THE WOLVES Opens at Live Arts Friday, March 8, 2019 The Story Audiences will revel in the journey of nine young women amped up on adrenaline, adolescent anxiety, and orange slices as they chase down victory on the soccer field and test the boundaries of their expanding identities. This show features our talented young adult performers between the ages of 14 and 20. “It’s a joy to be telling this story with such a talented and wildly intelligent cast of young women,” says Kelli Shermeyer, director of THE WOLVES, “I’ve never been in such an energized (and energizing!) rehearsal room—there’s nothing better than stepping into a space already full of buoyant laughter.” The Founders Theater at Live Arts is being transformed. The play takes place on the edge of an indoor soccer field, where the team preps/warms up for their next game. Shermeyere says, “we’re all thrilled to be working with an all-star team of designers and collaborators and can’t wait for Live Arts audiences to meet the Wolves!” Producer Adrienne Oliver adds, “It’s rare to see a play starring, supported by, and centered around young people, and we have the deeper significance of those young people being female. It’s a marvelous thing to sit and truly listen to girls navigate their relationships and ideas, with authentic wonder, joy, confusion, and candor.”
Performances begin Friday, March 8 at 8:00 p.m. and go through Saturday, March 30 at 8:00 p.m. Tickets: $26 for adults and $22 for students and seniors and may be purchased online at www.livearts.org or by calling the Live Arts Box Office at 434977-4177 x 123. On Wednesdays, pay what you can at the Box Office in person, Noon to 4 p.m. and 7 to 8 p.m. Available while tickets remain. About Live Arts: Live Arts is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization located at 123 East Water Street in downtown Charlottesville. Founded in 1990, Live Arts has been forging volunteer-driven community theater for over 28 years. Live Arts is supported in part by a grant from the Virginia Commission for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts, and by the financial support of hundreds of theater lovers in our community.
St. Anne’s-Belfield School’s Glaser ‘19 Launches Charlottesville Nonprofit Instagram When St. Anne’s-Belfield School senior Madi Glaser began a three-week internship with The Haven, a multi-resource day center in downtown Charlottesville, she had no idea that it would lead to the creation of her own community resource. “There are endless organizations, opportunities, and people involved in community service in Charlottesville. I didn’t realize until this internship how easy it was to connect with them,” Glaser said. “There are just so many, and there’s not one place you can go to find all of them. That’s the reason I did my Instagram, Aware & Act. With more awareness the Charlottesville community can come closer together and work as a team.” Launched in December, Aware & Act (@awareandact) is Glaser’s Instagram
account dedicated to highlighting service opportunities throughout the area. “My Instagram is really my happy place right now,” she said. “I work about forty-five minutes per post, and I just try to post any upcoming events, volunteer opportunities, fundraisers, absolutely anything that will bring people together.” In the future, Glaser hopes that community organizations will begin reaching out to her with more information and that she can expand Aware & Act into multiple platforms including a website, YouTube channel, and Twitter account. When she sets off for college, she plans to continue working on the Charlottesville Aware & Act but also create one in her new hometown. “I hope that eventually we can have these Instagrams in all communities, and then a global one that can spread more and more information,” she said. “I see a lot of hope in that, I hope it grows.” St. Anne’s-Belfield School is a co-educational preschool through grade twelve day school of nearly 900 students and more than 150 faculty and staff, with a boarding program in grades nine through twelve. Fifteen countries are represented in the student body, with 40 percent of students receiving financial aid. More information may be found at www.stab.org.
Wild Virginia Wild and Scenic Film Festival The Wild and Scenic Film Festival brings together a selection of films that tell stories about our planet, our beautiful and precious wild lands, and the people of the communities who love them, play in them and defend them. They open our eyes and hearts to fantastic experiences in remarkable places. These films introduce attendees to wild and special places and to the courageous individuals who are working to protect and preserve them. The film festival not only highlights environmental concerns, but also provides solutions, reaching people through beautiful imagery. Our festival is an inspiring evening of empowering films. Different films will be shown each night in Charlottesville. The films will be announced in late February/ early March.

