NEWS & VIEWS What’s Happening Around Town? THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME Opens Friday, February 1, 2019 at Live Arts The Story Christopher John Francis Boone is a 15-year-old mathematician. He’s brilliant, literal, absolute, and difficult. He fears being touched; he dreams of being an astronaut. At 12:07 a.m., Christopher discovers a slain dog named Wellington in his neighbors’ yard. He determines to uncover the truth. His quest is fraught with obstacles—both physical and emotional. Yet he persists in decoding this enigma with arithmetical precision; and in doing so, he uncovers more hidden truths. “This adaptation by the acclaimed playwright Simon Stephens is intense, innately theatrical; it is also funny and extremely moving.” – New York Times Bryan Close is directing his first Live Arts show after returning to Charlottesville from a career in theater in NYC, and Teaching at NYU Tisch School of the Arts and The New School. Charlottesville High School student Ben Brantley is playing the lead character, Christopher. As a Live Arts “apprentice show” the design team is powered by a dozen teenage apprentice designers.

Sunday, February 17 is a Sensory-Friendly performance (see below). Why Here? Why Now? Director Bryan Close says, “This play is astonishing in all sorts of ways. It starts with the lead character, 15-year-old Christopher Boone, who is as compelling as any character in any contemporary play that I can think of. I really can’t remember rooting for anybody as hard as you find yourself rooting for Christopher. “The play is adapted from Mark Hadden’s brilliant novel, and you can see that in the power and originality of Christopher’s voice. His perspective is astonishing. It’s hard not to sound hyperbolic talking about how engaging and absorbing he is. “I start talking about Huckleberry Finn or Holden Caulfield... And Christopher’s journey is just as epic and inspiring as theirs are. It’s clever, and it’s inspiring, and it’s very, very entertaining. In Ben Brantley, the remarkable young man playing Christopher, we found the perfect actor to bring this story to life. He is working with a cast full of very fine, experienced actors—every one of whom is spectacular in this, by the way—and he more than holds his own. “And then there’s the storytelling, which [is] unlike anything I’ve ever worked on. It jumps around in time and place and multiple storytelling conventions and techniques for 60 scenes (60!!!) that flow seamlessly. The genius of Simon Stephen’s adaptation is that he’s able to do this without it ever getting confusing... or precious or didactic or anything other than completely entertaining!” And Producer Sarah Cain adds, “Live Arts’ production of THE CURIOUS INCIDENT... is the perfect example of how you can build community through theater and story-telling. The audience is taken on a journey through Christopher’s eyes, whose way of seeing and interacting with the world may be quite different than our own. We have the opportunity to explore and learn as an audience along with Christopher. Theater gives us a vehicle for understanding and empathy. “This production is also Live Arts’ annual mentor-apprentice show. Ten bright and excited teenagers are being

mentored by our design team to learn all about how to put on theater, including building sets, designing costumes, and hanging lights. They are part of the process from the very beginning and are an integral part of building the world of the play. It’s exciting to see the sense of community that is being fostered behind the scenes, as well as on the stage.” Sensory-Friendly Live Arts strives to make its performances and facilities accessible to all our patrons. For additional information or if you have questions, need assistance, or a special accommodation please contact the Producing Artistic Director, Bree Luck at bree@livearts.org. Sunday, Feb 17 will be a modified sensory-friendly performance. Sensory-friendly performances are designed to create a performing arts experience that is welcoming to all guests with sensory sensitivities. Accommodations for this performance of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time include: • Lower sound level, especially for startling or loud sounds; • Lights remain on at a low level in the theater during the performance; • A reduction of strobe lighting or lighting focused on the audience; • Patrons are free to talk and leave their seats during the performance; • Designated quiet areas in the theater lobby. • Space throughout the theater for standing and movement; • Live Arts staff, cast, and crew will be trained to be inviting and accommodating to guests’ needs. Performances begin Friday, February 1 at 8 p.m. and go through Sunday, February 17 at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are $26 for adults and $22 for students and seniors and may be purchased online at www.livearts.org or by calling the Live Arts Box Office at 434-977-4177 x 123. PAY-WHAT-YOU-CAN-WEDNESDAYS: On Wednesdays, Pay-WhatYou-Can, at the Box Office, Noon to 4 p.m. and 7 to 8 p.m., in person, available while tickets remain. About Live Arts: Live Arts, a non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization, is located at 123 East Water Street in Downtown Charlottesville. Founded in 1990, Live Arts has been forging volunteer-driven community theater for over 28 years. Live Arts is supported in part by a grant from the Virginia Commission for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts, and by the financial support of hundreds of theater lovers in our community.

