Introducing
POLLED ICEMAN Photo at 10 months of age
We are a small breeder in South Texas that love Brahman cattle and enjoy dealing with the many people that have the same admiration for these cattle that we do. We believe in raising the best we can produce and have strived to develop a progressive POLLED herd built around great pedigrees. We want to THANK all of our buyers from day one and invite all Brahman enthusiasts to visit 4F Cattle Co. if you are ever in South Texas. Mr. 4F Polled Iceman is a DOUBLE SMOOTH POLLED son of LMC Polled Sambo and LMC LF Polled Elma who we sold for $18,000 to England Cattle Co., Hondo Martinez and K Bar K Cattle Co.. We love the muscle, correctness, moderation, length, breed character and early puberty that this bull offers.

Neogen GeneSeek Operations processes over 2 million DNA samples per year and has highly automated facilities to manage that volume, as well as deep investment in experts, tools and technologies that make DNA testing for cattle producers accurate, affordable and reliable. Extraction Lab Manager Niraj Patel lead the group’s tour of the 33,000 sq ft Neogen facility. The assembly met with members of the company’s staff, including Dr. Stewart Bauck – Vice President of Agrigenomics; Dr. JR Tait – Director of Genetics Product Development; Trina Blankenship – Customer Support and Sample Reception Manager; Tom Schultz – Director of Sales and Marketing; Jamie Bishop – Marketing Consultant; Stephanie Schuler – Customer Support Representative; and Jill Ginn – the Texas Territory Manager and point of contact for ABBA members. ABBA delegates were excited to hear about the new technology and applications being pioneered at the Neogen GeneSeek lab. In the past, most Brahman DNA parentage tests have only utilized Short Tandem Repeat (STR) technology, but Neogen GeneSeek is utilizing both STR and Single-Nucleotide Polymorphism testing (SNP, often referred to as a snip).

SNP-based tests are often faster, have higher accuracy than the older STR tests and deliver more information. For example, SNP-based platforms allow for parentage, genomic profiling, screening for defects and other genetic conditions, all in one step. Under STR methods, each of those pieces of information would have needed a separate test process. Therefore, when purchasing a combination of DNA tests, SNP-based tests also are more affordable. Dr. Bauck led the group through a thorough discussion of how parentage testing works, ideas for transition from STR parentage to SNP-based platforms and illustrated examples of success working through this process. The group had many questions in the highly interactive session. Neogen GeneSeek is also offering a revolutionary new method for collecting DNA samples, which is faster, easier and cleaner for producers collecting DNA at chute side. This new method utilizes an Allflex tissue sampling unit applicator, which is similar to a standard ear tag gun. A breeder simply loads a vial, known as a TSU punch, into the applicator gun. The gun is then placed over the center of an animal’s ear, approximately 1 inch from the edge, taking care to avoid any obvious veins and ridges. When the applicator gun’s handles are squeezed together, it cuts a small tissue sample from the ear and deposits it directly into the TSU punch vial. (See: http://allflexusa.com/videos-2/.) The TSU vials should then be mailed to the lab in Nebraska along with necessary form, which you can request directly from the ABBA’s Houston office or download from the ABBA’s website CONTINUED ON PAGE 22

Neogen GeneSeek uses a robot to uncap the sample, extracts DNA for testing, recaps the vial and keeps the tissue sample on file for future use. The process is simple and requires less fuss than the standard hair and blood cards, which also are more subject to potential cross contamination than TSUs and generally less convenient for producers. It also allows breeders to keep samples on file to be used if new tests become available down the line. In addition to these technological advances, Neogen is working to develop new, Bos indicus-specific DNA technology, which will be unveiled in the future. Breeders interested in learning more about Neogen GeneSeek technology can contact the ABBA’s account representative Jill Ginn at JGinn@neogen.com.

