I

f you’ve talked to me in the last week or two, chances are I have told you about the book I’m reading: “Just My Type” by Simon Garfield.

It is a book about typefaces, or fonts.

It is a great read. I learn something new every time I pick it up.

It is pertinent to my interests and my job.

Plus, the spine is cool and there is a Periodic Table of Typefaces.

Fonts may not be something you notice much, but as someone who designs newspaper pages, I pay special attention. But

my job isn’t the only reason I am excited about this book. I have had an interest in fonts and letters for as long as I can remember.

In high school, I had a notebook dedicated to my font designs. The names of family, friends and places I longed to be were written page after page in different styles. I designed fonts for every month of the year. I still have that notebook; I pulled it out the other day to have a look.

Inside the notebook, I found a progress report from a math class that is covered with letters, print and cursive, and another sheet of paper that has all 26 letters drawn in a block, bubbly, sans serif kind of type.

Type is everywhere. “Just My Type”

addresses how it can change how we perceive a message. Garfield talks about the history of fonts and the minds behind them. There is a real art to designing letters, and that is something this book reaffirms.

“The design of type is an alarmingly vibrant art form,” Garfield writes.

I guess my point in writing this is to say there is an element of art in everything — the words we read, how we cook a meal, sign our names, how we dress for the day.

The museum is in the midst of completing a digitization project supported by the Utah Division of Arts & Museums. The project will provide a public access portal to the museum’s collections, including photos of items in

the collections as well as the ability to rate, tag and comment on the collection. The portal should be online before the end of October. Interested parties are encouraged to check www.brighamcitymuseum.org for updates.

USU Symphony Orchestra performs tonight The Utah State University Symphony Orchestra presents “Chamber Orchestra Delights” at the USU Performance Hall tonight at 7:30.

“The audience will be able to enjoy the rich orchestral colors played in the intimacy of our wonderful performance hall,” said Sergio Bernal, director of the USU Symphony Orchestra.

The concert will feature Elgar’s

“Chanson de Nuit and Chanson de Matin,” Bach’s “Brandenburg Concerto No. 4 and Schubert’s “Symphony No. 5.”

“Elgar’s music is always very noble and nostalgic,” said Bernal. “His songs are two miniatures originally written for violin and piano but later transcribed for chamber orchestra.

“Bach’s ‘Brandenburg Concerto’ is among the all-time favorite works of the

Baroque era and Schubert’s ‘Fifth Symphony’ is a charming piece with beautiful melodies and spontaneous gestures.”

Observe ‘Day of the Dead’ at Museum of Anthropology In what has become an annual event, USU’s Museum of Anthropology hosts “Dia de los Muertos: Celebrating Our Ancestors” on Saturday, Oct. 29, at the museum. Joining the museum for the day’s activities are members of USU’s Latino Student Union. Activities are free and open to everyone.

“Dia de los Muertos” or “Day of the Dead” is widely observed in Mexico and focuses on gatherings where family and friends pray for and remember friends and family members who have died.

For the USU observance, members of the Latino Student Union will share cultural presentations at the museum at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. The presentations give personal and cultural insight into celebrating the Day of the Dead.

Throughout the day there will be a variety of activities that people of all ages can engage in, event planners said. Activities include a food station, where visitors will get a glimpse of what foods are traditionally served during Day of the Dead. Visitors can also create paper skeletons, papel

picado (decorative paper cutouts) and make their own candles.

An authentic altarpiece will be created, and museum visitors are invited to leave an offering (photo, a note, candy, etc.) in memory of a loved one they have lost.

“This is a great cultural event that I wouldn’t miss,” said Emily Largo, a senior at USU majoring in nutritional science. “This is the one of the many Saturdays that I have been looking forward to, and I’m excited to participate in the celebration of our ancestors.”

Community members, as well as Utah State students, can visit the museum during its operating hours, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The USU Museum of Anthropology is on the USU campus in the south turret of the historic Old Main building, Room 252. Admission is free.

Tracy says the event features a huge outdoor Tesla coil – a high frequency electrical transformer – and a chilling bed of nails demonstration.

