he first shall be last and the last shall be first on Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall on December 31, when First Night Virginia 2020 makes the last night of 2019 one of its most memorable. An evening’s worth of music and magic, theater and dance, comedy and good cheer, First Night has been the family-friendly, alcohol-free way to celebrate the New Year here since 1982. Twenty-three attractions make up this year’s event.

The Main Event Comedy, juggling, unicycling, balancing and audience participation are

what Jesse Joyner has brought to audiences in over thirty states and on three continents, and will entertain us with in the First Night Virginia 2020 Main Event. Joyner learned to juggle in middle school. By the time his friends talked him into performing at his school’s talent show, he’d figured out how to juggle machetes and balance a six-foot ladder on his face. That was before he juggled three running chainsaws, juggled while completing a marathon, and won gold and silver medals at the World Joggling Championships (jogging and juggling at the same time). Joyner will bring his stunts and humor to the Omni Hotel Large Ballroom

for this year’s Main Event at 4:00, 6:30 and 9:00 p.m.

Comedy, Drama, Film A mix of Whose Line Is It Anyway, Second City, SNL, MadTV, Comedy Sports, and Comedy Central’s Premium Blend, the short form comedy troupe Bent Theatre Improv has been busting guts throughout Virginia since 2004, making comedy on the spot from audience suggestions. Bent Theatre will entertain at The Haven Sanctuary at 7:45 and 10:15 p.m. Unforgettable animation, fantastic stories and captivating characters are what movie fans expect from Disney and Pixar. See twelve Disney and Pixar

short films, including Academy Award nominated films, at Light House Studio at Vinegar Hill Theatre at 4:00 p.m. Ward Hill Lamon was Abraham Lincoln’s bodyguard, for over ten years, serving during the Republican National Convention, on the train from Springfield, Illinois to the inaugural in Washington, and throughout the Lincoln presidency. He was present at the assassination and rode on Lincoln’s funeral train. Charles Town, West Virginia historian Bob O’Connor, author of eleven books on the Civil War, will bring this mesmerizing portion of American history to life at First Night Virginia in Lincoln’s Bodyguard, in the Omni Ho-

Through her art, she aims “to make a contribution of beauty and peace in the world, an energy that can be felt and transmitted to the viewer.” Alter will help First Nighters make New Year’s cards in watercolor and mixed media in the Omni Hotel’s Lewis Clark Rooms at 4:00 and 5:15 p.m. Songs to Drive the Cold Winter Away is what Mira Vocal Ensemble calls this year’s annual First Night program. Founded in 2005 by director Raven Hunter, the Charlottesville-based group specializes in English and Flemish-style polyphony as heard in the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries, augmented by gems from the Medieval era, folk songs, and works by more contemporary composers such as Benjamin Britten whose compositions reflect the style of earlier periods. hearts at Holy Comforter Church at 7:45 and 9:00 p.m. Handbell choirs are a long running holiday tradition at many American churches. But how many church handbell choirs have an in-house composer? Nationally recognized composer and director Kath Wissinger founded the Mosaic Handbell Ensemble in the fall of 2010 to give dedicated ringers an opportunity to advance their skills. Today Mosaic has both sacred and secular pieces in its repertoire, including the popular Pirates of the Caribbean movie theme, which used three and a half octaves of handbells and hand chimes. This personable group of six Shenandoah Valley ringers will perform a wide variety of holiday music, from small vignettes to fully-orchestrated works using 100 instruments in all at the Omni Hotel Large Ballroom at 5:15 and 7:45 p.m. Indie soft pop and acoustic pop singer/songwriter Kat Somers started playing on the streets of Charlottesville when she was just 15-years-old, and would play for hours, taking any opportunity she had away from school, marching band, and soccer practice to share her music with whomever would listen. Now 24, Kat has released her debut EP Bloom, and two singles, “Ghosts” and “Jump In.” Kat will play The Front Porch at 4:00 and 5:15 p.m. Infectious drumming and dancing based on West African cultural traditions—that’s what the non-profit community group called Chihamba has been offering Charlottesville since 1989. Dedicated to providing a better understanding of African culture, the group delivers its message of peace and love with its customary exuberance— and with the help of the audience. Chihamba will get First Nighters up and dancing at Christ Church Meade Hall at 4:00 and 5:15 p.m. The students of the Blue Ridge Irish Music School Traditional Ensemble perform Irish music, song and dance. They’ll be at The Haven Sanctuary at 4:00 and 5:15 p.m. Fredericksburg’s Catharine Burgess, a senior at the College of William & Mary, has won numerous awards and trophies for her dancing in the U.S., Canada, and Scotland. Burgess is also a certified Scottish Official Board of Highland Dancing instructor. She will dance with Albemarle Pipes and Drums—established in 2006 to teach, perform and preserve the music and culture of Scotland and the British Isles—in Christ Church’s Meade Hall at 7:45 and 9:00 p.m. It feels good to belt out a song in the