WEIGHT & MEASUREMENT PARAMETERS/RULES FOR THE 2017 NATIONAL BRAHMAN SHOW
26
In an effort to improve the uniformity of the showring, the ABBA Show Committee approved the Weight and Measurement Parameters for the 2017 National Brahman Show to be held in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. The weight and measurement parameters were derived by a Weighing and Measuring Sub-Committee who reviewed weights and measures from previous International, National and All American Shows. The parameters were then reviewed by the entire Show Committee and the Board of Directors, and the feeling was that the parameters were quite liberal but would effectively eliminate those cattle that are too large or too small to conform to today’s industry standards. The Show Committee will continue to monitor the weights and hip heights at the conclusion of each show and has the option to adjust these as needed. The following are the rules associated with the weight and measurement program: 1. Cattle at the 2017 National Show will be weighed on Tuesday, October 3.
2. All animals in the Calf and Intermediate Divisions must meet the weight and measurement parameters at the National Brahman Show. 3. Any animal that exceeds the weight and measurement parameters at the National, International or any other show that has official weights and measures will be ineligible for that show and any other approved ABBA shows until the next show that weights and measures are taken when they can requalify. If an animal who weighs or measures out and shows before requalifying that animal will be disqualified for the remainder of their show career 4. Any animal that does not meet the weight or measurement parameter must be re-weighed or re-measured immediately after coming off the scale only one time at the scale previously weighed/measured on for qualification. 5. The hip height measurement will be taken directly over the hook bone.

PASSAGES
Rest in Peace
JAMES MELVIN CLEM
“Jimmy”
James Melvin “Jimmy” Clem, age 84, of Texarkana, Texas, passed peacefully from this life at his home on Saturday, July 22, 2017. He was born December 13, 1932 in Redwater, Texas, and was a lifetime resident of Texarkana. Jimmy was a man of many talents – a road builder, a rancher and an actor. A graduate of the Texas Tech University, Clem built a successful road construction business that spanned several states. According to an old Brahman Journal article, Jimmy said, “Road construction enabled me to get started in the second business of breeding Red Brahman cattle.” Jimmy started his herd in 1972 and rapidly developed a 900-acre ranch Northwest of Texarkana into a beef breeding establishment. He utilized top quality, imported Indu Brazil bulls in his herd and was known around the world for his first-class Bos indicus cattle. Jimmy was a notable presence at six feet three inches and 300 pounds with a thick red beard. He started in movies as a hobby. “It was a chance to take a break from the day to day routine,” Jimmy said. He got his acting break through a movie producer friend from Texarkana, Charles Pierce. From there, it catapulted in to bigger parts with the most notable being “The Town that Dreaded Sundown.” In addition to all these things,

Jimmy was a veteran of the United States Air Force, having served his country proudly in the Korean War. He was a member of the Screen Actors Guild, a lifetime member of the American Brahman Breeders Association and the National Cattleman’s Association. His biggest accomplishment in life was his family. He loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them. He was a devoted and proud father, grandfather and great grandfather. Jimmy lived life to the fullest and was a connoisseur of many of life’s pleasures. Jimmy was preceded in death by his parents, Eric Melvin Clem and Mary Florence Clem, his two wives, Mary Catherine “Kitty” Clem and Eddie Lou Slider Clem, two sisters, Mary Dell Clem Parker and Jerry Clem. He is survived by his two sons and daughters-in-law: Burt and Jan Clem of Simms, Texas; Sam and Telka Clem of Texarkana, Texas; one sister: Cean Clem Bonner of Genoa, Arkansas; two stepdaughters: Kathy Constantine of Leary, Texas; Donna Welch of Dallas, Texas; one stepson: Bo Slider of Leary, Texas; one brother-in-law Mark Parker of the Wamba Community; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and a host of friends. Bunce named ABBA Exec. Vice President The American Brahman Breeders Association recently announced that William (Bill) Bunce will be taking on the role of Executive Vice President this fall.
sweetheart, Lydia. They have two grown children, a daughter, Jody and a son, Joe.
When asked how he felt about taking the new position, Bunce said, “It is exciting, and I’m looking forward to it very much. There is of course, always some nervous energy about the unknowns, but George Kempfer and the Executive Committee have been very forthcoming, which helps to build a strong relational foundation. One thing is for certain - the combination of good cattle along with good people, acting with good intent, will lead to good results.”
“I’d like to think that both experience and dedication are strengths I bring to this association… and hopefully some insight,” Bunce said. “I’d also hope that the membership will come to find me as approachable and open to new ideas.”
Bunce graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1978 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Husbandry. He has nearly 30 years of experience in the livestock industry, including managing state ag agencies, running large-scale agricultural operations, being the Vice President of the Polled Hereford Association as well as other managerial positions in the ag world.
Bunce expressed excitement at the opportunity to help foster growth in the association.
Most recently, Bunce served as the Executive Director of the Nebraska Brand Committee, where he directed the state livestock and law enforcement agency and lead the implementation and transition of all operations and programs, including budget oversight, policies, legislation/statutes, personnel, law enforcement and interagency relationships. Bunce tendered his resignation at the end of August and will be moving to Texas late this fall with his wife and high school