ugusta”—the feminine of “Augustus”—from which we get “august,” with its connotations of imposing, majestic, stately and noble, fitting terms for the view from many a corner of Virginia’s own Augusta County. The second largest county in the commonwealth, nestled between the Blue Ridge Mountains on the east and the Allegheny Mountains on the west, Augusta encompasses parts of Skyline Drive, the Blue Ridge Parkway, Shenandoah National Park, the George Washington National Forest, and the seven limestone towers known as Natural Chimneys. Majestic is right. Scattered amidst all that lovely countryside and its many small towns and unincorporated communities are the independent cities of Staunton and Waynesboro, and two charming villages, Mt. Sidney and Middlebrook, listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Named after an 18th century princess of Wales, mother to Britain’s King George III, Augusta was so sparsely populated at its founding in 1738 that for seven years no one bothered to set up a government. Though a drive through the county reveals wide open spaces, its population increased more than 34 percent from 1990 to 2010. Architecture buffs are attracted to picturesque Staunton, with its handsome homes and buildings in styles including Federal, Greek Revival, Italianate, Folk Victorian, Queen Anne and Colonial Revival. The city is also home to Mary Baldwin University, the internationally acclaimed American Shakespeare Center, the Frontier Culture Museum, and a lively restaurant scene. The Heifetz International Music Institute trains pre-professional students for careers in classical music, and holds concerts each summer. The Staunton Music Festival holds its own 10-day summer concert series with both free and ticketed classical music programs played by dozens of professionals both local and international.

Blue Ridge Community College in Weyer’s Cave, founded in 1967, offers programs of instruction including associate degrees, diplomas, and certificates in occupational/technical and college/university transfer programs. In addition to Mary Baldwin College, Augusta is home to Stuart Hall School

It boards students from around the world in grades 8 through 12. Fishburne Military School in Waynesboro, “the oldest and smallest military school for boys in Virginia,” prides itself on offering “individualized attention in a college preparatory environment.” The Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind in Staunton has been educating deaf and blind children since it was established by the Virginia General Assembly in 1839. The school serves children between the ages of 2 and 22.
Economy History, tradition, culture, and unspoiled beauty—that’s Augusta County. “Augusta County is a great place to live,” says Countryside HomeCrafters president Frank Root, who ought to know, having spent the better part of his 65 years there. “It’s still fairly rural, with clean water and a great agricultural and manufacturing economy. It has a really good quality of life with excellent schools.” Dubbed the “Breadbasket of the Confederacy” during the Civil War, Augusta County today is economically diverse, with strong agricultural, medical, and manufacturing sectors.

