ay “Orange County,” and the first thing most of us think of is Montpelier, the 2,700-acre estate of President James Madison. But there is a whole lot more history, and a whole lotta good living to be found in Orange: good food, fine wine, pretty countryside, and lovely places just waiting to be called “home,” from three-bedroom ramblers to million-dollar mansions. Although it is just 17 by 37 miles, when it was established by the Virginia House of Burgesses the county extended as far as the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River—to “the utmost limits of Virginia.” That was in 1734. History here goes a little further back, however. The first evidence of human civilization in Orange County “is a Clovis spear point that was picked up on a farm near Somerset, that’s been dated to 10,000 B.C.,” says Frank Walker, a

dairy farmer turned lawyer, and pillar of the Orange County Historical Society. “The Paleos were here!” So were 160,000 soldiers of the Union and Confederate armies, which met at the Battle of the Wilderness in May of 1864 in the first clash between Generals Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee. At times both Confederate and Union forces made their headquarters at Ellwood Manor, a Georgian-style circa 1790 home, which served as a Confederate hospital after the war. Now on Route 20, the home is maintained by the National Park Service and is open to the public.

its early 19th century state. Today the entire property is “a memorial to James Madison and the Enslaved Community, a museum of American history, and a center for constitutional education that engages the public with the enduring legacy of Madison’s most powerful idea: government by the people.” The nearby town of Barboursville is proud of its own history. “Barboursville” was one of the largest homes in the area, and the only building in Orange County to have been designed in Neo-Palladian style by Thomas Jefferson. Constructed between 1814-1822, it was destroyed by fire on December 25, 1884. The wall, chimneys and pillars that remain, are now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and sit on land owned by one of Virginia’s finest wineries, Barboursville Vineyards. Each July they are the setting for Shakespeare in the Ruins, with performances by the Four County Players. Located in the town of Barboursville, Four County Players was founded by ten people in 1973, and is today Central Virginia’s longest continuously-operating community theater and “the cultural hub” of its community.

Another way to see county talent is to visit the Orange County Fair, a tradition each summer since 1910, first on the grounds of the county courthouse, and since 1987 at Montpelier. “An old-fashioned county fair in the truest sense,” it is known for 4-H Club exhibits, live music, traditional dancing, and historical displays. More fine work is on display every October at Montpelier at the Fall Fiber Festival & Montpelier Sheep Dog Trials. Go for the workshops, fiber arts demonstrations and displays, handson demonstrations, a fleece sale, fiber and crafts vendors, music, animal exhibits and, of course, the not-to-bemissed sheep dog trials—held in four classes of competition under the auspices of the Virginia Border Collie Association.

Wine and Zinnias “Orange County,” Ince notes with pride, “has some of the best soil in the area. That’s why these period homes and full plantations are there. It has the best land.”

Nine hundred acres of that land belong to one of the most esteemed enterprises in the county, Barboursville Vineyards, founded in 1976 by a family prominent in Italian viticulture since 1821. Barboursville was the first Virginia estate to plant Vitis vinifera vines since Thomas Jefferson tried and failed to produce a drinkable beverage on land near Monticello. Winery manager Luca Paschina has succeeded. Now considered one of the finest wineries in the Commonwealth, Barboursville Vineyards was honored to have its flagship Octagon wine, a Bordeaux-style blend, served to Queen Elizabeth II when she visited Virginia in 2007. Orange County is also the home of Horton Vineyards. Soon after Dennis Horton planted his first vineyard in 1983, he began searching for grape varieties best suited to Virginia’s warm and humid summers. In the Rhone Valley in southern France, Horton discovered the Viognier, whose thick skin and loose clusters made it perfect for the Virginia climate. Horton Vineyards currently bottles dozens of wines from

Viognier, Malbec and Cabernet Francs, to an array of fruit (pear, peach, etc.) and dessert wines. Farmers and viticulturists aren’t the only ones who appreciate Orange County soil. The Dolley Madison Garden Club is celebrating its centennial year. Founded in Orange in November 1919 by a group of civic and garden-oriented women, the Club’s mission is “to protect the rural heritage of the area, stimulate horticulture advancement, and undertake community improvement projects.” The zinnia, a flower associated with friendship, endurance, and constancy, is the Club’s official symbol.