“Whether on the programmatic level, or individual level, it is exciting to help people capture market share,” Bunce said. “For example, each international sale, can and should lead to new and expanded markets in the expanding global arena. One thing builds upon another. It can be hard to quantify in the near term, but in retrospect, seeing increased exports over time, can only be attributable to hard work and effort. The same thing is true domestically. Alongside increasing the marketplace for quality genetics, it is always a joy to watch participants of the Junior Program(s) achieve their educational and career goals, and I look forward to that very much.”

| THE BRAHMAN JOURNAL
My good friend, Jimmy Clem, died at his home in Texarkana last month. He was 84 and by all accounts lived not only a full but a fulfilling life. Jimmy and I met years ago through our shared love for Brahman cattle but quickly realized that with his north east Texas roots and my north Louisiana background we had a much wider expanse of common ground. This allowed our relationship to grow to the point that for the last several years I addressed him as “Uncle” and he simply called me “Nephew.” In fact, lately, if I hadn’t talked to him for a few days I would often find a message on my phone that said, “A nephew calls his uncle!” What I would like to attempt here is to share a little of what I knew to be the deeper individual behind that gruff exterior that so many only knew as the road contractor, rancher and movie star. His Brahman cattle are a perfect example. I doubt if any of today’s Brahman breeders realize that Jimmy was a lifetime member of ABBA. And I know that his U.S. contemporaries didn’t appreciate his degree of genius as a breeder because his cattle always sold foreign. I would say that most, if not all, bought into the loud, expansive, largest of the larger than life crowd persona that was first and foremost his public image. Looks and size helped shape this. Jimmy stood well in excess of six foot and topped the scales at close to 300 lbs. With his
flaming red hair and a full beard he looked and often acted every bit the part of an old time mountain man that he played in many of his movie roles. However, during the swirl of innuendo and hyperbole that surrounded the Red Brahman breed and its corresponding importations during the late seventies and through the eighties, when everyone was seeking to create the perfect individual by crossing the Indu-Brazil with the Gyr, Jimmy, alone, accomplished just that. What no one in the U.S. realized was that he had an unequaled ability to “see” beyond a sire and dam and match them to create that perfect individual. As a result he developed an extensive international market and sold ABBA registered cattle to Thailand, South Africa and Central and South America. In other circles, Jimmy was well known for building a multi-state road construction business from the ground up and as a movie star. But what he held dear to his heart was his family and friends. He shared his gentle side with them and could often be generous to a fault. He loved to cook for all and many shared expansive meals created in his state-ofthe-art kitchen out of his well-tended, full garden. Jimmy was a Texas Tech graduate and staunch patriot. He proudly served the U.S. during the Korean War as member of the U.S. Air Force. Above all, he was one of my closest and dearest friends. br ahmanjournal . com