With 1,729 farms on 286,195 acres, Augusta County has more farm acreage than any other Virginia county. It is the second largest agriculture producing county in the Commonwealth, but it ranks first in the state for production of beef cattle, sheep and lambs, and second in milk cow production. It is home to more than 30,000 head of beef cattle and 9,000 sheep and lambs, and is also one of the state’s largest poultry producers. Award-winning Augusta Health hospital, a 224-bed general medical and surgical facility conveniently located at the crossroads of interstate high-
ways I-64 and I-81, includes a stroke and cancer center and is the county’s largest employer with 2,300 employees. In addition to Augusta Health, Fishersville’s growing life sciences corridor includes Mary Baldwin University’s Murphy Deming College of Health Sciences, which is just three miles from the hospital, and the Wilson Workforce Rehabilitation Center. Roughly 20 percent of Augusta County’s workforce is employed in manufacturing. Small to medium sized manufacturing plants include Hollister Plastics, Hershey Chocolate, Target Distribution Center, PlyGem and
McKee Foods (maker of Little Debbie) in Stuarts Draft, and American Safety Razor (formerly Westinghouse) and Daikin Applied in Verona. Among the industries new or coming to the area is Arizona-based Shamrock Farms in Verona, which after an expansion late last year now employs 120 people. “We have a very diverse economy,” says Marshall Pattie of the Augusta County Board of Supervisors. “We survive economic downturns better than most communities do.” “We have a very strong economy with a lot of things that are not really subject to some of the whipsaw things you get in a recession,” Root says, citing institutions like Western State Hospital, the Wilson Workforce and Rehabilitation Center, Blue Ridge Community College, Mary Baldwin, and Stuart Hall. “We have a lot of good jobs that are not severely impacted by recessions. Our lows are not near as low as the average and our highs—we don’t get overheated. So it’s an economy that’s growing but it’s never boom or bust, it’s always kind of steady. Augusta County has always had modest growth. We’re not one of those areas that’s growing so fast we can’t handle our growth, but we’ve also never been stagnant.”
Growth and Change Good jobs bring good people, which is one reason why the population is growing. “There is what I call the Z of growth,” Root says. “If you look at it on a map it’s almost like a reverse Z. It starts at Weyers Cave and comes to Staunton along I-81, turns and goes toward the mountains on I-64, but then takes another jag and goes towards Stuarts Draft along Route 340. Those are your main corridors. That’s where most of our growth is; there is also some along I-81 South. “Fishersville’s right in the heart of that, right on I-64 three miles from I-81, so it’s an exceptionally high growth area, both commercial and residential. There is a tremendous amount of commercial stuff going on just around the interstate at Waynesboro. A lot of people from Waynesboro commute to Charlottesville and Fishersville’s just one more exit.” Root’s own Countryside HomeCrafters has several developments in the making, including Windward Pointe in Fishersville, where homes prices range from the mid-$300 thousands to the low $400 thousands. The Overlook community in Stuarts Draft features wildlife ponds, sidewalks and mountain views and is a good place to look for entry-level homes.

Brand new condos are available nearby in Gables East, which consists of two four-story, 16-unit buildings, with off-street parking, sidewalks, common areas, and excellent views. Gables East condos are the first in Augusta County with elevators. Townhomes with three and four bedrooms, and two-and-a-half to three-and-a-half baths and a garage, are available in the Evershire development in Waynesboro. Townhouse owners in the Towns on Imperial community in Staunton enjoy one level living with attached garages, along with lawn care and snow removal. “It’s a great time to buy a home,” Root says. “Interest rates have inched up a little and are probably going to go higher, so the sooner you buy, the better off you are. Our prices have not jumped as fast as those in Richmond and Northern Virginia, so they are still a good deal for your money.”

Getting Around Another feature of Augusta life is ease of transportation. In 1854 the Virginia Central Railroad connected Staunton with Richmond, the state capital, making Staunton an agricultural supply center during the Civil War.
Today “you can go three different directions and go on three interstate interchanges and end up in three different university cities,” Root says, “Lexington to the south with Washington and Lee and VMI, Harri-
sonburg to the north with JMU, and Charlottesville with UVA. “So we have a really great location with two interstate highways intersecting, and very good rail service (Amtrak).”
Indeed. I-81 slices through the County running north to south, while I-64 comes in from the east, crosses I-81 at Staunton and heads south. For rail fans, Amtrak’s Cardinal line stops in Staunton on its runs from New York

