NEWS & VIEWS

Encouraging and accepting diversity in your neighborhood gives us all a richer life.

Recently, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Charlottesville hosted a home dedication honoring new homeowner Norma Blanco-Leiva and her children Stacy, Thiago and Yadir. The dedication celebrated the culmination of Norma’s hard work during her home buying journey. Norma, a native of El Salvador who has worked in the kitchen at Beer Run for 10 years, was driven by the desire to purchase her own home and provide her family with better living conditions. After completing homebuyer education classes, Norma put in more than 200 hours of sweat equity on five different Habitat construction sites as well as the Habitat Store—all while working full time and raising three children. Norma credits her daughter Stacy as her source of motivation throughout the Habitat program. “I wanted more for Stacy. She’s a straight A student. She’s amazing, and deserves her own space. It pushed me.” Habitat purchased the home in the Townwood subdivision as a rehabilitation project as part of its anti-gentrification efforts. Habitat works to stabilize communities by rehabbing and infusing neighborhoods with affordable homeownership. It partners with existing renters and/or other lowwealth residents in our area so that they can purchase homes and build equity for future generations. “Partnering with Norma as she works to buy a home for her family is part of a greater effort to preserve affordable housing in our area and strengthen our communities,” says Dan Rosensweig, President and CEO of Habitat. “We are engaging other non-profits and government leaders to help ensure that all our neighbors, like Norma and her family, have access to decent housing and the opportunity for homeownership.” About Habitat: Habitat for Humanity of Greater Charlottesville brings people together to build and rebuild homes and communities while cata-

lyzing new pathways to safe, decent affordable housing. Our work has evolved from building one house at a time to developing vibrant, sustainable, mixed-income communities, where hardworking local families can achieve their dreams of homeownership. Since our founding in 1991, we have built 200 new homes and safely housed 2,000 neighbors, thanks to the commitment and dedication of our thousands of volunteers and supporters.

f country living is what you like, with friendly neighbors and a relaxed pace of life but with fast access to faster places, there is a county you’ll love with the pretty name of Louisa. “Give me Louisa or give me death,” as Patrick Henry was trying to say when his tongue slipped, Henry having represented the County in Virginia’s House of Burgesses and remembering, no doubt, the County’s charm. The generally flawless orator was on to something. “Kinder” and “gentler” is 21st century resident Patrick Hanley’s description of his adopted county. Hanley is owner/operator of Panamint Farm, where he raises a couple of hundred black angus cattle. He came to Louisa in 2001 by way of New York City and Northern Virginia, and he stayed. People tend to do that. “I’ve been impressed that a lot of people move here and then come to the museum and say, ‘I’ve just bought this old house and I want to learn more about it and the County,’” says Karleen Kovalcik, Executive Director of the Louisa County Historical Society and Director of the Sargeant Museum of Louisa County. “Even the newcomers are interested in the history.”

History

It’s large, it’s lovely, and it’s “a kinder, gentler” place.

Louisa is “a community with a lot of people who have been here for many generations and really know their family roots in the County,” Kovalcik says. “Proud Louisans can take you to the hamlet of Cuckoo, just east of the town of Mineral, former site of the Cuckoo Tavern, where Virginia militiaman Jack Jouett – known to some as the Paul Revere of the South – overheard British troops plotting to capture Thomas Jefferson and other officials in June of 1781. Jouett’s discovery prompted his famous ride to Charlottesville – described by Pulitzer Prize winning Richmond Times-Dispatch editor Virginius Dabney as “much longer and more difficult than Revere’s” – to warn Jefferson at Monticello. Another heroic County character was Henry “Box” Brown. Born a slave in 1815, Brown escaped in 1849 by having himself mailed in a wooden crate to abolitionists in Philadelphia. Upon arrival the next day, he sang a Psalm from the Bible to celebrate his freedom. Soon he was invited to speak at the New England Anti-Slavery Society Convention in Boston; later he made his living as a magician in England and the eastern United States. Louisa farmland was the scene of the largest all-cavalry battle of the Civil

War. Much of that land, along with no less than 250 original 18th and 19th century homes, are preserved today as the 14,000-acre Green Springs National Historic Landmark District. As for Patrick Henry, who practiced law in the County, he was its representative in the House of Burgesses when he introduced the Virginia Stamp Act Resolutions in response to the Stamp Act passed by the British Parliament taxing American colonists in 1765. “Caesar had his Brutus, Charles I his Cromwell, and George III may profit by their example,” Henry proclaimed to the chamber, provoking cries of “Treason!” from one fellow legislator.

