hat makes so many seniors want to spend their retirement in Central Virginia? If that’s the question, how long do you have for the answer? We could start with its natural beauty: its mountains, its hiking trails, and its lovely parks. There is of course “Mr. Jefferson’s University” and its sporting Cavaliers (“Hoos”) playing basketball, football, lacrosse and you-name-it for now virtual but still enthusiastic fans. Then we mustn’t forget the area’s abundant cultural offerings including the exciting restaurant scene in and around Charlottesville that a highly ranked school indirectly produces. And last—well not last, but last in this short list—there are our moderate winters and our topnotch medical facilities. As “a community of volunteers, supporters, members, and staff,” The Center is a place “to meet new friends, improve your fitness, expand your mind, broaden your skills, volunteer, and have fun.” It’s Happening at The Center, alright! The Center’s numerous presentations, crafts, fine arts, health, fitness, financial management and computer classes, along with its Lifelong Learning programs, support groups, and trips both nearby

and abroad make it the region’s hub for social and recreational activity. Travel programs range from slide shows with guest lecturers, to day trips and overseas excursions. Even in these difficult times, many Center programs still take place on-site. Many others are available on demand, to be enjoyed whenever one pleases, even when The Center itself is closed. Center members lead many of the Center’s 100 programs a week, and log

more than 40 thousand hours of volunteer service to the Center and other community organizations—work valued at almost $1 million by the Virginia Employment Commission.

Jefferson Area Board for Aging (JABA) One organization devoted to serving seniors is JABA (Jefferson Area Board for Aging). Working with state and local government, educational institutions, businesses, nonprofits and private citizens, JABA has been helping seniors to meet their needs all along the aging continuum in Charlottesville and the counties of Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa and Nelson since 1975. JABA’s services range from finance and health insurance counseling and estate planning, to home delivered meals, health and advocacy services, caregiver support, and respite care. Its Community Seniors Centers in Charlottesville and in Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, and Nelson counties serve hot lunches and facilitate day trips and other activities for adults with disabilities and/or age 60 and above. JABA also partners with senior housing providers in Charlottesville (Timberlake Place, Woods Edge, and Park View Apartments), and in Nelson County (Ryan School Apartments) to help seniors maintain independent and active lifestyles while interacting with their peers. JABA nurses provide regular health screenings and services at Park View at South Pantops, Ryan School Apartments and Woods Edge Apartments. “At Home with JABA” programs now being conducted via phone and internet

The presence of not one but two hospitals in Charlottesville alone, plus another in Augusta County, means that both primary and specialty care are readily available in Central Virginia. In addition to their main campuses, “Martha Jefferson and the University of Virginia have expanded to where you have satellite facilities that are like small hospitals that are essential to an aging population,” Hash notes. UVA maintains facilities not only in Charlottesville but in Culpeper, Zion Crossroads, and Orange as well. Sentara Martha Jefferson has four facilities in Charlottesville and one in Zion Crossroads.

Active Adult Communities Adults retired from work but not from productive civic engagement and lifelong learning are in good company around here. “People are typically living longer,” Hash says. “I’m seeing quite a spike of families coming here looking for multigenerational opportunities.” While many retirees settle in established, mixed-age neighborhoods, others seek out developments built specifically for the 55-and-not-old-yet crowd. Like traditional retirement homes—continuing care communities where residents can first live independently and then move to assisted living and health care facilities when necessary—the new “age in place” communities offer entry-level

These new model villages, virtual resorts for boomers entering not their second childhoods, but their second, carefree youths, offer amenities like pool and fitness centers, and bocce and tennis courts, that facilitate community and make for luxury living. Adults 55 and up enjoy, one level, low-maintenance living at The Villages at Nahor in Palmyra. Named for the intersection of Routes 53 and 636, called Nahor since the 1700s, the Villages consists of single-family and attached homes for which lawn, landscaping, and exterior home care are all maintained by the community. Homes are currently priced between $189 thousand and $394 thousand. The Villages’ extensive grounds include sidewalk lined streets, a heated pool and pool house, a fitness center with a quarter mile fitness track, a newly redesigned clubhouse, tennis and bocce courts, a playground and Tot-Lot for grandkids, community gardens, and a picnic pavilion with an outdoor fireplace.
