NEOGEN ACQUIRES LIVESTOCK GENETIC SERVICES

On September 4, Neogen announced it had acquired Livestock Genetic Service. After speaking with John Genho, the ABBA staff learned that there would be very few changes to the ABBA registration system. The contract is being transferred to Neogen as it currently stands so all the terms will be identical. ABBA will continue to work directly with the programmer Zach Johnson, who will continue to be the main architect for the registration system. Because of the acquisition, the registration system will pick up some additional capabilities that will be built in over time. These include credit card processing and e-commerce. The biggest change will be how the DNA results interact with the registration system, which is expected to be a positive change. Breeders will still have the option of choosing which lab will process their DNA tests.

NEOGEN ACQUIRES LIVESTOCK GENETIC SERVICES On September 4, the Neogen Corporation announced that it had acquired the assets of Livestock Genetic Services (LGS). LGS is a Virginiabased company that was contracted last year to build and manage the American Brahman Breeders Association’s registry software. According to LGS founder John Genho, ABBA members will notice very little differences in the near future. However, in the long run, they will have access to more features in terms of genomic integration capabilities along with better customer service and e-commerce functions because of this merger. “After years of collaboration with Neogen, I am very pleased to be part of the much larger, very capable team of genomic professionals,” Genho said. “Our business has grown to the point that becoming part of a world-leading provider of animal genomic services will provide my customers with the best possible services and support.” According to the ABBA, “the contract is being transferred to Neogen as it currently stands so all the terms will be identical.” The association will continue to work directly with LGS’s database programmer Zach Johnson, the main architect for the ABBA’s new online registration system. Neogen’s Director of Sales and Marketing Tom Schultz empathized that the acquisition is not a play to harvest member data nor is it an attempt to force ABBA members to genotype specifically with Neogen. “Data privacy is one of our pillars to success, and we have compartmentalized LGS’s assets separate from other Neogen projects per our contractual obligation,” Schultz said. “It is not our intent to compete with current genetic evaluations or to El 4 de septiembre, la Corporación Neogen anunció que había adquirido los activos de Livestock Genetic Services (LGS). 2018 Fall Trait Leaders The trait leader information has been adapted from information provided by the ABBA. We have included the top 10 bulls for each trait. We have also included photos of the “Top 5 Modern” trait leaders along with the “Top 5 Overall”. The “Modern” list includes animals born after January 1, 1998. There were a few traits that did not have five bulls born after 1998 so the time frame was adjusted accordingly. The rank listed on the photos of the “Modern” bulls reflects their overall trait leader ranking. We are running this feature as a service to our readers and are not responsible for any inaccuracies in the data.

Accuracy Accuracy for an EPD may range from 0.0 to 1.0. As the accuracy approaches 1.0, the EPD is more reliable and changes less in the future as more data is accumulated. Accuracy can be rated as follows: LOW - 0.0 to 0.39; MEDIUM - 0.4 to 0.64; and HIGH - 0.65 to 1.0.

Contemporary Groups The effects of contemporary groups are adjusted for in the analysis procedure. This results in the EPDs being computed as though all animals were in one large contemporary group. This is the reason the EPDs can be compared across herds. The proper identification of the contemporary in which an animal is raised is of utmost importance for an accurate evaluation of the animal and its parents. Breeders should be aware of the definition of a contemporary group: 1) Animals of the same sex. 2) Animals of similar age (try to keep animals within 180-day birth date spread) and 3) Animals managed together and given equal opportunity to perform (re. same pasture, same feed, same weigh dates, etc.). Producers need to send the ABBA complete information on the management of their cattle so that contemporary groups can be properly assigned. Most inaccuracies in EPDs have been linked to misidentification of contemporary groups.

