irginia is in fact the sixth-largest apple-growing state in the country, with roughly 150 commercial orchards growing apples on land yielding an estimated 700 bushels per acre. Seventy percent of that bounty is sold for processing. The rest finds eager buyers in 15 states and more than 20 countries. The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) calls the 2014 apple crop “very good,” as growers anticipate an abundant harvest of a healthy crop. “There are plenty of delicious apples available in Virginia,” writes VDACS Commissioner Sandra J. Adams in a recent report. “There are many consumers in our region, country and around the globe who look forward to Virginia grown apples each year.” So where are all these apples? Virginia apple country stretches from the mountainous northern Shenandoah Valley through the Roanoke Valley into Albemarle and Rappahannock counties, and Patrick and Carroll counties in the southwest. But the majority of apples are grown in the Shenandoah Valley.

Thomas Jefferson, First Citizen in these parts in so many ways, leads the field here too. “Cultivars of the earth are the most valuable citizens,” Jefferson wrote John Jay in August 1785. “They are the most vigorous, the most independent. . . . and they are tied to their country and wedded to its liberty and interests by the most lasting bands.” A farmer himself, Jefferson planted over one thousand fruit trees in Monticello’s South Orchard, including Hewe’s Crab and Taliaferro apple trees for making cider, and Newtown Pippin and Esopus Spitzenburg for good eating – one of his favorite pursuits. The Taliaferro, Jefferson said, was “the best cider apple existing,” producing a beverage “more like wine than any other liquor I have tasted which was not wine.” Today the Taliaferro is “Monticello’s mystery apple” – no one is sure what it was. Jefferson credited its discovery to Major Taliaferro of Williamsburg. According to an independent, 1835 description, the fruit was “the size of a grape shot, or from one to two inches in diameter; of a white color, streaked with red; with a sprightly acid, not good for the table, but apparently a very valuable cider fruit. This is understood to be a Virginia fruit, and the apple from which Mr. Jefferson’s favorite cider was made.” Jefferson

But discriminating visitors this fall will also find the Esopus Spitzenburg, and other varieties with intriguing names like Ashmead’s Kernel, Albemarle Pippin, Ralls, and Baldwin, plus the Grimes Golden and Summer Rambo, some of the first varieties to be grown in the New World. Virginia apple varieties require 90 to 175 growing days from spring bloom to fall harvest. That means the state’s apple harvest begins in July and extends through early November, with the majority being harvested September through November. Right about now, that is. This is the season when farms welcome apple aficionados, leafers, and anyone who loves fresh fruit and fresh air, with pick-your-own days and harvest festivals.

Albemarle County Located next to Michie Tavern, down the road from Monticello, Carter Mountain Orchard offers a 40mile view, not to mention peaches, white-fleshed peaches, nectarines, local veggies, and an abundant variety of apples. Vintage Virginia Apples and Albemarle CiderWorks are labors of love for the Shelton family, southern Albemarle County farmers since 1986 when Bud Shelton planted 20 fruit trees on newly purchased property. In 1992, inspired by heirloom apple tastings at Monticello, they began planting vintage varieties themselves. Today the Shelton family orchard comprises more than 200 cultivars, including two recent additions, GoldRush, a late 20th century variety developed by Purdue University, and MonArk, an early ripening cultivar from the University of Arkansas. Then Virginia Governor Tim Kaine spoke at the opening of the cider production facility, Albemarle CiderWorks, in 2009. Vintage Virginia Apples will hold its 14th annual Apple Harvest Festival on November 1, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Ruritan Club will make apple butter, and the club’s Brunswick Stew, cooked over a slow fire, will be ready in the early afternoon. Local musicians will play throughout the day. Families may take hayrides over the ridge above the orchard. Dozens of craft and artisanal food vendors will be on hand, along with local food vendors. Fresh cider will be sold by the cup, half-gallon and gallon. Hot cider will

be sold by the cup, and hard cider – best enjoyed one cup at a time! – will be available in the tasting room. Tours of the cidery will be given at 11:00 a.m. and 12:30, 2:00, 3:30 p.m. Apple tastings and lectures on horticultural topics will be held in the Events Tent. Charlottesville Cooking School will hold an Apple Pie Contest, with the winner receiving a $100 gift certificate to Vintage Virginia Apples and Albemarle CiderWorks, and the second place finisher scoring a $65 gift cer-

Nelson County Everette (E.O.) and Eva Drumheller established Drumheller’s Orchard in 1937, planting peach and apple trees on an unattended Lovingston farm. When the couple’s son Darrell began helping in 1957, he designed a 110-gal-

