Goodman Allen Donnelly Announces Free Veterans Benefits Legal Clinic on Veterans Day, Wednesday, November 11 Pre-Registration for Virtual Clinic Now Open Goodman Allen Donnelly honors the nation’s Veterans with a Free Veterans Benefits Legal Clinic to take place on Veterans Day, Wednesday, November 11, 2020. The annual Clinic is a collaborative service of the Goodman Allen Donnelly Veterans Benefit Group, the University of Virginia School of Law, and the Maxine Platzer Lynn Women’s Center at the University of Virginia. The free Clinic, to be held virtually this year, is open to all veterans, retired military, and families of veterans now deceased. “The claims process can be daunting,” explains Kimberly Emery, Assistant Dean for Pro Bono and Public Service at the University of Virginia School of Law. “We are delighted that our student volunteers, working with attorneys from Goodman Allen Donnelly, can help veterans understand the full range of available benefits and the options that they have before them.” Participating Goodman Allen Donnelly attorneys are Dan Krasnegor, Nancy

Foti, David Lowenstein, and Erin Ralston, all experienced members of the firm’s Veterans Benefit Group. The Group has assisted over 2,000 veterans and their families to navigate the benefits maze, assisting them with unemployability benefits, non-service-connected pensions, increased ratings, earlier effective dates, widow’s benefits, education and home loan benefits, and more. “Our Veterans have given a great deal to ensure our safety and security,” says Ralston. “Regardless of how, when, or where they served, our Veterans and their families deserve the full range of benefits for which they are eligible.” Ralston also noted that because this event will be held virtually, the clinic will be open to veterans living throughout Virginia. The Veterans Benefit Group attorneys serve clients at all stages of the claims process, from the Regional Office to the Board of Veterans’ Appeals, to the Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims and the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.

Pre-registration for the virtual Clinic is required. There is no fee and no obligation. To register for the clinic, Veterans should call (434) 817-2187 or register online at goodmanallen.com. About Goodman Allen Donnelly: With more than twenty attorneys and offices in Richmond, Norfolk and Charlottesville, Goodman Allen Donnelly provides litigation and transactional services to a broad range of organizations and individuals. The Veterans Benefit Group has assisted veterans, retired military, and their dependents on claims for every sort of disability from post-traumatic stress disorder, to exposure to toxic materials.

SOPHISTICATED SPIRITS: Central Virginia Distilleries in 2020 BY KEN WILSON

I

t’s late 2020 and could anybody use a drink? Alright then. Thought so. How about an Apple Cider Smash, with Virginia Distillery Co.’s Port Cask Finished Virginia-Highland Whisky, apple cider, lemon juice, and cinnamon-brown sugar syrup? Or maybe you’d prefer something pure and simple like a single malt whiskey, say Spirit Distilling Lab’s Batch No. 7, “Jackalope / Rabbit Reaper,” with just a splash of water to bring out the notes of toffee, dried orange, candied citrus peel, and... too many more to mention. Complex, subtle, and oh so lovely to look at—this isn’t your great grandpa’s homemade whiskey. Hard liquor in these parts used to come in stoneware jugs—if you have one that’s a family heirloom, have you wondered about its provenance?—and go by the name of moonshine, a pretty term that surely referred to hours in which it was made, not its notorious bite, powerful kick, and occasionally lethal effect. Nowadays they still make it up in the hills, but instead of trying to hide it from the “revenuer man,” they advertise it on the internet. What’s lost in romance is gained in an ever-growing variety of delicious and sophisticated spirits. Today the native product is sold in elegant bottles and advertised online, where you can read vivid descriptions of its nose, taste and finish, and even its raw ingredients and how it was aged.

Tours are suspended until further notice because of COVID, but the Ragged Branch Tasting Room, located on a knoll overlooking the distillery and rick house and featuring a fireplace, covered porch, outdoor patio, and panoramic mountain views, is open Friday through Sunday, from 12 noon to 6 p.m. Reservations are not required. Ragged Branch also ships bottles inside the state of Virginia.