“Our thrills and frights are based on scientific principles but they’re anything but boring,” he says.

“This year, student chemists from USU’s chapter of the American Chemical Society will also be helping us out with experiments of terror.”

The annual event funds yearround science outreach activities conducted by the USU SPS chapter for K-12 students throughout Cache Valley.

Outreach is a key chapter requirement for membership in the national society, he says. USU’s chapter has been named an “Outstanding Chapter” by the SPS national office for several years in

a row.

“Students in physics and other science classes spend a lot of time learning from textbooks and that’s important,” Tracy says. “But books are no substitute for hands-on activities and the creativity and problem-solving skills that are built from trying experiments on your own. That’s the kind of experiences we’re trying to give kids in our community with our outreach programs.”

Parking for Haunted Labs is available in surface lots near the Performance Hall at 1090 E. 675 North on the USU campus. The SER building is southwest of the Performance Hall. John Reischman, Jaybirds hit the stage

The Bridger Folk Music Society presents John Reischman and the Jaybirds in concert at 7:30 p.m. today at the Eccles Conference Center Auditorium on the USU Campus. The Jaybirds are a superb West Coast ensemble led by renowned mandolin master and composer John Reischman of Vancouver, British Columbia. They deliver a truly fresh blend of original and traditional songs and instrumentals that draw from old-time heritage with a bluegrass twist. The result is a rich and timeless acoustical landscape.

John Reischman is recognized by his peers as one of the best mandolinists performing today, and his tasteful artistry defines the heart and soul of the Jaybirds band. Reischman seamlessly integrates their music by drawing on the incredible talents of band members: Jim Nunally on guitar, Greg Spatz on fiddle, Nick Hornbuckle on

banjo and Trisha Gagnon on bass.

USU’s chapter of the Society of Physics Students presents “Haunted Labs: The Sequel” from 7 p.m. to midnight in the Science Engineering Research “SER” Building.

The public is invited. Admission is $7 per person or $20 per family.

USU students pay $5 with a USU ID. “This is probably the biggest haunted house in Cache Valley — or at least the biggest haunted laboratory,” says Brian Tracy, president of USU’s SPS chapter. “We’ve turned our labs and classrooms into a daunting maze of fear and we have some ‘ginormous’ physics toys to share.”

all the time in the world.

After learning what he learns from the mysterious stranger he travels to the rich part of town seeking vengeance. It’s all pretty silly because Will never goes through any kind of change.

He’s suddenly an action hero hell-bent on changing the broken system of time hording that the rich people have constructed.

He meets a young rich girl named Sylvia Weis (Amanda Seyfried) who is tired of the controlling hand of her wealthy father. She wants to rebel too, and undergoes a similar nonsensical change in order to keep the plot

rolling forward. Will magically becomes an action hero overnight.

He’s deadly with a gun and handily beats up any of the cops who get in his way.

“In Time” raises a lot of pertinent issues, but fails to capitalize on them through storytelling. Instead the movie is bogged down with Timberlake’s acting and a script that calls for the repeating of key phrases later on in the movie in order to give them emphasis (“Is it stealing if it’s already stolen?”).

It’s a shame that this movie turned out so hammed up because it had a ton of potential.

In the end its potential is squandered. Weighty subjects replaced by terrible acting and bad jokes (I know a good idea, let’s play strip poker while the cops are chasing us down. That makes a lot of sense right?). Is it too early to already be thinking of a remake?

“In Time” is a great idea in theory. It’s the future, and everyone on earth has been genetically engineered to stop aging at their 25th birthday. After that, they have exactly one year left to live which is counted down by a glowing neon forearm clock. In their world time is the new currency. Four minutes for a cup of coffee, a couple hours for a bus ride.

They have jobs where they can earn more time. In the ghettos people live day by day, watching their clocks run down to nearly zero, hoping to just scrape by another day.

It really is a fascinating storyline. One which draws many parallels to the socioeconomic world we find ourselves in today. The rich get richer, right? If there are people struggling to make it through another day, literally, then there are also people that have figured out a way to essentially live forever. Like the fat cats of Wall Street, these men and women have amassed endless amounts of time. Their arm clocks boast centuries of time. As long as they don’t do anything dangerous – where they could end up dying – they could essentially live for as long as they have time.

