an estate owned by one Reverend Thornton Rogers in the early 19th century, who named it after the home of the English poet Southey, in Cumberland County, England. Thornton himself operated a classical school on the property. No trace of that school remains today, but movie buffs are familiar with a little slice of Keswick, because the Maryland portions of the 1956 film Giant (starring Rock Hudson and Elizabeth Taylor) were filmed at the old Keswick train station

Keswick Hunt Club The 19 gentlemen who gathered at a home called Cloverfields in 1896 were “peaceful, law-abiding citizens, but dear lovers of the chase,” remembered one of their members, a Dr. Francis Lee Thurman. Their interest (and intent) was the pursuit of “Social Intercourse and Fox and Drag Hunting.” Their means was the founding of Keswick Hunt Club. Four hundred scenic acres are what attracted Al and Cindy Schornberg to Keswick. As a child Al heard his grandfather’s stories of working on the family’s French vineyard. As an adult, he made his fortune in the corporate world in Michigan, but when he and Cindy left and went looking for just the right spot to raise their kids, they had something else in mind as well—a vineyard. A six-year, countrywide search brought them to Keswick’s Edgewood Estate, where they founded Keswick Vineyards in the year 2000. The Schornbergs know what they are doing. Their first vintage, in 2002, won the prize for Best White Wine in America at the Atlanta International Wine Summit.

Since then, under winemaker Stephen Barnard’s direction, the vineyard has won three Virginia Governor’s Cups as well as numerous Gold, Double-Gold, and Platinum awards across the country. Their 2017 Heritage Reserve, a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, was recently named “best of class” at the American Wine Society, scoring 94 points. Their 2019 Chardonnay, Barnard says, is a great alternative to more familiar “oaky, buttery versions, which really do nothing to promote the grape.”

As part of its mission, it educates the public on the sport of fox hunting through local county fairs, steeplechase exhibitions, and farm tours. The Club’s annual “Barrister” award is named for one of Keswick’s finest hounds, “who had a great nose and really deep cry and whose offspring bear his resemblance and qualities today.” The Masters and Huntsman who present the award look for an individual who has excelled in working with the hounds during the off season, has well-represented Keswick and fox hunting, and has been willing to lend a hand whenever it’s been needed. The recipient receives a framed portrait of Barrister with his or her name engraved name upon it. Another Hunt Club tradition, the Thanksgiving Blessing of the Hounds in the yard of Grace Episcopal Church, dates to 1929. Prayers, hymns and a hunt follow, and funds are collected for local animal shelters and other charities.