Bluebonnet Kick-Off CARCASS Classic Show AND F-1
& Hands-on Showmanship Tips Clinic! The second largest Brahman show in the United States, the Bluebonnet KickOff Classic, was held August 3-5, 2017 at the Washington County Fairgrounds in Brenham, Texas. In addition to the show, Bulls Eye Ranch, in conjunction with the Bluebonnet Brahman Association, hosted a hands-on showmanship clinic on August 3. The clinic was designed
with the novice exhibitor in mind and aimed to teach exhibitors tips and suggestions to best present their cattle in front of the judges.
There was a hamburger lunch sponsored by the Bluebonnet Brahman Association at noon with the clinic at 2 p.m., followed by a showmanship class where clinic participants were judged on how they presented their cattle.

AMERICAN JUNIOR BRAHMAN ASSOC. Hey Guys!
I’m Shae’ Doucet, your 2017-2018 AJBA President and The Brahman Foundation Intern from Southeast Texas. I have been involved with Brahman Cattle my entire life and wouldn’t trade it for the world. Now being a year out of high school I can look back on my Junior Show career and truly say this organization has set a strong foundation while opening a world of opportunities and guiding me into my future! I am currently a Pre-Veterinary major at McNeese State University in Southwest Louisiana. My dream is to practice as a large animal veterinarian specializing in ruminate animals, while growing my purebred Brahman and F-1 cattle herd to a respectable quality and continuing that growth to be a fully functioning business.
The experiences the AJBA organization has given to me are irreplacable, but I am going to give my all and show my gratitude to this wonderful organization this year. My team has many goals for the upcoming year including improving the relationship between the AJBA and ABBA, as well as shedding light on our supporters! The AJBA and I would not be where it is today without the support of those that believe in us and our futures; your impact is unmeasurable! We also hope to create a more enjoyable and camaraderie-like atmosphere, while encouraging a heavier participation at the All American. We are going to create a transparent and honest light of our intentions. We have also made AJBA information more available to the public. You can now visit brahman. org and under the AJBA tab, view the minutes of any AJBA Board Meeting. To all AJBA members, do not hesitate to contact myself or any of the directors throughout the year. We all have a strong passion for this organization and for helping you reach your full potential! To all past AJBA members and current ABBA members, reach out to juniors in your area as a mentor and guide, you never know the impact you can make on a junior by encouraging them! LOVE YOU GUYS!
Shae’ Doucet
Howdy Ya’ll!
My name is Kayla Mason, I am 17 years old and will be a senior at Gonzales High School. I am the daughter of David and Leanne Mason. I have an older sister, Morgan, and a younger brother, Matthew. I am from Gonzales, Texas which is known most famous for the phrase “Come and Take It”. I am involved in the FFA, 4H, AJBA, TJBA, Future Scientists and the National Honor Society. As well as being an AJBA director, I am also starting my fourth year as a director for the Texas Junior Brahman Association. I enjoyed every aspect of being on the board of directors – planning activities, organizing events and working the ring at shows. My family has owned and operated a small commercial cattle operation for 20 years, which consists of Hereford cows and Brahman bulls, and now, we have a small herd of registered Brahman cattle. Along with maintaining this small operation, we raise chickens for Tyson Foods, Inc. We have 12 houses in production. I started showing Brahman cattle when I was 11 years old and I’ve been hooked ever since. I have just returned home from attending the Leadership Camp sponsored by the AJBA and The
Brahman Foundation that was held at Mississippi State University. This was a busy two days but loaded with valuable information, awesome ranch tours and I have made lifelong memories. I’m very humbled and thankful for the opportunity to be a part of such a wonderful association. I encourage all juniors to become members of the AJBA as there are countless opportunities available. I look forward to seeing y’all down the road! Thanks and God Bless!
Kayla Mason