ABBA Trait Leaders BREEDER: ZEID SAB

The following sires are the current ABBA Trait Leaders. For a bull to be recognized as a Trait Leader he must have met the specific requirements set forth by the American Brahman Breeders Association. First, only bulls that have the designated accuracy for the specific trait

are considered. Once the sire has met the accuracy requirement he must be within the top 20 of the breed in the respective trait and have had at least one progeny registered within the previous two years. This process is many times misinterpreted as simply listing the top 20 bulls for a trait; however, only proven bulls can be considered as Trait Leaders. When using EPDs as tools to help in the sire selection process it is important to remember to select a balanced bull with acceptable ranges for all traits rather than selecting a bull for one desired trait as this can yield a less than optimum outcome.

New Traits In recent months, Calving Ease and Calving Ease Maternal EPDs have been added to the ABBA lineup of EPDs. The Calving Ease EPD is designed to reﬂect the probability that the animal will be able to be born without assistance. The higher the number is the less likely the animal will need human intervention to assist with its birth. This trait focuses directly on the growth aspects of that individual animal as a calf in utero. The Calving Ease Maternal EPD focuses on the potential of that animal as a parent. It looks at a dam’s ability to give birth unassisted, or if it is a bull, the EPD is a prediction of his ability to sire females that will be able to have calves unassisted. Again, the higher number is preferred. Both EPDs are calculated using reported calving ease scores as well birth weight data.

Deep South Field Day

The Deep South Brahman Association Educational Field Day was held at K Bar Farms, owned by Carolyn Falgout, in Tylertown, Mississippi on August 18, 2018. The event was hugely successful with more than 80 Brahman enthusiasts in attendance from Mississippi, Texas, Louisiana, Alabama and Florida. Former ABBA Executive Vice President Chris Shivers was the Master of ceremonies. Presentations and demonstrations featured cutting-edge industry leaders. The day started with grass expert Mike McCormick discussing soil samples. Dennis Ware discussed several important topics ranging from water to rotational grazing, fencing and minerals. Bud Spencer gave a hoof trimming demonstration and the crowd was delighted to hear from LeAnne of the Mississippi Cattlemenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Association and Alex Lowery of the Mississippi Farm Bureau. Of course, K Bar Farms is known for their southern hospitality and provided a great lunch for everyone in attendance.

Following the meal, Seth Maxie discussed halter breaking. Then, Val Walters and Rodney Finch hosted a showmanship clinic. Dr. Tiger Hulsey and Dr. Craig Fontenot discussed deworming and vaccination protocols. Chance Hinton presented on dehorning cattle, and Charlie Ciolino of Star Power and Equipment wrapped up the presentations with a discussion of Field Maintenance. At the end of the day, the President of the Louisiana Brahman Association, K Barâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s own Clint Galiano, took visitors on ranch tours of the scenic Tylertown division of K Bar Farms.

Bos indicus Cattle & A2 Milk About the Author: Cyndie Marler has been living between Maharashtra, India and Tulsa, OK since 2010. In 2011, she was invited to travel to the south of Maharashtra, the native place of one of her employees. She fell in love with the agrarian culture and founded a nonprofit organization to address sustainability and capacity-building issues for farming communities. She is particularly interested in the medicinal and healing properties of Desi cows, their relevance and importance in Indian culture, and India’s efforts to restore their nearly extinct populations. Toward this end, she is currently working with small to medium-sized dairies and farmers on projects to help establish best practices of breeding, pedigree record-keeping, and dairy agribusiness. Rick and Cyndie have begun a collaboration this year on furthering efforts in the U.S. to increase the population of POI cattle and encourage artisanal A2 dairy production. We look forward to hearing more about their efforts and encourage our readers to look for future dolumns about their progress, as well as other stories from around the world on the subject of A2 milk and POI/Desi Cow species preservation.

