Disabilities Public Safety Forum in Charlottesville Local resources unite to host free event for the community The Charlottesville Region Autism Action Group—in collaboration with Arc of the Piedmont, the Virginia Institute of Autism, Blue Ridge Care Connection for Children, and officials from Fire, Police, EMS and 911—announces a Free Disabilities Public Safety Forum designed to raise awareness about the public safety challenges faced by individuals with disabilities. One in five people in Virginia have a significant disability, including approximately 147,000 diagnosed with autism or another developmental disability. One primary goal of this Public Safety Forum is to make sure everyone understands how those with autism and other disabilities may react in an emergency. Another goal is to make sure first responders know how to minimize fear and anxiety for the individual and family. The forum will be held Saturday, September 30th from 9 a.m. until noon at the Martin Luther King Performing Arts Center at Charlottesville High School, and will include a panel discussion with community members and first responders, tables with support resources, emergency personnel in uniform, and emergency vehicles on site. Historic Garden Week 2018: Southwest Mountains Rural Historic District, Keswick Hunt Country Charlottesville Garden Club is honored to host the 2018 Historic Garden Week from April 21-23, as it celebrates 85 years of fundraising to preserve

the beauty and natural habitats of the Commonwealth. The inspiration for Historic Garden week was born out of a fundraiser in 1927 to save trees planted by Thomas Jefferson at Monticello. This year’s tour takes us to the bucolic Keswick hunt country of Albemarle County. All properties are nestled in the heart of the Southwest Mountain’s Rural Historic District. Enjoy estate architecture and stunning gardens that have come to typify Mr. Jefferson’s Central Virginia. On Sunday’s House and Garden Tour visit properties that include a 1,250-acre estate on the Virginia Landmark Register, an 18th century home with a never-before-on-tour formal gardens and extensive arboretum, a contemporary, award-winning farmhouse, and historic Grace Episcopal Church. On Saturday, as part of the three-day tour, visit the home and gardens of Morven Estate, near Monticello. On Monday, visit Pavilion residences and restored gardens along the Lawn at the University of Virginia as well as Car’s Hill, the home of the university’s president. Throughout the weekend enjoy artists at work in the gardens, restaurants featuring locally-sourced food, award-winning vineyards, craft breweries, and boutique shopping in the Tour’s Marketplace. The Rivanna and Albemarle Garden clubs join us in presenting this tour. Tour proceeds are used for the restoration and preservation of historic Virginia gardens, landscapes, state parks, a research fellowship program and other initiatives supporting the Garden Club of Virginia’s mission. Local Therapists and Organizations Pledge Hundreds of Free Counseling Sessions to Address Mental Health Needs of Community Over 50 private therapists have committed more than 300 hours of free counseling support in response to stress and trauma resulting from the attacks of August 12. Counseling services from these private, pro-bono therapists and local non-profit organi-

zations are available to anyone in the community by calling the Help Happens Here information and referral line at (434) 227-0641. Research shows that psychological support after a traumatic event can help reduce painful feelings and prevent or lessen the impact of trauma. Exposure to traumatic events, whether direct or indirect, can result in stress reactions which may include combinations of confusion, fear, hopelessness, helplessness, sleeplessness, physical pain, anxiety, anger, grief, shock, aggressiveness, mistrustfulness, guilt, shame, shaken religious faith, and loss of confidence in self or others. It is critical to know and recognize signs of stress, and to take steps to manage that stress. Some recommendations for stress management resulting from community violence include: • Know that you are not alone. Reach out to friends and family members who are likely experiencing feelings similar to your own. • If feelings of stress are severe or persist beyond 2-4 weeks, find mental health resources through the Help Happens Here referral line 434-2270641 or website (www.helphappenshere.org). • Seek support from places and people who help you feel safe, calm, connected, and hopeful, particularly if you are working to address challenging community issues. • Use gentle exercise as a way to release stress hormones. • Maintain healthy sleep and eating habits. Reduce consumption of caffeine and alcohol, that can increase stress. • Take a break from media and social media when needed. Listen to calming music instead. • For parents, pay close attention to children and allow them to ask