Pride The seat of the County, the little town of Louisa, is understandably proud of such a heritage. Let’s let its own citizens explain: “We are a community that preserves and builds on our history while retaining our social fabric and small town appeal,” the Louisa Town Council Vision Statement says. “Our Main Street defines us, providing a sense of place and identity and drawing citizens together.” Established in 1873, Louisa prides itself on being “a great place to do business,” with “a strong community, noteworthy amenities and a quickly growing marketplace.” Add that all up and you have “a Progressive, Vibrant & Caring Community in the heart of Virginia,” where townspeople, like residents throughout the County, enjoy low tax rates.

Points of interest in Louisa include the historic Louisa Courthouse, a popular gathering place of local residents during March Court Days, plus the Louisa Arts Center and the Sargeant Museum. “I don’t know of any other county that has that much diversity,” says Tracy Clark, Executive Director of the Louisa County Chamber of Commerce. “We have the rural and historical area, and then we have this booming suburbia to metropolitan Charlottesville.” Clark is referring to Zion Crossroads, an area “with a lot of new development and new businesses.” Situated around the intersection of I-64 and U.S. Route 15 and officially designated as the County’s growth area,

Zion Crossroads’s mix of residential, commercial and industrial properties includes a Wal-Mart, a 900,000-squarefoot Wal-Mart Distribution Center, and a Lowes, along with other shops, restaurants, dentist and doctors’ offices, a bank and a credit union. A new water treatment facility is in the works to supply an additional 1.5 million gallons per day of James River water to the area. Zion Crossroads is also home to the 950-acre, 1,200-home golf community of Spring Creek, a private, 24-hour gated community with a nationally-recognized golf course, sports club with fitness center, 25-meter saltwater pool, sports courts, and miles of walking trails. Lots are priced from the $80,000s.

Simpler living can be had in the little town of Mineral, known for its gold, zinc and lead mining heritage. In busier days there were more than 15 gold mines in the area. Zinc and lead were still mined here in the 1970s. Mineral’s Walton Park, named for former leading citizen Elizabeth Trice Walton (born in 1905), is a lovely place to picnic or hold an event. Walton is buried in stately Spring Grove Memorial Park Cemetery, a quiet place to stroll and reflect. Every July, Walton Park hosts dozens of the country’s hottest pickers at the Mineral Bluegrass Festival, a three-day, family-friendly party that welcomes campers. Otherwise, in warm weather the park is known for lively flocks of Carolina

very small community. It’s a good place to raise a family.” “I feel safe here,” says John Miyagawa, a grateful refugee from Northern Virginia congestion who commutes into Charlottesville from his home near Zion Crossroads. “The social services are first rate, and First Responder response time is very good.” “Inbound and outbound commute traffic is nominal,” Miyagawa says. “Getting into town is a hop, skip and a jump. I’m 13.5 miles and 20 minutes from Martha Jefferson Hospital; I’m 16.5 miles and 25 minutes from the Downtown Mall. The morning commute in has the sun at your back and the same is true for the return.”

Get to Know Louisa town of Louisa, with livestock, exhibits, games and entertainment.