The speed at which the A2 milk phenomenon is becoming a global market contender is increasingly a force to be reckoned with. It is no longer a niche market as evidenced by the recent decisions by some of the world’s leading global dairy companies to develop A2 options as a broader dairy category. Recent announcements by world-leader Fonterra of New Zealand to partner with a2 Milk Company (currently holding the world’s leading brand-dominant A2 position), as well as New Zealand’s Synlait and a2 Milk Company’s recent five-year extension of their supply agreement to meet the insatiable demand of A2-derived infant dairy formula (a2 Platinum) in China are just two examples of the growth in this market and trends toward meeting global demand. Other initiatives following suit are Freedom Foods in Australia launching its Australia’s Own Dairy range including A2, Nestle, the leading global dairy company with its ‘Atwo’ brand marketed in China and on a smaller scale, Vietnam’s TH Milk producing its Vinamilk A2 milk products. The A1 verses A2 discussion first gained recognition in the late ‘80s to early ‘90s when scientists studying Type 1 diabetes and heart disease pointed to milk as a possible culprit, in particular a variant of beta casein protein known as A1, found in most conventional dairy products. Two primary protein groups are found in cow’s milk – casein and whey. The beta casein group has two common variants, A1 and A2 beta casein, found in most milks but whose amounts vary

among the different breeds of dairy cattle. The variation between A1 and A2 occurs in the protein’s chain of 209 amino acids. Specifically, A1 has the amino acid histidine at the 67th position in the chain, while A2 has proline in that position. Scientific studies have found that A1 beta casein is digested differently than A2, producing a peptide from beta-casomorphin-7 (BCM-7) which, if released through the intestinal lining into the bloodstream of immunocompromised individuals, may cause inflammatory immune response and other negative health effects. Following the early research on the health implications of A1 vs. A2 milk, one of the scientists, Corran McLachlan, partnered with agribusiness entrepreneur Howard Paterson to found the a2 Milk Company, with the intent to select breed A2 herds and open new markets in Australia and New Zealand of A2 milk products. Initially having created an immediate backlash as consumers became concerned about having been drinking an inferior A1 milk product, a2 Milk Company is steadily working on building global research to support their health claims and has become the largest company in New Zealand, the largest dairy company (even surpassing Fonterra by volume sold), has gained a 12% share of the Australian dairy market and currently sell their products in five countries, including the U.S. where they’ve partnered with Sprouts, Whole Foods, Kroger and Albertson’s. Historically, A2 was the original

variant and the mutation from A2 to A1 occurred in Europe around 8,000 years ago, for reasons still not entirely understood. Some researchers theorize that this is the time when farmers began genetically modifying their cattle in the breeding process for higher yield, favoring the A1-dominant breeds like Holsteins, which are typically known for their output. In India, during the British rule, and before partition, farmers were encouraged to convert their herds to ‘exotic’ breeds such as Jerseys, Holsteins, and Guernseys, with the promise of greater yields. Many did so, from their indigenous Indian breeds such as Gir, Sindhi, and Sahiwal, which are known throughout the world for their milking prowess, as well as their tolerance to high temperatures and tropical diseases. Unfortunately, what was not as well understood when this conversion took place were factors involving specialized feed, veterinarian care, and accommodation (climate-controlled conditions) that these breeds required.

India is the largest consumer of dairy products and has the highest population of cows in the world, however most of these herds are owned by agrarian families, and the costs to keep these breeds of cattle were not anticipated by these poor farmers. Now, India faces the problem of their indigenous cattle breeds becoming nearly extinct. Rick Butler, currently serving as a director and member of the Executive Committee of ABBA, is at the forefront of the few forays into the new frontier of A2 in the United States. He brought the first herd of POI (Pure Origin India is the breeding designation used in Brazil. Also referred to in India as Desi Cows) cows from Mexico into the United States in 2015. He has worked with the University of Illinois on a project to map the genome of the Gir cow. He has worked tirelessly with the Mexican government and cattle organizations there to streamline import of these POI cows into the U.S. and will be importing his second herd into the U.S. in October 2018.