questions. Model good self-care and find resources on helping them cope with a traumatic event. As our residents begin to reckon with and integrate their many feelings about the impact of this summer’s events, it is more important than ever to work together to support our community’s mental health needs. According to Rebecca Kendall, Community Mental Health and Wellness Coalition Director, “Charlottesville is blessed to have many mental health organizations, private providers, and faithbased organizations that are working to provide support to individuals who need it at this time.” The following are just some of the resources available for managing trauma and stress from recent events. Counseling Services Help Happens Here connects residents with organizations and private therapists offering free counseling support for stress and trauma by calling (434) 227-0641. The referral line is answered Monday-Friday between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. www.helphappenshere.org Brief, Pro-Bono Counseling is available through Counseling Alliance of Virginia. What is pickleball? According to the USA Pickleball Association it is “a fun sport that combines many elements of tennis, badminton and pingpong.” It is played with paddles and a plastic ball with holes and can be enjoyed either inside or out. usually a flurry of activity associated with the Parade of Homes the first two weekends of October. “The new construction market has been strong,” Reres said, “with buyers enjoying the option of working with

several local and excellent builders.” Ammons added that the demand for new construction comes both from people wanting to move into Glenmore from elsewhere and those relocating within the community. These new

home buyers look forward to choosing a home design and materials that suit them rather than living with or updating those of the previous owners. “This ability to customize a home to their own specifications combined with the

improved energy-efficiency, warranty and reduced maintenance cost of ownership, has made new construction a very popular choice,” he continued. What are the most cost-effective ways to improve your home for resale value? “Kitchens, master bedrooms, and master bathrooms bring the greatest return,” says Byrd Abbott of Roy Wheeler Realty Co. who’s been selling homes for 35 years. “They are usually the most important rooms in the house for women. If they walk into a place that is really outdated, all they’re seeing is so much work to be done, and for most people the expense proportion is usually much greater than in fact it’s going to be. If someone is making an offer on a house and they see the kitchen or the bathroom need to be redone, in their mind they’re discounting the house two to three times what the cost is of doing those things. They’re also thinking of their time being spent to coordinate and pick out things and oversee what needs to be done.”

KITCHEN REMODEL “We are seeing huge interest in kitchen and bathroom remodeling,” Nicole Sithithavorn of Remodel USA agrees. “That seems to be the hot ticket right now. Also basements, because adding livable square footage is always a plus.” Along with that extra space, open floor plans are especially appealing these days, Abbott adds: “That seems to be really important to most generations now.”

BATHROOM REMODEL Remodeling Magazine rated projects in the Richmond area, pitting their construction costs against the cost recouped upon resale to find the percentage of cost recouped. Here are some of the specifics they found for average and larger sized projects. Midrange (average-sized) projects: Major kitchen remodel, 44.7 percent; minor kitchen remodel, 55.1 percent;

Real estate agents were most likely to recommend replacement rather than addition projects. But what does a homeowner need to know before they say the word “go”? Home improvement “takes longer than what they see on TV,” says James Robertson of Robertson Renovations. “A lot gets done in those commercial breaks apparently!” Also bear in mind, as Remodeling points out, that the value of a home remodeling project or addition is ultimately subjective, and will thus vary from buyer to buyer. I can build it, but I want you to be happy with what I’ve built.” Even when a particular remodeling job likely won’t pay off financially upon resale, Abbott says, “the house will be appealing to more buyers,” and that, she wisely notes, is the most important factor. “Until you get people talking to you you’re not going to sell the house.” n

Extra space also means extra maintenance, and extra maintenance (and energy) costs. Flooring and lighting are two other issues to consider carefully, Abbott says. “One of the things you’re typically seeing when you remodel is a lot more lighting. I think a lot of people don’t realize that outlets need to be repositioned, or maybe you need a little more electricity than you thought you did.” Blending new and old types of flooring, or matching the new to what it’s abutting may require extra thought and time as well. “In remodeling and additions it is hugely important to have a well thought out design,” says Todd Buck of Weston Construction. “By the time that we start building you should have a really good understanding of the products that are in the project, and what the cost of that project should be. Depending on the age of the house there are always possible unknowns, but you can minimize those if you take the time to invest in some design work. The term that architects like to use is ‘What is the program of this room?’ Things like spatial relationships of a couch and a table—most of the time
