Charlottesville Area Association of REALTORS® (CAAR) has announced that Wendy Peery of Judy Savage and Company Realtors is the third quarter Good Neighbor Award recipient. The Good Neighbor Award program highlights local REALTORS® who dedicate significant time and interest to projects that make a lasting impact on our communities. Wendy and her best friend, Kathy Dahlstrom, established Rooms for a Reason after Dahlstrom’s first bout with cancer. The organization’s mission is to help support the healing process for individuals who are confronted with cancer, a long-term illness or disability by providing an inspiring and comfortable living space. Peery dedicates two to 20 hours per project depending on the size of the room, and has decorated over two-dozen rooms with Dahlstrom. “While Wendy and Kathy are modest about their work for Rooms for a Reason, they are making a lasting impact on those they are helping. The feel of a room can truly influence one’s recovery, especially after receiving chemotherapy or another intense treatment,” said Anita Dunbar, CAAR president-elect and associate broker at Montague Miller & Company.

“Wendy and I have been friends for 16 years; we both love to yard sale and decorate. After my first bout with cancer I wanted to give back to others dealing with cancer. I didn’t have a lot of money to donate and wanted to personally do it for others what they could not do for themselves. I was inspired to start a free service for cancer patients of modest means, creating a soothing environment to heal in. I called Wendy and told her my ideas, we sat down for coffee and came up with the name Rooms for a Reason. She has always supported me and been the first to volunteer when I get a patient to do a room for. She is a wonderful person and a forever friend,” said Dahlstrom. A $250 donation was made to Rooms for a Reason in Peery’s name. For more information on Rooms for a Reason, visit www.virginia-organizing.org.

It’s a hot ticket on a cold night, an alcohol-free, family-friendly way to ring in the New Year with everything from blues to bluegrass, belly laughs to belly dancing, and a whole lot of community spirit. It’s First Night Virginia, a festive and affordable Charlottesville tradition dating back to 1982, when Charlottesville was only the second city in the nation to hold a First Night event. Dozens of performers will take part in forty different programs in this 33rd annual celebration of the arts starting at 3:00 p.m. New Year’s Eve on the Downtown Mall.

Innovative Juggler Cirque du Soleil veteran, and twotime International Juggling Champion, Greg Kennedy is at the Paramount Theater at 4:30 and 6:15 p.m. for this year’s Main Event. An “Innovative Juggler” who mixes unique performance pieces, traditional juggling and clean comedy, Kennedy started out as an engineer but realized he was spending all his free time working up juggling routines. Offered a chance to entertain in Japan in 1997, he arranged for a leave of absence from his job – and never went back. Then again, he never really quit. Most jugglers work with balls, clubs, and rings. Kennedy applies engineering principles to expand the art form, bouncing or rolling objects, some of his own invention, even creating whole structures to juggle in. “A ball is equal in its moment of inertia on all sides,” Kennedy says. “A club is much longer in one direction than the other two; a ring is much larg-

from my standing wheelchair so let the good times roll.” Leake performs in a wheelchair because he has FSH muscular dystrophy, a slowly progressive disease. “When standing became difficult in 1997, I began performing from a bar stool,” he remembers. “I bought a scooter in 2002 because walking in public had become dicey, and I would perform from it or transfer to a bar stool. In 2007 I stopped being able to walk or stand and I bought a used standing wheelchair.” A winner of the Governor of Virginia’s “Caregiver of the Year” award for his role in providing in-home care for his father, and the “National Humor Treasure Award’ for his work in the field of positive, life-affirming humor, Leake compares his clean routine to the Sesame Street song, One of These Things is Not Like the Others. “Which of these things doesn’t belong here?” he cracks. Leake will be at the Paramount Theater at 7:30 and 8:45 p.m.

Dance Performances How many Central Virginians know that Charlottesville has a professional belly dance company dedicated to “education through entertainment”? “We draw from a number of countries and cultures,” says Shaheen Alikhan of Fata Morgana Bellydance Troupe, a local institution since 1988. “We specialize in live-music performances. Our primary musician is a drummer, with doumbek, tupan and frame drum, but he also plays mandolin and violin. One of our dancers also plays flute, and has a spectacular voice; I and the other two girls sing and drum in addition to dancing.” Fata Morgana will play two fun, family-friendly, and interactive shows at the Carver Rec Center’s Multi-Purpose Room at 6:15 and 7:30. p.m. African dance has a home here too. Chihamba is a non-profit community

er in two directions than the other one. This creates different stabilities for them when they’re thrown and caught. I’m taking that even further, taking the physics of it, experimenting with how a ball will bounce or roll on different shapes, or how different objects like bowls will roll on the floor. I use a lot of math in the creation of my work.”