The trouble with “In Time” is its corny execution. There is a great sci-fi movie buried deep inside, but it’s almost impossible to extract without completely remaking the movie.

eed a crazy wig?

A fake nose? Want realistic-looking facial hair or to convince people that you’re 50 years older than you really are? No problem. At least not for Molly Hill Pack, a senior in the theater program at Utah State, who specializes in hair and makeup for theatrical productions.

Pack started her career at USU as a visual arts major.

“I’ve always just loved art, and everything to do with art,” she said. A fan of the “Lord of the Rings” and especially the special effect makeup used in the films, Pack’s interests evolved to hair and makeup design, and she switched to a theater major with an emphasis in costume design. “It was a way for me to be working with other people and still be working with my hands artistically,” she said.

“And I just fell in love with it once I started doing it.”

Although there is one theatrical hair and makeup class taught at USU, Pack said she learned most of what she

knows through workshops outside of school. For her hair and makeup design in USU’s productions of “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” and “Seussical the Musical,” Pack won a trip to Washington, D.C., two years in a row to compete on the national level with the American College Theater Festival. There she attended a week’s worth of workshops, learning new techniques from professionals in the field. At the conference, she presented her work with the USU theater department, competing against other talented artists across the country. For her work with “Seussical the Musical,” Pack was a national runner-up and won her own professional makeup kit to take home.

Now that she’s graduating in May, Pack is mentoring other students in the theater department interested in learning the craft. She taught a workshop earlier this month on styling hair and wigs for productions, and she designed and styled the wigs for USU’s encore

production of “Little Shop of Horrors,” which runs through today and tomorrow. For her next show, Pack will mentor another student in designing the hair and makeup for an upcoming production of “Twentieth Century.”

“I love all of the other artists, costume designers, set designers, all of those other amazing, talented artists that I get to work with and get inspiration from. It’s an amazing, collaborative art,” Pack said.

“A show doesn’t happen without everybody collaborating together.”

Pack said although her dream has been to work in Hollywood, she would be just as happy working as a hair technician and makeup designer for a professional, nationally recognized theater company such as the Utah Shakspearean Festival, or the Tuachan Theater in St. George.

“Going to a show and having all the audience members just love everything, and have such a good experience, is such a rewarding thing,” Pack said.

Wigs: If a wig is made out of real human hair, Pack said it can be styled just like someone’s real head of hair. “You can spray it, wash, it, style it, curl it, you can do just about anything that you want that you do with real hair — you just have to be more gentle,” she said. For synthetic wigs, which are made out of plastic, Pack said it will melt if you try to curl it, so you have to get creative by dampening the wig and setting it with curls overnight, or using steam to mold it. For the crazy, sculptured hair-dos in “Seussical the Musical,” Pack used glue to hold the hair in place, especially where the characters were dancing around and singing.

To wear a wig, such as the 60s-style wigs Pack designed for the Du-wop girls in “Little Shop of Horrors,” the actress first wraps all of her hair tightly into pin curls placed all over her head and laying as flat as possible against her scalp.

Then comes the wig cap, a nylon cap that covers the top of the head, and then the wig itself, held in place by pins anchored to the pin curls. If an actor or an actress has short hair, Pack said the wig can sometimes be anchored into place using

tiny little ponytails all over the head, or little spring-like hair pins that clamp down tightly on short hair. If the actor or actress is completely bald, the wig can be attached with toupee tape, or a skin-safe adhesive called spirit gum.

Along the edge of the wig, where the wig meets the forehead, Pack uses a technique called ventilating, where she threads individual hairs of the wig, two or three at a time, through the tiny holes of the netting lining the wig, tying knots to secure them in place. She said the technique, which is hard to learn and do well and is highly sought after, makes it look like the hair is actually growing out of the skin. For film, the ventilated netting is often glued to the forehead with spirit gum to hold it in place. Fake mustaches or beards can be made in the same way: individual hairs are threaded though the tiny holes in a piece of nylon netting and attached to the upper lip, chin, jawline or eyebrows.

