¡Bienvenidos a Los Cabos! Los Cabos has a lot to brag about. Located at the sun-drenched terminus of the Baja Peninsula where the SEA OF CORTEZ meets the mighty Pacific Ocean at the iconic stone arch of LAND’S END, Los Cabos is a land of striking natural beauty. Visitors will find stunning beaches, enchanting desert landscapes, vibrant marine life, sunny weather and sparkling seas. In addition, the region’s legendary fishing, nightlife, gourmet dining, activities and luxurious accommodations make this one of the world’s top vacation spots. While sophisticated new developments give Los Cabos a cosmopolitan feel, the area has a rich and COLORFUL HISTORY. Originally home to the indigenous Pericú peoples, Los Cabos later saw the arrival of Spanish conquistadors, missionaries, pirates

and explorers. In the mid-twentieth century, southern Baja became a favorite escape of HOLLYWOOD STARS like Bing Crosby, Desi Arnaz and John Wayne who came down to take advantage of the outstanding fishing. During this period, the area was home to sleepy fishing villages and was accessible only to travelers who could afford a private plane or a yacht. In the latter half of the twentieth century, the creation of a highway system and the onset of international flights initiated a boom in travel. Today, Los Cabos hosts over a million visitors annually and is FAMED FOR ITS

Between Cabo San Lucas and historic San José del Cabo is the TOURIST CORRIDor where you can find amazing beaches like Chileno and Santa Maria Bays— both outstanding spots for SNORKELING. Some of the world’s most luxurious resorts are located along this stretch of coastline. In historic SAN JOSÉ DEL CABO, charming architecture, romantic restaurants and a Thursday evening Art Walk (November-May) make this lovely town a favorite for strolling. Just outside of San José del Cabo, PUERTO LOS CABOS is a rising star, with world class golf, inviting beaches, a new marina, luxury villas and stunning hotels. A yacht charter is a great way to take in the sights in Los Cabos

Fishing & Yacht Charters With a reputation for incredible fishing, Los Cabos has earned its nickname as the “Marlin Capital of the World.” Well before the region became today’s luxury vacation retreat, fishermen in the know headed down to Baja to catch enormous fish in the area’s amazingly rich waters. It’s no wonder that annual

tournaments draw international competitors in search of prize catches. Depending on the season and water conditions, anglers may encounter various species of marlin (striped, black and blue), dorado (mahi-mahi), tuna, wahoo, roosterfish, sea bass and others. We work with the expert team at Pisces Sportfishing, known the world over for their outstanding captains, boats and crews. Looking to get out on the water with a touch of luxury? Our

private yacht charters offer an unforgettable experience, whether you’re looking for a half-day cruise or an elaborate multi-day itinerary exploring the Sea of Cortez in sophisticated style. We can also arrange chef services for a perfect yacht outing.

Traveler’s Tips Before Your Departure by Air ALL PERSONS, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Mexico are required to present a valid passport. Also, be sure to check your airline’s carry-on policies ahead of time.

Before Departure by Land or Sea U.S. citizens traveling between the U.S. and Mexico by land or sea are required to present a Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI)-compliant identification document.

©Robert trama

The rules call for U.S. citizens returning to the United States via sea or land ports of entry to have one or more of the following (depending upon individual requirements): a U.S. passport; a U.S. passport card; a trusted traveler card such as FAST, or SENTRI; a valid Merchant Mariner Document (MMD); or a valid U.S. military identification card while on official orders.

Be sure to check the U.S. Customs website at www.cbp.gov for the most current identification requirements. Minors Unaccompanied minors traveling without both parents may require additional documentation in order to travel to Mexico. We recommend that you check with your carrier prior to your trip for current requirements to ensure you have proper documentation. background check Some travelers with criminal records may not be allowed entry into Mexico. It is advisable to check with your local Mexican Embassy before your trip.

Upon Arrival in Mexico En route to Los Cabos, you will receive a Mexico Tourist Card and a Mexico Customs Declaration form to fill out on the plane prior to arrival. Each visitor, including children, must be in possession of a Tourist Card. You will need this card to check in for your return flight, so keep it with your ticket. At the Airport Upon entering Mexico, you’ll be given a baggage declaration form and asked to itemize what you’re bringing into the country. If you’re bringing gifts to friends and relatives in Mexico, be prepared to demonstrate the origin and the value of the gifts. U.S. citizens entering by land can bring in gifts with a value of up to $75 duty-free, excluding alcohol and tobacco. Passengers entering Mexico by air or sea can bring in gifts with a value of up to $300 duty-free. When traveling with medications, bring a copy of your prescription from your doctor. Tourists are permitted to bring in personal effects duty-free. According to Mexico’s customs regulations, in addition to clothing, personal effects may include two photographic cameras or video recorders, a portable computer (laptop), three cell phones or other wireless devices, a CD player, DVD player, portable speakers, 10 DVDs, 30 CDs, 10 packs of cigarettes, 25

mtraveler’s tips cigars, and three liters of alcoholic beverages. Additional items are permitted, but as all regulations are subject to change, check the Mexican customs website at www.sat.gob.mx for the most current information. To avoid duty fees on valuable items upon return, you may find it beneficial to register these with U.S. Customs. DO NOT bring firearms, meat, vegetables, plants, fruit, or flowers into Mexico. As you exit the airport, be cautious about in-airport timeshare sales pitches. If you have reserved transportation, your ride will be awaiting outside the airport exit, where taxis are also available.

