Virginia Orchards Ripe for the Picking BY KEN WILSON

S

o, an apple a day keeps the doctor away, as we’ve always been told, but who stops at just one? Nary an apple lover in orchardrich Central Virginia, where a Fuji mixed into oats makes a perfect breakfast, a sliced Ginger Gold naturally accompanies a lunchtime sandwich, and the sight of a Granny Smith makes a baker dream of pie. How many apples a day does it take to live to 100? Some of us around here may find out. Healthy habits, great views, and a welcome crisp in the air draw us out fruitpicking each autumn. Aren’t we lucky! We’ve been cultivating fruit here since the English first settled Jamestown. In 1629, Captain John Smith wrote that apples, peaches, apricots, and figs were “prosper[ing] exceedingly” in the Virginia Colony. By 1642 Virginia’s first governor, William Berkley, was cultivating 1,500 fruit trees; in 1694 he decreed that every planter must, “for every 500 acres granted him...enclose and fence a quarter-acre of ground near his dwelling house for orchards and gardens.” By 1800, some Virginia orchards held as many as 10,000 trees. Thomas Jefferson’s eight-acre, horseshoe-shaped Monticello “Fruitery” held 400 trees, two small vineyards, plus beds for figs and strawberries, “berry squares” for currants, gooseberries, and raspberries. America’s First Foodie grew eighteen varieties of apples alone, including the Esopus Spitzenburg, his favorite to eat, and the Taliaferro, now thought to be extinct, his favorite for cider. He also grew pumpkins for himself, his family and guests, and to feed his workhorses, cattle, sheep, and pigs. In the 21st century, agriculture is Virginia’s largest private industry, and we’re the sixth-largest apple-growing state in the country, producing an average of 5-6 million bushels each year on nearly 12,000 acres. Apples and apple products add approximately $235 million to our economy annually, and our apples are sold in 15 states and in more than 20 countries. USDA statistics for 2019 show that Virginia had 9,500 yield-bearing acres of apples, producing an estimated 190 million pounds or 20,000 pounds per acre. A bushel of apples weighs approximately 48 pounds, which translates into almost 4 million bushels. No less than 98.8 million pounds (approximately 52 percent) of Virginia apples were processed into cider, apple butter and other products. Here in Central Virginia’s many orchards, ‘tis the season for tasting, picking, and festival-going with the whole family.

Monticello Apple and Cheese Tasting Assiduous student of the science of farming that he was, Thomas Jefferson would be curious to see what Virginia produces in the 21st century. On Saturday, October 23 from 10:00 a.m. to noon, Monticello will offer the opportunity to taste and compare heirloom and conventional apples, sample cheese pairings and hard ciders, tour its Tufton

Carter Mountain Orchard and Chiles Peach Orchard Albemarle County’s Chiles family has been growing fruit here for five generations—over 100 years—first planting peach and apple trees in Crozet in 1912, and, since the 1970s, operating Carter Mountain Orchard just down the hill from Monticello. After a bad freeze in 1974 left the family with so little fruit that the usual picking and packing routine wasn’t worth its while, it ran an ad

in the newspaper, “cleaned out a tiny section of an old barn, set up a card table and a cigar box, and wondered if anyone would come.” They did. They still do. What was meant to be a one-time, emergency measure became an annual April through November, pick-your-own-fruit tradition at both the Crozet and Carter Mountain orchards. Located next to Michie Tavern, down the road from Monticello, Carter Mountain Orchard offers a 40-mile view, and grows 17 varieties of apples plus three

kinds of peaches. Picking season on the mountain starts in mid-August and runs through November; the variety of apples alone which are available at both Carter Mountain and Chiles is impressive. Albemarle Pippins and York apples are offered through November, Fuji, Gala, Golden Delicious, Granny Smith, Jonagold, Red Delicious, Rome, Stayman and Winesap through December. Ready-picked pumpkins are also available. The Thursday Evening Sunset Series on Carter Mountain features live music,

Farm, and learn apple history from Charlotte Shelton of Albemarle CiderWorks. The Richard D. & Carolyn W. Jacques Foundation will exhibit antique apple peelers and presses, the Monticello Farm Table café will serve apple-based food items, and Albemarle CiderWorks will give hard cider tastings. A limited selection of grown-at-Monticello apple trees will be for sale. Meanwhile, the Kids’ Apple Zone will have crafts and play activities. Tickets are $36, kids 11 and under get in free.