To create a fake chin for the beggar woman in “Sweeney Todd,” Pack took a plaster mold of a face, put clay on the chin area, and sculpted the clay to the shape she wanted. She put Vaseline on the clay, and then painted layer after layer of liquid latex onto the clay. Once the latex was completely dry, she peeled off the latex and attached it to the actress’s chin using spirit gum and makeup to blend it to her face.

Young people generally have smoother skin than their elderly counterparts, so Pack dabs on foundation with a stipple sponge to give the skin the appearance of texture (using dark brown or black, Pack can create the appearance of stubble or 5-o’clock shadow in the same way). She uses a toothbrush to brush white paint into the hair, and to create wrinkles, Pack uses a flat paintbrush to paint highlights and low-lights on the face in the places where wrinkles would naturally occur.

Stokes Nature Center’s upcoming annual auction and dinner will celebrate the theme “Design With Nature.” This year SNC invites the community to contribute to the event through original works of nature-inspired art that will be featured as centerpieces for the festivities. Artists are invited to submit a 2-foot by 2-foot centerpiece or a birdhouse, following the theme.

A secret judge will select the top three entries, which will then be live auctioned to help support SNC’s nonprofit mission to provide environmental education programming. Artwork will be made available for purchase during the event, with remaining entries returned to the entrants.

Margetts has served as one of the organists for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir since 1984. “I will address organ literature and organ registration in this workshop,” said Margetts.

“We will talk about the different stops or sets of pipes on the organ and how to combine them in musical ways. I will do this in a practical way by presenting my repertoire and explaining the steps to come up with a good registration or sound for each piece.”

The workshop is presented from 3 to 5 p.m., followed by Margetts’ recital at 7 p.m. in the St. John’s Episcopal Church chapel located

at 85 E. 100 North, Logan.

“This workshop offers information about appropriate prelude and postlude literature, useful registration ideas and elementary keyboard skills aimed at enhancing your experience and enjoyment of organ playing,” said Thomas.

This is one of the worst times of year. We are stuck adrift between the memory of summer vacation and promise of substantial holiday festivities. Of course Christmas spending opportunities are already at full throttle everywhere barely paying heed to the semi sacred Halloween barrier. And Halloween isn’t scary any more once you’ve seen a couple Republican candidates’ debates, throw in the end of daylight savings time and we really are headed towards the heart of darkness that is the fleeting-fall-nearwinter around here.

I find that going out of one’s mind is a good escape, but there is always the risk that you

won’t be able to come back. Likewise employers and loved ones tend not to recognize “mental health days” no matter how much yelling, screaming and monitor throwing you use to convince them otherwise.

Maybe it is more the word vacation than the vacation itself that is so alluring. To that end, here are some out-of-the box alternatives you might consider.

Baycation: San Francisco is one of my favorite bay places to go. It is possibly the only place in the northern hemisphere that is colder in the summer than it is in the winter. If you can’t afford that, shoot for Willard Bay and a bowl of Ricea-roni.

Daycation: Maybe you just need a day away from the struggles of self-control to refresh your psyche. Do everything that is bad for you for just one day. Anything more than that has already been done by that “Super Size Me” movie guy. Just take one day to skip flossing, procrastinate, eat too much, drink too much, surf all the bad stuff on the Web, take the elevator in twostory buildings, circle the parking lot for an hour until you get that front row spot, use the handicapped auto-door opening thing everywhere you go and listen to AM radio station news talk shows as many hours as possible. Do enough physical and emotional damage to

yourself that you will be glad to get back to your previous tedious daily banality.

Wheycation: Give up dairy products. Those milk mustache advertisements are stupid anyway.

Go hug a Holstein and drink some soy milk.

Sleighcation: Plan a

sleigh ride over the river and through the woods even if you no longer have a grandmother’s house to go to.

Laycation: Stay horizontal as much as possible for a day. Wait, that’s what those idiot “plankers” were doing. If you haven’t heard of it, look it up on YouTube; their parents must be so proud.

Gaycation: If you are gay run away from it, if you aren’t gay run toward it. Meet in the middle and recognize the uniqueness of every human being and our ability to hate each other for so many things other than sexual orientation.