See It Now Perhaps the best introduction to Orange County today is a trip along some of its gorgeous country roads. “Orange County has a couple of absolutely beautiful roads with 1920s and 1950s homes” Ince says. “Take Route 20 north from Charlottesville and go through Stoney Point in Albemarle County and then you’re in Orange County; that will take you through Barboursville and then Somerset and

Come Live in Orange What attracts newcomers to Orange County? “Privacy and nice surroundings—those are the key factors,” Ince says. “The Board of Supervisors has pretty much always been made up of voices sympathetic to very, very careful growth, realizing that the attraction of the area is its unspoiled, historic, beautiful countryside. The zoning regulations are fairly conservative as far as being able to divide land. There is a real conservation mindset.”

“The Gordonsville area has had a lot of historic preservation downtown,” notes Mandy Brown, REALTOR® with Century 21 New Millennium. “There are some tract builders that have come into Gordonsville, but for the most part it’s an older community.” A number of Gordonsville spots are on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Exchange Hotel. First frequented by railroad passengers, the hotel became the Gordonsville Receiving Hospital, providing care for 70,000 Union and Confederate soldiers. During Reconstruction the hospital served newly freed slaves. Now fully restored, this lovely building with its high ceiling parlors and grand veranda is a museum dedicated to the Civil War era.

into the town of Orange. It’s a beautiful road. “Then if you keep going straight on through the town of Orange it becomes Rapidan Road. That’s 615, and it’s absolutely gorgeous. The views on Rapidan Road are amazing. “Route 231 is another pretty drive. Take Route 20 from Somerset and go right to 231; that will wind you through some of the prettiest countryside you’ve ever seen, and you’ll come right out at Gordonsville. “The towns of Gordonsville and Orange are wonderful. Somerset is kind of a hidden gem—completely rural, pretty much all farms. People have been there for generations. Some of the most beautiful estates in Virginia are in Somerset. You have all these beautiful homes between Somerset and Gordonsville on Route 231. All you’re going to see is a driveway that might go a mile back to a period home. “Gordonsville is a nice little town. A renovation project five or six years ago laid out a lovely, walk-friendly Main Street. It’s pretty much all antique and craft stores. The Romchambleu is a four- or five-star restaurant. The Inn at Willow Grove in Orange is another nice restaurant. They have a satellite restaurant in Orange called Forked on Main, one of our favorite places.”

In terms of housing, “the county has a lot to offer, depending on what your preferences are,” Brown says. “Lake of the Woods is a huge planned, gated community with a wide range of homes from small, three-bedroom ramblers 30-40 years old, on up to million-dollar homes. There is a huge variety there.” The main entrance to Lake of the Woods is on Route 3. Approximately 4,260 lots, 850 with lake frontage, sit on 2,600 acres divided into 16 sections. Lake of the Woods Volunteer Fire and Rescue, Inc., provides round-the-clock fire and medical transport services. Lake of the Woods actually has two lakes, the Main Lake and Keaton’s Lake. The 500-acre Main Lake is fed by Flat Run and numerous springs, and has two marinas, seven lake access areas, and eight sand beaches. Keaton’s Lake, also called Fishing Lake, covers

35 acres, and has a public launch area and a sand beach, and is the site of the annual Lake of the Woods Children’s Fishing Tournament. In addition to swimming and boating on the lakes, residents enjoy a USGA golf course, an Equestrian Center, two outdoor swimming pools, tennis courts, a clubhouse, fitness center, community center, numerous parks with ball fields, and walking trails. “The town of Orange is an old town,” Brown says, “so you have the older homes, but it’s starting to get that influx of rehab and restoration. There is a new microbrewery called Ironworks that is opening up. A lot of new things are just coming into that town.” “There are a good number of properties with new homes on big lots in Orange County—three to five acres, something like that, with a nice new home,” Ince says. “They are a lot more affordable than the same thing in Albemarle County.” Horse lovers take note: “If you’re looking for a horse farm, don’t write Orange County off; it’s probably where you’re going to find your best land and your best prices.” “It’s a very Southern, rural community,” Brown says, and indeed it is: Southern, rural, historic and lovely.

