Albemarle County Albemarle County was named in honor of Willem Anne van Keppel, Second Earl of Albemarle, and at the time (1744) the titular Governor of Virginia. Today it is best known for Monticello, the home Thomas Jefferson built for himself just outside of Charlottesville. Monticello is open daily, year round from 8:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and offers a variety of tours of the house and grounds. Just up the road from Jefferson’s place is James Monroe’s Ash Lawn-Highland, where archeologists have just discovered that well-preserved but as yet unexcavated remains, and not the still standing house on the property, are where Monroe and fam-
ily actually dwelt. Ash-Lawn Highland is open for tours year ‘round except for Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day. The house is open from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. through October. Special Slavery at Highland programs, focusing on the lives of enslaved African-American men, women, and children who worked on Monroe’s property, take place Fridays and Satur-

days from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Just a half a mile down the road from Monticello is Michie Tavern, which offered food, drink and lodging in the early 18th century. Self-guided tours take place daily from 9:00 a.m. to 4:20 p.m. Servers in period attire offer Southern lunch fare like fried chicken and pork barbecue, stewed tomatoes, black-eyed peas, and buttermilk biscuits.
Carter Mountain
Carter Mountain Orchard first invited the public to pick in 1974, when a freeze ruined most of its fruit, and there wasn’t enough left to justify hiring a picking crew. The family ran an ad in the newspaper, “cleaned out a tiny section of an old barn, set up a card table and a cigar box, and wondered if anyone would come.” They did. And they do. Picking season on

remnants of an old mill may be seen just ten feet below the water surface at the lake’s center. Mountain Laurel and dogwood trees line the shore on all but the northern portion of the lake. Gas motorboats are not allowed. Pleasant Grove Home at Pleasant Grove Park outside of Palmyra was built in 1854 by William D. Haden on nearly 1,000 acres owned by the Haden family since the late 1700s. The family grew wheat, Indian corn, oats and tobacco, and raised cattle, sheep and hogs. In 2004 the house and five surrounding acres, including the family cemetery in front of the house, were

vanna history, open daily with free admission. It is located on Route 53, two miles after turning off Route 15. Another place to find Fluvanna artifacts is at Palmyra’s handsome Old Stone Jail Museum, which dates to 1928. The Museum is open on Wednesdays from 1:00-4:00 pm and Sundays from 2:005:00 pm from June through September. Admission is by donation. The 969-acre Pleasant Grove property contains 21 miles of hiking, horse riding and mountain biking trails, following along the Rivanna River and its creeks and tributaries. The main hiking trail, Heritage Trail, mostly meanders along the river. Another popular route, the one-mile Sandy Beach Trail, begins at the Eastern Trailhead near the dog park on Rt. 53, and slopes gently downward through woods and fields to a sandy beach on the Rivanna, where hungry hikers are welcomed by Adirondack-type picnic shelters. Blazed and built by volunteers, this trail is accessible by wheelchair. The Pleasant Grove Dog Park, at the Eastern Trailhead entrance, features large and small dog runs for pets to exercise and play with other dogs. The six-mile round trip River Bluff Trail follows the Rivanna River over a couple of challenging hills and through a young forest.

Named after the Fluvanna River (“Anne’s River”), which flows along its southern border, Fluvanna County was carved out of Albemarle County in 1777, from land that was originally part of the Virginia Colony, the first of America’s original 13 colonies. It is still largely rural today. Fishermen love the bluegills, catfish, crappie and largemouth bass in Fluvanna Ruritan, a 50acre lake near Cunningham in northwestern Fluvanna County created in 1956 and fertilized by the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. Hearts: Dolley Madison in Popular Culture” has been inspired by Dolley’s posthumous, late-19th century career as America’s first female advertising icon. Montpelier is open seven days a week from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. In nearby Gordonsville the three-story building now called the Civil War Medical Museum at the Exchange Hotel was once a hotel for weary railroad passengers waiting while their trains were refueled. With its high ceiling parlors and its grand veranda, it must have been a welcome respite. Then the Civil War broke out, and in 1862 the Exchange Hotel became the Gordonsville Receiving Hospital, providing care for 70,000 soldiers, both Union and Confederate. During Reconstruction the hospital served as a Freedman’s Bureau, where assistance was offered to newly freed slaves. Today the Museum displays medical artifacts including surgical instruments, pharmaceutical bottles, medical knapsacks and panniers, stretchers, litters, prosthetic devices, and dental tools. Admission is $10 for n adults and $3 for children 8-12.

