Publisher’s Letter

Dear Golf Amigos, Winter storms and snow drifts make my job easy…Cold calls from the northern states and Canada cause for a melt down in our office helping folks get to where it is warm and sunny…so that they can play GOLF in MEXICO . There is a lot’s of golf action in Mexico in store for 2014…Los Cabos will have three new courses open, The first will be the Tom Fazio course at private resort, Chileno Bay start date is the first of the year allowing local residence and visitors to play this outstanding course. Quivira will open in the spring a new Jack Nicklaus Signature design that will have awesome views and lots of elevation changes. One hole is reminiscent of the artistic calendars where the hole seems to hang on for dear life...it will be talked about and photographed by all players. Sometime before the end of the year Tiger Wood’s new course will open at Diamante to accommodate the growing membership brought on by the success of the Davis Love course opened several years ago.

Best’s Golf Guide to Mexico the lifestyle and golf courses are meant to be enjoyed in Mexico this winter season. Life just got easier. I have traveled in Mexico for over 30 years, flying in and out of many of the great cities and areas on and off the beaten path….I like to say I have driven more miles than a Mexican truck driver as well. I have never been in harms way, not even a slightest hint of problem or lack of security I find the people of Mexico to be warm and friendly, always eager to help and lend a hand.

Puerto Cancun has been slowing opening its doors to golfers and now with the addition of golf professional Francisco Salazar they are ready to welcome players on this beautiful lagoon side Tom Weiskopf design.

G

uests of Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita can enjoy a “twin” golf course experience without ever leaving the vicinity of this exclusive resort community. Two Jack Nicklaus Signature courses, with their own distinctive layouts, challenge golfers to 36 holes of unforgettable golf. The pair of par-72 courses comprising the Punta Mita Club de Golf enjoy an enviable setting along the green and serene landscapes of Riviera Nayarit. The top-rated Pacifico Golf Course, which opened in 1999, boasts the world’s only natural island green, hole #3b, nicknamed “Tail of the Whale” for its natural shape. At low tide, a submerged stone path to the green becomes passable and at high tide, an amphibious golf cart is available. Seven holes border the Pacific Ocean or Banderas Bay, and offer views of humpback whales during seasonal migration from December to April. The Bahia Golf Course, launched in 2009, is a contrast in design to its sister course and provides new twists and turns. Players put their short game to the test on the course’s undulating fairways and greens. There are five stunning holes that play along the Pacific Ocean plus two with ocean views. One of the many scenic holes is nestled on the beach just steps from Punta Mita’s famed El Faro surf spot. Jack Nicklaus named hole #17 his favorite because he loves short par 4s and the hole’s ocean view. This 378-yard hole is a short dogleg left that follows the contour of a cove and reqiuires a carry over rocks and sand to a small waterfront green. “You would be hard pressed to ask for a more beautiful backdrop for a golf course than Punta Mita,” said industry legend Jack Nicklaus. “To be given spectacular oceanfront

land as a canvas not once, but twice, it’s exciting for a designer and it reflects a commitment from the Club to provide a memorable golf experience.” After winding up on the golf course, players can unwind at the Resort with myriad activities from a full-service spa and watersports center to two beaches and three pools. Four restaurants aim to please diverse palate and culinary learning experiences with cooking classes to the fresh “Catch of the Day” program. A fitness center, jogging trails, yoga classes, a private yatch for rental and a complimentary Kids’ Club are among the amenities. The on-site Cultural center offers visitors a glimpse into the rich heritage and natural wonders of Punta Mita. The center offers complimentary art tours, nature hikes, Tequila tastings, Spanish classes, watercolor lessons, Mexican gastronomy lectures, stargazing nights, and more. With this well-rounded travel and golf packaged experience, the guests of Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita have even more of an incentive to stay and play.

