Manager’s Message

z

Welcome to Southhaven Firstly I would like to welcome all our new residents and families to Southhaven. We look forward to getting to know you. We are in very exciting times at Southhaven. We have just opened our new lower ground area (Blue Gum Wing). The official ribbon cutting was conducted by Kenneth Hayward on August 15. The Blue Gum wing is specifically designed for residents with dementia. It has a wanderingfriendly outdoor area, a 1950s-style kitchen and is small enough to reduce confusion. The link building is very close to completion. Builders inform us that it should be ready for use in late October. I am looking forward to seeing groups of residents and visitors sitting in our café, enjoying a beverage and a snack while taking in the views. The community has experienced a very late flu season this year. Please refrain from visiting if you have flu symptoms. The flu can be lifethreatening to the elderly population. If you must visit, please ask the staff for a face mask to help prevent the spread. Spring is notorious for the dreaded gastro bug, so again I urge you to refrain from visiting if you have symptoms so that we can protect our residents from getting sick. When visiting, please remember to wash your hands with the alcohol gel on entry and when exiting. Prevention is always better than a cure. The NSW food authority conducted the annual inspection of our kitchen in August. I am proud to inform you that we scored an ‘A’ rating. Congratulations to our wonderful kitchen staff for their ongoing dedication and hard work. I am sad to announce that our Care Manager, Veronica John, is leaving us for a promotional opportunity. Please join me in farewelling and congratulating Veronica. We wish her all the very best in her future endeavours. We are currently recruiting for the Care Manager position. If you have any concerns or would just like to chat please feel free to come and see me as my door is always open. Kind Regards, Peter Jessing

Activity Reviews QUEEN’S BIRTHDAY - Tuesday, June 7 The Queen’s birthday is an Australian public holiday. Many Australians have a day off work and it is a great opportunity to do something with family. At Southhaven Nursing Home, we celebrated the Queen’s birthday by inviting her to join us for a nice afternoon tea, where our residents enjoyed chatting to Her Majesty while having their nibbles with a glass of wine! This was followed by lovely music, a sing-along and a quiz. We would like to thank all the staff who helped to make this day a special one for our residents!

FLOWER ARRANGING - Sunday, July 24 “The Amen of nature is always a flower.” - (Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr.) It was very pleasurable to watch our loved ones working together, creating a beautiful floral arrangement that brought happy memories from the past. It gave them the opportunity to choose the flowers and the vase they would enjoy and be comfortable working with. Flower arranging encouraged our residents to socialise with each other and at the same time they can be connected with the beauty of nature. It gave them a great deal of pleasure. Not to forget, after finishing, the smile on their faces while looking around the room at the display of the arrangements that they created and enjoyed their beauty and fragrance. Flowers are a universal instrument that conveys various messages on occasions. It has always been considered a symbol of sharing and positive feeling. Flowers have a positive impact on emotional health which helps relieve stress, illness and depression.

Activity Reviews OLYMPIC CELEBRATIONS - Tuesday, August 9 The Olympic Games‌ what a spectacular event and what a great opportunity to make our facility buzz with excitement!! At Southhaven Nursing Home, our residents were so excited with the decorations - flags, torches, ribbons, Olympic rings and medals! Our residents passed the torch to each other for the opening ceremony, marching while the Olympic Anthem was playing. Staff and residents had lots of fun competing against each other with different games, starting with the bean bag game, basketball, wheelchair race, quoits, darts, air hockey and our special quiz for the Olympics! After finishing our fun games, we cut the Olympic cake that was especially made for the event by our amazing kitchen staff. The most important thing is that everyone had fun and everyone was a winner for participating and making the day memorable.

Resident Story - Elmar Liepins Elmar was born in March, 1924 in Latvia (a small country in Northern Europe). In 1940, Latvia was forcibly occupied by the Soviet Union. The following year, German forces attacked the Soviet Union and occupied Latvia. Elmar was conscripted into the army and faced the reality of war. Elmar met and married Karmene at Hersbruck refugee camp in Germany. In 1949, they migrated to Australia as displaced persons and were placed on compulsory two year employment contracts. Elmar worked as a professional engineer at the Electricity Commission of NSW. Elmar purchased land in Yagoona and erected a garage, where they lived while building their house. Later, they built a weekender on the Central Coast and eventually a larger split level home. Each winter, they went skiing, reminding them of Europe. After retirement, Elmar volunteered for Radio 2EA presenting the Latvian Radio program. Elmar and his wife travelled both locally and overseas. Elmar’s life changed when Karmene developed serious health problems for many years. In 2009, Karmene passed away quietly, with Elmar by her side. Elmar has been living at home, with increased support from his two children. However, his home has 21 internal steps and after a series of falls, he recently moved to Southhaven.

Volunteer Corner Volunteer News Our 48 Volunteers and four Community Visitors have been busy during the winter months, despite a few absences due to cold and flu. In June, we farewelled our beloved David who, we’ve heard, is settling in well to his new home and enjoying the fancy coffee on offer at Courtlands Village in North Parramatta.
As a farewell gift, we presented David with a clock for his new unit to help him arrive on time for his many new social commitments. Riverside Art in June was all about cats, as requested by our residents. Volunteers Stephen, Loueze and Helen, and visiting family members, were all involved in encouraging the creation of masterpieces.