tel’s James Monroe Room at 5:15 and 7:45 p.m. The four distinguished fellows who make up The League of Most Interesting Gentlemen share a deep interest in the history of our nation, particularly the period spanning 1750 to 1850. In 2014, the founding Gentlemen joined together to make the country’s Founding Fathers vivid and alive for Americans today. Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Albert Gallatin (diplomat and fourth Secretary of the Treasury) plus James Madison and/or naturalist, scientist, inventor and politician Charles Willson Peale will reminisce and converse with those interested in the origins of our nation at 4:00, 6:30 and 9:00 p.m. in the James Monroe Room of the Omni Hotel. History’s great individuals are much celebrated for their deeds, but the lives of ordinary citizens deserve study as well, and often reveal their own striking heroism. The Coachman is a short documentary film about the life of a beloved and highly esteemed African-American domestic worker on one of Albemarle County’s most distinguished estates. Born in 1887, he lived through slavery, Jim Crow, the Great Depression, the Great Migration, and World Wars I and II. Light House Studio Vinegar Hill Theatre will show The Coachman from 5:15 to 6:00 p.m. and 6:30 to 7:15 p.m.

Singer-Songwriter Showcase Local educator Emily Morrison founded the non-profit community music school called The Front Porch in her home in 2015, but soon relocated it to Water Street. More than 200 people now come to The Front Porch each week for classes, workshops and concerts. Seven local artists will play half hour sets at The Front Porch in this year’s Singer-Songwriter Showcase, starting at 7:00 and running until 10:30 p.m. Michael McConkey grew up in Maryland and took an interest in music at age 13. By the time he was 18, Michael and his older brother Kenny were in an 11-piece soul band, The McConkey Brothers and the Mystic Knights. Today McConkey lives in Afton, where he is the owner of Edible Landscaping. He’s also a poet and a one-man band. McConkey will play at 7:00 p.m. Charlottesville-based singer songwriter John Kelly has been playing solo acoustic for decades, beginning in Connecticut and New York City. Now a regular on the Central Virginia circuit, John is known for his soulful voice and insightful original songs. In January, 2020, he’ll release his latest record, In Between, featuring ten songs covering topics from the complexities of the world today to love, family, and more. Kelly will play The Front Porch at 7:30 p.m. Anne O’Brien is “an enigmatic siren for whom you’ve been a’pining.” A mother of two, she has released one full album (The Girl I Left Behind), an EP, and is currently working on “what sounds to be a rocker.” She plays at 8:00 p.m.

Charlottesville singer/songwriter Susan Munson has a hand in many musical projects, including the Grateful Dead cover band Alligator and its offshoot, Mama Tried (named after a Merle Haggard hit the Dead often covered). Her 2017 CD, Halfway to Anywhere, featured all original material. Munson’s solo shows concentrate on newer songs and the inspiration behind them. Hear her at The Front Porch at 8:30. Guitarist Aaron Evans has lived in Charlottesville all his life and began playing at age 12—that’s over 30 years now. A founding member of Indecision and Alligator, he also performs with Second Draw, which has just released its second CD. Evans will play at 9:00 p.m. Singer Songwriter Ralph Rush plays blues guitar, playing the old standards his own way, and drawing on the blues to write his own. Rush will play at 9:30 p.m. Scott T. (of “Philip St.”) is an old friend to the Charlottesville songwriting community, and is excited to reminisce with old favorites as well as play new tunes inspired by his recent endeavors into parenthood. Scott T. will take the stage at 10:00 p.m.