Second Wind: Why Seniors Love Central Virginia

CAAR REAL ESTATE WEEKLY WWW.CAAR.COM

FEATURE

BY KEN WILSON

T

he community hub on Hillsdale Drive in Charlottesville that was once The Senior Center is now just called The Center, and why not? Local seniors, like the nearly 2,000 Center members and 6,000 yearly visitors who gather daily for mind and body exercise, classes, trips, coffee and fellowship, aren’t out on any periphery somewhere. They’re right where the action is: retired but not retiring, not employed but fully engaged, absorbed in learning, contributing to their community and enjoying life. And there are a lot of them. The number of people over 65 in Charlottesville and Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, and Nelson counties will reach 57,013 in 2030, according to the Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service at the University of Virginia, up from 24,488 in the year 2000. “By 2024, our area will have one in four people over the age of 65,” said Marta Keane, CEO of the Jefferson Area Board for Aging and an organiz-

er behind the Charlottesville Area Alliance, an Albemarle County collective which aims to boost awareness of senior issues, and advance age-friendly initiatives. “We know that the demographic is growing, and we know that people are choosing to age in the community and in the surrounding counties. They’re not moving away, and we know we’re a destination for retirees.” Of course we are. Central Virginia is blessed with beautiful countryside and moderate winters, plus a worldclass university and all the educational, medical, social, cultural (and culinary!) benefits that come with it. Highbrows and concerned citizens appreciate the intellectual and cultural resources and civic energy of “Mr. Jefferson’s University,” and aging bodies are grateful for our fine hospitals and specialty clinics. Sportsmen love its rivers, trails, and golf courses. History buffs treasure Monticello, Montpelier and Highlands. Everyone loves the restaurants, shops and theaters along Charlottesville’s red brick Downtown Mall. In a

state the AARP ranks among the top ten healthiest to retire in, Central Virginia stands out for urban amenities, back country beauty, and a populace keenly appreciative and supportive of, not to mention reliant on, its seasoned, “senior citizens.” The many hours of volunteer service given by dedicated local seniors “are changing the way people think about older adults,” says Kimberly Haynes, Coordinator of Volunteer Resources at The Center. “By using their talents and skills in myriad ways out in the community, seniors show they are active, involved, and essential. “It is a two-way relationship, providing an opportunity for organizations to achieve their goals and for volunteers to make meaningful use of their time, talent, and skills. And along with making our community a better place for people of all ages, seniors who volunteer are helping themselves. “Research shows that volunteering provides individual health benefits and, interestingly, the physical and mental benefits are greater for people 65 and older, particularly those who

volunteer for at least an hour or two a week.” “We are incredibly lucky in Charlottesville to have a very active cadre of senior volunteers,” says Virginia Gardner with Roy Wheeler Realty Co., who has worked with clients relocating to Charlottesville since the advent of real estate on the internet in the early 1990s. “The Jefferson Area Board for Aging coordinates programs for seniors to mentor school kids, volunteer for meals on wheels, counsel for peers, and more. Then there are non-profits like the Paramount Theater, the Festival of the Book and Film Festival, TEDx Charlottesville, Loaves & Fishes, and so many other valuable area programs. The volunteer contributions from our senior community are truly invaluable.”

Dedicated to Healthy Aging The Center’s mission is to positively impact the community by creating opportunities for healthy aging through social engagement, physical well-being, civic involvement, creativity, and lifelong learning. “We want people to live to be 100 but also have quality of life,”

says Program Director Jennifer Crews. “That’s what we strive to help them do.” To that end, the Center offers 100 programs and support groups a week, many free and open to the public, running the gamut from music and arts and crafts to local and overseas travel, fitness, financial planning and computer training. Physical exercise classes include Tai Chi, Hiking, Primetime Fitness, Chair Yoga, Seated Massage, Ageless Grace, Water Workout, and Pickleball—and that’s just on Mondays! Ping Pong, Bowling, folk and tap dancing are among the activities offered during the rest of the week. Members teach classes, provide administrative support, plan trips and serve as travel escorts, knit and sew for community projects at MACAA, and help at local hospitals with fundraising efforts like yard sales. They volunteered nearly 56,000 hours at the Center alone last year, and 10,000 more elsewhere. As Haynes puts it, “The Center wouldn’t exist without them.” With the senior population on the rise the Center is planning for the future with a $23 million campaign to finance a new, 47,000 square foot facility on Belvedere Boulevard just off of Rio Road. “Cost for the total project, including land, design, con-