touching and amusing audiences since 1983. “A night of clean standup, with its focus on the small slice-of-life moments of everyday life, can be a great way to end one year and begin another,” he says. “The laughter provoked is as much from the joke as it is from the bond formed sitting in a room together recognizing a shared experience. The Honey Dewdrops Laura Wortman and Kagey Parrish may not be locals anymore, but aficionados of acoustic and high lonesome music still know them as the Honey Dewdrops. Now based in Baltimore, they play stages across North America, sharing “stretches of rolling, infinite roadway” and “a hunger to pay attention to what endures.” The Dewdrops’ tight harmonies and clean pickin’ on clawhammer banjo, mandolin and guitars are intended “to leave listeners with only what matters: the heart of the song and clarity over ornamentation.” Their 2012 release, Silver Lining, was a Top Ten record on national folk and Americana stations. The songs on their fourth full-length album, slated for release in the spring, are “raw and engaging, with characters and images from kindred people and places. These new songs rock and reel, and then they console you when you come back down.” The couple will bring their hand crafted folk songs, Appalachian fiddle tunes, and a cappella spirituals to the First United Methodist Church sanctuary at 6:15 and 7:30 p.m.

Dylan-avoidant dance fans will have a couple of chances to let loose. At Key Rec Center, salsa lovers can make merry at a Latin Dance Party with DJ Kevlar & Flaco. At the Omni Ballroom, guitarist Aric Van Brocklin, alto sax man Andy Rowland, bassist Victor Brown, keyboardist Edward “Skip” Haga, and drummer Michael Taylor – better known as Chicken Head Blues Band – will bring the sound of the Big Easy to Central Virginia, with upbeat boogie-woogie and rhythm and blues. History History-minded First Night-ers, meanwhile, can commune with shades of New Year’s Eves past on the Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society’s Spirit Walk, a 30-minute moonlight tour of historic Charlottesville, where they’ll encounter apparitions of previous inhabitants. Tours are limited to 25 people apiece, and will leave from the Albemarle County Courthouse at 6:30, 7:00, 7:30 and 8:00 p.m. From 3:00 to 6:30 p.m. in the McIntire Building on 200 Second St. NE, the Historical Society will hold an open house in conjunction with the opening of “The Great War,” a display marking the Centennial of World War I, in commemoration of the county and the University of Virginia’s role in the war effort. Going even further back in time, Bob O’Connor has authored six books on the Civil War. “Lincoln’s Body-

guard” is O’Connor’s one-man show on the 16th president of the United States and Ward Hill Lamon, the man who slept on the floor outside what’s now known as the Lincoln Bedroom. The show begins with their first meeting and includes Lincoln’s stint on the 8th Judicial Circuit, the Republican National Convention, the train ride from Springfield to the inaugural in Washington, the years of his presidency, his assassination, and his long funeral train trip. O’Connor will reenact these scenes at 7:30 and 10:00 p.m. at Old Metropolitan Hall. Not to be outdone on his home turf, Charlottesville’s own Thomas Jefferson will appear at Old Metropolitan Hall at 4:15 and 6:15 p.m. Thomas Pitz, a.k.a. Mr. Jefferson, actually lives in Orange County, but close enough. Long an aficionado of Revolutionary Era history, Pitz has been impersonating Mr. Jefferson since 1987. He considers it “an honor and a privilege to bring one of America’s greatest historical figures back to life.”

For Kids As always, First Night-ing families can choose from a variety of events for children, this year at the east end of the Mall near the Pavilion. Richmond juggler, magician and comic Jonathan Austin will dazzle, confound and amuse at the Key Rec Center 3:00 and 4:15 p.m. The Crooning with Critters program, at 3:00 and 6:15 p.m. at the Goodlife Theater, will take kids on imaginary musical journey from the farm to the

Counting Down to Midnight Five performances will begin at 11:15 p.m. and run till 2015. Red & The Romantics will play at Christ Church’s Meade Hall. The group “is going on three years old and we are very excited about First Night Virginia 2015,” says its songwriter, Erik “Red” Knierim. “Our band is known for getting people dancing with the jumpin’ slappin’ upright bass of Steve Riggs, the sensational singing and accordion playing of

CENTRAL VIRGINIA IS PRIME ANTIQUING TERRITORY. “We have good quality, good selection, and decent prices,” declares Charlie Taylor, manager of the Ruckersville Gallery, with 30,000 square feet of area, nearly 90 dealers and about 200 consigners (who pay a commission to the Gallery to market their goods), is typical of the “antique malls” proliferating all over the country. “We’ve got everything from flatware to furniture,” he says. Whether you are a casual shopper, an amateur collector, or someone who takes antiquing very very seriously, it can be a lovely way to spend an afternoon or even a weekend on the road. In fact, there are websites that will help you plot a route.