PLAY IT TO ENJOY IT

2014 MEXICO, LIVE IT TO BELIEVE IT... PLAY IT TO ENJOY IT Mexico has a rich history of golf dating back to the 1890’s when some of the British Communities in the mining city of Pachuca, Hidalgo determined that all that was missing in Mexico was a golf course, hence a thirteen hole dirt golf course was created with greens made of sand and burnt oil. They called it the Pachuca Country Club. Mexico's 223 golf courses sport a variety of features including aqua blue waters accenting spectacular beaches, plush green paspalum grass, and fairways. In jungle settings and historic colonial towns, visit the best courses of Mexico - built by world class top designers like, Nicklaus, Player, Norman, Doak, von Hagge, Love III and Trent Jones II. With over 700,000 golfers traveling to Mexico each year, Mexico remains the #1 International Golf Destination for US Golfers. WHAT CELEBRITIES ARE SAYING Hollywood movie stars and recording artists have long had a love affair with Mexico. From the early days of film in Acapulco, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton romping in Puerto Vallarta, Bing Crosby, John Wayne and Desk Arnez were all fans the Baja and the Jet Set times at Las Hadas and the famous white party. These days, Cancun and Los Cabos head the list of locations where celebrities head for a weekend getaway to visit and play world class golf in Mexico or Fish for Marlins. The top rated One and Only Palmilla and the swank Esperanza resort shield the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow & Chris Martin. Will Smith & Jada Pinkett-Smith or supermodel Cindy Crawford frequent Mexico’s golden sand beaches and private homes and Uber resorts. The same places that you can visit and expect the same treatment. Tiger Wood’s love for Mexico is legendary, as he has won multiple Majors in the US and then headed directly to Cancun or Los Cabos to savor his victories. He will spend more time now as he puts final touches to his new golf course at Diamante in Los Cabos. In the mean time, the most influential celebrity in the world of golf for the last decade, Jack Nicklaus has claimed Mexico as an expanding canvas for his world wide acclaimed

golf course designs with a scattering of 26 top rated golf courses throughout the entire county. Lorena Ochoa is the goodwill ambassador of Mexico with her charm and grace. Sammy Hager has made a home in Los Cabos with his Cabo Wabo. Oscar de la Hoya loves golf and fishing and can’t get enough of Mexico. Two time winner in 2013 on the PGA Champions tour Estaban Toledo is a spokesperson for the Los Cabos Tourism Board. Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park offers more star sightings and celebrity encounters of the aquatic kind than Hollywood can shake at Oscar. So grab your camera and head off the beaten path, where Cabo Pulmo rolls out the blue carpet for ocean fanatics everywhere. Costa Careyes has long been the hideaway for the rich and famous from the days of Robin Leach. Bill Gates likes Punta Mita and the Four Seasons so much that he bought the place. Mexico has a grand history of stars and celebrities from the early film days. Come live the grand life as well…the red carpet is out, your special table for two is reserved by candle light. Join the many celebrity and Pro Am tournament events, or special concerts with top headliners, culture and music for all ages. The TIME to GO! Is NOW.

An interview with

Esteban Toledo

Chuck Kinder, Publisher of Golf Guide to Mexico interviews 2013 Insperity Championship winner, Esteban Toledo.

Esteban Toledo... is a Mexican professional golfer, who was a member of the PGA Tour in 1994 and 1998–2004 and has spent many years playing on the second tier Nationwide Tour. At present, he competes on the Champions Tour. His sole victory on the Nationwide Tour came at the 2005 Lake Erie Charity Classic at Peek ‘n Peak Resort. He also won the 2000 Mexican Open. He represented Mexico in the World Cup in 1992, 1994, 1995, 1998, 2002 and 2006. In May 2013, Toledo became the first Mexican to win on the Champions Tour, winning the Insperity Championship in a playoff followed by a victory in Canada at the 2013 Montreal Championship. Toledo’s life and career is the subject of the book, Tin Cup Dreams by Michael D’Antonio. http://www.estebantoledofamilyfoundation.org/

CK: Today we are with Esteban Toledo, PGA Champion Tour Player from Mexicali, Mexico. Estaban, you’re 50 years old and you are the only Mexican player on the PGA Tour. How did it make you feel to be a Mexican winner? ET: Well it was great because it happened on Cinco de Mayo and it was beautiful to be out there with all of the fans on the last hole. My family was there, my daughter was there, my supporters

Championship Tournament in Woodlands, Texas 2013. What was your thought process? ET: It felt great because I practiced for so long and I have dedicated my time to my family, to my fans and to the game of golf. All the dedication I put in so many hours, months and years. It finally paid off with my first win on the Champion Tour.

who had just died, that I dedicated my win to him and to the guy who brought me to the United States, John Minnis who lived in San Jose. I promised that I was going to win before the end of the year, and so I dedicated this win to both of them. CK: You could see this victory coming. You played earlier at the Liberty Mutual event with Mark O’Meara and came in 4th. He says you are a work horse and was very happy to team up with you. The week before, you were in the lead on Sunday and

like I was close. I learn from my mistakes. I don’t learn when I win. I was playing really well at the time and then I went down to the Legends and teamed up with Mark O’Meara. It was an honor to play with him, and I really learned from him, a guy who has won majors and tournaments around the world. He really helped me get better and he said that I was going to win very soon. So when I went to The Woodlands, I was mentally and physically ready to win.