struction, furniture and equipment, etc. is $24M,” Executive Director Peter Thompson says. “With some long term financing and proceeds from selling our current Center, the remaining capital campaign goal is $18 million and we’ve raised over $14.5 million.” In a sign of community support for the new venture, a $500,000 matching challenge grant offered by an anonymous donor in August was met in November, the same month ground was broken for construction. When it opens in the spring of 2020, the new Center will have fitness rooms, a 400-seat performing arts auditorium, a life-long learning wing, an art room, a game room, a volunteer center, and a library. And there is more to come: “The need is already here for the gym, walking track, and related program space,” Thompson says, “so we intend to build phase two as soon as we can.” The University of Virginia Health System will run a wellness program at the Center, and Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital will lease 3,000 square feet for a primary care clinic open to the public but focused on seniors. A Greenberry’s Café, open to all, will serve coffee, food, and beverages including beer and wine.

“Aging is the biggest demographic issue our community faces,” Thompson says. “Research consistently proves that the programs we will provide at The Center at Belvedere—e.g. social engagement, lifelong learning, physical wellness, and civic engagement—are the keys to aging well. With over twice as much program space under roof plus outdoor recreation and event space, plus 50 percent more operating hours, we expect to greatly enhance our impact on healthy aging for a far greater number of people in our community. “Additionally, the face of aging is changing dramatically as well. Working with older adults means we are meeting the holistic wellness needs of people from at least three different generations. “Serving people age 50+ means we are serving Boomers, the Silent Generation, and the GI Generation. For that matter we are starting to serve the next youngest generation as well! People’s expectations of how we meet our mission are changing and we will meet these needs and expectations with The Center at Belvedere. “We look forward to engaging more people to close the capital campaign as well as plan for the success of The Center.”

sites, houses of worship, and six miles of walking trails. “University Village is a condo project just west of the city which has also been tailored for the senior market, but only for independent living. Other condo and single family communities exist that I would certainly show my senior clients, such as Ednam and Ednam Village, Kenridge, Out of Bounds, Branchlands, Greenecroft, Stonegate, Dunlora Forest, Villas at Foothill Crossing and Old Trail, and, in my opinion, a sleeper value for this region, Spring Creek, located right off I-64 at Zions Crossroads.” A 950+ acre gated community, Spring Creek is blessed with a beautiful setting and spectacular views just 15 minutes from Charlottesville. Residents enjoy amenities including a sports club and fitness center, a 25-meter saltwater pool, sports courts, a nationally-recognized golf course with pro shop, tennis, basketball and pickleball courts, a children’s playground, miles of walking trails, banquet rooms and a tavern. Lots are priced from the $80 thousands. Homes begin in the low $300 thousands. Another popular spot with seniors is the Villages at Nahor near Lake Monticello in Fluvanna. Village homes

feature a “main level living floor plan,” with ease-of-use features popular with seniors including a no-step entry from the exterior of the home, rocker-style light switches, large doorways, and raised electrical outlets. Magnolia model floor plans range from 1,600 to 1,800 square feet. Savannah model floor plans range from 2,400 to 2,600 square feet, with optional upstairs space for additional bedrooms. Homeowners at Four Seasons at Charlottesville, actually located in Ruckersville, enjoy wonderful views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The development’s 120 detached homes (up to 650 more are planned) feature first floor master suites and two-car garages. The Clubhouse has an indoor pool and fitness center, plus cyber café, card tables, billiards room, library, sports TV area and ballroom. Outdoor amenities include bocce and tennis courts, croquet lawns, a putting green, and walking trails. Community, recreation, exploration, and service mark the lives of Central Virginia’s “active seniors,” and as it turns out, “Old and in the Way” is just an old bluegrass number. The reality around here, when the time arrives, is altogether better. n