The “steaks” are high to produce healthier foods and Bos indicus cattle may have the advantage! By Sarah Flowers, Heather Hamblen and Dr. Raluca Mateescu - Department of Animal Sciences, University of Florida Flowers and Hamblen are graduate students in the Department of Animal Sciences at University of Florida working on their M.S. degree with Dr. Mateescu. Dr. Mateescu is an Associate Professor of Quantitative Genetics and Genomics. She joined the faculty at Florida in 2014 after serving on the Animal Science faculty at Oklahoma State University for seven years. She received a B.S. degree in Molecular Biology and Genetics from Bucharest University, Romania and received her M.S and Ph.D. in Animal Breeding and Genetics from Cornell University. She recently was awarded a grant from the International Brahman Research Foundation to help finance her work with Brahman cattle. Since most of the cattle herd in Florida are Brahmaninfluenced, Dr. Mateescu’s research centers around Bos indicus animals, focusing on meat quality, meat healthfulness and beef cattle thermotolerance. Look for Dr. Mateescu to present her work entitled, “The Role of Brahman Cattle in Global Protein Production,” at the International Performance Retreat in Floresville, Texas October 19-20.

For years, Bos indicus influenced cattle have received a bad rap for their less-marbled beef product. However, as the push for healthier foods has risen in recent years, this provides opportunity for Bos indicus breeds to market a leaner product that is appealing to healthconscious consumers. Beyond the simple fact that the beef from these cattle breeds is typically leaner, research at the University of Florida shows the fatty acid composition of the marbling is more favorable in terms of nutritional value. The fatty acid composition of meat (muscle and adipose tissue) is important because it contributes to the nutritional value and it affects various aspects of meat quality, including shelf life and flavor. Nutritional value is determined primarily by the ratio between saturated fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids in meat. Low fat diets have been recommended on the premise they would decrease the risk of developing several cardiovascular diseases and, therefore, improve human health. As meat contains a relatively high amount of fat, some people followed the prevailing recommendation and cut down on their meat consumption. It turned out that this simple message is actually wrong. Detailed research carried out in the last decade shows that the total amount of fat in the diet, whether high or low, is not really linked with diseases. What really matters is the type of fat in the diet. What is becoming clearer is that bad fats, meaning trans and some short-length saturated fats, increase the risk for coronary heart disease as well as other diseases, while good fats, meaning mono- and polyunsaturated and longer-length saturated fat, lower this risk. Several factors in beef production affect fatty acid composition, including breed and diet. Breed affects the fat content of meat and fat content itself is a factor determining fatty acid composition. If beef producers could identify cattle that have more beneficial fatty acid profiles, they could enhance the nutritional and health value of beef. Such beef could increase profit to producers because consumers likely would be willing to pay a premium for

beef that consistently has a high nutritional and health value. In addition, this nutritionally enhanced beef would likely increase overall demand for beef and ensure continued growth of the beef industry. Over the last few years, researchers have identified several genes that regulate the fatty acid composition of beef. This, along with the natural variation existing in many breeds of cattle, suggests that fatty acid profiles in beef could be improved through genetic selection. The University of Florida Department of Animal Sciences is currently conducting research on Bos indicus influenced cattle to determine the extent to which genetics influence fatty acid composition and to develop genomic tools for identification of genetically superior animals.

RESEARCH FINDINGS The cattle in this study are part of the University of Florida multi-breed herd of cattle that range from 100% Angus to 100% Brahman. Cattle were classified into six different groups based on their expected Angus and Brahman breed composition. Based on the Angus composition, the grouping was as follows: 1 = 100 to 80%; 2 = 79-65%; 3 = 62.5% (Brangus); 4 = 59 to 40%; 5 = 39 to 20%; 6 = 19 to 0%. When steers reached 1.27 cm of fat thickness over the ribeye, they were transported to a commercial packing plant and harvested using established USDA-FSIS procedures. A steak 2.54 cm thick from the Longissimus dorsi muscle between the 12th and 13th rib was sampled per animal. Steaks were transported to the Meat Science laboratory of the Department of Animal Sciences at University of Florida, vacuum packaged, aged for 14 days from the harvest date at 2°C, and then frozen at -20°C. A thin shaving of each steak trimmed of external fat and connective tissue was powdered and analyzed at Iowa State University for fatty acid and mineral composition. Saturated fatty acids (SFA) are known to have a negative effect on human health, while mono- (MUFA) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) are known to have a positive effect. The â&#x20AC;&#x153;steaksâ&#x20AC;? are high... no significant difference in the amount of monounsaturated fatty acids among the different breed groups (MUFA ranged for 44.2% to 45.8%). A beneficial trend was found in both the saturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids with the SFA declining from 51.3% to 47.5% and the PUFA increasing from 4.3% to 6.9% as the percentage of Brahman increased from 0 to 100% (Figure 1).