Madison County Madison County was carved out of Orange County in 1792 and named for the Madison family, who owned land along the Rapidan River. President Herbert Hoover bought land along the upper Rapidan in 1929, in what is now Shenandoah National Park, and established Camp Hoover, his country retreat throughout his presidency. Guests included Thomas A. Edison, Charles Lindbergh and his wife Anne Morrow Lindbergh, and Winston Churchill. The three camp buildings – the Brown House (President’s Cabin), the Prime Minister’s Cabin, and the Creel – have been restored to Hooverera condition in the park. Interpretive signs help visitors picture life during Hoover’s time in what is now called Camp Rapidan. From late spring through fall, Shenandoah National Park offers a 2.5-hour ranger-guided tour of the Hoovers’ presidential getaway. Reservations are required.
Nelson County Bounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains to the northwest, and the James River on the southeast, Nelson County was created in 1807 and named for Thomas Nelson Jr., the third Governor of Virginia and one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.
Loop is the Nelson County Farmer’s Market in Nellysford, Saturdays May through October from 8:00 a.m. till noon. The Loop continues along Route 664, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and Route 56 through the lower foothills of the Piedmont and into the Blue Ridge Mountains, with breweries and cideries, apple and peach farm markets, pumpkin patches, restaurants and historic structures including an 1830s manor house along the way. Close by the Blue Ridge Parkway is the beautiful Wintergreen Resort, an 11,000-acre, four-season playground. Situated on the eastern slopes of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Wintergreen offers magnificent mountain views and a host of recreational amenities including 45 holes of championship golf, an award-winning tennis program, a full-service, mountaintop spa, and lovely sites to hike, swim and fly fish. In cold weather Wintergreen’s 400-gun snowmaking system showers its slopes with as many as 8,000 gallons of the white stuff a minute, making it
When Orange County was created in August 1734 by the Virginia House of Burgesses, its western borders extended to “the utmost limits of Virginia” – the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River. Four years later Augusta County was created, and was deeded most of that uninhabited land. But for those brief years Orange was the largest county in the country. James Madison’s Montpelier home on Route 20 (Constitution Highway) has been magnificently restored to the way it looked in James and Dolley’s lifetime. Montpelier is where Madison, studying books on governance given him by Thomas Jefferson, more or less envisioned the United States Constitution, which he would later play such a key role in drafting. James and Dolley welcomed many guests to their Montpelier mansion and their nearly 2,700-acre estate with magnificent views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Visitors today can tour the drawing room, dining room and library, follow the progress of ongo-