SUDDENLY THE CHILDREN ARE GONE and there you are with several extra rooms to heat, cool, and keep dusted. What’s next? Kate Galloway and her husband are pretty typical of people facing this dilemma. He’s already retired and Kate, a Charlottesville paralegal, plans to retire in the next two or three years. “We built our house many years ago and we love it,” Kate declares about their home off Route 20 north of Pantops. “But now we want just one floor. We’re tired of our long steep driveway, especially in winter. And we’ve just got too much stuff.” Folks like the Galloways often make changes in terms of fewer square feet, but with increased convenience and luxury. Some people prefer to stay in the family home, often updating and remodeling. Others decide to move to a smaller place, sometimes in an age-restricted development. Charlottesville often appears on “The Best of…” lists as a desirable place to retire, attracting out-of-towners. Local residents may opt to remain, but change their living arrangements. Whatever their plans, downsizers have a wide variety of choices: moving, staying, going single-story, remodeling, relocating closer to town or living in an age-restricted community.

Staying Put Folks who like their current home often stay right where they are. Frequently they live in a family community and enjoy their neighbors. They may employ a lawn service to tend their yard and already know a neighbor who will feed their pets if they are away. Sometimes they move to a smaller dwelling in the same development. Others “downsize” by converting one or more bedrooms into an office, hobby room, or fitness center. They might update the kitchen, add a garage or screened porch. A highly popular remodeling option is to create a firstfloor master bedroom suite, perhaps with a spa-style bathroom. On the other hand, the proceeds from selling a larger home often allow people to purchase an upscale house with less square footage or a downtown condo where they can walk to the library, shops, theaters, and restaurants.

Age-Restricted Neighborhoods Many folks opt for an “active adult” community. Usually one partner must be at least 55 and these developments typically offer social activities, yard care, and a clubhouse with a fitness center, swimming pool, and meeting area. There are a number of such developments in our region.

Since the Charlottesville area is popular with retirees, builders are responding with EasyLiving Homes in new developments. This voluntary certification program encourages construction with features such as wider hallways, lever door handles instead of knobs, no-step entries, grab-bars, and roll-in showers. These features appeal to people approaching retirement (as well as persons with disabilities) and are easily incorporated into new homes with an eye to buyers planning to “age in place.” Such features can also be part of a renovation without adding a great deal to the cost. Even when these developments aren’t marketed as 55+, single-story EasyLiving homes with fewer square feet attract that demographic. However, since one-level homes require more land and land is expensive, in-town properties tend to cost more than those in outlying areas. A Continuing Care Residential Community (CCRC) is yet another option. CCRCs feature independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing care and often memory care in the same location. This continuum generally guarantees lifetime housing and increased levels of care as residents’ needs change. This can be a particularly good option when one partner has serious health issues. Often a substantial buy-in is

101 BY MARILYN PRIBUS

required, but lease options are sometimes available as well.

Other Options Those who prefer to rent will find apartment complexes with month-tomonth rentals. Some also offer assisted living and memory care. Amenities may include housekeeping, dining options, and local transportation to shopping or medical appointments. A wise option may be to sublet a house, apartment, or condo in an area you are thinking of moving to. This way you can see if you really like downsized living.

What Do We Do With Our Stuff? Downsizing usually requires “rehoming” belongings from indoor and outdoor furniture to books. Folks are often disappointed that their children don’t want grandma’s mahogany dining room set or sterling silver serving pieces, but they can sometimes be sold and can always be donated.

Once you have decided to downsize, begin finding potential homes for now-excess items. After offering things to family members, some folks sell small items on eBay where there is a world-wide population of potential customers. Local consignment shops will often accept more valuable pieces. Craigslist can be a good place to sell things locally. And when you list under the FREE category you can find new owners for just about anything from rusty tomato cages to old flower pots to a very-well-used dog house—even things like mattresses that most local non-profits won’t take. And don’t forget local charities, which will accept many items as donations such as furniture, dishes, or the deep fryer you haven’t used in 17 years. They will also provide itemized statements for your tax records.

Don’t Make Rush Decisions The Galloways are taking their time in settling their plans. They are looking at existing properties as well as checking out vacant lots with an eye to possibly acting as the general contractor while building exactly the place they want. “We’re willing to adapt,” says Kate. With an eye to the future, Marilyn Pribus and her husband downsized to a 1,400-square-foot, single-level home when they moved to Albemarle County from California a dozen years ago.
