Virginia Humanities’ award-winning public radio show With Good Reason has partnered with James Madison’s Montpelier to produce a five-part podcast series that will explore connections between constitutional history and contemporary issues, with an emphasis on the First Amendment. “As we’re doing research for the series, I’m becoming increasingly curious about connections between things like religious dissent in early America and Colin Kaepernick’s protest of racial injustice,” says producer Kelley Libby. “We’re doing something special here, with a short series that’s hyper-focused on First Amendment freedoms. Through Montpelier we’ve also got unusual access to the scholars who are doing some of the most interesting work in this area.”
Libby will produce the series, which will feature sound-rich documentary storytelling and interviews with scholars. An associate producer at With Good Reason, Libby is also the creator and producer of UnMonumental, a public media program working this summer with undergraduate fellows of the Race & Racism Project at the University of Richmond to record and amplify oral histories of Black Alumni. Libby will work with a team of With Good Reason and Montpelier staff to research, produce, and market the upcoming podcast series. The series will launch on Constitution Day, September 17, 2018, in conjunction with Montpelier’s national survey that explores America’s understandings, perceptions, and attitudes towards the Constitution and how it is functioning today. Episodes will be released biweekly and will be broadcast on With Good Reason’s network of public radio stations. With Good Reason is Virginia’s first and only statewide public radio program. It is distributed by broadcast and podcast, but never before has the show offered listeners a digital-first product.

mer Music Festival & Academy comes to Wintergreen Resort from July 9 through August 5, and this year’s theme, Building Bridges: Celebrating The Connections That Only Music Can Make, extends the usual companionship and camaraderie ever further. As Freeman explains, it’s a humanitarian response to a political tragedy. “I came up with the theme last year on the day of our Blue Ridge Mountain Music Fest, which was also the day of the riots in Charlottesville. I could not be at either, but I kept hearing the radio stories about what was happening, and getting text updates about how great the bands were, and I thought, ‘Gosh it’s such a dichotomy.’ “It was very clear to me that what Wintergreen does and what the music does is to bring people together and remind them how much they have in common. Music more than any other thing has that ability, because if you think about everything that goes into one concert you realize how many different people with different backgrounds are involved”—from patrons to pianists, from ushers to conductors. “All of those people who come together from very different backgrounds are in the same room together with the shared goal of uplifting the human spirit. It’s not a political statement at all; it’s a musical statement.”
Leonard and Ludwig Amidst music appreciation seminars, masterclasses, and concerts, nothing will exemplify the power of music more than the performances on Saturday and Sunday, August 4 and 5 of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 125, that paean to freedom and universal brotherhood crowned by the stirring choral finale
the “Ode to Joy.” The symphony will be preceded by several traditional African-American spirituals and Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy, Op. 80. Atlanta Symphony Chorus and Orchestra pianist and Wintergreen regular Peter Marshall knows the Ninth well, and was fortunate to hear the historic 1989 performance led by Leonard Bernstein in Berlin celebrating the demolition of the Berlin Wall. Marshall will share his insight and his personal experience during a Music 101 session on the morning of Saturday, August 4. “One thing that has always intrigued me is its combination of loftiness and vulgarity,” he says. “The general listener has the tendency to come to great composers with a feeling of awe that every note they wrote is somehow sacred and worthy of respect and has to be taken seriously, and that can take the fun out of things. I think the Ninth is best understood if you appreciate the fact that there are some elements of it that are meant to be vulgar, that are really quite crass.” As an example Marshall cites a moment in the third verse of the Ode to Joy “when the entire chorus sings ‘before God’ and there is a big climax on this loud chord, and then immediately following that is a funny little march that

It’s OK to feel that that is actually a funny moment, and I think sometimes people need to be encouraged to bring their total feelings to something and not just stand in awed silence at a great composer. It’s nice to see the full range of humanity that is in these people and to bring them down a little bit from the heights, as great as they are.” Beethoven’s groundbreakingly grand Symphony No. 3 in E-flat Major, Eroica, originally dedicated to Napoleon Bonaparte, will be heard on Saturday and Sunday, July 14 and 15, on a program with Aaron Copland’s Quiet City and Bernstein’s Facsimile. Marshall was indirectly responsible for Freeman’s programming of the Bernstein work when he posted on Facebook lamenting that the piece is rarely performed. “I’ve never had an opportunity to play it, so I was overjoyed,” Marshall says. “It’s a side of Bernstein that we don’t hear because the music that gets played constantly is the theatre music and the symphonic works. Nobody’s doing Facsimile. Despite the piece’s jazzy elements, it is serious and kind
of sad. It begins and ends in a sort of emptiness and melancholy.” That troubled mood makes Facsimile quite a contrast to the Eroica, but offers a link to the reflective Quiet City, as does Copland’s close friendship with and mentorship of Bernstein. Both works were the basis of ballets by Jerome Robbins, himself a good friend and colleague of the composers. 2018 is Bernstein’s centenary, and his career illustrates this year’s focus on links and intersections. “He was a humanitarian who wrote music with the idea of bringing people together,” Freeman says, “and also within Facsimile that piece brought the genres of jazz and classical together. So we celebrate Beethoven and Bernstein, two musical game changers, and I‘ve chosen a lot of other works that create those connections, that build bridges between various entities.”
Bridges As an example Freeman cites the orchestral program on Saturday and Sunday, July 21 and 22, highlighted by Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring, with its “connection between American folk music and classical music.” Commissioned by choreographer Martha Graham in 1942 to write music on an American theme, the piece famously

