Yoga Fundraiser Local nonprofit Building Goodness Foundation (BGF) and Open Heart Yoga Center will partner to host a weeklong fundraiser for the nonprofit. Between Monday, May 18 and Friday, May 22, the center will donate $2 to BGF for every person that attends a yoga or meditation class. For this one week, community members are encouraged to sign up for yoga and meditation classes to benefit BGF. These classes will do more than quiet the mind or align the chakras, they will improve our entire community by providing support for BGF to build and renovate local homes and nonprofit facilities. These funds will go to support BGF’s work in Central Virginia, including upcoming partnerships with Rockfish Wildlife Sanctuary, the Mattaponi Indian Reservation, the Rivanna Trails Foundation, and others. Major Impact on the Local Economy With nearly 14,000 faculty and staff, UVa is the area’s largest employer, which contributes to stable employment in the community. Its payroll of $1.4 billion in the academic year 20112012 (the most recent figures available) plus expenditures for services, supplies and maintenance directly impact the community. Construction and renovation are also substantial economic

In 2013 (the most recent year for records), the Healthcare System treated nearly 800,000 outpatients, almost 30,000 inpatients, performed close to 20,000 surgeries, and handled more than 60,000 ER visits. At the same time, it provided millions of dollars’ worth of free care through financial aid and Medicaid. Charitable Activities UVa employees and students are generous with both dollars and time. For example, close to 7,000 hours are donated to the Charlottesville Free Clinic with a value of about $7.5 million. Each September, during the National Day of Caring, about 1,000 volunteers pitch in on nearly 100 projects in Charlottesville and surrounding counties. Their efforts range from painting schools to construction, landscaping, visiting the elderly, and more. University students also volunteer on a regular basis with area rescue squads. Day care centers, and animal shelters. In a typical year, they provide well over 5,000 hours of tutoring and assistance to area youth at more than 20 community locations while the Young Women Leadership Program mentors eighth- and ninth-grade girls addressing issues related to self-esteem, scholastic achievement, and decision-making. The largest student-volunteer effort is Madison House which recruits, trains and mentors over 3,300 student volunteers each year. These students contribute more than 10,000 hours of

community service directly impacting some 15,000 residents in our region. Finally, at the end of the academic year, UVa students donate household goods and furniture to support regional nonprofit organizations serving low-income residents through Chuck It For Charity and the Sofa Shuffle.

Community Outreach “The university gives such an energy to this town,” says longtime resident Ronna Gray. She and her husband, Les Pearlstein, were employed by UVa some years ago and stayed in town when they moved on to other employment. Gray is only one of many people in Charlottesville who cite the presence of UVa as an important factor in their decision to live here. “I wouldn’t call myself an intellectual,” she continues, “but I appreciate the intellectual life of the university. We have friends who are on the faculty and other people in Charlottesville are connected too, and that makes for an interesting community. We love taking visitors on tours of The Grounds and we also enjoy going to basketball games.” Every year the UVa serves over one million people like Gray through more than 500 public service and outreach programs. Through OutreachVirgin-

ia, local residents can find interesting programs in music and drama, opportunities to volunteer at UVa, and the chance to learn how the university and the community are engaged. Musical treats include the Charlottesville & University Symphony Orchestra comprised of music faculty members, talented students, and community musicians. The Orchestra presents concerts, has a special program to introduce community youth to orchestral instruments and performs a free Symphony Under the Stars. The annual Messiah Sing-along is an institution for many in the region inviting community singers and orchestra members to join in. In addition, there are a number of other musical groups from chamber music to jazz to singing ensembles offering concerts. Free Lunchbox Recitals are presented throughout the academic year and a Music Department Colloquium is free to the public and convenes on select Friday afternoons. The Miller Center is another wonderful resource, offering hundreds of free lectures. The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, designed for seniors and affectionately called OLLI, was inspired by Thomas Jefferson’s deeply held view of education as a lifelong enterprise to invigorate the mind.

Volunteer course instructors are specialists in their fields—many are professors from UVa and other universities across the United States. “I’ve taken a lot of OLLI courses,” says Gray. “There’s such a variety available. For instance, I’ve taken courses on the circus, on Islam, and on opera appreciation.” The Fralin Museum of Art, about a block from the Rotunda, is open to the public Tuesday through Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Admission is free and the museum is accessible to individuals with disabilities. Changing exhibitions might spotlight an individual artist, a particular art form, or a special theme. The permanent collection consists of approximately 13,000 objects and many items are available for study in the collection and through virtual digital access. Highlights of the collection include European and American painting, photography, works on paper, African and American Indian art. UVa’s presence in Central Virginia underpins the entire area with a strong contribution to the economic, education, and n social fabric of the community. Marilyn Pribus and her husband live in Albemarle County near Charlottesville. When the leaves are off the trees in winter, they can see UVa’s main hospital from their home.

Since water is one of your main resources for maintaining a beautiful lawn, you should plan to use vegetation that is native to your region, uses minimal water and requires nominal care.