Departing Cabo

50

After checking out, make sure you head to the airport on time. Have proper documentation on hand, especially the MEXICO TOURIST CARD you received on the flight to Los Cabos.

U.S. Customs: The U.S. Customs Service currently permits most U.S. citizens returning from international travel to bring back $800 worth of merchandise, including 1 liter of alcohol, duty-free. Additional amounts may be subject to applicable duty fees. Some U.S. border states (most notably, Texas) also have imposed restrictions on liquor, wine and beer imports from Mexico. Inquire about restrictions with the liquor control office of the state through which you will return. It is illegal to bring Cuban goods into the U.S. Do not bring back fruits, vegetables, meat or dairy products. For an up-to-date list of prohibited items, visit the U.S. Customs website (www.cbp.gov) or contact the U.S. Consulate before returning from Mexico.

Currency, Credit & Banking Newer regulations passed by the Mexican government have tightened the use of American cash dollars (USD) while in Mexico. Businesses may only accept a limited amount of USD per transaction, certain businesses may not accept dollars for any purchases, and hotel desks are only allowed to exchange a

m

limited amount per month into Mexican pesos. Some businesses choose to accept American dollars, while many others don’t. Note that when you pay in dollars, you will receive change in pesos. The use of credit cards and traveler’s checks (accepted in limited locations) were not affected by the new regulations. Since ATMs are widely available, it’s wise to bring a small amount of U.S. dollars to exchange (smaller bills are advisable) and then withdraw what you need in pesos with your debit card. Note that most ATMs in Mexico accept only 4-digit PINs. Be sure to advise your bank of your trip before traveling and ask about transaction fees. Once your dollars are exchanged for pesos or you make a withdrawal, there is a fee to change them back, so withdraw only what you need. Exchange rates fluctuate with banks offering the best rates. If you travel out of the tourist areas, it is good to have pesos on hand. Major credit cards are accepted in Los Cabos; Visa and MasterCard are widely accepted. American Express and Discover Card are accepted in a few locations. Due to fraud protection, be sure to notify your credit card company ahead of time about your trip and ask about international fees. In restaurants and shops, ask if they accept credit. Personal U.S. checks are rarely accepted.

Telephones The country code for Mexico is 52. The area code for Los Cabos is 624. Most Internet cafés offer long-distance calling. Check with your cell phone provider before your trip for roaming accessibility and smartphone data charges while abroad. Refer to Useful Phone Numbers (page 53) and Frequently Asked Questions (page 54) for additional information.

Water The water supply for Los Cabos is well water. While many locals drink directly from the tap, multiple factors can lead to contamination. We suggest you drink bottled or purified water and ice.

mtraveler’s tips Weather Just south of the Tropic of Cancer, weather in Los Cabos is temperate and sunny, with little rainfall and an average temperature of 78° F. Sunny winters offer cool nights. Summers are hot and arid. Summer and fall are usually the best for diving, with warm waters and good visibility.

Time Zone Info Los Cabos is located within the Mountain Time Zone (MST), usually 2 hours behind New York and 1 hour ahead of Los Angeles. However, note that in Mexico, Daylight Saving Time is observed from the first Sunday in April through the last Sunday in October.

52

Security & Safety Los Cabos is a very safe destination. Exercise common sense and caution. Don’t leave valuables unattended. When using an ATM, use the same attention you would at home. Absolutely avoid narcotics and firearms. If in trouble, contact the U.S. consulate. Water safety: There are no lifeguards in Los Cabos. Beach resorts use a flag system to indicate water safety: red indicates danger, yellow means caution and green signifies water conditions are safe. Use caution around the surf, especially on the rougher Pacific side, where large waves and undertows are common.

Transportation ESSV can pre-arrange transportation to and from the airport to your villa or resort. We recommend a car rental for your convenience and have partnered with AVIS who can deliver your car to your villa. Private chauffeured transportation is also available by reservation. Taxis are also widely available, but don’t run on meters. Negotiate your fare and be clear about your destination. Additionally, there is also local public bus service. A newer option are the “Ruta del Desierto” buses which run between San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas.