Married people and business partners already know this.

Staycation: Just like

your dog. “Sit, stay, what a good boy, here’s a liver biscuit.” All those buy local, eat local, slow foodie types need to include vacation local as part of their rant. Inertia is the mother of all small carbon footprints. Do nothing, go nowhere is the zen of low impact.

Even people who have never heard of Nile Rodgers have probably heard his music.

The chunka-chunka, funk guitar style he made popular with his band, Chic, was one of the trademarks of the disco era. And while Rodgers may not be a household name, songs he wrote with partner and bass player Bernard Edwards, including Sister Sledge’s “We Are Family” and Diana Ross’ “I’m Coming Out,” certainly are.

What “Le Freak” — also the name of one of Chic’s biggest songs — makes abundantly

clear is that even without the impressive stream of hits, Rodgers’ life story would still make for a wild, weird and wonderful read.

Rodgers grew up in New York’s Greenwich Village with his hipster mother and her Jewish junky husband, Bobby, “whose natural sense of cool gave him a leg up on everybody else,” at least until he quit his clothing store job to devote himself more fully to heroin.

Rodgers’ mother eventually succumbed to addiction and as the situation at home deteriorated, he bounced around the city and then the country, flung off on relatives and whoever else might have him, getting a crash

course in the countercultural currents stirring 1960s America along the way.

At an early age, he talks his biological father off the upperstory ledge of a Greenwich Village flophouse, learns to play guitar, trips with Timothy Leary, jams with Jimi Hendrix and bonds with a young Michael Jackson over Freak Brothers comics, just to name a few adventures.

Rodgers eventually meets Edwards and the two form the nucleus of Chic, which brings them international success if not necessarily rock star recognition — something that irks him throughout the book.

It’s surprising to learn how taken aback Rodgers is by the backlash against disco, but he makes a good point about how white rock artists not only

enjoy more artistic freedom but also greater financial success.

So just as the embers of the disco inferno begin to die down in the 1980s, Rodgers becomes

the go-to guy for white musicians looking for a “blacker,” more danceable sound, producing hit records for David Bowie, Duran Duran and a host of others.

His biggest coup came when he produced Madonna’s second album, “Like a Virgin,” and the book offers a thrilling glimpse of the young superstar on the verge of mega-success.

Rodgers’ writing — like some of his songs — can rely a little too heavily on cliches and border on corny, but he’s also capable of dashing off some real gems, like when he nails the junk scene in his boyhood living room as “a twisted beatnik version of Ingmar Bergman’s chess game with death: adults of every hue in suspended animation, waiting to move to the next square.”

‘Damned’ is an endearing tale

“Damned” is gross, sick, nasty, silly, all the things you want from the merry madman of American letters, Chuck Palahniuk.

How can you not be instantly transfixed by an opening like this?: “Are you there, Satan?

It’s me, Madison. I’m just now arrived here, in Hell, but it’s not my fault except for maybe dying from an overdose of marijuana.”

And so begins the kind of goofy, but hypnotically endearing tale of a 13-year-old girl who, completely lost in life, finally starts to discover herself in Palahniuk’s demented version of the afterlife.

In Chuck’s hell, demons from various cultures and religions over the millennia prey on the damned for meals and sport.

The landscape is dominated

by The Great Ocean of Wasted Sperm, The Great Plains of Broken Glass, The Swamp of Partial Abortions and a menagerie of vomit-inducing locales.

Our heroine doesn’t let her new situation get her down, though. With unusual pluck she assembles a group of outcast friends — billed as a kind of underworld “Breakfast Club” — and confronts her new environs head on.

To give away more would be to rob the story of its magic. As always, Palahniuk’s writing is peppered with laugh-out-loud details and strange twists on familiar themes. The author of “Fight Club” and “Choke” had been on something of a stylistic voyage with his last two books, the challenging “Pygmy” and the vaudevillian “Tell-All,” hemming himself in with language and rules and stunts.

With “Damned,” Palahniuk opens the fire hose to full bore again, stripping away the veneer on American society and showing us the yucky parts we don’t want to see.

Do not look away.