Virginia Distillery Company The late Dr. George G. Moore had a passion for single malt whisky. Emigrating from Ireland to the U.S. in the 1970s, George built successful businesses both here and in his native country. In 2011 he married his business acumen with his love of single malt and founded Virginia Distillery Company in Lovingston. Today, George’s wife, Angela, their son, Gareth, and his wife Maggie are living George’s dream. Using malted barley and fresh spring water, Virginia Distillery distills its whiskies in hand-hammered copper pot stills crafted in Scotland and makes good use of Virginia’s climate, allowing its broad temperature shifts to add depth to its whisky. “Have the courage of your convictions,” was one of George’s favorite sayings. His credo became Virginia Distillery Company’s core principle and the name of its newest American single malt line, Courage & Conviction. Distilled from 100 percent malted barley, Courage & Conviction is aged for a minimum of three years in three barrel types—bourbon, sherry, and Cuvée (from European red wine casks). Virginia Distillery’s Cider Cask Finished Whisky is finished for an additional eight to twenty months in casks sourced primarily from Virginia cideries. Its Port Cask Finished Whisky is finished in Port casks for a minimum of 12 months. Virginia Distillery Company is currently closed to the public. Check its website for curbside pick-up and shipping options.

Ragged Branch Distillery Over at Ragged Branch on Taylors Gap Road in southern Albemarle County, Alex Toomy and his two distillery partners “do it old school,” growing their own corn, rye and wheat, distilling them and patiently aging each bottle for more than four years. Toomey was enjoying a successful career as a builder and developer when he turned on the History Channel one night in 2009 and saw a Modern Marvels episode about American whiskey. He cold-called David Pickerrell, the bourbon artisan at Maker’s Mark, the very next day. Pickerrell “was real enthusiastic about helping us,” Toomy recalls. “We put our first barrel up July 14, 2010.” Ten years later, Ragged Branch offers seven different bourbons, both wheat and rye based. Its Signature Bourbon tastes of spicy rye with a hint of vanilla,

Waterbird Spirits

and a touch of caramel on the finish. Its Wheated Bourbon is warmer and sweeter than Signature, tasting of vanilla, caramel, and honey with a hint of cinnamon and a smooth and sweet finish. Both are aged in hand-picked Louisiana bar-

rels to honor the hometown of partner Chris Sarpy, whose family roots in New Orleans date back 300 years. Ragged’s Virginia Straight Bourbon is finished in barrels from Veritas Vineyards and Winery in Afton.

Do you ever come home ready for a nice drink but are too bushed to make one? The folks at Charlottesville’s Waterbird Spirits went to Richmond and testified before both House and Senate committees so you wouldn’t have to. After persuading the Commonwealth to allow the manufacture and sale of canned cocktails, the Waterbird team went into the vodka business in September, 2019.

Today Waterbird, which distills (but does not sell) its spirits on Water Street, starts with American grown potatoes and ends up with “Canned Cocktails Made with Premium Distilled Spirits”—six varieties, including Handmade Potato Vodka, Vodka Cucumber Mint, Vodka Citrus Squeeze, and Vodka Watermelon & Basil. Moscow Mule is crafted with ginger beer and natural flavors. Vodka Soda Lime marries vodka with carbonated soda water and natural lime flavor. Waterbird only uses cane sugar—no high-fructose corn syrup—and its drinks are gluten-free. All are available in local grocery stores.

his “early graying hair, overprotective demeanor and generally grumpy attitude” leavened with “unbridled exuberance.” What Christine and Lauren call themselves is “the only mother-daughter distilling duo in the country.” Together they produce vodka, gin, rye and bourbon and sour mash corn whiskey at Silverback Distillery, which Christine opened in Afton in 2014. In fact, Christine and Lauren are just the latest in a family of “proud, independent women” to make “top-line hooch,” a line that started with her great-grandmother, who made bathtub gin. It was on a family trip to Europe, after a visit to Ben Nevis Distillery in the highlands of Glencoe, Scotland, that Christine looked at Denver and said, “I am going to make whiskey.” An apprenticeship at a distillery in Washington State followed. The three Rigglemans buy Virginiagrown grain and Nelson County honey, distill it and donate the leftover mash to nearby farmers for use as fertilizer and livestock feed. “We’re also the first distillery in the country to use geothermal technology for our distilling process,” Christine notes.” Eco-consciousness and good whiskey— the Rigglemans have won numerous international awards, “and we didn’t enter Billy Bob’s Whisky Contest,” Christine boasts. “We entered the hardest spirits competitions in the world, and we have won 14 times; we’re not afraid to play with the big boys.” Silverback’s tasting room is currently open.

