Habitat for Humanity of Greater Charlottesville and Lowe’s Unite Women to Spotlight Need for Safe and Affordable Housing through Home Builds and Repairs during International Women Build Week WHAT: Habitat for Humanity International, Lowe’s and approximately 6,000 women volunteers will unite in more than 235 communities in the United States, India and Canada for International Women Build Week from March 4-8 to highlight the global need for safe and affordable housing. A prelude to International Women’s Day, the global event aims to build and repair nearly 540 homes while raising awareness of housing issues facing women and their families.

Habitat and Lowe’s are providing the tools for women to empower and educate themselves on skills used when repairing, restoring and constructing homes. By using the hashtag #BuildHer to share inspirational stories, experiences and ways to positively impact communities, Habitat and Lowe’s are uniting women for a central goal of encouraging and building each other up. Habitat for Humanity of Greater Charlottesville is building four new affordable homes on Nassau Street in Charlottesville. These homes will be purchased by local families who have partnered with Habitat to achieve their dream of a safe, decent affordable home.

On Friday, March 6, 20 volunteers will hang drywall at the Nassau Street homes, assisting Habitat homebuyer About Lowe’s in the Community

and single mother I’Knesha Pitts in building and purchasing her new home. I’Knesha is eager to move her family out of their current apartment, which is plagued by moisture issues. The mold aggravates I’Knesha’s asthma and causes her children to cough, yet she hesitates to let her daughters play outside. “There are cars flying back and forth and there’s a lot of violence going on over there,” she says. So, the family spends most of their time at her mother’s home. That will all change in just a few months.

Through homeownership, I’Knesha will create a legacy for her children, Zy’Nique, Za’Myah, and Jy’Asia. They will be 25 percent more likely to graduate from high school and 116 percent more likely to graduate from college compared with children from families who do not own their homes, according to the Joint Center for Housing Studies.

I’Knesha says their new home will provide a strong, lasting foundation on which the family can build a better future. “I want to have something they can fall back on, something to be ours,” she says. Are you an animal lover? Looking for an afternoon outing that’s fun for the whole family? Then join us Saturday, April 18th for Ales for Animals! Ales for Animals is a fun-filled event that supports and promotes three local nonprofits: Almost Home Pet Adoption Center, Hope’s Legacy Equine Rescue, and the Rockfish Wildlife Sanctuary.

Ales for Animals was organized by central Virginia resident Lynn Noland, who knows and supports the missions of all three organizations. “If you care about animals then you will love what these three groups do.” says Ms. Noland. “It’s important that we support these organizations that rescue so many different types of helpless animals. They provide crucially needed services in the community.”

Ales for Animals is happening at the Blue Mountain Barrel House in Arrington on April 18th from Noon to 5 p.m. This is a family fun event featuring music from Sally Rose and Eli Cook; kid’s activities, and a raffle. Craft ales and eats are available for purchase from the Blue Mountain Barrel House. You’ll also have a chance to meet the animals and representatives from