Louisa Living “My husband and I retired here,” says County resident Cathy Pool, a volunteer with the Sargeant Museum of Louisa History. “He was an avid golfer and he wanted to live near a golf course, so we bought a home on the golf course of the Tanyard Country Club” (now The Greens at Tanyard). Billed as “one of the most affordable courses in the area,” it’s also a course, says Washington Golf Monthly, that’s “fun” and “makes you feel welcome.” Though the Pools just moved from nearby Spotsylvania County, many Northern Virginia retirees come as well, attracted by Lake Anna and what Pool calls “the laidback atmosphere,” the “very friendly, welcoming, and warm people,” and the pristine and pretty scenery. Smith has lived in Louisa for 16 years. What keeps her there? “The connections that you make with people,” she says. “We all know each other. It’s a

best bass fishing in the state. Other attractions include restaurants, lodging, vineyards, golf, shopping, and hiking, plus a growing economy. Lake Anna State Park comprises 3,127 acres with 10 miles of lake frontage. While a variety of cabins and lodges bring in the tourists, others like Hanley live on the lake year round. “It’s probably the premier community in the County,” he says. Water access in its numerous waterfront subdivisions “starts in the low $200 [thousands] all the way up to $2 million,” says Amy Smith, a REALTOR® with RE/MAX Realty Specialists. “Retirees love it there.” Jobseekers have plenty of opportunities in Louisa, because employers are looking. Dominion Energy at Lake Anna is Louisa’s largest employer. Its number one industry is timber and its second is agriculture, with numerous farms dedicated to livestock, crops and wine. The County’s rich farming tradition is celebrated annually during the Louisa County Agricultural Fair – Friday and Saturday, July 26 and 27 this year at Fireman’s Fairgrounds in the

chickadees and tufted titmice, sometimes supplemented by white-breasted nuthatches, black-throated green warblers, and yellow-throated vireos. During the winter red-bellied or downy woodpeckers, northern flickers, and yellow-bellied sapsuckers may be seen. In spring the park’s wildflowers attract red-spotted purple butterflies. More upscale county properties include large farms and homes in the popular 13,000-acre region of Lake Anna, built by Dominion Power back in the 70s to cool the turbines at North Anna Nuclear Power Station. Approximately 17 miles long, Lake Anna has over 250 miles of shore line (extending into Orange and Spotsylvania counties) and is one of the largest freshwater inland lakes in Virginia. Its power station serves 450,000 homes and provides 17 percent of Virginia’s electricity. “The community began with a bunch of summer homes,” Hanley says, and with its marinas, parks, and public fishing areas it still attracts vacationers for its boating, water sports, and what’s regarded as some of the

Two upcoming community-wide festivals will let Louisans celebrate their history, and give city slickers and other interested parties curious about Louisa living an opportunity to meet the good people of one of Virginia’s most close-knit counties. City and County will join together for the Sixth Annual Louisa County Heritage Day Celebration on the grounds of the Sargeant Museum on Saturday, April 27 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The 21st century will give way to the 1820s with living history demonstrations by what Pool, with an history buff’s apt turn of phrase, calls “tradesmen of yesteryear”: tobacconists, hearth cooks, blacksmiths, broom makers, woodworkers, gardeners, weavers and spinners, and more. Festival goers will see draft horses harnessed and a field plowed, watch black powder rifle firing and hear live music. Kids will learn to make corn-shuck dolls, spin wool, and do needlework, find out how a telegraph was sent, and play popular period games. Craft and food vendors will be on hand. This family event is free to the public and Heritage Day will be held rain or shine. Then on Saturday, June 8 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. folks will gather again for the 3rd Annual Louisa Street Festival, downtown at Courthouse Square. Sponsored by the Louisa County Chamber of Commerce, the festival will showcase the community’s many businesses and organizations and feature food, beverage, craft, and specialty item vendors, along with live entertainment, “plenty of kid fun,” and carriage rides throughout the day. Get to know Louisa – there is a lot to like. When a 5.8 earthquake hit Mineral in August of 2011 and shook the books right off the shelves at the Louisa County Library, patrons helped return them. A helpful community is a strong one. Just look at Louisa. n