Vitae Spirits Distillery He started out brewing beer at his mother’s place, and now he makes whiskey in a school for troubled adolescents. Wait, it’s a former school. Ian Glomski is a fine, upstanding citizen—one of the creative bright lights who make Charlottesville such an exciting place to live. A budding scientist’s love for “the fruit of the barley” led him to a two-decade career in microbiology, and then led him full circle. “Making alcohol in some shape or form had been my life ever since I was 18,” he says. “It brought me back to becoming a distiller.” Thank goodness. Today Glomski’s Vitae Spirits produces 14 spirits in all: six rums, three gins, orange, coffee, and paw paw liqueurs, anisette, and a “Collab” with Champion Brewery. Much of what it uses to flavor its spirits—hardy orange, ginger, lemongrass, mint and cilantro, for example—is grown in the area, sometimes in Glomski’s own backyard. He doesn’t have to look much farther for inspired collaborators. Vitae’s Coffee Liqueur is cold-brewed with Mudhouse’s Intention Blend and blended with its own house-made sugar cane spirits under a blanket of argon gas that minimizes exposure to air and preserves freshness. Its Barreled Champion Collab is a socalled “beer whiskey” (what the Germans refer to as “bierschnaps”) produced with Champion Brewery beer and available in a series of one-time, get-it-now-or-missout releases. Vitae’s tasting room on Water Street is currently open.

Copper Fox Distillery

was inspired by the film Watership Down. It is made entirely by hand from mash to bottling using Virginia-grown-andmalted barley, and “obsessively inspected during each step of the process.” Lab products may now be tasted at the distillery by appointment only.

“When our founder Rick Wasmund was growing up, he loved the smell of different kinds of fruitwood when he would have fires, and he wanted to bring that into his whiskey,” says Peter Morganer, one of Copper Fox’s five distillers. In the spring of 2000 Wasmund made a journey to Scotland, home of more than 130 distilleries. He came away with an increased appreciation for the skill of whiskey makers, and a determination to make his own. He also accepted an offer to intern at Bowmore Distillery on Islay, one of the few distilleries in the world that still malts their own barley. Three years later in Sperryville he launched Copper Fox Whiskey and began making the world’s first applewood-aged whiskey, with the first malt floor and kiln in the U.S. since the repeal of Prohibition. Today the company’s flagship spirit is its single malt. “In Scotland they smoke their barley with peat,” Morganer says. “We were the very first distillery in the world to smoke barley with fruitwood— we smoke it with apple and cherry wood.” The company’s innovative methods now produce 13 different spirits in all, including single malt, gin, bourbon and rye. Copper Fox tours are on hold till further notice, but whiskey flights and cocktails are being served in its outdoor seating space.

Spirit Lab Distilling On a tiny stovetop in his New York City apartment is where Ivar Aass began “tinkering around” with making spirits. “Scotch, whiskey and spirits are life-long passions for me,” he says, “and I’d always wanted to learn how to make them.” From that earliest experiment, he was “instantly hooked. Even back then, I was sharing what I’d made with friends in blind tastings, and they were impressed, so I knew I was onto something.” Aass had lived in Norway, Indonesia and France before New York, but Charlottesville is where he moved in 2012, and where he opened Spirit Lab Distilling on 6th Street, SE. In December of 2016 the Lab released its tiny first batch of single malt: a 100 percent barley malt fermented from a wild yeast strain dating back seven years to that same NYC kitchen where it all began. The family’s old Norwegian moonshiner recipe was the inspiration for

the Lab’s Barrel-Rested Old Tom Gin. A sweeter and less juniper-forward alternative to typical gins, with notes of spruce, French lavender, fresh citrus zest, lemon verbena, baking spices of cardamom, star anise and clove, it’s distilled with 14 secret and proprietary botanicals. Old Tom was the base for the winning Crowd Favorite Cocktail, “Tom’s Envy,” in a recent Charlottesville’s Tom Tom Founders Festival Cocktail Competition.