lon apple butter kettle with an electric stirrer. The Drumheller family began holding fall festival in the 70s. The 2014 festival, September 27-28 and October 18-19, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., will feature hayrides to the pumpkin patch and corn maze, two apple sling shots, crafters, live music, fresh cider, apple pies, breakfast and lunch offerings by the local Ruritan Club and other vendors, and “a good family atmosphere.” Drumheller’s has Summer Rambo, Early Avul Fuji, Gala, Jonathan, Grimes Golden, Golden Delicious, Red Delicious, Mutsu, Stayman, Winesap apples for sale now. Rome, Black Twig, Fuji, Nittany and Granny Smith in mid-October. Arkansas Blacks and Albemarle Pippins in late October. Pink Ladies in early November. Seamans’ Orchard in Tyro in Nelson County grew out of a family agricultural business begun by the Lea brothers in 1933. Alton R. and Joyce Lea Seaman took over the farm in 1945. Third and fourth generation Seamans still operate the orchard and live on the land today, growing Jonathan, Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, VA Gold, Mutsu, Jonagold, September Wonder (Early Fuji) and Empire apples. Homemade apple cider is also available. Pick Your Own days in October are Saturday and Sunday, the 11th and 12th. The 2014 Apple Butter Festival with pick-your-own-pumpkins, children’s games, food, crafters, a corn maze, live music and a clown is October 4 and 18, 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Also in Nelson County, Fitzgerald’s Orchard in Tyro, open Monday through Saturday during apple season, offers Red and Golden Delicious, Gala, Rome, Stayman, Granny Smith and York apples. Be sure you completely understand your deductible coverage. In general, the higher your deductible, the lower your premium, but there’s a catch. Many insurers have sidestepped the risk of severe weather damage through percentage deductibles on claims resulting from hurricanes, tornados, windstorms, and hail. Instead of the fixed-dollar deductible on your policy, your deductible may escalate to between 1 and 5 percent (or even more in the case of earthquake) of your home’s total insured value.

Homeowners insurance isn’t a onesize-fits-all need. What’s important to know about homeowners insurance? “Be sure you have adequate insurance,” declares REALTOR® Janet Matthews, owner Charlottesville Town and Country. Almost all lenders require homeowners to purchase homeowners insurance and have proof of that coverage at closing. The borrowers may select any insurance company meeting the lender’s requirements. Remember, though, this insurance protects the lender. “Be sure the insurance guarantees not only the mortgage holder’s investment, but also your own,” Matthews continues. It’s best to have both borrower and lender listed as “insured” on the property. Coverage needs and costs vary from one property to another, so it’s important to understand the best coverage for

you. Visit the National Flood Insurance Program’s site, FloodSmart.gov to see if the property is at risk. If it is, there’s a federal program that accepts everybody, even if their insurer will not. In some cases flood insurance is mandatory and borrowers are required to show proof of flood insurance. Another consideration is earthquake coverage. Many people in this region were shocked—literally!—by the Louisa earthquake in 2011 that measured 5.8 on the Richter scale. The widespread damage to buildings cost an estimated $200 to $300 million. Only about $100 million of the losses were covered by insurance. More companies these days are excluding coverage for sewer backups and mold problems from their standard homeowners policies, but it may be worth an extra premium to have that protection. Having pets or a swimming

pool may also affect coverage as well as being at a distance from a firehouse. “Finally, make sure you have what is known as an umbrella policy,” Matthews advises. “When you use the same provider for multiple policies, you can generally get a discount on that ‘umbrella’ which covers many of the things that aren’t covered by traditional liability insurance.”

The Fine Print Is Important Be sure you really understand the “fine print” before you sign on the dotted line. “Read your policy carefully,” counsels Matthews. “It’s not helpful to find that things aren’t covered after the fact.” Probably the biggest error people make is to underinsure their property. While a substantial portion of the purchase price is often for the land itself, it’s important to have enough insurance to cover the cost of rebuilding, which may be more than the current value of the home. Get a solid estimate of rebuilding from a local insurance agent, REALTOR®, contractor, or a paid professional home-replacement cost estimator. Some policies have an automatic annual coverage increase or guaranteed replacement. Special-value property like jewelry, fine art, antiques, and collectables require extra insurance—called riders or floaters. Business property and items such as boats also require separate coverage.

Insurance is designed to protect against disaster, points out www.ConsumersReports.org, but when disaster strikes, your insurer might not live up to your expectations, especially if you have a claim of $30,000 or more. A survey of nearly 10,000 Consumer Reports subscribers who filed claims in the last few years showed the greater the damages, the greater the likelihood of disagreement with the insurer. Be proactive in finding a company that is a good fit for you. Ask friends who are happy with their coverage and service. You might start with the company already covering your car, since insurers often offer discounts for multiple policies. Get a quote, then compare rates and coverage to others. You can find quick quotes online by applying for a policy, but not finalizing it. It’s a good idea to check with at least three insurers for prices and coverage. Check the Internet for information on specific companies. Googling “rate home insurance companies” will give you a number of unbiased ratings from a variety of independent sites such as Consumers Reports. Bear in mind that lots of ads on TV don’t necessarily equate to good service. “If someone in your family has served their country in the military,” REALTOR® Matthews mentions, “it’s good to know there are companies such as USAA offering discounted coverage to those people and others in their families, even grandchildren.” Some people turn to independent insurance agents who represent a number of companies, deal with the fine print, and can find the specific coverage options you need. Some companies offer lower rates because of smoke detectors, sprinkler systems, or a central alarm system ringing to a security company. Reduced premiums are often offered for multiple-policy coverage such as auto insurance, insurance on other properties, life or disability insurance. n Marilyn Pribus and her husband live in Albemarle County near Charlottesville.