A Great Place to Live “Augusta County offers an affordable cost of living complemented by a great quality of life,” says Augusta County Director of Economic Development Amanda Glover, a Shenandoah Valley native who moved there in 2012 with her husband John. “We appreciate the rural nature of the County, while at the same time being centrally-located with easy access to recreation, commercial development, and cultural aspects, such as great farm-to-table restaurants. For us, it’s the best of both worlds: we have a few acres and gorgeous mountain views but live only ten minutes from a grocery store.” The Glovers are hardly alone in their opinion. Fishersville was ranked Best
Place to Buy First-Time Home in Virginia by Nerdwallet.com in 2015. The financial news and opinion site, 24/7 Wall Street, recently ranked Waynesboro 46 out of 50 in a list of the best cities to settle in the United States, citing its “affordability, safety, and scenic beauty” and “easy access to the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway and the Appalachian Trail.” Goods and services in Waynesboro, it noted, “are about 7 percent less expensive than they are nationwide on average. Additionally, the violent crime rate of 182 incidents per 100,000 people is less than half the U.S. violent crime rate of 383 per 100,000.” “The county makes anybody feel welcome,” Root says. “We are very diverse but with a strong agricultural base. It’s a great place to raise a family. We have a lot of strong community organizations—a dozen Rotary Clubs, and all types of volunteer organizations. We have hunting and fishing, hiking, camping, and shooting, theater groups and breweries. There is a lot going on in Augusta County.” n

The reason I deem myself this title will reaches back to my work ethic and childhood. Coming from a large family of contractors; my “job” growing up was to be the “helper” which gave me a “hands on” approach from building walls, demolishing old structures, designing layouts etc. This foundation is part of what drives me to be who I am today!
As a Real Estate Agent I have been mentored under the top producing agents and had the opportunity from my connection to the business world to be an exceptional RE/MAX Realtor from the start. I provide my clients the best of my time, devotion and attention. Every single person has an individual need and desire; and I enjoy being the voice they need to accomplish their goals with home ownership.

My approach is to provide the best service possible to those who have a dream and desire to be home owners; or to sell their properties. I pride myself with explaining in simple to understand terms; what the process looks like and to continue to serve them once they have achieved their goals. For me it is not a service that ends at the closing table; I am honored if it continues far beyond. My business is based on referrals and that is how I judge my success!
I look forward to working for you; and providing you the utmost success in your individual Real Estate needs!

➛ Founder, L.W. Graves In 1893, Better Living, Inc. founder, L.W. Graves, began operations of the company and it was simply called Charlottesville Lumber. Back then we had one goal and one product (lumber) which was delivered by horse and buggy. Today, the family business has grown to three locations, including a custom mill shop, and the largest delivery system in Central Virginia! Chances are, if you lived in Virginia long enough, you’ve seen one of our yellow and green delivery trucks.
➛ John S. Graves
➛ Richard Nunley During the second World War, the company produced portable barracks and large shipping crates to support the war effort. Meanwhile, its future President Richard L. Nunley was serving in the 13th Air Force in the Philippines. He would later serve again as a First Lieutenant in Korea. In 1957, Richard Nunley left his law career to join his father-in-law’s business. As the story goes…in 1958, Richard “Dick” Nunley demonstrated proudly an expensive and unauthorized purchase that he made to improve efficiency in the lumber yard. His father-inlaw (to whom he had given the bill) viewed the occasion with a serious face and extreme skepticism. The purchase was a FORKLIFT!

In its early days, Charlottesville Lumber was located on Avon Street. By the mid-twenties, John S. Graves joined his father to help with the company’s natural expansion into the construction business. As general contractors, Charlottesville Lumber has built many buildings, schools, churches, and homes in the area including the McGuffey School, City Library, U.S. Post Office, Barringer Wing of the original University Hospital, and Peabody Hall at the University of Virginia. Charlottesville Lumber also developed residential subdivisions including Camelot, Foxbrook, Greenlea, Orchard Acres, and Ruckersville Heights.

(before I was in the industry) when my parents first considered doing a reverse mortgage themselves. My Mom asked me to help her do some research and that’s what started me on my path of wanting to eventually be the expert on the subject. It’s amazing to me today that I still hear the same false rumors from people sometimes that I heard two decades ago. The mortgage company does not take title to your home and yes the heirs still inherit the home upon the borrower’s passing. Those are the two most misunderstood topics. And yes the money you receive is not income so it is not taxed as some people think. Also, Medicare and Social Security are not effected by the proceeds that you receive from a reverse mortgage. And yes it’s true that you are not required to ever make a payment for as long as you live in the home.