Prepare Your Home Now for a

2020 Sale BY CELESTE M. SMUCKER

O

n a whim, you stop by a model home to get some decorating ideas. Intrigued by the energy savings available you decide what you really want is a brand new home. Or perhaps you are looking for a larger house for a growing family or have plans to downsize, move to another city to be near family or to take a different job. Whatever your reason for moving, the good news is now is a great time to sell your home. REALTORS® have eager buyers ready to make a purchase—even during the winter months—many of whom are frustrated about the limited inventory of homes for sale. So, if you are ready to sell, the time to start preparing is now. Your first step, of course, is to contact your REALTOR®, but meanwhile here are some basics to get you started.

Pretend You are the Buyer Your home is your refuge, but when it’s time to sell it becomes a commodity that must compete effectively with others now already on the market. In other words, prepare it to look its best. And if your price range puts you in direct competition with new construction, you will need to be even more diligent.

Start by visiting open houses in your area to get a sense of the competition. Then imagine you are a buyer walking into your house for the first time. What would they notice about items that need to be fixed? Does your front door need paint or replacement? Is it time to finally get around to sealing the deck? What about that leaky faucet you stopped noticing months ago, or the outdated carpet or paint colors? If you are like many homeowners you are accustomed to your house the way it is and you overlook items that buyers will notice as soon as they walk in. And yes, they can paint and do repairs but most prefer to move into a space that requires little in the way of fix up. If they view these chores as Saturdays doing repairs instead of watching their favorite sports team or taking their kids for a hike they may quickly move on to your competition. In addition to repairing and sprucing up you will also want to remove clutter from countertops, bookcases,

refrigerator doors and closets. Take down family pictures, report cards and children’s artwork. While these have sentimental value for you to buyers they are eyesores preventing them from seeing their own stuff in your space. And be prepared for buyers to open every door and look inside. If cupboards and closets are messy or crowded, they may decide the house lacks storage space. Make sure everything is squeaky clean, which means no fingerprints on mirrors and cabinet fronts and that your fan blades (and even the top of your refrigerator) are free of dust. “Great curb appeal is critical,” says Michael Guthrie, CEO and Principal Broker with Roy Wheeler Realty Co., which means your exterior needs to look exceptional as well. You don’t want buyers to eliminate your house before they ever walk inside. If weather permits, add colorful bedding plants to your landscaping and in pots on your deck. This time

of year, though, be sure decks, porches walkways and driveways are free from snow and ice. A seasonally appropriate wreath is a nice touch as are electric candles in the windows and solar lights outlining your front walk.

Manage Repairs Your REALTOR®, who is well familiar with the competition, can advise on whether you should undertake projects like painting interior walls, upgrading carpet, sanding floors, or replacing countertops and light fixtures. Often agents, such as Betty Aguilar with Nest Realty, advise sellers to have their home professionally inspected. The inspection report will let you know about needed repairs you can reasonably do yourself and give you time to find the best, most cost-effective professional to handle any big items like the roof, or HVAC. If you wait for the buyers’ inspection report you may be under pressure to find someone who can do the job quickly to meet contract deadlines, which could cost more money. Also, the contract may require you to get all repairs done by a licensed contractor even if some are items you can easily fix yourself. If you have had recent work done on your house, provide written verification as this “can increase the home’s value in your buyers’ eyes,” Guthrie advises.

Ready, Set, Show Make your home look as light, bright and spacious as possible when buyers and their agents make an appointment to come by for a showing. Open the drapes, pull back shower curtains, put out clean towels and turn on lots of lights, even in the middle of the day. Always leave during showings and stay away until your visitors depart. Drop your dog at daycare or take him with you. Notice odors like doggy smell or cat litter and take steps to remove them. Your agent can advise you on how to do this. If you are ready to sell your home, call your REALTOR® today for the best advice about how to price it right and get it ready to sell. They can also help you buy your next home if you plan to stay in the area. If you move elsewhere, they can refer you to a top agent in that market who can help you find your next home. We detect smokescreens. Housing discrimination isn’t always obvious. These are the kinds of smokescreens you might run into:

“Sorry, we’ve changed our minds about selling.” “We just rented that apartment.” “It doesn’t look like you qualify for the loan.”