The Heart of our Community BY MARILYN PRIBUS

T

he Independent Sector, an organization gathering statistics about charitable activities, places the estimated value of a volunteer hour at more than $25. The actual amount varies by state, but clearly volunteers are valuable people. Indeed, volunteers are at the heart of any community from folks giving time to their church or children’s activities to those helping persons escaping domestic violence, feeding the hungry, or rehabilitating wild creatures. The catalog of local efforts is nearly endless from working with Boys and Girls Clubs, thrift stores, food banks, or spending time (or writing checks) for fund-raising events like the Alzheimer’s Walk or the annual Charlottesville Women’s Four-Miler. Kate Faulconer, a REALTOR ® with Loring Woodriff Property Management, was awarded a well-deserved CAAR Good Neighbor Award earlier this year. Since 2016, she has volunteered more than 500 hours with Piedmont Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), a group which provides trained volunteers to advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children and youth.

Her interest arose from an incident when a young student of hers became involved with the court system, and she eventually went through CASA training. “It’s very important for these children to have someone who can and will advocate on their behalf,” she says, explaining that the length of her involvement with a case depends on its specifics and can last two years or more. “I once worked with a teen on a case that blew my mind,” she recalls. “When the teen was told ‘You don’t have the right to speak in court,’ I said, ‘Tell me what you want to say; I can speak for you.’” Faulconer points out how important this is. “CASA volunteers can help these children ‘speak’ through the volunteers’ voices, providing them a way to tell the court what the children need.” Another Good Neighbor awardee is Georgia Lindsey of Nest Realty Group who’s been recognized for her Meals on Wheels work over the past several years. She is the group’s vice president and has been active in their annual fundraiser which includes an ambitious silent auction that brings in thousands of dollars. “A good friend introduced me to our local Meals on Wheels,” she continues. “I was surprised to learn it’s an entirely independent organization, delivering

hot meals five days a week, 52 weeks a year—including all holidays—without any public funding.” The group also makes “Blizzard Bags” with several days’ worth of nonperishables to be available when bad weather prevents deliveries. Lindsey says she loves her REALTOR® work because it means getting to help her clients find the perfect place to call home. “I also realize how much Meals on Wheels helps people who want to stay in the homes they cherish despite not being able to cook,” she adds. “That’s all it takes to make me want to do whatever I can.” It’s not surprising that efforts to get and keep people in cherished homes lead REALTORS® and other community members to help out local housing-involved organizations. For example, some years ago the Charlottesville and Albemarle Housing Improvement Programs merged to become AHIP. AHIP has its own staff and work crews, but also depends on local subcontractors and volunteers to make repairs through the Emergency Home Repair Program. Projects might involve roofs, wells, septic systems, plumbing, electrical, heating, windows, handicap access retrofits and other needs. There is a substantial waiting list for services

OK, What can I Do?

Albemarle County resident Marilyn Pribus has a long resume history of volunteering from Cub Scout Den Mother to ushering at The Paramount and singing with the Charlottesville Threshold Singers.

When you read about a local organization such as Meals on Wheels, Habitat for Humanity, or AHIP, check out its website for details about opportunities for volunteers.

The internet is an excellent source for information. A recent visit to volunteermatch.org, showed listings for about 70 specific volunteer placements in our immediate area. The website is searchable by interests such as Health, Education, Children and other efforts. Each agency lists its requirements such as minimum age, training sessions, and whether a background check is required. In addition, the website lists virtual opportunities for serving remotely by computer. This can be ideal for folks with difficult schedules or travel limitations. Recent volunteer requests included online positions for graphic designing, translation, grant-writing, online counseling for teens who have suffered violence, and many other positions. “Volunteering is so important,” concludes Lindsey, the Meals on Wheels vice president. “Giving back to your community grounds you in a way nothing else can. It reminds you that we are all in this together, working and living in this same special place.”

which are prioritized for health and safety, especially when children and older folks are affected. Habitat for Humanity is another housing-involved group benefitting from volunteers with many local real estate professionals lending a hand. “We have always focused on affordable home ownership and neighborhood building,” explains Habitat’s President and CEO Dan Rosensweig. “Now we’re thinking beyond the house and beyond the neighborhood and bringing holistic benefit to residents and the community as a whole.” REALTOR® Anthony McGhee of Assist2Sell First Rate Realty chimes in. “We do anything we can to help with affordable housing, even if it doesn’t mean a paycheck for us. Our over-arching wish is that everyone has a home.” He explains that because adding to affordable housing and enabling ownership, benefits our entire area, volunteers work alongside prospective Habitat homeowners, donning hard hats and taking up hammers and paint brushes to help with home construction.