Seamans’ Orchard in Tyro in Nelson County grew out of a family agricultural business begun in 1933. Third and fourth generation Seamans still operate the orchard and live on the land, growing about 25 varieties of apples, including Jonathan, Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, Virginia Gold, Mutsu, Jonagold, September Wonder (Early Fuji) and Empire, plus pumpkins, blueberries, cherries, strawberries, and wine grapes. The orchard is open Monday to Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Apple butter, jams, jellies, local honey, and cider are also for sale.

Drumheller’s Orchard Everette (E.O.) and Eva Drumheller established Drumheller’s Orchard back in 1937, planting peach and apple trees on an unattended Lovingston farm. Their son Darrell began helping in 1957, designing a 110-gallon apple butter kettle with an electric stirrer. Now in its fifth generation of running the farm, the

Vintage Virginia Apples and Albemarle Ciderworks Not far away, the Shelton clan has farmed here since 1986 when Bud and Mary Shelton bought a plot of land in North Garden, named it Rural Ridge after Rural Plains (their family seat in eastern Virginia) and built their dream house. With the help of their four children, Bud and Mary planted some 20 fruit trees— apple, pear, peach, and cherry. In 1992, inspired by Monticello’s heirloom apple tastings conducted by the late author and apple historian Tom Burford, the Sheltons purchased trees from Burford’s orchard. Today they have more than 200 cultivars, including the Esopus Spitzenburg and other enticingly named rarities like the Belle De Boskoop, the Bleinheim Orange (dessert apples), the Dolgo Crab (originally Siberian, and excellent for jellies) and the Spice of Old Virginia (richly aromatic and perfect for apple butter). The Sheltons have collected about three dozen peach varieties, plus plums, pears, cherries, nectarines and apricots, and they sell over 100 varieties of vintage fruit trees, many of them virtually unobtainable anywhere else. In 2000 the family founded Vintage Virginia Apples, and in 2009, opened Albemarle CiderWorks. They are open daily from 11:00 a.m.to 5:00 p.m. and currently have 13 cider varieties available for tasting and sale. As

Seamans’ and Silver Creek Orchards have held Apple Butter Makin’ Festivals together on the first and third Saturdays in October for 30+ years, making apple butter the old-fashioned way in large copper kettles. This year’s fests fall on October 2 and 16 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Pumpkin pickers are welcome, and the corn maze will be . . . easy to enter. Apple lovers can choose among Rome, Fuji, Granny Smith, Arkansas Black, Black Twig, Winesap, and Pippin varieties. Pink Lady, Gold Rush, Sweet Cheeks, and Lady Apples will be for sale beginning on October 24.

Graves Mountain Lodge Over in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Madison County, Graves Mountain Lodge is a rustic country resort that that prides itself on down home hospitality, home cooked food, and “unrivaled” natural beauty. In business for 135 years, its free autumn Apple Harvest Festival has happened for a mere 53. The crop is excellent this year, and the 2021 Festival is slated for Saturdays and Sundays from October 2 through 17. Festivalgoers will hear bluegrass and country music while browsing the stalls of over 65 vendors and crafters. The Lodge’s farmyard and petting zoo will hold pigs, goats, and sheep. Have a look at the many other Festival attractions. Hayrides (with distance and masks please); hay maze (with distance between groups); pony rides; mule cart rides around the longhorns and ponies;

Drumheller family began holding fall festivals in the 1970s. Drumheller’s Orchard 2021 apple festivals will be the weekends of September 25 and 26, and October 16 and 17 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Look for Black Twig, Fuji, Gala, Granny Smith, Golden Delicious, Grimes Golden, Jonathan, Mutsu, Red Delicious, Rome, Stayman, and Winesap. Arkansas Black and Pink Lady apples are available a little later in the season. Along with apples, attendees will find apple butter and cider, honey, side meat, country hams, cookbooks, pumpkins, baskets, and baked goods. The Drumhellers serve their cider non-pasteurized, with no additives or preservatives, and they make their apple butter—apples, sugar, and spices—from the same recipe they’ve used for generations. Their side meat and country hams are cured in southern Virginia. Activities will include hayrides to the pumpkin patch and corn maze, an apple sling shot, and kids zone. The corn maze will be open, weather permitting; good food and country music are certain. The Ruritan Club will sell BBQ chicken and sandwiches, plus hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, and drinks. Other vendors will offer funnel cakes, pork skins, apple dumplings, and Brunswick stew. Regular hours at Drumhellers are Tuesdays through Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 5:00 p.m. Apples are nutritious and delicious 24/7. How many can you eat?