Getting the Kids Out Into
S
CAAR REAL ESTATE WEEKLY WWW.CAAR.COM
BY MARILYN PRIBUS
tudies show today’s children spend an average of 7 hours of “screen time” with electronics of some sort every day. The Surgeon General recommends an hour a day in the outdoors for health and wellbeing of children (and adults, too!) Wondering just how important is it for children to get out into nature? “I could go on and on,” declares Bruce Gatling-Austin, Education Programs Coordinator for Charlottesville’s Ivy Creek Foundation. “The natural world helps children develop a unique sense of their identities. It’s a place where ideas and thoughts can be tested and explored without grading. Outdoors
NATURE
is the ultimate place for unstructured time where children have a chance to develop thinking and creativity.” Gatling-Austin, a Certified Interpretive Guide and Certified Interpretive Trainer, is responsible for Charlottesville area school and public programs addressing the nature education needs for residents of all ages. He also oversees the Ivy Creek Foundation Facebook page. “I grew up outdoors through structured programs like Boy Scouts and unstructured time tromping around in the woods near my house,” he recalls. “I remember box turtles and skunk cabbage and lots of trees to climb.” (He says that box turtles are still his favorite wild creatures.) Because it’s so important for children to be outdoors, it’s wise for adults
to model spending time in the natural world and Gatling-Austin sees central Virginia as a great location because of the ease of getting outdoors. In fact, more and more community developments include greenways and nature areas right where people live. “There is just so much out there,” he says. “The Ivy Creek area is a good place to go, the Ragged Mountain Natural Area is open to the public
Saunders-Monticello Trail
during daytime hours, and there are area parks as well.” Walnut Creek Park, for example, offers swimming, canoe rental, picnicking, and 15 miles of bike, hiking, and running trails. He also mentions the 2-mile-long Saunders-Monticello Trail, which climbs the side of Carter Mountain and leads to Monticello over the recently completed stone-arch Saunders Bridge. Ivy Creek offers interactive children’s programs. Take, for example, butterfly walks which begin indoors with an informational session. “By the time the children are started outdoors, they are ready to see things in nature,” Gatling-Austin explains. Other programs include “Little Naturalists” aimed at children 3-5 years old with a short talk and trail walk, native plant
Unprogrammed time Gatling-Austin points out that a lot of children’s outdoor time is involved with organized sports and other programmed situations. “It’s better to show children that outdoors is wonderful by letting them experience it rather than telling them or watching a video about it,” he says. What is ideal, he suggests, is spending regular time outside with youngsters without a plan. When you’re at a natural area, stay in sight for safety, but let children explore on their own. Show them how to read a trail map if one is provided, then let them choose the route. If you have a yard, you don’t even have to go anywhere. “Sit in a comfortable place and just watch,” he advises. “Just wait quietly and the shy creatures you disturbed will start to come back.”
(Insect repellent recommended!) Resist the temptation for “teaching moments” and just observe. Here are other suggestions from Gatling-Austin:
• Go outside and enjoy all kinds of weather—hot, cold, damp, or dry. Let your children know what rain smells like. Sit safely on a covered porch and experience the passing of a thunderstorm. • Go barefoot. Walk through puddles. • Listen to sounds. Be silent and see how far and how much you can hear. • Count butterflies. Draw birds at a birdfeeder.
• Learn about poison ivy. “Because of all the rain this season there is so much more of it,” Gatling-Austin says. “See what it looks like and how to avoid it without being afraid.” • Learn about ticks and other annoying pests. Wear long pants in the woods, when you come out, change your clothes • Camp in a tent in the back yard during the day and even overnight. If you have a safe spot, have a bonfire now and then.
National Wildlife Federation a great resource The National Wildlife Federation’s website at www.nwf.org is an excellent idea launcher with 62 pages of activities for children, searchable by age, cost, duration, physical challenge, and difficulty. Here are just a few examples: • Make a nature mobile from items you find. • Gather seeds and pods, then glue them together to make fanciful creatures.
What is ideal, he suggests, is spending regular time outside with youngsters without a plan. When you’re at a natural area, stay in sight for safety, but let children explore on their own.
• Draw designs with washable markers, then set them out in the rain to watch the designs as your ink spreads across the paper. • Make leaf prints on paper or fabric. • Keep a moon journal. • Observe insects at night. Sit in the dark to watch fireflies—what color are they and how many times they flash. A light will attract other insects. • Give children a place to display special items they have found. Buy (or better) help them make a bird house or a beneficial bug box. • Provide materials for a “fort.” Buy an inexpensive tent or use a tarp or blanket atop a table or suspended from a rope between two trees. • Invest in a library of nature guides to identify birds, trees, and insects. There are dozens of ways to lure youngsters into the outdoors in our area. Make the most of them to increase children’s general health. n