I am very patient when I speak to clients and take my time explaining everything face to face with absolutely no pressure to move forward because I remember how much my parents appreciated it when the person that they worked with showed them the same respect.

An adjustable rate mortgage is the perfect solution for home buyers seeking a lower initial monthly payment—and a lower initial interest rate. Talk to our Mortgage Experts today & BE PART OF SOMETHING.
Lender On Your Side
Your loan officer’s job is to be your guide helping you navigate available mortgage programs so you can choose the best one. They will also generate estimates of your monthly payment so you know whether it’s an amount you can be comfortable with in the long haul, says Jamie Yowell with Bank of the James Mortgage. At your first meeting, they will ask about your income, your debts, the value of your savings and investments and the amount of equity in your present home. They will also run a credit check. First time buyers, especially, may not realize that their monthly payment includes home owners’ insurance, property taxes and often mortgage insurance (also known as
PMI or Private Mortgage Insurance) in addition to principal and interest. Buyers need this complete information to determine if the payment fits their budget. There may also be some surprises on a buyer’s credit report, Yowell notes. He’s seen reports with an outstanding collection of as little as $26 that the buyer had no idea was there. Talking to the lender up front can help get issues such as these resolved.
REALTORS® Want to Know Another reason you need to make a lender your first stop is that most REALTORS® will not show you any homes unless they know you are qualified to follow through with a purchase. No one wants to spend time and money helping you find the perfect house, only to learn it’s out of your price range. And most sellers will not sign off on a purchase offer—effectively taking their home off the market— without the same assurance. Your agent also needs lender input to help you find a house you will be comfortable with. This requires a targeted search that takes into account what you can afford as well as your special needs. “Buyers need to be realistic about choosing the right size home,” says Candice Van Der Linde with RE/MAX Realty Specialists, “something that will suit their needs over the years.” Success requires the advice and counsel of your REALTOR®, Van Der Linde adds. When they have all of your financial information your loan officer will write a prequalification letter stating the amount of mortgage you qualify for. When you make an offer on a house, your agent will submit the letter along with your purchase offer to assure the seller you are a serious buyer. You may also want to talk to your lender about providing two letters, one for the

When you meet with your lender, you may be surprised to learn there is more to choosing a mortgage program than knowing the current interest rate. First time buyers—usually defined as anyone who hasn’t owned a home in the last three years—may be eligible for special reduced mortgage rates or down payment and closing cost assistance. With some of these options, buyers can purchase a home with little or nothing down. Buyers that meet income and location requirements may also qualify for a zero down USDA loan even if they are not first timers. This program allows sellers to pay your closing costs if that is agreed to in the purchase contract. Jay Domenic with Movement Mortgage has seen clients receive their earnest money and the fee they paid for the appraisal refunded to them at closing. However, if you haven’t had that all important upfront meeting with your lender, you and your agent may not have included that provision in your offer. Your lender can assist you with other special programs as well. Fulton Mortgage offers a loan that finances up to 97 percent of a home’s value with no mortgage insurance, says loan officer, Julia Morris. If a couple is buying a home and their joint income exceeds the upper limit of $89,600 they can qualify using just one person’s income and still have both parties on the title. Still other loan options provide funds for renovation of an older home prior to moving in. The home is appraised at what it will be worth after repairs are complete. “Everyone’s scenario is different,” Yowell explains. A good lender can help you sift through the options to pick the best program long term, and there are always tradeoffs. For example, if you can afford a 20 percent down payment, which allows you to avoid paying an extra $80 a month for mortgage insurance, is that a good investment? “The answer depends on your goals,” Yowell says. Only you can decide, but your lender can help you understand the options so you can choose wisely. If you are ready to buy a house, make an appointment with your local lender. He or she can help you sift through the many issues and options to arrive at the best loan program. Then they will work closely with you and your agent to get you to closing with a minimum amount of stress. n