towards finding genetic markers that will allow producers to identify and select for animals that will produce beef with higher percentages of polyunsaturated fatty acids and lower percentages of saturated fatty acids. Now more than ever, beef producers are exploring new ways to market their product. Beef with an improved nutritional fatty acid profile creates a product marketable to consumers

who place value on health attributes over high marbling. Rather than Bos indicus influenced cattle taking a hit for those cattle that donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t reach the choice mark, producers should market this leaner product for its favorable attributes. Focusing research and promotion efforts towards nutritional and health benefits of beef could result in a very profitable future for Brahman-influenced cattle producers.

These findings could be great news for producers raising Brahman-influenced cattle as our preliminary data shows they may have an advantage of a healthier fatty acid composition. In this dataset, nutrient profiles of beef were not uniform across cattle, and variation in fatty acid composition is partially attributable to genetic factors. Furthermore, part of this variation can be credited to Brahman percentage, allowing for new opportunities for cattle producers utilizing Bos indicus influenced breeds. This may open the door for producers utilizing Bos indicus breeds to appeal to health-conscious consumers through marketing beef that has a more desirable fatty acid composition. Additionally, researchers will continue working

Marketing Opportunities for F1s by Emily Otto

In this edition of the ABBA F1 Newsletter, I’m going to talk about the different marketing opportunities available to F1 breeders looking to sell pens of cattle across the United States. There is a plethora of well-managed sales held every year as well as online marketing resources available.

consignors that includes important information, like a schedule of events, information on sale requirements, nomination forms, taxes, and more. At this time, producers will need to make the final selections for their pens and ensure the cattle meet all necessary sale requirements.

The “Queen of Cow Country”, the certified F1 Brahman female, is in high demand, but the key to getting top dollar for your quality animal is putting her in front of the right buyers at the right time and having her in good condition.

In the last weeks leading up to the sale, consignors should get their animals in top condition, re-tag them, clean them up and get them ready to haul! Keep in mind that all sales require valid health papers, and if you are going to a sale with a lot of out-of-state buyers, go ahead and get their travel papers/tags.

Consigning to F1 Sales As my dad always told me, “Remember the 5 Ps - Prior planning prevents poor performance.” Figure out what type of pen you want to put together – open heifers, bred heifers, pairs or maybe a 3-n-1 set, and make the right management choices to ensure your cattle are in the right stage of life and condition when the sale takes place. Also, keep in mind that some of the big sales need your nomination forms months in advance and your cattle must be accepted by a sale committee. For example, the 2019 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo All Breeds Sale packet is posted on the Gulf Tex marketing website already and the sale isn’t until the last week of February. If you are a new participant interested in consigning to a sale, be sure to contact each sale’s respective manager to gather information about consignment requirements and time frames. Most sale managers will provide an informational packet to

I can’t recommend enough that consignors get good photos of their lots, and if possible, video. A little advertising can go a long way! Send your photos to the sale manager early so they can use them in the sale book or on their website. Check out last year’s catalog if you can find one and see how much room you have for footnotes. Put together a good, size-appropriate writeup about your cattle. Make an announcement on your ranch’s website and/or Facebook page, post to online cattle groups, call up past clients and buy ads in appropriate publications. Let people know what you have for sale and when they will sell!