Blues master Steve Riggs plays upright bass, Steve Vargo adds colorful guitar licks, Betty Jo Dominick’s accordion provides the gypsy and gospel melodies, and Dan Barrale on drums and Seth Johnston on percussion set the rhythm. The six-piece “adventure pop” band We Are Star Children plays the Pavilion on April 19. With their horn and synth cascade, surging rhythm section, and wall of rich harmony vocals, now they sound like a conventional rock and pop band, and now they don’t. Next up, on April 26, is Killer Deluxe. The “throwback brain child” of Andy Waldeck and Chris Reardon, this dynamic duo was at the heart of the groundbreaking, late 90s rock quartet, Earth To Andy. The genre-defying “New Appalachian” band Wild Common hits the stage on May 3, headed by former Wailers back-up singer and song writer Davina Jackson and by guitarist Brennan Gilmore, whose roots are in old-time and bluegrass music. Fiddle player Nate Leath, reggae drummer Rob Hubbard, jazz-loving bassist Dhara Goradia, keyboardist Bryan Holmes and, last but not least, Davina’s rapper son Atreyu Jackson, round out the band. Concerts last from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. The season runs through Thursday, September 5, as UVA has a home game on the 6th. Otherwise it’s every Friday night at the Sprint Pavilion. See you there! n

t’s a Charlottesville favorite, right up there with the Hoos and Bodos Bagels. Name all the finest Charlottesville players, starting with The Dave Matthews Band, Sons of Bill, and Corey Harris, and they’ve played the east end of the Downtown Mall on a Friday night. Ask any longtime local and they’ll remember those shows, or a dozen others—under the Pavilion roof, or under the stars when the Pavilion was just a grassy bowl, or way at the other end of the Mall outside the Omni in the mid-90s.

“One of the reasons for the success of the event is that at least 80-85 percent of the artists are local, Central Virginia-based acts,” Hutto notes. “It’s a fun gig for them to play, a chance for them to play in front of their friends and family.” Such fun for them, he says, that the booking process is insane. “I have 22 dates to fill, and when I start the process there are probably 80-100 artists on the list —that doesn’t even count the hundreds from out of the area that have heard of the event and want to come and play it. To all of those folks I have to politely say, ‘Sor-

ry, this is a local series.’ Sometimes it’s tough decisions about who gets a slot and who doesn’t in a given year.” What Fridays After Five General Manager Kirby Hutto calls “a celebration of summertime in Charlottesville” draws a large and diverse crowd. “When the weather is gorgeous, we’re going to be packed,” he says. “We’ll have upwards of 5,000-6,000 people through the gate

The Sprint Pavilion has a new fabric roof this year, but the free music, the food and drink sold to benefit local charities and the delicious feeling of a weekend just begun, are Fridays After Five traditions, now going on their 32nd year. From roots to reggae and blues to bluegrass, Fridays crowds hear all the best local sounds.

of the evening it’s a more young professional type of crowd.” The crowds are impressive. As long as the weather’s nice, “the first ones out of the gate every spring are just huge,” Hutto says. “We will get upwards of five to six thousand people. Come summer, much of the crowd shows up later, but even on a hot, muggy night, it’s three to four thousand strong.” That’s a boon to the area’s many merchants and restauranteurs. “We always try to end at a reasonable hour (8:30-8:40 p.m.) so our patrons can go down the Mall and patronize all the restaurants and bars,” Hutto says. “We try to spread the wealth while we’re down here. Restaurant owners this time of year, any time I walk down the Mall they’re asking me, ‘When does Fridays After Five start; why can’t you start it tonight?’ It really signals the beginning of their busy season, particularly for the folks that have the outdoor cafes.” Inside the Pavilion, local non-profits man the concession stands and reap the rewards. “It’s a really good fundraiser,” Hutto says. “We’ve got roles that we staff with the volunteers that require as few as four and up to as many as sixteen people a week. They don’t have to do any of the organizing, they don’t have to do any of the cleaning up—they just come down, we slot them in, and our paid staff takes care of getting everything set up and breaking it down at the end of the night.” Remuneration is based on the number of volunteer hours a group provides, “so that even if they come down and