Rachel Barton Pine has recorded it with the conductor (Daniel Hege), so it will be great for our audience to hear this rarely performed concerto performed by two people who probably know it better than most people around today.” Preceding the concertos is a short 1946 work by George Walker, the first African-American composer to earn a Pulitzer Prize, entitled Lyric for String. The Festival’s Wild Wednesdays shows will feature everything from jazz to Motown to hardcore, attitudinal rock. “On July 25, Rachel Barton Pine, the Royal Academy of Music’s Czigany Quartet and special guests will let it all hang out for what is perhaps this year’s most adventurous program, Shredding with the Strings—Rock & Roll Throughout the Ages, bridging classical music (Paganini, Vivaldi, and Shostakovich) and heavy metal (Led Zeppelin and Metallica). “It will be out of this world,” Freeman says. “I think it will show everyone that Vivaldi could head bang with the best of them.” Earplugs are optional. Adventurous, amusing, and just plain awesome sometimes—that’s the Wintergreen Performing Arts Festival as supporters and enthusiasts have come to know it over its 21-year history. “The fact that the musicians come and stay with people who live at Wintergreen has really become the core of our identity,” Freeman says. “It means that our patrons and musicians really get to know each other; our musicians understand what moves the patrons, and the patrons understand everything that goes into making something like Beethoven’s 9th work. ven when you’re moving to a wonderful new abode, the mechanics of getting your belongings from the old place to the new can be confusing, even overwhelming. Fortunately, practicalities have improved since our ancestors trundled belongings from one cave to the next. Unless it’s a do-it-yourself move, the place to start is with moving companies. Their websites have lots of good information, detailed pointers, and brochures. Remember, however, you’ll be dealing with a local agent, so you want to be happy with that representative. Get at least three estimates. Things to ask: Can you provide me with used moving cartons for free? Will you accept my credit card (which can yield substantial points or cash rewards) at no additional cost? Can you promise me a “door-to-door” so our goods will not be offloaded and reloaded on the way? Transfers along the way can lead to damaged or lost items, such as only three of four matching chairs appearing at the destination. Door-to-door also means every last dresser drawer doesn’t have to be emptied into shipping boxes—to guard against theft— then have to be reloaded into the correct drawer at the other end. Once you’ve settled on a mover, here are some prepping tasks you can take on to reduce your expenses.
Be Ruthless Even people who think they are ruthless in sorting and discarding things often move too much. Especially if you are moving a long distance, check to see just how much you’re paying per pound. If you’re forking over, say, 50 cents a pound, do you really want to ship the bricks for your brick-andboard bookcase, the kids’ outgrown toys or those last two cans of soup?

Stockpile Packing Materials Put out the word you are collecting bubble wrap and similar lightweight packing materials. If you have friends who often order from eBay or other online websites, ask them to save those little plastic pillows and padded envelopes. Newspapers don’t seem heavy a few sheets at a time, but the ounces turn into pounds quickly and newsprint can stain items. Although it may mean an extra washer load or two, it’s more economical to use scavenged bubble wrap, pillows, bedding, towels and soft apparel such as sweatshirts or socks as packing material rather than simply filling a box with them. Online sources such as Craigslist often offer free moving boxes. Grocery

stores are another good source of shipping cartons although produce boxes may not be a good choice because they are often treated with insecticide or even have bugs. Wine cartons with their internal dividers are perfect for packing dishes and other breakables. (Wrap each dish and glass individually and pack dishes on edge rather than flat.) Pointer: Books get a special shipping rate from the U.S. Postal Service and if you have a long move, this can be a good way to save money. Those wine cartons make excellent uniform-sized containers and hold just about the right number of books to heft and ship easily. If you are moving yourself locally, you don’t have to pack as carefully but you still need to protect your belongings. Consider transporting open drawers on your vehicle’s seats to reduce the weight of desks and dressers. Use blankets and mattress covers to protect furniture in that borrowed or rented truck.
When packing, it’s essential to label your boxes. Be specific. Instead of just “clothes” write “winter jackets, scarves and mittens” or “Claire’s sportswear and shoes.” Be sure to clearly mark FRAGILE on containers with breakables since this will help the movers know where to load them on the truck. Having the mover pack items can be a considerable expense, but they won’t take responsibility for damage in PBOs—boxes Packed By Owner. Many people opt to have fragile and valuable items packed by the professionals. For example, movers have special mirror boxes for artwork and for particularly fragile belongings, they might even build wooden crates.
Changing Your Address For at least two months, keep track of things you receive in the mail and prepare to notify senders of the new address. Visit your post office to fill out a form and request a Mover’s Guide
packet. There is no charge for this and first class mail is forwarded free. You can now change your address online as well. The Postal Service requires a $1 payment on your credit card as a security precaution for online changes.
Moving Day Have pets crated or off the premises. There are completely true stories of animals—especially cats—getting packed and having to survive for days. Be sure you have the company’s phone number, your local agent’s number, and the driver’s cell number and that they all have yours. In fact, it’s a good idea to provide several numbers to be contacted in case your phone isn’t charged when they call. You should have a timetable for the van’s arrival, but things happen—from blizzards to floods to truck trouble. Finally, remember to have the crew on your side. It’s friendly to offer morning coffee, constant cold drinks, and a plate of donuts or cookies. Be sure workers know they are welcome to use the bathrooms. While tips are not required, they never hurt. Mention to the boss—whether the local crew chief or the incoming van driver—that you’ll be giving a “bonus” and maybe a cold six-pack at the end of the day to divide among the workers. n Marilyn Pribus and her husband moved to Charlottesville more than ten years ago and have no plans to move again.