Online Options If you don’t want to participate in one of the larger consignment sales, you can choose to post your cattle online for sale by private treaty. The trick is connecting to the right buyer; you need a cattle person to notice your listing amongst the sea of digital media. are cattlerange.com and cattle-exchange.com. Facebook can be a great sales resource too. Technically, it is against their policy to sell animals using the marketplace forums, but most of the time, breeders can still list cattle for sale by private treaty in groups and get good responses. Some of the groups I recommend joining are “F1 Cattle For Sale or Lease”, “Brahman & Brahman Cross Cattle Farmers”, “The Cattlemen’s Connection”, “Brahman Cattle Greys Reds Blacks Forum”, “Cattle And Equipment For Sale”, “SOUTHEASTERN CATTLE OWNERS”, “Hereford Cattle - By Private Treaty ONLY!”, “Angus Cattle Blacks Reds Forum” along with others. This is just a short list. Be sure to search for groups that are connected to your geographic region too. For example, if you live in Texas or nearby, join the “Texas Cattle and farm Equipment For sale” group. Plan on answering lots of private messages (check your message request folder on Facebook too), phone calls and emails. It’s hard to beat a live crowd of ready-to-bid cattlemen with trailers in tow, but if you are tech savvy, you can connect to buyers with zero to minimal commissions and on your time table. Feeding cattle is expensive and not having to wait that extra month or two until the sale might be worth it to your operation. You just need to weigh the pros and cons for your situation.

Happy Fall y’all! My name is Ryan Beany, and I am 18 years old and a junior at the University of Florida studying Animal Sciences. I have been able to call the Brahman Breed “home” for about 10 years now, and trust me, there’s no place like home! Being able to be a member of the American Junior Brahman Association and Florida Junior Brahman Association has truly changed my life. My first year at the All American was definitely not the start I was hoping for; I brought my first Red Brahman bull to show and was ready to compete in every competition possible. When it came time to Weights & Measures, he unfortunately hipped out causing me to not be able to show. But I didn’t let that stop me from enjoying all the other events that year. Being able to watch the show and make new friends that first year helped to shape my Brahman experience and push me to do better in all that I do. Since then, I have been able to make friends to last a lifetime, memories to cherish forever, a family I had no idea was possible, and a story spanning the South Eastern U.S. This past Summer, I was

elected to be the AJBA Vice President. I hope to become even more involved at shows and meetings and inspire others to do the best they can. The agriculture and cattle industry have both influenced my life in unimaginable ways. After graduating in the Spring with my A.A. and High School Diploma, I transferred into the University of Florida’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences to pursue a major in Animal Science with an emphasis in Food Animal and a double minor in both leadership and Agriculture and Natural Resource Law. Following my Bachelor’s Degree, I will go into law school in order to specialize in Private Property and Water Rights in order to defend farmers’ and ranchers’ livelihoods. It is my life’s purpose to better fight for our cattle and agriculture industries while also educating the leaders of tomorrow of the importance of such. I frequently volunteer in classrooms across Florida teaching students of all ages about how important the cattle industry is and that a Brahman is not a camel. I hope everyone’s Fall goes off without a hitch!

CAROL HAWKSLEY Carol Wittekind Hawksley passed away peacefully on August 30, 2018, after suffering a massive stroke. She suffered the stroke at her home in Hiram, TX, and was flown to Baylor Hospital Stroke Center by helicopter. Carol is survived by her husband, Rick Hawksley. Born in Long Beach, CA, Carol graduated from Garland High School in 1964. Then she received a double-major Bachelor’s degree in Geography and European History from Texas State University, now the University of North Texas in Denton, TX. Carol taught in Garland and Mesquite High Schools for eight years before entering the fashion industry in sales management with Sassoon, Gucci and Citizen Watches. Carol met her husband, Rick, during a three day seminar on “Developing One’s Own Way of Thinking” on December 20, 1983. She took the seminar to heart and developed her distinctive and unambiguous way of thinking — decisive! Their courtship is an example. Rick wooed her for seven straight days before they were trapped by an ice storm in Addison for three days. Rick fell in love but Carol, realizing Rick was much more than “an arm piece,” decided they’d marry on New Year’s Eve in 1983, just 10 days after meeting. Work delayed their honeymoon, but Rick got the use of a dealer furnished GMC mini-van and they were off to a camping trip in the Smoky Mountains. The trip was cut short when Carol revealed she was “afraid of heights.” While she may have been height challenged, Carol stood tall in the fashion world. She was always well turned out, taking great care to carefully select a stunning outfit. She was known for deep-ironed creases in her blue jeans, in fact, she ironed everything! When dressed like a “perky poodle,” Carol would enter the room with an emphatic “Ta-da!” She was the master of the dramatic entrance. All by herself, she started the “Home Improvement” real estate craze. Every house they moved into received a top to bottom renovation, and need had nothing to do with the