Antiquing IN CENTRAL VIRGINIA BY MARILYN PRIBUS

CAAR REAL ESTATE WEEKLY WWW.CAAR.COM

HOUSE & HOME

Shopping, shopping, shopping Television shows like PBS’s “Antiques Roadshow” and “America’s Lost Treasures” on the National Geographic Channel reflect an ongoing interest in antiques and the lure of discovering something “big.” You can find antiques and collectibles in shops, at shows, in malls, even at garage sales. Taylor has some suggestions for the beginning shopper. “Make up your mind what you want to collect,” he says. “It’s such an individual basis, so choose what you personally like. It’s fun going out and finding things that will work in your collection.” Antique and collectibles malls, with many vendors under one roof, are a great place to get your feet wet and possibly discover your particular interest. In addition, owners, managers, and vendors alike have a definite interest in policing their businesses by excluding dishonest dealers and this protects shoppers. Because malls are big, they are often located in more rural areas where the rent is lower. In some cases, vendors work one or more shifts a month, which also keeps costs down. Others have paid staff. There are several large malls in the region including one in Ruckersville, The Covesville Store south of Charlottesville, the Tuckahoe Antique Mall in Nellysford, the Strasburg Emporium to the north and others which are listed on the Internet. Once you’ve found your “thing,” you may be ready to move on to more

Gasoline Alley on Preston Avenue right in Charlottesville has a niche (not surprising, given their name) for “petroliana” as well as “breweriana,” antique and mid-Century furniture, architectural elements, and more. Patina Antiques, etc. [etc. is part of the name] is on East High Street in Charlottesville and stocks what they term “a true hodge podge” of fine antiques and brand new items from furniture to functional accessories. This mix fits well into the eclectic décor many people choose these days. The Curious Orange Store on Ivy Road in Charlottesville specializes in casual European antiques from the 18th to 20th centuries. Stock includes furniture, lamps, art, mirrors, and other items.

Shopping wisely

specialized dealers and there are a number in our area. The Internet is a great tool, because many shops have comprehensive websites with photos of items currently in stock. Here’s a quick sampling of some shops in the Charlottesville area. An example is Kenny Ball Antiques in Ivy Square in Charlottesville. Chloe Ball started working straight out of college at her father’s shop about a dozen years ago. Compared to antique malls, she says, individual stores typically have a niche. “For example, we specialize in 18th and 19th century

French, English and Italian antiques,” she says. The shop has been in business about 30 years. “We used to go to France every other month,” she says, “but now we can buy online at auctions.” She says that some shoppers have one special particular thing in mind while other people find things and make them special. The niche for Oyster House Antiques on Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall, is antique Chinese furniture, which the owner and staff purchase in China. They also stock jewelry, scrolls, figurines and other items.

Whether you are a casual shopper, an amateur collector, or someone who takes antiquing very very seriously, it can be a lovely way to spend an afternoon.

Before you start the hunt, it makes sense to educate yourself. The Federal Trade Commission publishes some standards. By law, an antique is more than 100 years old. Collectibles are simply what a person chooses to collect; however a vintage collectible is defined as at least 50 years old. A reproduction is created to resemble an antique, but there is no added value. “Repro,” on the other hand, is a term describing a reproduction deliberately created to deceive buyers. Price Guide Books are filled with information, photos, and average retail prices. Some are general while others deal with specific categories such as pressed glass or dolls. Online guidebooks show pictures of items with fairly accurate ranges of prices. Values aren’t exact, of course, because they can vary with an item’s condition and even by location because some things become “trendy” in certain regions. Always get a written receipt including the seller’s name and contact information, a description of the item, including age, origin, the price you paid, and a written guarantee. If the seller is not willing to guarantee an item, the price should reflect this uncertainty. The bottom line is that antiquing is an enjoyable way to spend a day finding treasures, gifts, home décor, or simply items that appeal to you. n Marilyn Pribus and her husband live in Albemarle County. When it’s time to buy a present for a wedding or special birthday, she hunts for antique sterling silver pieces already monogrammed with a suitable initial.