CK: In your early days you found a way to make a living as a boxer with an impressive record of 12-1. Did you have a boxer that you idolized in those days?

CK: What a year you are having. You have been playing professional golf on the PGA tour for 27 years. You have over $5 million in tour winning, and your first of two wins on the Champion Tour at the Insperity 54 Best’s Golf Guide to Mexico

CK: After the win you dropped to you knees and then you were surrounded by your wife and family…hugs and kisses and a Mexican Sombrero! What was that moment like? ET: First of all, I want to tell my fans that the reason I went on my knees was that I made a promised to my brother,

ended up in 7th. One could tell you were ready to win. Tell us how these experiences prepared you for the Insperity Championship. ET: In the event in Atlanta at Sugarloaf I played with, listened to and watched Bernhard Langer. I had a wonderful experience to take the lead for 5 holes and complete all the way on the back nine. I didn’t win, but I felt www.golfinmexico.net

congratulate you on your victory as the Golf and Sports Ambassador of Los Cabos. You display the Los Cabos logo on your visor and bag. What is your roll and plan as the Golf and Sports Ambassador of Los Cabos? ET: It was a pleasure to speak to Ruben and sign with Los Cabos. Through the help of my manager, Arturo Cervantes, we were looking for a Mexican sponsorship and it was perfect timing to be able to help promote Los Cabos on TV and through my interviews along with personal appearances. CK: I love Los Cabos. In your opinion, what makes Los Cabos such a very special Golf and Lifestyle destination?

CK: You have come a long way from a very humble beginning in Mexicali in a three room house with nine brothers and sisters. What thoughts do you have reflecting back on those days that gave you the will to over come a lot of disadvantages and make you the person you are today? ET: I had a very humble life in my early years. The most important thing was that I had friends that gave me advise that I had to believe in myself. So I prepared my self and I worked hard to be stronger. I prepared my self every single week.

through twitter, facebook, Television. They gave me inspiration and that is the reason I won for them.

Without John Minnis, who died ten years ago, and his wife Rita, I would not be here today. He was playing golf when we met. They both believed in me, and they knew I was going to play good golf some day. At the time I didn’t know I had the talent, but he believed in me. He always believed

ET: You know what...in Mexico, Julio Caesar Chavez was the one I always followed, but I believed that the very best boxer in the whole world was Mohammad Ali. I saw him at Tyson’s last fight in the DC area and I had the opportunity to speak with Mohammad. He didn’t know who I was, but it was the most incredible experience talking to the MAN who knew how to Box! CK: You made an incredible transition from your home town in Mexico to the US…how did that happen? ET: Well, I met a man who changed my life. www.best4mexicoteetimes.com

I could and he gave me the opportunity. He was certain that I could compete on the PGA Tour, so without him and his faith in me, I wouldn’t have the success and be the winner I am today. CK: You have a passion to help kids with your foundation, you always have had a goal and a dream. What is it? ET: It’s not about me and it’s not about anyone else. It’s about the children, because I have been there before. I experienced the poor life these kids are having, except I had a family. I had a father, mother, but these kids, some don’t have anything. For me to be able to share with them my feelings and my money, is the most enjoyable experience to share and help these kids, because they need love. CK: Ruben Reachi, the Secretary of Tourism of Baja California Sur was one of the first to tweet you and

ET: Los Cabos has the best golf courses in Mexico, wonderful beaches to enjoy and the food is fantastic. We have great restaurants. Los Cabos is safe and secure has a lot of daily flights. Los Cabos is the number one golf destination in Mexico for US and Canadian golfers.

CK: Estaban, what would you be doing if you weren’t on the PGA tour today? ET: Teaching kids to believe in themselves, and I would like to be the President of the PGA of Mexico, and promote the golf courses in Mexico and also work on getting more Mexican players on the PGA Tour. CK: Esteban…you are a rising star at the young age of 50. We wish you continued success in golf and your life. ET: I am going to work very hard to continue my career. I want to be my self. I’m Estaban Toledo. I am the guy who plays golf. I want to do good inside and outside the golf course, and the most important thing is that I love my family and fans... and for all the kids in this world prepare yourself...be good and behave.
