Introduction In the present century, high-rise buildings are built more compared to smaller ones. The main reason for this is continually increasing population and land price. With this advancement, there also comes some negative elements associated with it. The greatest risk of this modernization is fire disaster. According to statistics, the number of fires in high-rise buildings is increasing every year. If we look down to history, we have numerous examples of fire taking place in high-rises and skyscrapers. NFPA(National Fire Protection Association, USA) holds Fire Investigations database which records two of the deadliest fires that took place in high-rise buildings: 1. A fire took place in World Trade Centre or the twin towers in September 2001 that cause the death of 2,666. 2. Another deadly fire took place in Brazil at an office building in February 1974 that cause the death of 179 civilians. http://www.cadoutsourcing.net/cad-outsourcing-services/contact.html
Introduction Reasons of fire in high-rise building High-risers have complicated structures and functions. They have multiple combustibles like wallpaper and curtains. Thus, it catches fire quickly as there are multiple staircases, shafts, and air passages. As the vertical height is more, it becomes too difficult to evacuate. Fire extinguishing from outside becomes a concern here, as it is difficult to put out the fire in such building having a height in hundreds of meters. Other reasons include natural calamities like earthquakes, forest fires, etc. Human carelessness is also a reason for ignition of the fire.

Introduction What is a Fire-Fighting System? In order to prevent fire in multi-storeyed buildings, there comes a rescue system known as the firefighting system. A fire-fighting system is basically a system that prevents the fire from spreading around. It is vital to have a pre-fire plan for such buildings that cover the entire building occupancy such as floor, elevations, staircases, and pipes. Most of the buildings these days consists of Fire-Fighting Systems such as fire-extinguishers, water sprinklers, fire-hydrant systems the nature of which depends on the size and type of the building.

Introduction Understanding fire-fighting system A firefighting system consists of three parts: • Fire-Storage Tanks: A fire storage tank consists of a large amount of water in a tank that is stored underground or top of the building. These tanks remain filled all the time and it does not have any outlet other than the water pumping system. They are very much different than the domestic water storage tanks in terms of design and maintenance. • Fire Pumping System: A Fire Pumping System is situated very close to storage tanks in the pump room. These pumps are pressure controlled. So, when a fire extinguisher opens a hydrant the pressure level automatically drops to switch on the fire pump and water comes out of the system. These pumps are turned off manually to ensure the system works in case of malfunction. • The Distribution System: It consists of steel pipes welded together at the joints. They are of two types: one is the wet system in which the pipes contain water as a hydrant the other is the dry system in which the pipes contain air as a hydrant. Some of the buildings consist of a manual system that operates on a fire engine to pump water into the system. http://www.cadoutsourcing.net/cad-outsourcing-services/contact.html
Introduction Design of fire-fighting system As a fire-fighting system plays a vital role in reducing the risks caused by fire, it becomes important to have a properly designed fire-fighting system. Technically, designers use firefighting layout drawing, fire sprinkler CAD drawings, fire fighting system CAD drawings, fire protection drawings, and fire coordination shop drawing to provide a well-built fire extinguishing system. • Fire Fighting Layout Drawing: A firefighting layout drawing consists of a layout of the fire extinguishing system including all the elements of the system. • Fire Sprinkler CAD Drawings: Fire sprinkler CAD drawings and firefighting system CAD drawings are to be designed while keeping the layout of the building in mind. Thus, they are generally designed by sprinkler contractor using technology such as CAD(computer-aided design).