renovation decision. The house didn’t suite Carol until Carol remade the house. She became particularly adept at painting when she noticed non-uniform brush strokes. “That ain’t happening, I’ll paint it myself!” Besides Rick, Carol loved Schnauzer dogs and Brahman cattle breeding. The Schnauzer population reached 11 on their 50 acre farm home in Hiram (Kaufman County), TX. The veterinarian who treated her dogs introduced her to Brahmans and Carol became a breeder: “that’s how the cow eats cabbage.” Her first heifer, Twiggi, morphed into a show herd including the 2014 Houston Stock Show Grand Champion, Babette. Carol taught herself to be a “real barn burner” in cattle breeding, breed standards and show judging. Carol was an adept golfer. Golf pros admired her “wocka wocka” driving technique. She’d tee-up a bunch of balls, then hit one right after another. While golf pros drive for show, Carol put on a driving show. She scored a hole in one at Cedar Creek Country Club on the 2nd hole using a pink ball and was heard to say “Goody, goody bowwow!” She never played with a pink ball again. Carol cared enormously about people. She’d move heaven, earth and a “thingmabob” to make good things happen. Carol was both courageous and selfless. She was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2013. She endured two complicated surgeries, radiation, many infusions of chemotherapy and five years of near continuous treatment. Rather than complain, she praised her medical team and delivered homemade brownies for office consultations. Carol didn’t feel good, but she worked hard to make everyone around her feel good. Carol shrugged off the life threatening nature of her disease. “I’ve got things to do and doing nothing ain’t gonna happen.” While we mourn her passing, we celebrate her life. She was a confident, determined and successful Texas woman whose life is worthy of emulation. Donations can be made in her memory to the LUNGevity Foundation to support lung cancer research.

NANCY MAY LENGYEL Nancy Lengyel passed away on September 8, 2018. Nancy was the mother of Brahman Journal editor Victoria Lambert and the “Office Mom” to many TBJ staff members over the years. EVP SEARCH UPDATE

Ashley Hughes has been nominated by the Executive Committee of the American Brahman Breeders Association (ABBA) as a potential candidate for the position of Executive Vice President. “I’m pleased to announce that the Executive Committee has selected a candidate to present to the Board of Directors for Executive Vice President,” ABBA President George Kempfer said. “After interviewing five outstanding candidates, we chose Miss Ashley Hughes. She was selected as we felt she has the knowledge, work ethic and skill set to help ABBA move forward.” Hughes is highly experienced in association leadership and management having worked for the Florida Cattlemen’s Association, Florida Beef Council, Georgia Cattlemen’s Association and Georgia Beef Board. Currently, Hughes handles the operations management for a feedlot / preconditioning yard in Florida. Hughes has received numerous awards and recognitions for her contributions to the beef cattle industry, including the University of Florida College of Agricultural and Life Sciences Horizon Award for Outstanding Young Alumni. Hughes will be interviewed by the ABBA Board of Directors during the meetings in Floresville, Texas on October 19.

Lindsey Wilder, Named National FFA Finalist The National FFA Organization announced that Lindsey Wilder from Williston, FL was selected as a national finalist for the National FFA Proficiency Award in Beef ProductionEntrepreneurship. Wilder is one of only four people chosen to compete for this award at the national finals to be held at the 91st National FFA Convention & Expo in Indianapolis this fall. The proficiency awards recognize outstanding student achievement in agribusiness gained through establishment of a new business, working for an existing company or otherwise gaining hands-on career experience. Wilder, a member of the Williston Sr FFA Chapter, became eligible for the national award after winning the Florida state FFA competition earlier this year. In recognition of being a finalist, each of the four finalists will receive a plaque and $500. The national winner of the Beef Production will receive an additional $500 during a special ceremony at the National FFA Convention & Expo.