EXPICA Nicaragua COLUMN BY ALBERTO BANUET
The author, Alberto Banuet, 62, studied veterinary medicine at the National University of Mexico, and has written for many Latin American publications, including: Diario Novedades, Diario Milenio, Diario El Universal, Revista Ganadero and Revista Rural MX. He is the father of five children and grandfather to seven. He served as Federal commissioner of Agriculture in the State of Yucatan, Secretary of Agriculture in the State of Tabasco, and Director General of Agriculture and Livestock Health Department SARH. He breeds Red Brahman cattle as well as Australian Shepherds and Katahdin sheep.
What a beautiful country! Green from start to finish, water, good soil, maybe a little hot for some, but fantastic for growing coffee, tobacco, coconuts, corn, sugar cane that converts into good rum, rice and a lot of cattle - over 7 million head in a country with 6 million souls of diverse ethnic origin! Nicaragua is the biggest country in Central America, and Managua, the capital, is the largest city around, nestled right next to Momotombo and Momotombito, two volcanoes that occasionally remind Nicaraguans they live in a fiery seismic area and should always be alert. The Brahman Journal was there for EXPICA, a show that brings together cattlemen from Guatemala, Costa Rica, Honduras, El Salvador, Panama and Nicaragua. They have two versions of it, what they call permanent EXPICA, always taking place in Nicaragua, and one that moves around the participating countries. People here have the right idea and a fantastic business deal going on. It was not an easy task to get all these contrasting government officials on the same ship, but somehow, they managed it and boy are they happy! They consolidated a vast economic area, putting aside their political and ethnic issues, and concentrated on the cattle business, something that would sound logical for countries participating in NAFTA, but… please feel free to fill in the blank. With more than 700 entries from different breeds, the Brahman show is the main event. They judge them in a large multi-purpose arena that congregates families from all over Central America, wearing their best western apparel acquired during the Houston Rodeo specially for this day. The Brahman cattle, both red and gray, looked extremely good even though some had huge brands that honestly are not appealing anymore. It’s a little bit too much in my opinion; they really mess up CONTINUED ON PAGE 66

the hides… you will see pictures of them in this issue. The people are, like in all the hot Latin American countries, tremendously nice. Everybody is happy, having fun, eating and drinking with good Flor de caña rum that they are very, very proud of and for good, tasty reasons. Safety is always a concern when traveling to countries that the media and fake news want to make us believe are in turmoil… that sounded real presidential. So I asked around. The best and most accurate news always comes by the way of cab drivers. There is no violence they told me. There are very few robberies even though they had a gun store at the show and apparently anyone can own one - the way it should be. The population seems to be happy with their status quo, and something amazing is that the country is full of young Americans having the time of their life. I was wondering why until I asked a couple of beautiful young ladies from California that had great tans, and it so happens that some of the best waves in the world for surfing are in the Pacific ocean in Nicaragua so American surfers are taking advantage of them, together with the exchange rate and very cheap cost of living. Prices for registered bulls are very good. You could say it’s a Costa Rican hunting ground, because they basically sell all their bulls, of all breeds, in Nicaragua, and there is a reason for that. A Mexican company called SuKarne invested $115 million in a state-of-the-art packing plant for 180,000 head per year, feed lots and feed processing plant. They employ hundreds of people and are targeting the US, Mexico, Russia (or Rusha as Mr. Trump pronounces it) and European Union markets, apparently with very good results. On the other hand, they are pressuring cattlemen to invest in good genetics if they want better prices for their calves. So, in a nutshell, Nicaragua is very interesting and a must visit place for progressive American and Mexican breeders of solid genetics. If you don’t want to keep losing ground to Brazilian and Colombian bloodlines, judges, and most of all, letting the locals lose perspective of what the cow business is all about. With all the sanitary issues going on in those countries, now seems like a good time to visit. EXPICA is a great show! Oscar Sobalvarro and Juan Francisco Flores do a fantastic job hosting over 100 cattlemen that bring goats, lambs, hogs and cattle to the largest show in this part of the world. I am sure they will be really happy to see you there next year, and if you do go, don’t forget to eat at Casa de los Noguera at Carl Lambert´s suggestion – this man knows his beef!
